NZ elections, electorates A-Z

I'm currently ...

  • standardising wikilinks [electorate name (New Zealand electorate)] instead of (NZ electorate)
  • election dates with [comma year] and other nonsuch while I'm ...
  • reshuffling the party/candidate order from alphabetical to #votes gained (candidate, then party, then alphabetical - where two parties gain same #votes).
  • Also checking math on some pages - electionresults.govt.nz gives total votes cast, inc. informals - some pages didn't separate informals from total valid votes so to clarify matter ...
  • I've included extra line of Informal votes

I notice you've included a template 2008 result, as on Mt. Albert page. Was considering adding column of ±% swing & think we should discuss soon as it'll be hard yards once template starts filling up with results.

Abolished/renamed electorates need standardising, or perhaps some included into current electorate where broadly the same entity (Mt. Albert/Owairaka/Mt. Albert). Fanx (talk) 09:06, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since NZ does census every damn 5 years 60% of elections are with changed boundaries. I think swing should just be on seats that keep same name & disregard catchment changes. If swing varies from, or runs counter to national trend on account of changes it can be covered in history of seat (i.e in 2014 seat gained leftleaning suburb 'A' from neighbour electorate 'B' and lost part of conservative suburb 'C' to neighbour 'D' making seat more marginal according to 2011 results).

Regarding wikilinks vs. redirects ... yea, I'm a bit anal about that, so I'll just make changes when I come across them while doing other stuff. Damned if I know why they were changed (from NZ) anyways, in UK they are just that (see Vauxhall (UK Parliament constituency)).

edit: I do know why they were changed - it was an American edit-hog that did it to suit his own/his nation's inability to comprehend the meaning of 'NZ'. ... and here was me thinking it must have been some consensus. On that count, I'll stop 'fixing' these links.

Electorate names that are not suburb, town, region or city names don't have (New Zealand electorate) in their title.

Take your point on renamed electorates - leave as is then. ... and with you on the mācron thing.

Would appreciate your comments on version of electoral results template in my Sandbox. It's based on UK Parliament constituency templates and has scripts to include Green tickY & Red XN winners & Losers, Elected member & List Member background colours, etc. Fanx (talk) 14:49, 16 September 2008 (UTC) Thanks for the feedback. I felt changes were needed as some party colours (ACT, Green, National et al) had changed and that made the modified text labels difficult to read - separating the colour from the label seemed like a good fix. Since I'd noticed some party colours had changed I checked them all against any media I could find, mostly party logos or their current website colours. Some colours have been tweaked and I'm sure some more (as you suggest) could also be tweaked although I'm currently up to 43 different colours (some older ones not yet on meta/color page) and it's getting harder to put much variance between close colours without obscuring the party identity.[reply]

Since I was re-ordering tables by #votes, I was doing substantial editing anyway & was up to New Plymouth. I don't propose to rush though those I've already done, but those that still need doing can use the new template. As you've seen I also changed the colour of the winning MP to a pale green/blue (#CCFFFF) as I found the beige (#FFEECC) and pink (#FFE8E8) too difficult to differentiate.

Regarding NZ place names .... d'ya mean towns & suburbs? .... with random styles & such? A bit of a nightmare, maybe need to decide on one standard and .... leave until after election. Fanx (talk) 02:03, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
