Cheers and jeers go here -->

I enter this as a Wikipedia novice, so forgive please my errors of form (I see no provision here to send this via a more private method). I am a native of Natchez, Mississippi. I am a retired academic. In 1999, I put aside my studies in Classical Greek and Early Modern ("Renaissance") continental and English Literature (studied at Millsaps College, Univ. of Virginia, UC Berkeley, and Oxford University) to pursue interests in incidents from my region's history, as part of my studies at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. My initial project, one that was to dominate my research, reading, and investigation for the next 20 years, was to investigate the murder of the neighbor of my grandparents, who lived on a farm 12 miles from Natchez, Ben Chester White. Eventually, ABC News magazine 20/20, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's office (Brad Pigott), and other journalists and officials became involved. My research continued to include every important book written about the region known as the "Old Southwest", the era of Judge Lynch, the history of racial violence, the WKKKK (White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan), and other ancillary topics. I've written a 600-page book on this topic that covers the history of violence from the conflicts between the Natchez Indians and the French in the early 18c, forward to Mr. White's murder in 1966. Helpful in this pursuit is my own ancestry: settlers who came here in 1808 to the rural areas, along with other forbears who grew up as part of the uptown, "high tone" life of Natchez proper. In addition to my reading in secondary literature, I interviewed over 100 people and spent many hours travelling the region. I unearthed evidence in this and other cases that had been either hidden or ignored since the murders, evidence useful to the prosecution of both Ernest Avants and James Ford Seale in the new millenium, with justice finally served, however belatedly. I've become perhaps among the more knowledgeable students of the history of this region, of these murders, and of local life, city and country. I offer what I know in the service of reliable, accurate information about these related topics. My personal and professional history prove my integrity of purpose. I will respond with a private email address, should whomever sees this at Wikipedia seek further communication.

The Original Barnstar
I noticed your series of outstanding edits to Bruinsburg, Mississippi, a place I'd never heard of and am now deeply interested in. Then, on your home page, I found the list of articles you started about U.S. slave traders. Thanks for making these crucial additions to a Wikipedia topic field (U.S. history) that is still too dominated by 19th- and early 20th-century history sources in which slavery is erased or sentimentalized. Cheers from Alabama. ― ob C. alias ALAROB 17:38, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Undefined sfnp reference in Earl E. Kynette

Hi, in this edit to Earl E. Kynette you introduced {{sfnp|Stevens|2009|page=232}}, butthere is no source defined for it to call. This means that nobody can look the reference up, and places the article into Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. If you could supply the missing source it would be appreciated. Thank you, DuncanHill (talk) 20:25, 22 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ITN archives

Hi. I hope you are doing well. I am glad to tell you that Wikipedia:In the news/Posted/Archives are now fully available, with all the vandalism/disruptive edits removed. A tag has been placed on Category:Taxa named by Frederick Smith indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to complementary and alternative medicine, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Peter Bryan Bruin, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Coles Creek.

Speedy deletion nomination of Scotch settlement (Mississippi)

Hello Jengod,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Scotch settlement (Mississippi) for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

I'm concerned that your edits to John Hutchings (slave trader) leaned towards WP:SYNTH. Wording like "may have" and "was most likely"...is unencyclopedic and speculative. How far from Ellis Cliffs did he actually live? A mile? Ten miles? Magnolia677 (talk) 11:33, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Green's October 2024 edit-a-thon

Hello Jengod:

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2024!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2024, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

We hope to see you there!

Someone recently added an Andrew Jackson series template to the Andrew Jackson article. I find it crowds the images, which was a concern of one of the FA reviewers when we had to rework the article, but I'm not going to worry about it, it points readers toward further reading on Jackson.

I just wanted to let you know that I added an additional link to the series template in the Early Life section: Slave trading. It'll be interesting to see what impact it will have on the article, which is full of a lot of information that should get people thinking. Will it get more views or generate more editor activity on a topic that is an important part of Jackson's legacy? Wtfiv (talk) 16:50, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Right on. I added the series box to the slave trade article, at the expense of one of my beloved images of text LOL (amply covered elsewhere in that too-long article but I'm working on it!). Thanks much. Cheers, jengod (talk) 16:58, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Historyguy1138 You can't add draft articles to categories on the main site, but to streamline things when Drafts go to Mainspace we have the handy draft categories template. When the article is moved, the categories will automatically be applied. Put categories at the very end of the page, code-wise. The code looks like this:
:{{draft categories| :[[Category:April 1854 events]] :[[Category:Battles of the Taiping Rebellion]] :}} :
I don't think you can link drafts to the Chinese-language version but I'll put a note about what the Wikidata item is and hopefully the Articles for Creation reviewer can set it up. jengod (talk) 04:59, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for all your help. Probably a stupid question, but do you by any chance what I should do about my sandbox? I used it to make a draft and now it looks like this:
" This page is a redirect. The following categories are used to track and monitor this redirect:
From a page move: This is a redirect from a page that has been moved (renamed). This page was kept as a redirect to avoid breaking links, both internal and external, that may have been made to the old page name." Historyguy1138 (talk) 06:21, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Historyguy1138 You can just replace that text with anything else you want if it's in your userspace. I just did it for you but any page you create at User:Username/Anysubtitle is yours to manage as you see fit. That said it's all semi-public so don't break any major rules (unhinged political or religious rants, personal attacks on living people) in there. Have fun. Best, jengod (talk) 14:53, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thanks Jengod you rock. I super appreciate the help. This is my first article ever. Not to discredit the other fine Wikipedians on here, but I worked very hard on it and tried to be as scholarly as possible.
Thanks. Yes I think everyone in general should strive to be as logical and scholarly as possible.
How do I follow you to see your future work and stay in touch with you? What are your interests/ specialties? I see that one of them is Civil War History. Wow a man of my own heart. What articles have you made? What other topics do you enjoy outside the Civil War?
Also I noticed that you made a draft talk page for my article. Thanks so much. How do I do that for future reference? Historyguy1138 (talk) 15:23, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also I realize I have to wait about 2 months for my article to get published. But in your professional opinion, all things being equal, do you think it will get published?
Also how does that work? Who reviews the articles? Are they looking for structure and sources or content too?
Silly question I won't potentially get someone who is more math oriented reviewing a history article for its historical content will I? LOL. Historyguy1138 (talk) 15:28, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"People pardoned by..." subcategories

FWIW, they probably need at least three entries to survive deletion. IDK where you're at at cat populating, but if you're done, I'm considering nominating the categories with 1 or 2 entries for deletion. pbp 19:49, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Purplebackpack89 Reasonable! I'm about 2/3 done. Benjamin Harrison better get his butt in gear. ;) jengod (talk) 19:50, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Purplebackpack89 @BusterD whatever folks decide, categorizing was a fun tour through U.S. history featuring everything from the Sedition Act to organized crime to Mormon polygamy! jengod (talk) 00:42, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, Benjamin Harrison pardoned 613 people at one time, INCLUDING but not limited to the notable linked. BusterD (talk) 00:47, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Andrew Jackson

I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate how your explorations and excavations in the subarticles on Andrew Jackson. They provide clues and sources that expand and qualify the consensus narrative of Andrew Jackson. I particularly find the investigation into how the Natchez trace/Mississippi river connection played out in his role as slave trader and entrepreneur, as well as his relationship with Rachel, thought provoking.

It looks like its become more timely too. I'm sure you know, interest has been increasing on the Andrew Jackson and the slave trade in the United States Since December 1, 2024 it is averaging over 150 views/day, whereas it was at about 40 before then. Wtfiv (talk) 08:27, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wtfiv The fact that you took the time to leave this message means the world. Just on a personal level I get irritated by little bits of the story that don't seem to match or that conflict in different accounts. Creating lists or stubs helps me organize the information, and then sometimes the situation snowballs! If it helps or interests others on the encyclopedia, I'm delighted that my obsessiveness was beneficial in some way. Thanks for the info about page views. I know how to look that up but don't usually track it. Appreciate the supportive and I hope you have a *wonderful* week. jengod (talk) 12:04, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
