Morbid jealousy thanks

Thank you for restoring Morbid jealousy back to its proper name today. This article, once called Delusional jealousy, was renamed Morbid jealousy by semi-consensus (two editors) in April 2010 for the same reason you gave in your edit summary. I agree with you that the number can be 1200 or 1,200. The reason I reverted it to 1200 (no comma) is that 1200 (no comma) is how it appeared when that fact was first added on 23 November 2009 and it was still that way on 16 August 2011. Cima della Bondasca

Hi Ericoides. I'm glad you're ok with my changes (I think I will also have to check the coordinates now). Actually the situation is quite complicated since there are several unnamed summits on the Swiss map (can't find the Italian maps), but a Google Books search tends to confirm that Cima della Bondasca and Pizzo del Ferro centrale are the same summit and I think it makes sense to indicate the altitude of the highest point rather than a lower summit (it was Pizzo occidentale in this case). Bentley Beetham

I notice you’ve already had a discussion with Parsecboy about this, but as it was me that brought it up I feel somewhat responsible.
I was just working through Jonas/Spellmaster75's back catalogue, and was considering whether revert this edit, for the reasons Parsec gave, but it occurs to me that as the main contributor to this article the preference on spelling is really up to you.
On the subject of the spelling, there’s a long/interminable discussion on the matter at Talk:Spitsbergen, which led to an explanatory paragraph in the article, agreed by everyone concerned (except Jonas): In a nutshell "Spitzbergen" was the standard spelling in English throughout the 19th century, and (in Britain at least) well into the 20th, though in America it changed earlier. It still crops up, particularly in sources for naval history of the Second World War, for example (which is one of my interests) and in edits by Brits of a certain age, which is why it’s a legitimate alternative spelling. And the point of WP:ENGVAR is to stop us squabbling over different spellings, by requiring we leave things as they were written.
Jonas wasn’t banned just for this BTW (though it’s a symptom of the larger issues) and it isn’t acceptable that people thumb their nose to the community and get away with it, hence my response to him.

I see the above.

I don't supppose you have any theatrical antecedents, Ericoides? I have been writing an article on the silent film star Daisy Burrell, born in 1893. I think I may be the first to attempt it, apart from 'Who Was Who in the Theatre, which is more or less self-written, like Who's Who. Daisy seems to disappear into thin air about 1924, reappears briefly after 1945 and disappears again about 1947. I can trace no date of death for her. There were women of that name who got married in the 1920s, both at home and in the US, but none of them seems to fit. 'Burrell' sounds to me too plain to be a stage name, but 'Daisy' may be. South Col

Hi there - referring back to a 2009 edit of yours at South Col. Under "Traversed by" you put that the 1952 Swiss expedition "did not traverse the Col" - I'm a little confused by this. First, that it's a contradiction, and second...didn't they traverse it on their way up? They went to the Western Cwm, and on to the South Col, and from there up to 8595m. I get where you're coming from so I toned it down a bit, though seeing as he's almost a national hero in Germany as far as writers go I think the way I rephrased it shouldn't be too controversial. Also, I feel like that short explanation of who he was is in order since I don't think everyone will know.

With a height of x

Ok, sure! I wasn't aware of that (it's not a translation from German actually, just my bad English). I generally prefer to avoid parentheses in articles hence the "with" phrase for peaks that are particularly high. Now I think I'll use something like "culminating at an altitude of" or "reaching a height of" instead (seem to be ok according to Google books). Does it sound better to you? DYK "nompage" parameter

Hi, just a note for future reference. The "nompage" parameter of {{DYK nompage links}} is used to specify the location of the nomination page, and it is not necessarily the same as the name of the article. When you changed this parameter, it made the nomination page unusable. 2m > 4m

Hello,

The boundaries on Template:Wikipedias follow a 1-2-5-10-20-50 etc pattern. I think it would be silly to make the highest bracket deviate from this pattern just because the only language currently in that bracket happens to have over 4m articles. One day, other languages will have 2m+ articles and move up to this bracket. That's why I want to keep to boundaries as they are.

When English reaches 5m, a new bracket for 5m+ can be created.

  • I'm British (but also rather old fashioned) but prefer to see the full stop. Deep down, however, I'm not concerned either way and don't propose to get into a dispute about this (especially as I am about to go away for an extended holiday). One thing I would ask, however, is that for the Southampton churches you alter the template ({{Buildings in Southampton}}) so it points to the new article titles. Mountaineering in Europe

The Category:Mountaineering in Europe has the advantage of grouping together articles re the Alps which overlap various countries (as national boundaries tend to run along the highest part of mountain ranges!). The Everest category covers the mountaineering articles for the mountain regardless of country too. I have been adding “by continent” categories to various types of sport to include regional events in each sport eg the various sports at the Asian Games. Lauterbrunnen Wall

Thanks for your message. I visited Switzerland as a tourist and took some photographs, including some around Lauterbrunnen. When I saw the picture given here (at the top), on the Lauterbrunnen page with the caption that it was part of the Lauterbrunnen Wall, I guessed that the picture I had posted (File:Lauterbrunnen Wall.JPG) was that of Lauterbrunnen Wall. Now, you say that it is not. I am sure it is picture of the same rock face. You can even see the waterfall at the extreme left end of my picture. Here is another picture of the place I had taken (bottom picture). The earlier picture was a longer view showing the entire wall and the lower picture here is a closer view showing only a part of the wall. If you still think that this is not Lauterbrunnen Wall then the one at the top is wrongly captioned and it should be corrected.   • I now see why you thought it was the Wall. I've amended the wrongly captioned pic on the Lauterbrunnen page to include the phrase "the Lauterbrunnen Wall in cloud (background)". The Wall isn't the bit of rock on the right. It's a big bit of rock, but compared with the north face of the Jungfrau opposite it, for instance, it's tiny! I take your point, it's a question of what his profession was at the time, if, indeed, he had one, which it seems he didn't. I suspect some of the earlier alpinists would have had little time for the idea that everyone needs a profession. Indeed, one or two old men I knew used to put "gentleman" in the space in their passports for occupation, when there was one. Award for Tenzing Norgay

This was a minor challenge. Trying every version of his names I could think of, I didn't find anything at all in the London Gazette. Perhaps it wasn't used because he wasn't a British subject? I eventually tracked down an announcement from 10, Downing Street, which was reported in The Times on 2 July 1953, confirming that he got the George Medal for the Everest expedition. Thomas Woodbine Hinchliff

Hey, there, Ericoides, good to hear from you. At first sight that looks like a discrepancy, but it isn't a cast iron one. The ODNB (which is notoriously slipshod, of course) says "He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1849 and was called to the bar in 1852, but did not practise". That may not be entirely correct, and we can rarely be certain of a negative, but the fact that Hinchliff still had chambers in 1857 doesn't mean he was getting any work as a barrister, or even looking for any. Think of Uncle Tom in Rumpole. If you ask me to guess what happened, he hadn't got stuck into the law by the time his father died in 1856, and after that he had enough of a private income to get on with doing what he felt like. In the mid 19th century very few people admired men who worked when they didn't need to. However, I don't have a source for such guesswork, and I'm comfortable with the page as it is. Just in case you stopped checking the Science ref desk, here is my reply there. No need for an answer, and wishing you good luck in your search.

The most official thing I can find is [1], the British gov’s product specification for Stilton. Unfortunately, it simply refers to penicillium roqueforti without specifying how this mould is grown (as I understand it, the worries are if the mould is grown on bread, some wheat could be transferred to the cheese). However, it also contains contact info for the official makers’ organization, if you wanted to follow up.

Yes, I know a good one: the official Austrian topo map (the website is terrible and you may need to reload the page, when it works enter "Ankogel" on the left, click the go button then double click on Ankogel in the menu below), which gives 3,252 m. 3,246 m probably comes from older books or maps, so I'd replace it, especially when both List of highest mountains of Austria and List of mountains of the Alps above 3000 m (which is mainly the work of Afasmit) use 3,252 m. mountains / mountains of the alps

I have been tagging for the under-tagged Mountains project (about 50 percent or more categories with mountains in the title never tagged to be related to the project) and have found more blank categories than I have for most projects for the mountains of the alps - and about to correct all my mistakes there - is there any reason why the project seems to have no one interested in tagging, or just accident ?

(I posted this response on my talk page which you might not see, so posting here. I've not used the messaging or talk feature before). Mark Cavendish is Manx as he was born in the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom, therefore, it isn't appropriate to have the United Kingdom in the 'Country' field. What you were insisting on was incorrect. It really is that simple. To achieve a healthy middle ground, I have changed the 'Country' field to 'Country Represented (Not necessarily country of birth or nationality)', which I think is a good compromise as nothing is being misrepresented now. I don't think we should have this information in the article as of yet. For once, a twitter account (especially one by one of the belligerents) is not a reliable source. Secondly, the current link does not even state that the ship in question is the "Orsk", but according to Google Translate simply says "Berdyansk !!! The occupiers are burning well!" And finally, there are conflicting reports about the identity of the destroyed- it is not yet clear whether it was the "Orsk", the "Saratov" or both (see for example https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1506922587112284163). What are you thinking about intregrating the photo of the Article 'Punta Maria Cristina' in the article 'Dent d'Herens' too? The photo shows the east-ridge very clear, with annotations. Thank you for your addition to the JS article - it is an excellent account of horrific events. The recent discussions around 'oh, but aren't these just allegations?' has been making me rather angry. It's disappointing that some people will accept the verdict of a jury of random strangers as proof of guilt, but seem reluctant to accept the scrutinised testimony of a great many victims as proof of Smyth's guilt.
