Thank you for assessing. I have edited several footnotes in 772d Expeditionary Airlift Squadron. I agree with your comment (which was deleted along with the assessment from the request page before I saw it). Hope the change is what you wanted.

Using American English

I tagged the 4th Louisiana Infantry Battalion talk page for using American English. I believe any article on an American military unit should use American English. That being said (and having nothing to do with the assessment of the article) I believe the form "promoted Major" to be British, while "promoted to Major" to be American usage. But maybe, that's just me. Nice article, by the way. Lineagegeek (talk) 23:52, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Promoted to major" does sound better to my American ear. Djmaschek (talk) 00:04, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

4th Louisiana Infantry Battalion

The assessment on this article was made very late on August 31 on UTC. If you wish to do so, you can add it to the contest entries for August. I have been closing the contest month a day or two after the end of the month to be sure there are no late entries that qualify for that month. It seems to me that it would also qualify as a September entry instead because of the late notice of the assessment. We have had one or two borderline situations that were carried over to the next month this year. I asked Hawkeye7 about this some months ago. As I understood his explanation, the bottom line is that we do not want to deprive an editor of a contest entry because of a very late assessment on the last day of the month that cannot reasonably be expected to be seen before the end of the month or one that carries over to the next month when the request for assessment was made early enough to be addressed in a month but was not done until after the end of that month. (Hope that makes sense.) Donner60 (talk) 01:33, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I will enter it in the August contest. It won't affect the 1st and 2nd place entries since they are far ahead of me in points. One reason that I'd like to get the credit now is that, if I wait, I might forget to add it to my next month's entries. Djmaschek (talk) 02:42, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Flanders sources

Hi, hope you're well. I'm looking to beef up the Flanders narrative for Henry de Hinuber, but my library is sadly lacking. Do you have access to modern sources for the campaign, or have any to recommend? Thanks, Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:30, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: That article looks rather impressive already. The only applicable sources that I own are Steve Brown's book and an abbreviated version of John Fortescue's work. I see that they are already cited. I have Ramsay Weston Phipps' 5 volumes of The Armies of the French Revolution, but I doubt if Hinuber gets a mention in there since it is mainly about French generals. George Nafziger may have some relevant orders of battle but finding them online can be tricky because the URL seems to change often. Djmaschek (talk) 20:01, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Going to have to bite the bullet and purchase Ball's Neither Up Nor Down, Thomas's No Want of Courage, and Demet's We are Accustomed to Do Our Duty. I'm sure there's a book somewhere that mentions his service in the campaign; if only I could remember which one! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 20:10, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: Brown, page 336 gives this brief data. Heinrich von Hinuber: Captain, 14th Light Infantry Regiment (Hanover in 1793-5), Brigade comdr. 1813-14, Division comdr. 1815, Lt. general 1819, died 1833. Djmaschek (talk) 21:49, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, have got that bit from Brown. My goal now is tracing the 14th's service through Flanders, as right now all I can say is that they were present at Tourcoing. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 21:51, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: At Tourcoing, the 14th Light served with Clerfayt's column. (Brown, pp. 309-310) In August 1794, one battalion of the 14th was captured at Sluis. (Brown, p. 320; Smith, p. 89) One battalion was garrisoning Sas-van-Gent (?) and Hulst. (Brown, p. 320) On 11 December 1794, elements of the 14th were employed in a counterattack at Gent. In the same skirmish, General Von dem Bussche was killed. (Brown, p. 236) Two battalions of the 14th were part of the garrison under Hammerstein that escaped from Menin on 29 April 1794. (Brown, p. 153) Djmaschek (talk) 22:25, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I might have confused the Sluis element. My understanding from Brown was that they were guarding POWs at Sluis rather than being POWs? I missed the Gent and Hammerstein mentions in Brown, thanks, I'll add those! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 22:28, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: See Smith, p. 76 for the Siege of Menin on 27-30 April 1794. Djmaschek (talk) 23:32, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What's the Smith work? I would have to figure out which battalion Hinuber was serving with, which I am imagine would be more difficult! Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 23:35, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pickersgill-Cunliffe: See Smith, Digby (1998). The Napoleonic Wars Data Book. London: Greenhill. ISBN 1-85367-276-9. Djmaschek (talk) 00:20, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, about time I got my own copy. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 19:00, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
