WWII memorial inscription in Latvia

I'd appreciate your assistance (again :-) in understanding a particular phrase on a memorial monument, this one in the Bikernieki Forest near Riga. The text (in Russian as well as Latvian), in provisional translation to English, reads: "In the Bikernieki Forest, from 1941 to 1944, the German Fascist occupiers cruelly murdered 46,500 [peaceful?] civilians" (the words after the figure being the focus of my query):

  • ...46500 MIERĪGU IEDZĪVOTĀJU

    • "mierīgie iedzīvotāji" is a phrase in Latvian which distinguishes general citizens from militaries. Thus the phrase will mean "46 500 civilians". But I've got suspicion that here is meant not simply civilians but "peaceful civilians" (because there is used ending "mierīgu" instead of the usual "mierīgo"), stressing that they were peaceful in their habits. A bit exagerated but in a way - justified. In Russian the ending of the word can't be flexed in those two forms - thus in Russian this sentence can be understood both ways. Let's write in English: "...cruelly murdered 46 500 peaceful civilians" and nobody will say that it is incorrect. --Daarznieks 15:19, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So you've assessed the Russian in the bargain! -- where I come from, we call this "value added" translating and esteem it greatly among our colleagues :-)
In cases of a dual-language original, I consider the local language to be primary. Having no provenance other than this photograph dated 1997, I would suspect that the monument dates from the Soviet period, which would explain the inclusion of Russian, and possibly also the lack of text in a Jewish language (such as Yiddish or Hebrew.
I greatly appreciate your careful explanation of the above, with its regard for the wider historical context. It's my belief that rather than remaining mute in the terrible aftermath of warfare, we had best use what tools we have to teach about it responsibly, if that's the least — and unfortunately, sometimes the most — we can do. Labyrinths

Hi Daarznieks! great work on creating the Stone labyrinths of Bolshoi Zayatsky Island page, but I notice that the wording is very similar to the Wondermondo page on the same subject. That page is ⓒ 2009 Gatis Pāvils. To be included in Wikipedia the wording should be changed so that it summarises that page without quoting it word-for-word. Latvian help needed

Daarznieks, I understand about time constraints. Any help, even small, is appreciated. We're doing pretty well on the interface translation for Latvian, which is great. Here's some links to the important Help pages, simply click "translate this page" at the top of each and select "Latvian" to get started:
  1. the User Guide, Latvian 70% complete.
  2. Portal/Description page, Latvian 0% complete (this one is important because the translation can become the main VE page on lv.wiki, which doesn't have a VE general description page yet).

Colonia del Sacramento

I just reviewed the article Colonia del Sacramento and made a few edits to improve sentence structure and clarity, but I came across the following sentence in the section "Urban fabric" which I do not understand. I discovered that you wrote the sentence, so I'm asking you.

""The Portuguese Old City - 16 ha large Barrio Histórico - was enclosed by a fortification wall across the peninsula in the site of present day Calle Ituzaingó."

What is "16 ha large Barrio Histórico"? I know what "Barrio Histórico" is. What is "16 ha large"?CorinneSD (talk) 16:50, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
