Burning Man Film.

The film "Thursday" was sanctioned by Burning Man and I did screenings in San Fransisco that were attended by Larry and Marion.

The film has been screened all over America and several over countries as well.

Can we please include it on the Wikipedia page, especially as there is no BM this year.

I attended BM for 18 years and am giving this film out as a gift.

Hi PayniePaynie, many thanks asking about my revert of your change to the Burning Man article where you added a link to a YouTube video. The reason that I did the revert is because I found the video to be non-notable. At the time, there were something like 120 views on YouTube, just now there were 193 views. I did a Google search for "Thursday Burning Man Payne" and found a FaceBook page mentioning the video and the YouTube video itself. So, it would seem that the video is not notable. BTW - as a gently reminder, if you worked on that video, you may have a conflict of interest and you should follow the Wikipedia COI rules. If you are involved with the video, you should probably avoid adding links to the video in Wikipedia articles. If you are involved in the video, you may want to promote it in the regular Burning Man channels, such as via their online community. Thanks for the update, I'd still be resistant to having a link to the video because of the lack of coverage. There is a lot of media about Burning Man and the Black Rock Desert, but not all of it has links from Wikipedia. For example Peter Goin has at least two books about the area, yet the Black Rock Desert article links to neither. I'm in a video from Burning Man 2008 that has 83,833 views, which is not linked to from the Burning Man article and I really feel is not notable. Cxbrx (talk) 23:00, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

California place stubs

Well, it doesn't seem like there will be any help from the creator of those stubs, but it doesn't seem like he has any real intentions of contesting any PRODs/AFDs. So I guess the best course of action will just be to chip away slowly. I don't like wikidrama, so the slow chipping away is probably the best way to handle it without making a fuss, IMO. I'm getting the impression that PROD is more efficient for the obvious GEOLAND and GNG failures. If there's too many AFDs open at one time, editors just can't get to them all, and I've been seeing a lot of cases where admins are relisting AFDs with no comments or where there's only one comment, and soft deletion would probably be applicable. Personally, I'm also trying to apply caution as I go through these: I'd rather see a non-notable article kept than a notable one deleted. I'm personally on the fence on the question about if a post office lets something pass GEOLAND, so I'm just automatically avoiding the ones that claim post offices, with a few exceptions like Bradtmoore, where there's proof that there's something funky going on.

When I started out on these GNIS error stubs, I was working in Missouri and wound up having a fairly low AFD hit rate. I then gave up on MO, and have been working on CA, KY, and a little WV. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it, as my KY noms have been pretty consistently accurate, and Bradtmoore is I believe the first CA one of mine that's not trending to outright deletion. I think you are doing a great job with the AfDs, your proposal to take a bit of a break seems reasonable to me. I'll do what I can to get through the CA AfDs. I don't have much input on other states such as Kentucky, I'm primarily focused on the west. Personally, I slightly prefer merges or redirects over deletions because it helps prevent the article from being recreated and it makes it easier to review the history. Part of the reason that Bradtmoore is going towards merge is perhaps because you correctly stated that it is not a totally cut and dried deletion. We had a similar situation with somewhere else in California where a redirect to the nearby location seemed better than a delete. This is just my $0.02...
About post offices, it seems like my opinion is in the minority and I almost see it as a small inside joke to start each of my replies with a statement as to whether there was or was no post office. For places that had a post office and have only trivial coverage, I've recently been going with a weak keep and also try to state that my weak keep should not prevent a delete or merge. I certainly don't take it personally when places with post offices are nominated for deletion and understand why people would disagree with my view point. Thanks for considering the post office issue though. A larger issue is that there are no clear guidelines about what a "Populated, legally recognized place" is in #1 of WP:GEOLAND.
To me, a bigger, more interesting issue about notability concerns the fact that some places might be notable because there is nothing else nearby. I brought this up about Stovepipe Wells. Partly, I'm thinking about places in Nevada that might not be notable if they were in more populated areas. I don't have a concrete proposal or anything. I've outlined a few questionable Nevada locations on my talk page, feel free to take a shot at them sometime after we get through the current batch of AfDs. I don't suggest starting with Clark County, though - it has a lot of potential AfDs.

Yeah, I'm on the fence between merge and outright keep on Stovepipe Wells, although I think the content ought to stay around in at least some form. I've looked at some of the NV ones you tagged for notability, and I'm not quite sure what to do with those. The coverage is trivial, but some of them did report populations in the WPA guides, so if it were reporting populations, it must have been of some significance. I think the fact that a GEOLAND failure does not necessarily mean a GNG failure is why it is important to conduct a regular WP:BEFORE in most cases. I know of a few editors who mostly check topos, but I got newspapers.com through the WP:LIBRARY, and that has been a huge help on many of these. The topos don't tell the whole story (and can show stuff that isn't really there: I recently ran into one that showed a lot of buildings at the site; it turned out to be a single pig farm and the buildings were almost all pig shelters). What I'm considering doing is running through and trying to cull out as many of the hopeless ones as possible. Then, when the pile is much less than 3000, it'll be easier to look at the remaining ones one-by-one. I appreciate your thoroughness in looking at AFDs, you often seem to take your BEFORES a step further than even I do, as you sometimes turn up sources I missed. It's also good to have someone who is willing to stand up when they think an article needs kept. Otherwise, it might be too easy to just get frustrated and try to delete everything, which clearly isn't good for the encyclopedia. Hog Farm Bacon 05:40, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You sent a message to me today about COI. I have very little experience editing Wikipedia articles, so I apologize for the problems I may have caused.

Yes, I am co-editor-in-chief of Educational Studies in Mathematics. I think my changes were non-controversial - updating the editor info, the impact factor, and the description of the scope of the journal (which quotes the journal website). All these things can be verified easily on the journal website.

And I thought I'd start an article on myself, which I see now to be a no-no. And this makes sense. I don't know how to delete the page. I've contacted my university's communication office to see if they want to set up an article on me. I had put minimal information on the page yesterday, with the intention of substantiating it later -- so this also would have tripped the lack of prominence alert!

Hi, thanks for pointing out some copyvios on Thacker Pass Lithium Mine. What a mess the history of this article is but I've decided not to apply revdel. Two reasons:

  1. Wikipedia:Revision deletion#Large-scale use although the edits are all fairly recent, the sheer number and number of revisions by other editors make revdel impractical. I'd have to hide too many significant revisions by others - this is because revdel isn't about only removing the edits where offending material is added but 'all the edits until that material is removed (so when you tag an article it is necessary to identify the revision when the material is removed as well as the revision when it was added).
  2. A lot of the material used is out of copyright so there is no copyvio. That's not to say that it's ok to quote so much material rather than it being written in the editors own works, it isn't, but it's a not a copyvio. I can see a couple of sources quoted Michno and Tanner & Tanner that are copyvios but as they were attributed it's a push to say they are blatent copyvios as required by Wikipedia:Revision deletion#Criteria for redaction.

Therefore I think it's sufficient to leave things as removal of the content from the current version suffices. Please carry on looking for copyvios and labelling them as such - it's never wasted effort even if here here is no revdel. Nthep (talk) 18:40, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nthep, thanks for taking a look. I'm fine paraphrasing the quoted text. I worked in academia for many years and have a fairly strict rule of avoiding quoting copyrighted text unless the work is a critique of the copyrighted text. I find that many people misunderstand fair use. So, I view almost any use of copyrighted text on Wikipedia as a copyright violation. I agree that these uses were not blatant and am happy that the text was used with attribution. I wanted to be sure that I was following the proper protocol. You modified the newspapers.com url leaving this edit summary (Use newspapers.com url that does not require a wikipedia library account. Link to clipped article instead of image of the page.) I don't know how to use newspapers.com without being logged in through the Wikipedia website. I don't have a paid account to Newspapers.com (and as a volunteer here I'd rather not purchase one.) How do I make a link to a clipped article instead of the actual web page (which I think you mean by "image of the page" while not logged in thru WP? Hi @Netherzone:! You are right in that my edit summary is slightly confusing. I'll work on better wording. The short answer is that (hopefully) you can create an account on newspapers.com that will allow you to clip an article.
The longer answer is that when you go to WP:LIBRARY, then log in, then go to the newspapers.com site, then find an article, there should be a "Clip" link at the upper right. If you click on that, a window titled "Register with Newspapers.com™ to create a clipping" will appear and the choices are
"Register with email",
"Continue with Ancestry",:
"Continue with Facebook".
I believe that if you select "Register with email", you should be able to register and create an account on newspapers.com and save clippings. After you have a newspapers.com account, you would click on the link at the bottom "Already have a Newspapers.com™ account? Sign In".
However, I am not sure about whether it is now possible to create an email account with newspapers.com as I had an email account with newspapers.com via Wikipedia before the new proxy system came out so it might not be possible to create an account on newspapers.com
If you have problems, try clearing your cookies associated with oclc.org or try a different browser. Also, see Wikipedia_talk:Newspapers.com#issue_converting_clipping_to_citation, T332685 and T322916.
I find newspapers.com to be very useful and would like the references for it to work for non-logged in users and for users who do not meet the WP:LIBRARY requirements.
One issue is that the URLs for the clipped articles need to be edited by hand. "www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org" should be replaced with "www.newspapers.com". For example:

becomes

Newspapers.com

Thank you for the tip on changing the url. I have subsequently clipped several more articles, changed the url, and they are working just fine. There doesn't seem to be a limit on the "share" option either. Let's hope this workaround continues to work. I also include as much information in the citation as possible from the newspaper, sometimes including a direct quote if I think it is necessary. Thanks again. @Isaidnoway: Cool! Thanks for letting me know. I updated my notes at User:Cxbrx#Newspapers.com_links. It turns out that User:Citation_bot will fix up links that start with https://www-newspapers-com.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/article just fine. However articles that go to the image of the entire page will still not be useful to non-logged in users and users who don't meet the WP:LIBRARY requirements.
