I did not "insert information" I restored information that was on the page Japan for a long time before it was unilaterally removed by user "Nichijyou123" on 31 August 2020. "National Foundation Day (legendary) February 11, 660 BC", because this is Officially Recognized by the Government of Japan. Common English words

Hi! Sorry to contact you on your talk page, but since the edit was made so recently I figured it would be better to ask you than simply removing the questionable wording. Do you have a source for this edit (or this one)? Because the article to which the edit was made says that the sword was found in the serpent's body after it was killed. Hi Hijiri88. I read that in an article a while ago, but maybe it is incorrect. Another explanation: "After slaying Yamato no Orochi, the god Susano-o found this sword in one of the eight tails of the gigantic serpent." it can be changed to that. Higher-quality image uploads

I noticed on a couple of images you uploaded to Commons (one of them being commons:File:Taketori Monogatari 2.jpg) that you uploaded versions that you called "bigger and bit sharper", when in reality they were just poor upscales of the existing image. Lots of external websites seem to scrape original book scans from Commons and upscale them (which is what I think happened in this case), so please be careful in the future not to upload upscales: the way I check is by scaling the original small image to the size of the new one, and judging that way. — Goszei (talk) 23:11, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Artanisen: If you want an image to display larger than the file dimensions, you can have the software do the upscaling (see WP:PICSIZE). @Artanisen: True, but an upscale from an original scan is not a "higher-quality" version.
If you were to rescan the book that the original scanner did, then overwrite, that would be excellent (and fine under Commons policy). If you were able to find a higher-quality scan online of the exact same page, that would also be a great overwrite.
However, the image that you uploaded in the case I linked was done artificially (i.e. by an computer algorithm, which perform interpolation; see Image scaling) -- you can tell because of the upscaling artifacts. @Artanisen: I agree with you completely, and hope we can find better scans of every single piece of artwork. The vast majority of your uploads to Commons are great and big increases in quality, but I just ask you to be more careful at making sure you are overwriting with a version with higher quality (aka, a different scan), instead of upscales or other interpolations from a low-quality scan (which introduces blur artifacts). — Goszei (talk) 09:01, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Artanisen, please stop changing the Kant image everywhere you can find it. Your preferred version is looking in a different direction and has a lot of black space around his face. In many cases, that means it looks bad on a page.

At a thumbnail size, the quality is completely fine. The way the portrait is painted is not necessarily the way that it looks best on a page, which often has Kant looking to our left. Please use the talk pages of individual articles reach consensus when your preferred version is challenged. You are not doing readers a favor by globally replacing the image chosen by page editors with something different.

At thumbnail size, the colors of the version you prefer are incorrect compared to the original. He also looks in the wrong direction. People will click on the thumbnail as well which is very low quality compared to This version . You're not being constructive by restoring a low quality image that is a bad crop of the original painting. I checked this version . The original image was uploaded by Ben-nb~commonswiki in 2006. It was enlarged by the user Amano1 in April 2014. Amano1 cropped a part of the original image and changed the colors. But it's not about the painting! Not at all. It's about what representation of Kant looks best as featured on any given article.
If the painter has an article (or deserves to have one created), by all means go to town with all the details you've got on the original "correct" color pallet and so forth. Otherwise fidelity to original painting is not a relevant factor.

The original Immanuel Kant portrait doesn't have a yellow glow and tint as this version . Upon closer inspection we can see the user CarlFromVienna replaced the original image with a different version in 2008. The original image was uploaded in 2006 by Ben-nb~commonswiki. Then in 2014 Amano1 enlarged the small image (from 294 × 371 to 964 × 1,388 pixels) and changed the colors and cropped a part. To put in simple terms; this version is a badly edited, oversized and low quality version. It doesn't properly represent Immanuel Kant. It suits the Category:Images of low quality. P.S. You're doing it backwards. You need to be adding it to the article first, then adding the category. It's not helpful to add categories that don't make any sense to the reader. Without a single mention in the article body, the category is going to make zero sense to your average reader. Stop doing that immediately.
And even the above is the bare minimum to even entertain whether it meets WP:DEFINING. You've seemingly made a few questionable applications of the Native American category, but the one I was referring to was for Code Name S.T.E.A.M. The game has been out almost a decade, and to my knowledge, I don't believe a character being Native American has been mentioned ever, at any point. That's not exactly a great argument in favor of this being a DEFINING aspect of the game.

Many of the articles do mention that the character is Indigenous or (part) Native American. It takes a lot of time to add information and references to the articles. You need to give people time to build up the categories. Your tone is demotivating. Native American categories

Hello Artanisen,

I realize you're adding this category in good faith... and I'm also not necessarily the best messenger here because I personally think a ton of the fictional media categorization categories shouldn't even exist at all... but I think you should be a little stricter in which articles get this category. Per WP:CATDEFINING, categories should be "defining" features, as in things that would definitely come up in a description of the topic and have clear inclusion criteria.

  • Characters who are merely "coded" as a ethnicity/nationality only rarely qualify (e.g. the Suikoden III example with the Karaya Tribe). This includes most fictional settings with characters who are clearly inspired by a real-world group. The exceptions are when there's truly a massive pile of sources saying it's relevant, or for films with real-world actors (and even this is shaky IMO).
  • For stuff like the Street Fighter and Killer Instinct: In general, games with ensemble casts aren't categorized by every single member of the ensemble. Per above, it really does need to be defining. If there's a spinoff article/redirect on T. Hawk or Lily or the like, then fine, but it shouldn't apply to the game as a whole.

Okay, back? Did you read it? Please affirm you did. If some aspect is a defining element of the topic, it should already be in the article. And ideally as a major part. So to flip things around, I think categorizing the Turok series with this category is fine: Turok is right in the title and a major part of the game. But other games you've added come down to "Native Americans exist" and that's not defining. It might be defining in the cases where a spin-off article on that character exists, and you might get away with categorizing some redirects a la T. Hawk, but it's not defining to any specific Street Fighter game (or other fighting game series that merely has one character of ethnicity XYZ).
As far as "very few games with Native American characters", that's true, but that doesn't mean we loosen our standards. Take Category:Films about Native Americans for example: it should include stuff like Smoke Signals (film), not every single Western that has an American Indian appear in one scene. Sure, let's look at a couple of articles. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. = an important character called Tiger Lily, she's described as Native American. Fatal Fury: First Contact (and Real Bout Fatal Fury 2: The Newcomers) = Rick Strowd (Native American). Kasumi Ninja = the character Pakawa (Native American). Killer Instinct (1994) has Thunder (Hinnamatoom). Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light = Totec, an ancient Mayan warrior (important character). Metal Gear Solid = the antagonist Vulcan Raven (Native Alaskan American and Inuit). Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain = Code talker (Diné (Navajo) descent). Mortal Kombat 3, 11, Armageddon, Deception = Nightwolf is a Native American shaman. Nightwolf has his own article, so the games could be removed from the category, but it is useful to quickly see a list of the games. Power Stone (video game) = Galuda is a Native American inspired character. The game has a fictional setting though, but Galuda could qualify. Red Dead Revolver = Red Harlow (half Native American). Red Dead Redemption = Nastas (Native American supporting character), Enepay (Native American minor character). Red Dead Redemption 2 = Charles Smith (half Native American), Rains Fall, Eagle Flies, Paytah (Wapiti Indian). Shadow Hearts: From the New World = Shania is described as Native American. SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash, Street Fighter 6, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Street Fighter IV = T. Hawk (native American). Let's forget all of the specific details and just talk about films instead. Do you think a film with one minor character who is Native American should be in Category:Films about Native Americans? Let's say they have like 5 lines and 3 minutes worth of screentime. If yes, then you basically disagree with CATDEFINING. (Of which you have company, unfortunately, I'll admit that there's a small group of editors who does love to stick every tiny reference into a category, but they're doing so in defiance of the guideline.) If no, then read my point above more closely. There have been 120+ playable characters in Street Fighter games. A few Native American characters is the equivalent of a small role in a film, and thus you shouldn't categorize the entire work by that one small role. And more generally, if you did, then we'd have overcategorization, where categories would be a mess of 100+ random small things hiding the 5 relevant categories. To try to put a more positive and less hostile spin on things, if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage here, note that we have an article Native Americans in film. I could absolutely see an article like Native Americans in video games that discussed stuff like Assassin's Creed III and other major depictions of indigenous Americans. You'd probably want to hit up some book / academic sources on the topic, and it'd have to be a referenced article, not just a list of characters. When translating from a foreign-language Wikipedia article, this is supplied at a minimum in an edit summary on the page where you add translated content, identifying it as a translation and linking it to the source page. Sample wording for this is given here. If you forgot, or were not aware of this requirement, attribution must be given retroactively, for example:

NOTE: Content in the edit of 01:25, January 25, 2023 was translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.

Retroactive attribution may be added using a dummy edit; see Repairing insufficient attribution. It is good practice, especially if translation is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{translated page}} template on the talk page of the destination article. If you have added translated content previously which was not attributed at the time it was added, you must add attribution retrospectively, even if it was a long time ago. There is only one German wiki page and it has the exact same name. The page also links to the German version.
