I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy for the following reason: it implies a corporate affiliation with Arsenal F.C.. Hi, I'm new to wikipedia as you know so still in the learning process. I hope this is in the correct place to reply and answers your query. To keep it simple "arsenal" is a word in the dictionary that has at least four seperate meanings. My username does not mention Arsenal F.C. the legal copyrighted name of the club. If my edits were not related to the club then I doubt it would be a problem. When entering "arsenal" into wikipedia's search enginge it does not directly take you to Arsenal F.C. as there is a difference. To clear up a little doubt I could uncapitalize the "A" of my username. As long as you make it clear that you're not affiliated with the club, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to continue contributing from this username – you could put a note on your user page to that effect if you wanted. Arsenal squad list

I discussed my proposed changes on the talk page; aside from a couple worries from one editor which I addressed, there was no opposition and thus I changed the article. The changes I made resulted from a long discussion we had probably before you started contributing, so I will sum it up for you. Basically, I feel the only responsible way to list the squad is to use the first-team squad list that is explicitly stated on Arsenal's website. The other editors, for some reasons I've never wrapped my head around, instead chose to make their own list (which I strongly feel is original research) based on which players have recently been named to the team for a competitive match. Also, I am not removing any information, I simply shifted the reserve team players to their own reserve squad list. This actually makes the information MORE useful, as it provides a clear distinction between first-team and reserve players. Eightball (talk) 05:10, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have read the discussion and I somewhat agree with you, however removal of players with actual first team experience such as Fran Merida is wrong. Deletion of Szczesny, Frimpong and Emmanuel-Thomas in my opinion would be exceptable. If we used Arsenal's website as our only source then we should just provide a link and not bother. We all use our discretion as the season moves forward and do so because as a rule of thumb, Arsenal update only at the start of each season. Most other team's wiki page are done this way and not in the structure you are proposing. As an example, using your method last season Kieran Gibbs would not be considered as a first team member until this season when Arsenal actually added him. Jack Wilshere is a first team member. Kieran Gibbs is a first team member. They have been since last season. Fran Merida is NOT a first team member. He is a reserve team player that has, on occasion, played for the first team because of Wenger's policy of playing young players in the League Cup. To include reserve players on the current squad list alongside first-team players, when we can very easily split up the two lists, is incredibly misleading. You are wrong, Jack Wilshere was given the number 19 (Gilberto's) at the start of season and added to the first team (correct). However Gibbs had the number 40 (the number itself somewhat indicates he was not considered a first teamer) and was not added to Arsenal's first team until April (I was checking at the time). Only Blackburn Rovers' wiki page is done the way you are suggesting, the other 19 prem teams are done mine (the traditional way, that seems to irritate you). It seems you simply don't understand what changes I am making. This isn't about having two separate tables, it's about clearly stating which players are on Arsenal's first-team squad. As editors we cannot simply make up standards that determine whether or not players are a member of Arsenal's squad. That's completely ridiculous and maybe something you aren't familiar with, being new here and all. You appear to be arguing with yourself, as nothing you've said has any bearing whatsoever on the changes I've implemented. Here, I'll spell it out for you: This is Manchester City's squad list, directly from their official website. This is the Man City squad list on Wikipedia. Notice how they are the same? Why don't we just provide a link to the official site and be done with it? We use our discretion as moderators to improve even on their work, not copy. Like I said before Gibbs was not added to Arsenal's first team (on arsenal.com) until April time, so by your standard we would have had to wait. I suggest listing only players who have played competitive football for Arsenal, that is why it is called a squad list. You are changing the title to first team, as a tool for your argument. I would say in reality you are either in the first squad or the youth squad and the reserve squad (for short periods of time) is a combination of the two (not the concern, but this is how it appears to take place at Arsenal). I do understand your Man City argument, though this is a result of them not promoting the amount of youth players Arsenal do (I would be shocked if any of their youths players get games this season with the demands of the new owners, which then reflects upon their first team squad list). Please leave it the way it was and in future discuss the possibility of changes with administrators. Which you have done before and got nowhere. I may be new however it did not stop you from copy and pasting the reserve squad for which I have committed a high proportion of the work (along with the youth page). I joined recently to help improve an already excellent page and not just edit for no reason. I tried to help with the removal of Szczesny, Frimpong and Emmanuel-Thomas, you should see that as a compromise. I'am going to undo one last time and return it to it's original format. If the administrators agree with you by all mean change it. Make sure they read all discussion between us and the other moderators you have challenged in the past. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and edit summary

Hi there, further to your update of JET's stats, please note that when updating a players appearances in their infobox, it is not only the figures that need changing. The "club-update" also needs to be updated every time too. This is done simply by replacing the date and time that is by it with 5 x tildes (five of these: ~ ) which then updates the date. This way other users then know when the infobox was updated. I have noticed that you often edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s). Hi, I know you are the senior editor here but how you are handling yourself is very immature. You are correct that I had a contradictory edit relating to Daniel Boateng. The reason for this is because I read that he had intended to represent Ghana and has since changed his mind. He was born in England and has not represented Ghana at any age group as of now, I will let you read this then you will need to correct it. Regarding Nigel Nieta, every artical I have read about him indicates he was actually born in Jamaica. You seem to have since found a more reliable source, no need for the temper tantrum. I don't know what you are talking about in terms of Webb and Aneke, I have not edited them since I added them originally. As my user page says I'm still in the learning stages however it was me that added the schoolboy section and have continuously updated the academy and reserve pages since the start of the season to make it up to date and accurate. I don't see the need for the note above each section either, because just like on the main pages the flag indicates the country of birth until representation of another nation. You will also need to correct the wording of your note as some players are going by their grandparents origins and not their parents, as you state. I hope that clears that up. I personally don't want to or think it is a good idea. I thought about it and decided it will become too vast and less accurate. Where would we stop? B team, C team, under 21's, under 19's and so on. To find all this data from the 40's, 50's and 60's would be very difficult. Full international is the pinnacle and a real achievement for the academy. I'm sad about some of the players not getting full recognition but that makes it a more complete page. I have a feeling Gibbs and Wilshere will be joinging the list soon anyway. Wenger mentioned rotation of the vice-captaincy in January(last season at a time when Toure's future was uncertain), this does not relate to the 2009-2010 season. Since then Toure has left the club leaving the position completely open. Fabregas is without doubt the captain and when he has not played this season van Persie has always been his deputy. You can check all the fixtures Fabregas has missed and see who was the captain on the day(you will find it was van Persie). I know you want a physical enouncement but it is not needed when it is obvious he is the vice-captain. Reading you discussion section shows how awkward you are and illogical at times(September 16th prime example). Please leave the Arsenal pages to people who know what they are talking about. Alex Song played 1 game for Arsenal at youth level and it was in the FA Youth Cup against Brentford on December 15th 2005 (he even scored). I'm not arguing that fact and if you read my comments (limited by space), you would realized that. At the time of the appearance he was on loan from Bastia, so was on a professional contract with them and did not belong to Arsenal. Between 2004 - 2005 he made over 30 league appearances for Bastia in Ligue 1 before even playing a game for Arsenal (at any level). He was never on a youth, semi pro or any other contract with Arsenal and is in no way a product of the Arsenal academy. He is a product of Bastia's academy. I'm a hugh Arsenal fan and particularly of there youth work, that is why I created the article in the first place but he doesn't belong with the other players on the list. I spent weeks researching websites, books and programmes before submitting, so was well aware of Song's criteria (Skulason is in a very similar situation but you have not mentioned that, probable due to you never hearing of him). Please don't go back and forth arguing but make positive edits. Add players when they are eligible, like we taked about before with Gibbs and Wilshere. I have since added Szczesny to keep it up to date. I will continue to undo edits on this subject as I'm sure Woolwich (who does an excellent job) will do as well upon reading this. My "personal opinion" has not played any part in its creation and if it had if sure you would have not taken 2 and a half months to correct me.   • Re the undisclosed icon: per WP:MOSICON, icons should not replace text, for the benefit of those using text-only browsers, screen-readers and mobile browsers. They can accompany them, but not replace them. In this case however, there is little point having a graphic of a question mark, when the word "undisclosed" is so much clearer to the layman as to what it actually signifies. Hi, the win percentage only includes wins and not draws. This is how the total managerial ratios are done for all managers of football clubs on wikipedia. With regard to your removal of Frimpong's wikilink on Arsenal F.C., WP:LINK#What generally should be linked states links should be provided for "people, events and topics that already have an article", and as Frimpong has an article (despite your reservations over its notability), a wikilink should be included. Also, if you believe his article to not be notable (with the article failing WP:ATHLETE, he may well not be), then perhaps you could take it to WP:AFD? Arsenal F.C. Academy - International academy graduates

Can you let me know what criteria you are using to recognise these players?

Arsenal's 'A' team was never an organised youth set up. To give you an idea, Leslie Compton played 4 games in Arsenal's 'A' team in 1931/32 by which time he was 19 years old. That season the 'A' team included the likes of Bill Harper (34 years old), Joe Hulme (27)and Len Thompson (30). The 'A' team was used to test triallists and to give games to players returning from injury. Arthur Milton didn't play in Arsenal's 'A' team until he was 20 years old.

Arsenal did not have an organised set up for young players until 1954. Before then young players were either given trials or signed as amateurs which generally meant they played for a non-league team but Arsenal could call upon their services if required. They had an agreement with Chase of Chertsey between 1948 and 1951 whereby Arsenal funded the teams and had first choice of the players but there were only 1 or 2 players that made it through to Arsenal's first team (e.g. Brian Walsh).Goonerak (talk) 09:28, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Goonerak,

First I would like to say I don't want any back and forth on this but a quick solution. When I created the International Academy Graduates section I was hoping to compile a comprehensive list to show the productivity of Arsenal's youth team work over the years. It took me a month to compile the list and make sure it was acurate, using a combination of books, programs and trusted websites. I welcomed anyone to edit if any updates or corretions were needed and compliments to you on the Andy Marriott addition (how did I miss him?). At the time I could not find a decent enough source that confirmed Alex Forsyth played for Scotland but suspect you did, good job.

Regarding the criteria, it is to include players from WWII onwards only as the accuracy of the information would be diluted if any earlier due to lack of good sources. However like you stated the acedemy was officially established in 1954, leaving a nine year gap to fill. I did this by including players that had joined on at a young age as an amateur, apprentice, trainee or equivilant. The list also does not include players that have played professional for other teams before then playing in the youth set up, such as Song or Skulason and many more. It only acknowledges full caps as well, not B teams or youth teams. I was never fully happy with the intro so if you want to reword that, it may help.

Arsenal Squad Transfer Fees

I'm just enquiring as to the transfer fees and sources of playersrecently moving to and from Arsenal. As far as Arsenal Officially goes they have stated that Oxlade-chamberlain and Jenkinson's transfers were for undisclosed ammounts where as the source you listed stated 12 million pounds. I therefore question the credibility of the source as other newspapers such as independent and daily mail have stated his transfer fee at 10 and 15 million pounds respectively. Hi Pereirab,

If you take a look back through the last 6 or 7 seasons this has been the procedure for each "season" page. The way Arsenal are listed as a company gives them the right to state all fees and contracts as undisclosed, however a general concensus appears over time (some quicker than others). We provide a direct link to the Arsenal press release and then the most reliable source relating to a possible fee, BBC, Sky Sports, non tabloid etc. The reason there is so much confusion over the Chamberlain deal is due to the payment plan leaving anywhere from 7 million to 12 million as a possibility. The general impression is that it will eventually total 12 Million so that is what is listed, such as in the cases of Vermaelen's and Koscielny's transfers. Scources are continually changed on such factual things such as height of a player but the good editors do the best they can. Changing the net spending to 0.8 million is making the page truely inaccurate. So basically this is the way it had always been done and provides Arsenal's and a newspaper's source to cover both angles. I hope this answers your question, if it doesn't please let me know. Looking at other football teams pages you will find Arsenal's to be one of if not the best maintained pages due to half a dozen or so dedicated editors.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I agree with the transfer fees being listed as it does make the page look a lot better then undisclosed for everybody I was just curious as to the reliability of the source. Many thanks for clearing this up I now know a bit better how to maintain pages! I did notice that the Arsenal page seems very well maintained by numerous editers hence the reason I generally don't bother with it but when I saw the fees I saw it as a way to learn a little more. Steve Zakuani

Hello Arsenalwiki,

First I would love to say great job on all your efforts at making all the Arsenal pages amazing you really have done a great job and I have also been using your pages as my own templates for Indian Football pages and the pages relating to New York Red Bulls in MLS. I just have a question about former Academy player Steve Zakuani who plays for Seattle Sounders FC also in MLS and he also has a cap for the Congo DR national football team so I am wondering if he should be put into the International Academy Graduates as he is a former youth player turned international player. Hey Arsenalkid,

thank you very much and I'm glad you enjoy the Arsenal pages. The reason Steve Zakuani is not included in the International Academy Graduate section is because he was release at a young age, 13 or maybe 14. He never graduated from the academy and didn't play any games for the U16's or U18's. He has done an excellent job of turning his life around and making career for himself though, hopefully he gets a chance in the Premier League or Championship sometime. Arsenal 2012-13

Hello. I noticed you just changed Arsenal's new season page. The link to Nigeria's national team in the preseason section tends to get broken after several edits for some reason. I don't know if that's a bug in the system or if somebody's vandalizing it. I wonder if you'd be willing to express an opinion in the talk page thread Talk:2012–13 Arsenal F.C. season#Article structure on the specific question of reliably sourcing this season's transfer fees and reporting net transfer spend. That thread, and the post immediately above it, stemmed from my intervention in a revert-war (rather wish I hadn't) and it'd be good if we could try and reach a consensus so that normal editing can resume ASAP. Thank you, and sorry, I hadn't noticed your reply here until now. I posted instructions as to how to apply for page protection at the article talk page, now copied below:
If you want to request page protection (locking the page) you do it at WP:Requests for page protection. The process is outlined there: there's an example to copy, or you can copy one of the existing requests. I'd advise asking for temporary semi-protection: you won't get indefinite until/unless temporary has proved not to be enough, and semi-protection stops anonymous editors from editing while allowing registered editors. Full protection means an edit can only be made by asking an admin to do it, which would be inappropriate for a rapidly changing page like this one.
Not sure that's right any more, to be honest. In the last few days there hasn't really been any anon vandalism, and the one regular anon editor is willing to talk, and to refer to sources, as shown at the Third kit discussion. Maybe full protection for a short time might be a good thing, to encourage people to talk/listen to each other. If people are prepared to say why they think certain things should or shouldn't be in the page, ideally with regard to reliable sources and WP policies like no original research and what Wikipedia is not, particularly the excessive listings of statistics and not a diary bits.

The reason I still ask for protection is because, lets face it, we remove something like say the unreliable predicted transfer fees then there will be an anon who will revert. We all know that and that is why I want protection. I am not disillusioned about this but I am very concerned. I do agree with Arsenalwiki that the page will be bigger than past editions due to all the current information that is allowed to use but lets admit is, the page is overcrowded. The 2012-13 page has the yellow kit as the 3rd kit while the actual Arsenal page has the blue kit. We have unnecessary sections like a loan in section, overall spending section which just says undisclosed when the out section has no undisclosed. Top scorers and disciplinary being kept despite being empty, a starting 11 box which I dont think should be there because that is already mentioned in Appearances and goals. Why is the captain a needed section. We already know that Vermaelan is permanent captain and that he will be changed during Capital One Cup matches or when injured, thats it. There is all these unnecessary things and mistakes that need to be looked at and I wont just step and back and be okay with that, thats not why I edit on wikipedia. Hello again. Wondered if you might be counting me among the "some people" who don't think the page needs locking... Several weeks ago, I wrote (above) that in my opinion the page probably didn't need protecting, because people were communicating and there wasn't much anon vandalism. Since then, the amount of unconstructive edits by IP anons has certainly increased. Out on loan

Thank you for your contribution to Wikipedia. I just noticed that you have undone the change I made to Arsenal F.C. and added Henderson and Watt back to the "Out on loan" list because "they are on the UEFA b squad list". However, according to Arsenal's official squad announcement, Aneke and Roberts are also eligible to play in the Champions League this season, and Eastmond and Boateng, who are also currently out on loan, are eligible for the Premier League. Hi, I was the original person advocating keeping the reserve loans separate so thank you for enforcing that, however there is a little misunderstanding. First Arsenal have done a poor job updating their playing squad details and clarifying eligibility criteria for certain players. The link you have is a general overview of the squad for both competitions and not individual competitions. Aneke, Boateng and Roberts are eligible for the Premier League as they are under 21 and don't need to be included in the 25 man squad list for the season. None of them appear on the official UEFA B squad list for the 12-13 season though, http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2013/clubs/club=52280/squad/index.html . Eastmond is not eligible for either competition (reason for asterisk) due to non inclusion on either of the UEFA squad lists or as part of the 25 man squad even though overaged. Henderson and Watt are part of the UEFA B list and are both eligible for the premier league due to age. Released players 2013

I removed Meade and Watt because on their individual articles it says they have been released so thought they should not be on main page? Surely then if they are released on July 1 then their own articles should say they still play for Arsena? Hi, all players announced as to be released will officially leave the club on July 1st. This is what Arsenal stated in their press release and the date contracts end and the new transfer window opens. If a player officially leaves before that date then by all means removed them. You are correct that Denilson should be removed though as Sao Paulo officially announced his signing on Friday, I will do that now. Thanks for your question. FYI, there is consensus at WP:FOOTY that starting XIs in club/season articles violate WP:OR, and even the Arsenal.com does not support the formation/positions.
