Comments There's a couple of key points I would like to highlight. From a formatting standpoint, I think the code needs to be cleaned up a bit — some of the [edit] links seem to be dangling outside their boxes. --[Done]. I can work to fix this pretty quick. Other than that, archives need to be created for all subsections in the portal, including "News", "Selected picture", "Selected article" and "Did You Know". --[Done]. How does the selection process for "Selected article" and "Selected picture" work? How are users able to nominate and / or vote for selected content? --[Nomination and selection process has been regularized] These are just some of my initial thoughts...I will continue to provide feedback as more content is incorporated into the portal. Additionally, it might help if we reach out to other Wikipedians like Kirill Lokshin to share their thoughts on areas that need improvement. Hope this helps. AreJay16:49, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, some suggestions (partially repeated from above, as well):
Archives!--[Done]
The "more" link after the featured article is insufficient; the actual title should be linked as well.--[Done]
The selected picture needs to be centered.--[Done]
The gap between the two columns of boxes is too wide; probably the percentages are off by more than one.--[Done]
The gap after the "International ties of Bangladesh" box is too large. In general, I think it may be worthwhile to pull all the links out of the multiple topic boxes at the bottom and create a single box of your own; otherwise, you're going to be dependent on outside formatting for the layout of the portal, which isn't a good idea.--[Spacing problem fixed]
The big problem for a featured portal nomination at this point, however, would be that the portal has no track record of being actively maintained. I would strongly recommend that you set up some form of automatic content rotation, at least for the selected article and picture.--[Done; the selected article/biography/picture for current month will be automatically picked]Kirill Lokshin00:57, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
the news listed under the "Bangladesh News" is out of date and full of suicide bombings. Could someone please include other, more up-to-date news? Maybe the capture of Siddiqul Islam and Abdur Rahman or something more up to date.
There is a discussion going on related to India before and after 1947. Following is statement which gives you idea, please read whole discussion before editing:
India after 1947 consists of three countries, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. When we use word India, in articles, refereeing to whole India, links are such that they bring us to present day India (Republic of India), reducing size of pre-1947 India considerably. Is it possible that when we refer to pre-1947 India we use a term which encompasses whole India not just present day India? Please comment.
The portal coding is probably not compatible with Mozilla Firefox (the browser I use at home and office). The layout comes even more strange on it. - Aditya Kabir11:20, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A bit strange
Some of the articles on this page begin with an hyphen (-) for no apparent reason at all (example Jatiyo Sangshad Bhaban), while most are without a hyphen in the beginning (example Rabindranath Tagore) as articles on other portal page archives. Is there any meaning in it? Or is it just sloppy editing? I wonder. - Aditya Kabir11:02, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am having a bit of problem watching the page. Today when I came to change the article and picture I am seeing only a blue screen with any any news, article or picture. Can anybody help?Tarif from Bangladesh11:26, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have made a few major changes to the portal page.I have added a new "Selected biography" section. More importantly, for selected article, selected picture and the newly created selected biography sections, I have created a monthy nomination and selection process. I have been bold to select all three items upto September 2007. For items of October 2007 I have created the nomination page. Please feel free to nominate your candidates or support my nominees.-Arman Aziz11:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Proposing to add new subsections
I'm proposing to add two new subsections in this portal: "Selected Location" and "Selected Map". Please let me know your comments about this.-Arman Aziz06:38, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does other similar portals have these two? Do we have a significant number of those to keep the new sub-sections busy? If yes, I'm completely with you. Just tell me what I can do (though, I may not be able to do all that's required too quickly all the time... real life business, you know). Aditya(talk • contribs)09:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is a new proposal. Portal:Pakistan has a subsection called This week in History. This gave me an idea to start something called This month in Bangladesh - in which we can describe the climate / historical events of the month. For sample, I have startedPortal:Bangladesh/July page. Please lend me a hand in completing it and other 11 monthly pages. Once we have 12 pages with nice photos in all of them, we can start this section. -Arman Aziz00:53, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This may be a very good idea. A section on the main page may also feature selected location. This came to my mind actually seeing yours and Uttam's great work on the geography of Bangladesh. I'd propose that "This month" goes to the right hand side column and "Selected location" goes to the left hand side. Aditya(talk • contribs)04:08, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Most of our location articles now have infobox with maps - but they are still lacking in terms of contents. However, having a section on the portal may actually encourage us to put some materials on specific pages - sort of mini collaboration. I can try to create a mini template to show the location on bangladesh locator map on the portal page. An alternative name of this section can be "Where in Bangladesh" - so that we don't imply that the selected location article is one of our best work in Wikipedia. Let's add these two sections before we push for featured portal status. If we can do all these in a proper way, Portal:Bangladesh may be one of the best portal pages on wikipedia.-Arman Aziz04:36, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have not made much progress other than the July page. I'll wait for others to help me out with the pages for other months. I have a rough idea about which month can talk on which theme:
I'm about to nominate this portal as a featured portal candidate. Before I do so, I wanted to review the featured portal criteria. One thing that may be a problem is - this portal may appear to be self-referential. The citerion says "Aspects of portals that encourage contribution may be self-referential." From that point of view the section on "Things you can do" may be objectionable. The tags "Nominate an article/picture/biography" may be questioned, too. But I can see at least one Featured Portal (Portal:Christianity) also has such tags.
I'd really appreciate comments from other editors on this. My recommendation is to replace "Things you can do" with "Where in Bangladesh" (discussed above) to mantain balance on left and right side of the portal.
Once again I have been bold and made all the changes / upgrades I felt appropriate and have finally nominated this portal for Featured Portal status. I'm confident we should pass with flying colors.-Arman Aziz06:38, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Suggestions
When I first saw the portal, to be very honest, I was just speechless. Even it looks far better than the front page of the Bangle Wikipedia. It is really hard to believe that almost whole portal is prepared on a single hand. Here goes my thumps up to user Arman Aziz.
It's really tough to identify flaws from such a work and I won't walk on that way. Rather I'll try to propose some suggestions, which is pretty easier I guess ;-) .
A new section "On this day" can be added. It won't be too hard to get those information as NTV and other channels in Bangladesh use to show such segment everyday. We may collect Bangladesh related information from those programs and gradually make an archive. [Yes, we can and should do this. But first we need to create the database of events. Staying outside BD, it is difficult for me to do. I can really use some help here. We can start with "This month in Bangladesh", and gradually go to days. This should be a long-term plan, though.]
Starting from month and gradually moving towards the day will be a nice and realistic idea. I am also leaving Bangladesh soon. But, wherever I say, I'll try my level best to prepare this section. Its a promise :-). Niaz bd13:46, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A new section in the name of "Selected location" can be formed. It may show a famous geographical location, a famous place or an important district/division of Bangladesh. [One problem of saying something is "selected" is that, the underlying component - article / picture - needs to be of very good quality. Otherwise that will become an weakness of the portal. Right now most of Bangladesh location aricles are not in such good shape. That's why Aditya and myself discussed and came up with this "Where in Bangladesh..." concept which would allow us to highlight a location without calling it "selected location". I guess this can be a long term plan, too.]
A box providing fast information on Bangladesh can be added. It'll work like a Bangladesh-at-a-glance. [This is indeed a good idea. We can add an infobox at the bottom of the map on the "indices" page and change the section name. I'll try to do something about this.]
When I attempted to do this, I noticed that there is already such an infobox present in the article on Bangladesh. Since for most countries on wikipedia, the factsheet is in the article and not in the portal - I dropped this idea for sake of consistency. The factsheet is just one click away from the "more about Bangladesh" in Portal introduction, anyway.Arman Aziz05:33, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We've been informed that when viewed in FireFox the header of the portal doesn't look as nice as it does in IE. User:B uploaded a comparative screenshot here. I have made some changes to solve this but not sure whether this is working since I am not a FF user. I'd really appreciate if any FireFox user could tell me how it looks now, and even better, upload a screenshot. Arman Aziz06:17, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've used both Firefox and IE at the same time for watching this portal. And the background color (E9EFF8) (including overall features) gives better expression in IE than in FireFox.--NAHID09:49, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nahid, would you be able to upload a latest screenshot from FireFox? I have made some changes and it shouldn't look the same. Arman Aziz10:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have an allergy with IE (I don't know why, but when I look at its blue screen, it stars itching me!). So, I always use FireFox and Opera. From the very beginning, I can see this portal properly. I never had any problem regarding formating or other issues. God knows way! By the way, I'm using its latest version Firefox - 2.0.0.6. Niaz bd13:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have rectified all the problems in FireFox (Version 2.0) that I could see and the portal looks almost same in FireFox and IE now. I hope this closes the issues identified by User:B, User:NAHID and User:Aditya Kabir in differrent occassions. If there are further problems, please raise it here. Arman Aziz07:10, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am planning to have a random rotation for the "Where in Bangladesh" section (similar to Did you know...). Unlike Selected article, biography or picture we don't need to identify good quality materials for this sections. So having monthly nomination and selection doesn't make much sense. However, to have a reasonable pool of items to rotate through I need more suggestions on which locations we can feature on the portal page. Please give me your suggestions (if any) here. Arman Aziz09:22, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We didn't receive any suggestion for the Month of May. If there are no more new suggestions before May 1, from that month we'll do a random rotation of previously highlighted locations. The suggestion page will still remain active for any suggestion for adding locations to the rotation pool. Arman(Talk)09:33, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ragib bhai - thanks to you, too - for starting this portal and also for leading the drive of increasing coverage of Bangladesh related topics on Wikipedia. Bangladesh Portal is the third Asian country portal to be featured on wikipedia. This is a remarkable achievement indeed. Arman(Talk)02:33, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When using Firefox, you can see some empty space on the left between individual selected articles and the section border. Is that done on purpose, or is it a glitch in coding? Aditya(talk • contribs)04:16, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I missed this note earlier. It is a coding problem that I failed to fix. Any help to correct this is very much welcome. Arman(Talk)04:09, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am proposing to initiate random rotation for selected article and biography starting from 2009. Please let me know if anyone have any objections / suggestions. - Arman(Talk)03:21, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Support, of course. 10:51, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
News Section needs to be updated
So many things have already happened in recent days. So, things are need to be updated I think. Can we put the news on execution of 5 men convicted in the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman? Regards, Tanvir17:26, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Have added country category to article (was missing), but is this article correct? Bangladesh would have been part of British India in 1911. Hugo999 (talk) 22:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The News Section of this portal has now been "automated" with Transclude selected current events template.
This is a huge milestone as the maintenance of the news section was the only significant drawback of the portal.
Arman(Talk)05:49, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Picture slideshow
Another development to the Portal: The "Selected Picture" section has now been upgraded to a "Picture slideshow" section; allowing reader to slide through pictures without purging page data. Arman(Talk)11:29, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Automation of Did you know section
I have reverted the Did You Know section back to the manual list. That is because all the items in the automatically filtered DYK list is refreshed very infrequently for Bangladesh. Compared to that the manually maintained list gives link to a diverse range of Bangladesh related topics which enriches the portal more. Arman(Talk)07:01, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Arman. This portal was nominated as a testing ground for automation. I think the test basically worked but isn't appropriate for this page: it's a useful backup for other portals which no one maintains manually. Certes (talk) 10:32, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
