Der Rosenkavalier discography

This is a discography of Der Rosenkavalier,[1][2][3] an opera in three acts with music by Richard Strauss to a German-language libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Der Rosenkavalier was first performed at the Königliches Opernhaus in Dresden on 26 January 1911 under the direction of Max Reinhardt.

This was - as the positioning of the cameras must indicate - a special performance, doubtless filmed in sections. A very occasional tiny non-correspondence of sound and lip-movement indicates that part, at least, of the sound-track was recorded on a different occasion from the actual filming. I understand, indeed, that Dr Paul Czinner, who produced and directed the film, makes three alternative 'pools' of complete sound-material - recording the score in a special recording session, at an actual festival performance, and at the shooting of the film itself. But the 'fake' is an artistic one. That is, it is aimed to give the impression of an opera performance in an opera house, and this is subtly and superbly done."
