Serangan Angkatan Laut Jepang terhadap kapal angkatan laut Inggris ini dilakukan oleh 59 Mitsubishi G3M dan 26 Mitsubishi G4M, dengan pihak Inggris kehilangan dua kapal perang tersebut di atas dan 840 orang tewas dalam aksi, dan pihak Jepang mengalami 5 pesawat ditembak jatuh dan 18 orang tewas dalam aksi.
Pertempuran ini membuktikan gagasan para pendukung perang udara, termasuk Laksamana Isoroku Yamamoto dari Angkatan Laut Jepang, bahwa medan pertempuran laut di masa depan akan berada di udara. Dalam pertempuran tersebut, pemimpin Inggris saat itu Winston Churchill menulis dalam bukunya bahwa hilangnya kedua kapal ini dalam Pertempuran Teluk Malaya merupakan pengalaman paling mengejutkan dalam Perang Dunia II.
