Meskipun Australia terisolasi dari front pertempuran utama, terdapat aktivitas angkatan laut Blok Poros di perairan Australia selama Perang Dunia II . Sebanyak 54 kapal perang Jerman dan Jepang memasuki perairan Australia antara tahun 1940 dan 1945 dan menyerang kapal, pelabuhan, dan target lainnya. Serangan yang paling terkenal adalah tenggelamya HMAS Sydney oleh Jerman pada November 1941, pengeboman Darwin oleh Jepang pada Februari 1942, dan serangan terhadap Pelabuhan Sydney pada Mei 1942.
