Paul Bunyan

Paul Bunyan adalah seorang tokoh fiksi cerita rakyat Amerika.[1] Ia digambarkan memiliki kekuatan yang sangat besar yang didasarkan pada seorang penebang kayu yang hidup pada abad ke-19 di Amerika Serikat.[1]

Sebagai tokoh fiksi, ia dikenal oleh rakyat Amerika secara luas dikarenakan kekuatannya, serta sifatnya yang pekerja keras, terampil, pandai memecahkan masalah serta selalu ceria.[1] Walaupun kisah tentang Paul Bunyan diceritakan dari mulut ke mulut sejak abad ke-19, tulisan mengenai dirinya tidak muncul sebelum awal abad ke-20.[1]

Jurnalis James McGillivary menulis tentang Bunyan dalam seri esai berjudul The Round River Drive yang terbit di surat kabar Midwestern antara tahun 1906-1910. Namun kisahnya benar-benar mulai dikenal sejak tulisan-tulisan mengenai dirinya banyak diterbitkan.

Banyak cerita Bunyan diterbitkan oleh penerbit Red River dan penerbit yang lain. Dalam cerita tersebut Bunyan digambarkan sedang menggali Danau Besar untuk membuat kubangan bagi sapi raksasanya.[2]

Kekaguman akan Paul Bunyan sebagai figur cerita rakyat terus tumbuh dan berbagai referensi mengenai dirinya tertuang dalam cerita, kartun, puisi dan lagu serta berbagai festival komunitas dan kompetisi menebang kayu yang dapat ditemukan di berbagai wilayah Amerika dimana menebang kayu masih menjadi tradisi.
