Banyak orang yang melontarkan pendapat terperinci mengenai hal ini; penulis kolom saran, Ann Landers, mengatakan bahwa orientasi tisu toilet menjadi topik yang paling populer (15.000 surat pembaca pada tahun 1986) dan kontroversial sepanjang sejarah kolomnya. Pendukung kedua belah pihak memberi alasan estetika, keramahan, kebersihan, penghematan kertas, kemudahan menyobek tisu, dan kesesuaian dengan suasana sekitar seperti kendaraan rekreasi dan hewan peliharaan. Beberapa penulis menghubungkan orientasi tisu toilet dengan usia, jenis kelamin, atau pandangan politik. Ada pula survei yang mengaitkan hal ini dengan status sosial-ekonomi.[2]
Solusinya beragam, mulai dari kompromi sampai menggunakan gantungan terpisah dan kamar mandi terpisah atau bersikap masa bodoh. Bill Jarrett mengusulkan penyeragaman orientasi tisu toilet secara nasional. Curtis Batts ingin memperkenalkan gantungan tisu toilet baru yang swivels from one orientation to the other.[3]
