Pada tahun 2007, setelah terjadi perselisihan antara Finkelstein dan Alan Dershowitz, masa bakti Finkelstein di DePaul dihentikan.[1] Finkelstein dikenai cuti administratif untuk tahun akademik 2007–2008, dan pada 5 September 2007, ia menyatakan pengunduran dirinya setelah menerima ganti rugi dari pihak universitas.[2][3]
Dalam pernyataan resminya, DePaul membenarkan keputusannya untuk menghentikan masa bakti Finkelstein sambil menyatakan bahwa keputusan tersebut tidak dipengaruhi oleh pihak luar.[4]
