Makanan yang dimodifikasi secara genetik di Amerika Serikat

Amerika Serikat adalah penanam terbesar tanaman komersial hasil rekayasa genetika (RG) di dunia, tetapi bukannya tanpa penolakan, baik dari dalam negeri maupun internasional.

Monsanto, yang berbasis di Creve Coeur, Missouri, Amerika Serikat, adalah produsen utama benih RG dan menjual 90% benih RG dunia.[1]

Sejumlah organisasi yang berbasis di Amerika Serikat menentang atau merasa khawatir tentang RG karena berbagai alasan. Kelompok-kelompok seperti Center for Food Safety (Pusat Keamanan Pangan), kelompok advokasi sains nirlaba Union of Concerned Scientists (Uni Ilmuwan Peduli), Greenpeace dan Dana Dunia Untuk Alam (WWF) telah menyatakan keprihatinan mereka tentang lemahnya persyaratan Food and Drug Administration (FDA) untuk pengujian tambahan terhadap produk Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) (Organisme hasil rekayasa genetika), kurangnya pelabelan yang disyaratkan dan FDA menganggap bahwa GMO adalah "Umumnya diakui aman". Beberapa dari kelompok ini mempertanyakan apakah FDA memiliki hubungan yang "terlalu dekat" dengan perusahaan yang meminta persetujuan untuk produk mereka.[2]
