Dalam istilah militer, desersi adalah pengingkaran tugas atau jabatan tanpa permisi (pergi, bebas atau meninggalkan) dan dilakukan dengan tanpa tujuan kembali. Hal ini berseberangan dengan absensi tak terotoritasi (bahasa Inggris: unauthorized absence, UA) atau absensi tanpa meninggalkan (bahasa Inggris: absence without leave, AS AWOL; Persemakmuran: AWL) yang merujuk kepada absensi temporer.

Prancis

Pada masa Perang Dunia I, sekitar 600 prajurit Prancis dieksekusi atas dakwaan desersi.[1]

Jerman

Pada Perang Dunia I, hanya 18 orang Jerman yang mendesersi pada Perang Dunia Pertama yang dieksekusi.[1] Pada perang dunia 2, 15,000 orang-orang Jerman yang mendesersi di Wehrmacht dieksekusi.
