Richard Tarnas naît en à Genève[1] Il est diplômé de l'université Harvard en 1972. Il obtient son doctorat en 1976 au Saybrook Institute.
Il est l'auteur de divers ouvrages, The Passion of the Western Mind (1991) et Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View (2006). Il a été président de l'International Transpersonal Association et a été membre du conseil d'administration de l'Institut Jung de San Francisco[1].
L'astronauteSusan Helms cite The Passion of the Western Mind comme l'un des cinq livres qui ont inspiré sa carrière d'astronaute[2].
