Fernando de Saboya (Florencia, 15 de noviembre de 1822[1]​-Turín, 10 de febrero de 1855), fue un noble italiano de la Casa de Saboya.

Primeros años de vida

Segundo hijo de Carlos Alberto de Cerdeña y de María Teresa de Toscana. Fue bautizado el 16 de noviembre de 1822 en la sala de los estucos del palacio Pitti, siendo apadrinado por sus abuelos maternos, Fernando III de Toscana y su esposa María Fernanda de Sajonia.[1]​ Se convirtió en duque de Génova en 1831.

Vida pública

Durante las guerras que tuvieron lugar en la península italiana en 1848 y 1849, el príncipe Fernando comandó una división del ejército. Después de que se restableció la paz en Italia, fue nombrado comandante general de artillería y se dedicó a realizar mejoras.[2]

Elegido el 10 de junio de 1848 como rey de Sicilia por el gobierno secesionista que siguió a la revolución independentista, renunció al trono para no ofender al legítimo soberano Fernando II de las Dos Sicilias (quien abandonaría a sus aliados italianos en plena primera guerra de independencia y firmaría la paz con el Imperio austríaco). Durante dicha primera guerra de independencia, Fernando de Saboya se comportó valerosamente, mereciendo la medalla de oro al valor militar.[3]

Durante la guerra de Crimea, había sido designado para comandar el cuerpo auxiliar del Reino de Cerdeña, pero su salud disminuyó, lo que significaba que no podía aceptar la misión.[2]

Su estado de salud no se recuperó y murió en Turín a la edad de treinta y dos años. Está enterrado en la cripta real de la basílica de Superga, en las cercanías de Turín. A su muerte le sucedió su hijo Tomás, de tan solo un año de edad.

Matrimonio e hijos

Contrajo matrimonio el 22 de abril de 1850 en la Catedral de la Santísima Trinidad de Dresde con la princesa María Isabel de Sajonia (4 de febrero de 1830 – 14 de agosto de 1912). Tuvieron dos hijos:
