World Youth Day 2027
World Youth Day 2027 will be a Catholic festival taking place in Seoul, South Korea. This was announced by Pope Francis at the end of the closing Mass of World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.[1]. It will also be the first WYD to take place in Asia since Manila in 1995 as well as the first to ever take place in a Christian-minority country.[2] ThemeOn 24 September 2024, Cardinal Farrell announced that the theme of the event will be “Take Courage, I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).[3] LogoThe logo for the 2027 World Youth Day was also launched on September 24, 2024. [4] It was designed by Jin Su-hyeon, a 26-year old researcher at the Hongik University Environmental Art Research Institute.[5]. The logo consists of the cross and the 'ieung', which is placed right in the middle of the cross, and its colour palette used are red, blue, and black. The cross is formed with two brush strokes, coloured red and blue. The red stroke represents "the blood-stained martyrdom", and the blue stroke represents "the youth's energy". In the centre of the cross, a circular figure ('ieung'), envisions the glory of Jesus' victory - a call back to the theme for this edition's WYD. The Black colour in the palette signifies the mysterious future awaiting the youth. Seoul, in the logo, is calligraphed using Hangul but is formed using the letters 'W', 'Y', and 'D', signifying unity among youth from around the world who will all meet in Seoul. [6] The brush strokes in the logo were inspired from the painting 'Inwang jesaekdo' by the late Joseon-era artist Gyeomjae Jeong Seon. The painting depicts the view of Inwang Mountain in Seoul after the rain. [7] References
