Not sure if anyone still reads this, but I just had this thought. Sonic Origins Plus releases on June 23, and look how close we are to having every game in the compilation to GA or better. Skeptical that this would qualify as a Good Topic, but I thought this would be kinda cool to have the remaining 3 (or 4 if you count Sonic Origins) articles to GA before the game releases. I've already started on Sonic Drift. Red Phoenixtalk01:18, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are some minor things to be done on the Sega Saturn version. While the article itself talks about the developer Working Designs as being the publisher of the game I am having a lot of trouble finding reliable sources for a lot of things. If anyone has a copy of the manual for the version published by Spaz, please post the page numbers the references are on so it can be noted as a source to prevent removal of information.
- Items that need addressing.
1. In the USA release of Sega Ages in order to get all three games to fit on one CD some cuts had to be made to the sound track. Outrun had its original arcade tracks removed. The only thing that was kept in was the arranged sound. Because of the way the music sounded it seemed appropriate for driving after all according to them.
2. The three games seem to have it's cheat codes modified, unreleased , disabled or unknown from Japanese versions. Later on after the release of this compilation, Working Designs actually posted a code in their hint guide section on the now defunct site that told how to enable smooth mode and some other cool things they changed. I could probably use the Wayback machine to find the information on this.
Also speaking of codes through trial and error, at random I had an idea of mashing buttons during the Sega Logo and Sega Ages Logo with controller 2 and somehow I was able to get a dip switch menu for both After Burner 2 and Space Harrier but it did not work all the time.
@JasonHockeyGuy: I'm just going to ping you, you should get a notification. Most of what you suggested is original research so we would need reliable sources to add to the article. Regarding Spaz, they were a division of Working Designs. See images of back cover of the game. TarkusABtalk/contrib01:21, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So we don't clutter up my user talk, and to move discussion away from Talk:List of Sonic the Hedgehog characters as we'd no longer be talking about that list specifically, I'm opening up discussion here and inviting all users to make edits and discussions. My theory, from looking at the history, is that there may be an article here if the fluff and listicle-based stuff can be stripped away; there are reliable sources that discuss Amy's concept and creation, and her role as a female video game character and theory on that, as well as her evolution over the years. That's the kind of real-world discussion that makes a fictional character notable to more than just fans of the series.
In my sandbox I've copied over the most recent version of Amy Rose that isn't a redirect. I'd also like to link this version, which is the GA-promoted version from April 2014, and unfortunately is even more full of fluff but may have some salvageable bits as well. Hopefully these resources will help editors who wish to pitch in to see if we can make this a reality. Red Phoenixtalk01:10, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, you've at least been trying with your attempts to find sources. Even if they haven't all been good, the effort is still commendable. We'll filter through and see what's useable and what isn't, and we'll try to salvage as much as we can. Red Phoenixtalk01:38, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice. Thanks for doing so. I'll try to streamline my process for finding sources in the future. It stinks when most of your sources are actually unusable. NintenBOUND (talk) 14:39, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:VG/S is a great guide to this, though; the great editors at the Video games WikiProject have extensively discussed these sources and come up with a general consensus on many sources of information as to whether they’re reliable or not. Otherwise, WP:RSP is a good resource as well about more general sources such as common newspapers or tabloids, and what they write about video games applies under the same guidelines. If you have any questions about the reliability of a source as well, I can usually answer that, and would seek a second opinion if I don’t feel I can. Just wanted to mention I'm still working on this. Some important real-life stuff came up in the past month and I've had to focus hard on that instead. That being said, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far in using the scissors to trim this down. I feel like we're cutting the fluff and it's making the notable parts stand out more. Red Phoenixtalk12:18, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ready for evaluation
Okay, so I've finished my scissors test, and did a fair bit of addition as well by adding info that was missing such as voice actresses, a couple of quotes about her gameplay, etc. Did a lot to try and trim out the fluff as well. It's not "done" by any means, but we're at a point now where we'll know whether or not this has a chance. I'm curious to see what the community thinks and if this is viable before BOLDly moving it to main space. Red Phoenixtalk02:09, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here are some urls from NatwonTSG2's earlier sandbox, if they're needed:
I already did that with what I felt was usable :-) . Unsure yet on those links; the content inside is pretty thin, but maybe there’s a bit or two to mine out of it. Red Phoenixtalk17:48, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like some honest feedback on User:Red Phoenix/sandbox/Amy Rose and whether or not it meets the threshold of notability to be moved into mainspace at this time.
It's not "done", but by now the scissors test and additions of secondary sources are mostly complete enough that we should know if this is viable, if I need to put a bit more effort in, or if this just isn't going to work. I do want honest feedback; if it's not going to work, I want to know that too, but I don't think this sandbox looks any worse than Knuckles the Echidna, to give my thoughts.
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.
Some of my thought processes, if questions arise:
I don't like primary sourcing plot elements to the games themselves whenever possible, whether or not it's technically acceptable by policy, so the little bit said in secondary sources is what I favored. Roles too small to have even a mention in secondary sources, I just removed. (Exception for Sonic and the Black Knight solely because I felt Amy playing a more notable fictional character in the Lady of the Lake was worthy of being mentioned).
As much as I could, I did try to restrict usage of Valnet sources and I removed a number of "listicles" as well. Some Valnet and listicles do remain as containing more detail that doesn't exist elsewhere, but I've tried to be choosy and as thin as possible. I did favor a Valnet secondary source for a plot summary over just citing the game.
Pros to Amy's notability:
We have development info and some reception, two core tenets of notability for video game elements
Discussion of her stereotype as a "Ms. Male" character in an academic sense, and some refutation that Amy is evolving beyond simply that.
High number of video game appearances, including more frequent playable ones in recent years and not just in spinoffs, now cited to secondary sources even if just in passing mentions for each.
In-depth coverage of Amy specifically, especially articles specifically focused on her, seem to be mostly limited to Valnet sources. There is a fair bit of substance in other sources, but nothing monumental.
I feel this isn't ready yet. I feel it's a good base and the writing is pretty solid, but just glancing at the current writing it doesn't seem substantive enough to justify a split off the list entry. I'm free to hear reasons for disagreement but I'm not really seeing a strong enough indication of notability due to a lack of strong sources focusing on Amy, which I've noticed is a strong problem with Sonic characters as a whole due to the surprisingly large lack of SIGCOV on them. This is definitely worth monitoring if more coverage pops up in the future but its current state just feels too weak as it stands. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 02:09, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm completely understanding of your position - I'm a firm believer in a high standard for sourcing. That being said, you mentioned a lack of strong sources and it being an issue with Sonic characters. From reviewing their articles and reference sections, Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog), Knuckles the Echidna, and Doctor Eggman don't meet this standard, either. If that is the standard it should be, a reasonable position, perhaps at a later time all of them need to be discussed on whether they're notable enough for articles. Red Phoenixtalk02:31, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems there hasn't really been movement on consensus for any of the number of issues up for debate in relevance to this. Nothing on the notability of Sonic characters. No real movement on the status of Valnet sources and conferred notability. No real discussion on the impact of listicles, all of which could have an impact here. As such, I think the best move for now is simply to table this draft. I won't delete it from my userspace; I'll keep a hold of it until the relevant conversations restart organically and develop a better idea of consensus before I decide if it's worth continuing to work on or not. I know it's been a while, but I've found some more sources for this topic, if you're interested. (WARNING: SPOILERS! IF YOU DO NOT WANT ANY, DO NOT LOOK HERE!)
