GA Cup timing

We've had two GA Cups thus far, and both were successful. It looks like we're here to stay. I think that for now, running the competition twice a year works well. Initially, we were afraid that our efforts would conflict with the WP:Wikicup, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Therefore, it makes sense that we'd conduct the GA Cup from January 1 to April 30, and again from July 1 to October 31. Discuss, please. I feel that two times a year works only if there is a big enough number of interested editors, since I doubt that many have the time and energy to compete in such a time-consuming competition so often. I would definitely sit out if the next one starts January. Zwerg Nase (talk) 21:05, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The two competitions thus far were within a year of each other, but the first one began in Oct. 2014 and ended early in 2015, in Feb. Then we all had a 4-month break before this last one began July 1. I suppose there's nothing that requires us to have two competitions within the same calendar year. I propose this, then: conduct two competitions per year, but separate them out by 4-5 months. That would mean that we'd start the next one March 1 or April 1 and would run until June 30 or July 31. The one after that would begin Nov. 1 or Dec. 1 and end either Feb. 28 or March 30. We could discuss if we want a competition over the holidays. I think I definitely had less enthusiasm for the second cup because it felt quite soon after the first (and I wasn't even in the finals). But maybe it was more due to the timing of the cup than the actual space between them. Although I doubt any of us would agree on which are the best months to run the competition—maybe running it on a rota that's not quite the same every year makes sense, because we'd all get our perfect timing eventually. It's really hard to anticipate (probably impossible) when's the best time to run a competition. I think that it's a combination of when it starts and ends and the time period. I think we learned this time that summer's not the best time. Therefore, I propose that at least for the next competition, we should start in March. If we wanted to hold one after that, we could even start on Jan. 1, 2017 to avoid the holidays. I also propose that we hold off on a decision until after the next GA Cup. End of competition

It's been suggested that we extend the finals to the very end of the last month, as the WikiCup does. Please discuss.

Good topics?

Since including Good article reassessments seemed to work well, could we also extend the contest to include good topics? Perhaps award points similar to reassessments, where any and all feedback is awarded 2 points.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 01:55, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Figureskatingfan: Why did we end up not including good topics last year? Was it too complicated to decide whether feedback is "constructive" or not? MrWooHoo (talk) 03:40, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Proposals

User:Grondemar has made a series of proposals to for how to conduct the GA Cup in the future. See User:Grondemar/Essays/GA Cup proposal and the associated talk page. I put this notice here to ensure that everyone interested see it. His proposals are interesting, and worth considering. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:06, 9 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016 GA Cup

As a judge and one of the co-creators of this competition, I feel bad that I've neglected things here. Part of that is simply overwhelming busy-ness, but I'm committed to seeing the competition continue, anyway. I've looked over some of the feedback and suggestions, including User:Grondemar's proposals referred to above.

  • Timing. Grondemar's proposals are interesting, but I haven't seen anyone willing to embrace them. To be honest, I'm not, either (see busy-ness as mentioned above). I still support conducting the GA Cup twice a year, including the date of the next competition beginning March 1. I'm willing to spearhead that. I also propose that we discuss the 2nd GA Cup of the year after the end of the 1st one.
  • Themes. I like the idea of having themes; Grondemar's idea was to have seasonal themes, but I think that we can think of others. For example, the WP: WikiCup is holding a parallel competition, in conjunction with this year's Wikipedia:Year of Science, for science articles. Perhaps we can jump on that bandwagon, and give special awards for the most GA reviews of science articles.
  • Elimination of rounds and pools: I'm against this idea. The GA Cup, like the WikiCup, is a tournament-style competition. I'd like to keep this tradition. Plus, it's what we're used to and seems to the easiest to set up and manage. I'm willing to change my mind about it, if the consensus is that we change to another style.
  • I like the idea of a champs league, but I think we should wait until the competition has a bit more history. It'd be fun to have an invitational of past winners, but I think it's too early for it.

My major proposal is starting again in March; it's my intention to do so unless consensus decides otherwise. Please discuss, and thanks for your consideration. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:45, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I myself wouldn't be opposed to eliminating pools but keeping the rounds - all competitors who hit a certain point threshold advance to the next round. I'm not going to push that this be done, but that's what I personally favor.
I think the idea of a science-themed contest as well - GA Cup tends to work in tandem with WikiCup, so why not keep that tradition?
Finally, it seems that, since there is talk of a backlog drive for GANs, we get the next contest going for March 1.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 06:35, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll contact the YOS guy and make the proposal. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 17:06, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
