Akan slowly taking over part of Ghana in our articles

A part of Ghana is slowly disappearing from articles and being renamed Akanland. See the edits by MarkMysoe (talk · contribs) and the discussion at WP:BLPN#Nana Akufo-Addo. Dougweller (talk) 17:42, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

List of Akans has been deleted

An article on my watchlist, List of Akans just got summarily deleted without due process, apparently as a punitive measure against the main contributor who was banned - and without prejudice to any argument that List of Akans might actually be an encyclopedic topic. I gather that the user was banned for promoting some kind of "Akan-only" identity for Ghanaians in general, or something like that, I don't know for sure. But because of this punitive measure, there is now no List of Akans, who are certainly a prominent group in their own right, and it may be risky to recreate such a list. Yes, I'm still cleaning up the mess that he left, sometimes reverting almost a year of article history. In some cases it may be worth going through and rescuing legitimate edits, but I'm not going to spend the time on it. As far as I can remember, the list was mostly Mark's creation, and therefore suspect in its entirety. And yes, Mark went on a racist rampage across hundreds of Ghanaian articles, insisting for example that the Ewe etc. are illegal aliens responsible for all of Ghana's problems and that the country needs to be ethnically purified. — kwami (talk) 21:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I'm being somewhat cavalier in deleting articles that MarkMysoe created, since I have absolutely no reason to assume good faith at all. That doesn't mean you can't recreate the list if you feel it's a valid topic. —Xezbeth (talk) 21:06, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Akan

In 2009 I created several surname pages (for example, Quaye, Owusu, Ayew, Boakye) which, in the conventional manner, list people with that surname who have articles in Wikipedia, linking to their pages. Whenever I create such pages, I include brief information about each person, taken from their Wikipedia article.

I am puzzled by recent changes to these pages (and other surname pages) which have added the word "Akan" to almost every line in the page. I welcome the addition to the preamble to state that the name is an Akan name, but to change each person's entry to include the word Akan seems excessive, especially since this now makes the entry different from the description of the person on the page it links to.

I am hoping that posting a message here will help to resolve this strange development, and that people with a knowledge of nationality, ethnicity and sensitivities in Ghana will be able to advise me whether there is consensus for these changes. My own proposal would be for the introductory section on the page to outline the surname's Akan origins, but for the summary information about each individual to be kept completely consistent with the information on the page it links to. I also think that, particularly for biographies of living people, any statement on Wikipedia about a person's ethnicity (eg "Akan") should cite a reliable reference.

Anita De Sosoo have an article I believe she is a high ranking government official and has gained international attention. [1] She has also appeared on Adomon FM. Yennenga

The article on Yennenga needs a picture, and I have found some photographs of various statues of her. However, I have been unable to locate copyright information about them. If anyone can locate a picture and upload it under a free or fair use license it would greatly improve the article. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Takoradi Harbour

I'm no expert here, so I was hoping someone could let me know: Do these images look like they are from Takoradi Harbour? They are certainly form a harbour, and one photo mentions railway jetties. Did/does the Habour at Accra connect to the port like this? I'm assuming the big crane is for moving railways containers onto boats, etc. Thanks - TheMightyQuill (talk) 09:35, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Ghana to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ghana/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. Candidate for pilot testing, round one

Hello, WikiProject Ghana!

On the recommendation of Masssly, I am happy to announce that this WikiProject has been selected for the first round of WikiProject X pilot testing! Pilot testing candidates were selected on the basis for potential success of the WikiProject.

The goal of WikiProject X is to improve the WikiProject experience through research, design, and experimentation. On that basis, we've prepared a new WikiProject design template based around modules. These modules include features you are already familiar with, such as article alerts, but also new features such as automated work lists, a feed of discussions taking place on the 3,474 talk pages tagged by WikiProject Ghana, and a new member profile system with opt-in notifications. The new design is available for your review at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ghana/New. Please let me know what you think. (Note that some of the modules depend on output from other bots, meaning there will be some visual inconsistencies for now. I hope to resolve this in the long term.)

The next steps:

  1. If you are all satisfied with the design, I will implement it on the WikiProject page. Unless there are major points of contention, I hope to get this done by Friday, July 10.
  2. Using information from Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Ghana, I will work on recruiting new members for the WikiProject. I will also reach out to your current listed members.
