Amateur Athletic Association

Regarding the page Amateur Athletic Association (basketball), was there an actual league by this name? The lead says, The Amateur Athletic Association is an amateur basketball league that was created in 1897. It hosts the annual AAU National Tournament, but none of its sources support it. At best, it seems like some WP:OR on Amateur Athletic Union and it's annual tournament, somewhat covered by List of AAU men's basketball champions. —Bagumba (talk) 03:38, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've WP:PRODed it. —Bagumba (talk) 03:45, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there nothing about it on Newspapers.com? Alvaldi (talk) 07:15, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't successful. It showed up some stuff for other countries' Amateur Athletic Association. Some local cities might have had a <city name> Amateur Athletic Association in AAU, but that's not some national league. —Bagumba (talk) 10:08, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also did take a short peek on Newspapers.com, and while there are alot of hits for Amateur Athletic Association, what they are referencing is all over the place. Couldn't find anything on a national league but then again I didn't look too deep. Regardless, I've no objections to the prod. Alvaldi (talk) 11:12, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is a weird one. Lots of the results I'm seeing appear to be typos, where people clearly meant to say "Amateur Athletic Union." None of the references or external links in the article offer anything helpful. Zagalejo (talk) 18:33, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Association with WP:OLYMPICS

Oscar Goodman (basketball) is showing up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/New articles. Is this project related to the Olympics in a way that this should happen? Need help with new article name

Coach Michael "Mike" Miller is an absurd article name for several reasons. There is already an article named Mike Miller (basketball, born 1964), any suggestions what title we could move the new article to? Rikster2 (talk) 20:20, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How about Michael Miller (basketball)? Googling that along with LACC brings up several articles about him. Alvaldi (talk) 21:01, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, moved the article. Thanks for the suggestion Rikster2 (talk) 20:57, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is a retired/inactive player a sportsman?

A lot of “21st century xxxx sportsmen” categories are being added to athletes whose careers ended in the 20th century. Is this appropriate? Once a sportsman, always one? Seems like unless the person is still active as a coach, executive, etc they shouldn’t appear in those categories, but perhaps others have a differing opinion Rikster2 (talk) 20:54, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If no other opinions, I will continue to remove the century sportsmen/sportswomen category for which the individual was not active. Rikster2 (talk) 18:06, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shortening long team names in infobox

Hi. Is there an established consensus on shortening long team names in a player's infobox? Alextigers has changed South East Melbourne Phoenix to S.E. Melbourne Phoenix in multiple player infoboxes, including South West Metro Pirates (which has no current page) to S.W. Metro Pirates at Mitch Creek [1]. Hoping to hear from others. Thanks. DaHuzyBru (talk) 09:48, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DaHuzyBru: Name of the page should be used unless the team itself uses the shortened form. Looks like there is no consistency regarding the name, because even the team itself uses both forms. – sbaio 10:08, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd generally say use the page title name, and if that's not the actual WP:COMMONNAME, then it should be moved first (WP:RM, if appropriate). Unless, there's some WP:IAR case. —Bagumba (talk) 10:26, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd agree on this. Use the article title except disambiguating words. If people insist on pipe linking, open an WP:RM. This applies to all articles, not just basketball ones. Howard the Duck (talk) 12:38, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, there's 2024–25 S.E. Melbourne Phoenix season.—Bagumba (talk) 10:35, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shorten only for infobox purposes. It’s so the team name fits in the basketball career category. S.W. was a mistake. Alextigers (talk) 11:07, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at someone like Zhou Qi on mobile view, teams like Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Guangdong Southern Tigers anyways wrap lines, so its not like we're avoid wrapping altogether. —Bagumba (talk) 11:51, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not a fan of trying to avoid wrapping as everyone's device is different – phones, laptops, different browsers etc. I understand that the official team logo has "S.E. Melbourne Phoenix", but general driveby readers shouldn't have to look elsewhere to find out what "S.E." stands for. I have never seen "R.G. Valley Vipers" be used to avoid that name wrapping. DaHuzyBru (talk) 12:11, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The page name should be used. Don’t want to see people following this example and starting to use “LA Lakers” and the like. Rikster2 (talk) 15:54, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's fine. Will just use S.E. Melbourne for team pages and maps only on main pages. Alextigers (talk) 05:17, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

BRFA overlapping WikiProjects Basketball & College basketball

A few months ago, due to this BRFA, about 31% of all pages tagged with {{WikiProject College basketball}} now overlap with {{WikiProject Basketball}}. Is this desired by both WikiProjects? See originating user discussion here, which hasn't really gone anywhere.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:42, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The two projects have different scopes. WP:College basketball covers (primarily American) college basketball, while WP:Basketball covers professional leagues other than the National Basketball Association (NBA), FIBA play and anything else about the sport not explicitly covered by the other 2 basketball projects (college basketball and NBA). It is expected there will be some overlap, with an example being a player who plays college basketball then has a professional career in Spain. Rikster2 (talk) 15:49, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I expect there to be some overlap. However, {{WikiProject Basketball|women=yes}} was blanketly added to all women's basketball, college and professional. Instead, {{WikiProject Women's sport|basketball=yes}} should have been added to pages without {{WikiProject Basketball}}, since there is no |women= parameter for {{WikiProject College basketball}}.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  15:57, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm only a light participant here. But I'n not aware of the Basketball project explictly stating it's more of a men's basketball project. In any event, each project can decide their own scope per WP:PROJSCOPE.—Bagumba (talk) 16:15, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tom.Reding: Can you state explicitly what was done that you are unsure should have been done? Is it that women's college basketball topics don't also need to be tagged under WikiProject Basketball? —Bagumba (talk) 16:28, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think these and other similar edits should have happened: [2][3][4], which I think is confirmed by this discussion.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  17:37, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, in those examples WP:Basketball is not needed. Those are purely college basketball topics and WP:College basketball is sufficient Rikster2 (talk) 17:49, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:WikiProject Basketball/Women's basketball#Scope should be updated then. It has:
  • Professional basketball, including the WNBA and other countries' top leagues
  • US college basketball at the D1 level as well as other divisions of US College basketball
Bagumba (talk) 17:58, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that it should be rewritten. I’m not sure who wrote it, but I don’t remember a consensus discussion around it. WP:Basketball doesn’t deal with college hoops at all. Rikster2 (talk) 18:04, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to have been there from Day 1.[5] A lot of stuff doesn't go through formal consensus; no problem, fix issues once they're detected. —Bagumba (talk) 18:11, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
College basketball in the Philippines, while initially influenced by the Americans, is not a part of WP:CBBALL, so it falls under this {WP:B-BALL) project. Philippine college basketball articles usually follow guidelines set by US projects, but some are adjusted to the Philippine experience. I'd suggest to keep off the Philippine college basketball articles for now, up until it is agreed that they are included in WP:CBBALL. Howard the Duck (talk) 00:50, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There may be confusion as the U.S. has the NCAA, but the Philippines also has the similarly named NCAA (Philippines). These are different organizations and act independently of each other. While the US NCAA can be said to be a governing body, the Philippine NCAA is more of like a "conference" in US sporting terminology, but with quite better powers than US conferences do. BIG 3 consistency?

Hello, I was looking through some articles specifically Gary Payton, Allen Iverson, Rashad McCants, George Gervin, Nick Young (basketball), etc.

Some have big 3 as part of their information, some as part of their infobox, some have none at all. I don't want to edit them just to start an edit war, but I do want consistency. What's the resolution on Big 3? Should it be present? Should it be in the infobox? Tell me so I know which pages should edit Remi1771 (talk) 00:32, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Past discussions have said it shoudn't be in the infobox nor opening paragraph, and possibly not in the lead altogether (1 2) —Bagumba (talk) 14:33, 1 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Brandon Johns, Jr.

Can anyone tell me if Brandon Johns had done anything that would rise to the level of an infobox highlight during his international play to date.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:31, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
