How to add an image.

Simply add "id = [/[Image:Example.JPG|40px]]" to your userbox code in order to add an image. (Minus the slash)

Maybe I'm blind but I could NOT find that information on this page. I spent several, unnecessary, minutes attempting to figure it out. Eventually I just looked at the code on this page. Placing Userboxes BELOW infoboxes?

Typo in article?

Hi, I'm a noob, so sorry if I'm being an idiot. In this article the Combining tables and the boxboxtop template section reads: “Yet another method of grouping boxes is done by combining Examples 2 and 4 together. Example 2 breaks interoperability...”. Shouldn't this read “...combining Example 3 and 4 together.” and “Example 3 breaks interoperability...”? I'm using Firefox and can testify that Example 3 does render incorrectly (My yellow userboxes collapsible frame, when expanded, leaves the header of the My purple userboxes unmoved, obscuring the first userbox; the My purple userboxes collapsible frame works fine though). This agrees with the text next to Example 3, which reads: “Right now, this method should not be used because it only works properly in Internet Explorer (although works to a degree in other browsers), and makes the boxes inaccessible to users with ECMAScript (jScript/JavaScript) disabled!”. This seems to point to a typo in the Combining tables and the boxboxtop template section, where "Example 2" should actually read "Example 3". Image suitability

Category links within userbox text

What is the purpose of category links within userbox text? For example: This [[:Category:Foo Wikipedians|user]] is a Foo. Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:20, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

That's the highly undesirable practice that users who transclude such a userbox are automagically added to that category. -- Skysmurf  (Talk) 22:32, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Actually, it's even a step beyond that. The auto-categorization of users at least does something – good or bad, YMMV from case-to-case – whereas this just pipe-links a certain word of phrase to a category. -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:40, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Padding on only one side?

If I want to edit the padding on the info section of the userbox, is there a way to do that? I'm looking for the analogue to the CSS padding-left property. I tried "info-p-left" and "info-pl". Userboxtop/bottom templates seem to screw up my user page

It seems when I try to use the {{Userboxtop}} (inserted userboxes) {{Userboxbottom}} templates to group my userboxes on the right of my user page, it takes the entire contents of my user page and forces it into the userbox grouping on the right and leaves the rest of the page as white space. Creating talk page parts

You know what would be nice? Something that displays *all* existing userboxen, with e.g. radiobuttons for those that take parametres (like the level of language skills) – of course, changing one of the radiobuttons would immediately be reflected in the box shown – and a checkbox for each (parametrised) box, plus a submit button, which will produce wiki markup that you can then paste into your user talk page. (Maybe add a checkbox for substitution, too.) Please don’t use ECMAscript that doesn’t work with old browsers though… ☺ mirabilos (talk) 20:34, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

If you scroll down to #Gallery, there’s a search box to the side. And no, there’s no Google Translate userbox, at least not one that’s listed here; but there is a userbox for translators at Wikipedia:Translation#Userbox. Guidelines for moving userboxes from subpage of the user who created it, to template-space

As I could infer, the useboxes (after creation by some user on their subpage) need to be moved to template-space begining with 'User'. All the text put on Wikipedia is open sourced and hence the does not belong to the creator per se. So I think that there should be no issues with the move, although the notification to the creator of the userbox indeed should be provided. But some users like User:Purplebackpack89 finds it objectionable as in context to my move of User:Purplebackpack89/userboxes/Height to Template:User height as per his discussion on Template talk:User height. But apart from this particular incident, I think that the guidelines needs to be defined more concretely based on consensus. Opinions invited. DiptanshuTalk 18:23, 15 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Due to the fact that there could be (an often are) multiple different style userboxes for a specific topic, userboxes should generally not be moved from userspace to template space. The community has spoken very clearly about this many times in the past and a little digging should produce enough of those conversations to be clear. Political userboxes

Is there a specific criteria somewhere which outlines when a userbox just causes trouble? This userbox causes me some concern, as this user is apparently calling the majority of climate scientists left-wing liars. This gets a bit divisive and is overly hateful the way I see it. How far is too far when it comes to a user specifically targeting a country? A user has been adding User:Heuh0/Userboxes/American terrorism to several userbox list pages, and I have to question to what extent these should be allowable (to be linked) in project (Wikipedia:) space. The reason is that this goes beyond science and social issues but goes so far as to make outstanding claims of terrorism on the part of the Unied States, and regardless of whether these should be allowable in general, again, should there be a limit to which userboxes may be linked in Wikipedia namespace? These kinds of userboxes can do nothing other than cause trouble the way I see it, but I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this issue. Thank you. Dustin (talk) 00:48, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

@Dustin, I personally also think the userbox about global warming is very silly in that it is denying what is accepted by most scientists worldwide and is sort of aiming to provoke, though I don't know if that warrants a removal as after all it is simply a different POV. As for the one on US terrorism, I do not see any problem with it. It specifically mentions the US as a "terrorist state" without making any mention of America as a nation, plus it does not use a provocative tone unlike the previous userbox. In fact, the word "terrorism" actually originates from the actions of a government. @Etamni, I think people from many countries around the world - especially in the Middle East - may view the US as a frequent perpetrator of state terrorism and I am inclined to agree. Just like Russia or China, the USA is a powerful neo-empire that constantly intervenes in other places, including starting affairs not only in poorer & politically unstable countries but in Europe also. This doesn't mean that the American people should be condemned for it (I dislike the US as a nation state, yet at the same time I know and like many Americans). Actually, if Americans condemned their government a lot more for ruining other countries militarily or economically then I'm sure many people around the world would be much happier. Noted. I'm not sure that citizens in the US are aware of any state terrorism instigated in modern times by the US government, but many of the government's actions might seem to be terrorism by those who live in certain parts of the world. Of course, sometimes actions of others are attributed to the US for propaganda reasons, and it is often difficult to determine who is responsible for what. Just FYI, but while I have a problem with the anti-U.S. userbox, I care more about the userbox denying global warming and calling everyone who acknowledges it left-wing liars, so that should be priority number one with the U.S. one as priority 2. Dustin (talk) 01:58, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Alternatively, the global warming userbox could be edited to simply state that the user does not believe in global warming; an edit for the other box would be more problematic, but certainly there must be a diplomatic way to express concern with US government actions, without trying to offend US citizens. I apologize for my absence, I have been away from wikipedia for a while. To weigh in, on a more general note, whether a party argues for the removal of user box because such usebrox has zero merit, or whether the user box offends said party is irrelevant. For example, I am personally offended when I see users proudly displaying "I am a neo-nazi" user boxes, but said person has every right to display such a user box, to oppose would be censorship and go against everything wikipedia stands for. In regards to merit, the example of climate change denial has already been brought up.

I am unsure if I am supposed to be giving reasons behind my user box, as detailed above, I shouldn't have to, but I will anyway, although hope to refrain in entering any long political discussion. To take the definition of terrorism from the US Department of Defense "The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, economic, religious, or ideological" - Numerous example can be given; Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, Republic of Congo, Chile, Western Sahara, Angola, East Timor, Salvador, El Salvador, Haiti, Libya, Panama, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan and others; perpetrated either by US forces, US-backed militias or dictators deliberately placed in power by the United States. Including categories

This guideline is explicit that "Userboxes should NOT automatically include categories." Yet for example template:Userbox includes a usercategory variable which automatically adds the user to the specified category. I have seen other userboxes achieve the same effect using <includeonly>[[Category:Some user category]]</includeonly>. Is the template flawed? Are other users ignoring the guideline, whether for good or bad? Or, does "automatically include categories" have a specific narrow meaning in this context? For example if the template should not automatically include userbox categories but may include user categories, that would make sense to me. Should the guideline read, "Userboxes should NOT automatically include the userbox categories."? I'd appreciate some clarification. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 09:30, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't know if this is a similar issue or not, but my user page is showing up in Category:Wikipedia-related user templates. This is possibly due to transcluding {{User iar}}, which uses non-standard markup. I put a noinclude tag around the category, but it doesn't appear to have done anything. There may be other userboxes with the same problem, based on a offhand glance of a few userboxes and categories.
