Flodo Span

Thanks. I've asked Bignole to look it over, and he says he'll do it later tonight, so no doubt I can expect some detailed criticism, lol. What do you think about the image in the appearances section? Do you think it has enough critical commentary to be fair use? That's something I'm cautious about, since a bunch of images were recently removed from Friday the 13th (franchise) for simply identifying the subject and not commenting on it.  Paul  730 21:15, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I agree with you, but I believe the problem with that is, is the image actually providing critical commentary on the discussion in the article, or it is just there to show that she's in the comic? Like, is it performing a purpose that we couldn't do simply with prose? Hmm, maybe I'm just ovethinking it. I'll certainly keep it in for the time being (and add fair use rationale for that page once I move my sandbox) and we'll see how it's received in reviews.  Paul  730 21:27, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Chris... meh. I prefer Leo. Or Cole. Or Coop. Or Jason. Charmed may not have the quality writing of Buffy, but give them their due, they know a hot guy when they see one. I showed Bignole this IGN feature about what spin-offs they'd like to see (with Miss Lehane/Mr Giles at #1 of course) and Green Arrow was #10. Speaking of spin-offs, is SJA any good? Oops, I forgot about that Jack lead, I was supposed to be helping you with it. :/ Sorry. Yeah, it looks like a big improvement on what's currently there, more emphasis on the character's impact rather than just the story. Maybe it's just me, but the sentence "Versatile, creating Jack allowed writers and directors to inject both comedy into Doctor Who and later sombre social commentary in Torchwood." read a little clunkily. Maybe reword that? Definintely move the lead over, though. Spin-offs can be fanboy heaven, but don't a lot of people look down on them? I don't hate DC, I have... a tongue-in-cheek fanboy rivalry with it, yeah that's it. :P I actually had a conversation with Bignole over whether Squirrel Girl could beat Superman in a fight (she totally could). I respect the DC Animated Universe - they have nice animation and I like that it's structured as a shared universe. I don't really love any of the Marvel cartoons. OMG, I love the GLA so much! And Squirrel Girl and Flatman are my favourite characters in it! Aw, they're so well-meaning and everybody just hates them so much. Not sure a spin-off would work that well though, the whole point of them is that they never get to save the world. The GLA: Disassembled mini series was so perfect because that was literally the only time they've ever saved the world. I don't know, that whole "No Future For You" story seemed very much like a backdoor pilot (is that the phrase?) for a spin-off... Faith and Giles basically teaming up as partners to do the dirty deeds Buffy could never do. Who knows, maybe Whedon's vision of Ripper has changed since the original Cracker premise? Angel went through a bunch of changes, it was originally meant to be full of junkies and hookers. I think a Faith/Giles spin-off would be brilliance, this story-arc has established such a strong connection between them. Didn't Joss say he was going to tie the comics into the Spike movie (i.e. before Spike was totally cancelled, thank goodness, because I don't want a Spike movie)? I think the comics might tie into Ripper in some way, they're all connected in a master plan. Twilight's mission to erase the world of magic sounds like Urkonn's history lesson in Fray. Apparently, there's more to come from Fray, I looked forward to it. I think it would make a great movie. Yes, I did hear about the terrible new JLA movie... even Bignole was slagging it off and he's usually pretty fair when it comes to movie critique. We're going to have three Superman actors at the one time...? Hmm, lets hope the Avengers fair better. Who knows, maybe unconvential casting will work for JLA... Daniel Craig anyone? Oh, Dollhouse... how many fucking Eliza Dushku shows will they insist on making before they give us what we want; Faith. No doubt Dollhouse will be excellent, but I do wish Joss would stick to the Buffyverse. It's what he's best at. She's worked her way up into the A-list as well. You seem far too smart to be like Butters. I love Butters... as much as I love Kenny, Butters is a better character. I hate how T&M have totally neglected Kenny as of late. He needs some life breathed into him, stat! Cartman is brilliant, I actually think I'm quite like him, which is worrying. I'm not as fat, but personalilty-wise the resemblence is disturbing. I found myself reminded of the episode Cartmanland today as I dodged the Christmas shoppers in town. Let's see, good Marvel females...
  • Sue Storm - started out as a housewife stereotype, later developed into an extremely powerful woman with metaphoric powers (the ignored female).
  • Emma Frost - the Cordelia of the X-Men, need I say more? Also quite a deep character, what with her survivors guilt over her dead students, and has a genuine relationship with Cyke.
  • Jean - Dark Phoenix kicks ass in both comics and the big screen. Say what you like about X3, but Famke Janssen was stunning in it.
  • Storm - great character, being handled fucking shit these last few years. Gotta respect a powerful black female teammleader who was created in the 70s though.
  • Rogue - another mishandled character, when Gambit when evil a few years ago, she blossomed, no longer held back by a stale relationship. Now one of the best X-Men, I hope she survives Messiah.
  • She-Hulk - flawless. Don't have a bad word to say about her.
  • Probably more I can't remember, the cast of Runaways being a great example.

I don't like how coy Marvel are about their gay characters... they hardly ever say the word "gay" out loud, it's usually just hinted at. I mean, it's not like I want them to walk about with it tattooed accross their forehead, but it feels like Marvel don't want to make it too obvious in case the parents get all huffy. Read this, it's horrible. Free speech and all that, but it still made me angry. I know they're not comics, but I think Willow and Tara were handled brilliantly. Issues about retconning/bisexuality/homosexuality aside, their relationship was just treated with such respect. Wiccan and Hulkling are great, it's nice to have a teenage gay couple who are just happy with each other. I hope they stick around, I'm worried the YA will fade away if they don't do something with them soon. I like Karolina, her relationship with Xavin is a bit dull though. Aren't her powers meant to resemble the LGBT flag? That's quite a cool little detail. I actually do like Northstar, but they don't really do anything interesting with him. He hovers around the edges of the X-Books, being pretty pointless. I think it's a little hypocritical that a team (the X-Men) who are meant to serve as a metaphor for outcasts don't even have a gay member. My hope is that Anole, who is a massive fan favourite character - he literally rose through the ranks from background character to teammember due to popularity alone - sticks around long enough to be remembered as an important member of X-Men. That's what's worrying about these new characters, they're so vulnerable, they could be killed off next week and hardly anyone would remember them. I think the Parents TV is a hilarious website, it's like they're martians or something. They think movies like Superman Returns and Spider-Man 3 are unsuitable for kids under 16 or something because they might get scared. LOL. And they hate Charmed because the characters show cleavage and talk about sex. They love Smallville what with it's family values and goody-two shoes hero, but don't approve of Superman Returns showing Lois as an unwed single mother. My (single) mum was raging when I told her that! Oh, when I read it I just think of "Blame Canada": "The laughter and fun must all be undone, we must blame them and cause a fuss before somebody thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!!!!" Ha ha. I guess Anole is kinda Spidey-like, the story where he gets his funky new arm isn't out in TPB yet so I havn't read it. I loved Hellion, I wanted him to go on and become an A-list X-Man! He got stabbed to death by Deathstryke in Messiah Complex. :'( "Fuck off, religion", that had me literally laughing out loud. You're an atheist? I thought you were a deiest (sp?) or something? See, I don't even know what that means because Catholics are so fucking one-minded they wouldn't teach us anything about other religions. I have no problem with teaching religion in school, but they should take an NPOV approach and teach us about all religions in a theoretical manner. In our school, we were actually sat down and told that hell, angels, Satan, Jesus, all that, were actually physically real and there was no debating that fact. It was fucking brainwashing. I was like, "I disagree", and they didn't like that. I spent most of my sixth year in RE arguing with the teacher. She was going on about how homosexuality was evil and we would go to hell etc etc, and I just refused to sit and take that. It's biogtry. LOL, my old RE teacher actually claims to have met the devil before. Apparently, he has a vendetta against her because she does God's work. It was actually kind of scary listening to her talking about her "experiences" because she obviously believes they were real. I consider myself agnostic; I accept the possibility that there might be some higher being out there, but I don't think it's some loving father figure that listens to our prayers. Yeah, I think that if there is a "God", it's more like a big cosmic entity who's basically indifferent to the insignificant lives of humans. Like the Phoenix force or something. ;) I don't like to consider myself atheist, because I think atheists can be just as arrogant as bible-bashers in some instances. No offense, I'm sure that doesn't include you. :P Even if there was a God, I think atheists are more likely to live in denial, whereas I hope I'm more open-minded than that. I'm not loving how far Shulkie is down that list. #25??? She's Marvel's best superherorine for crying out loud. They do sum her up well though - "That she has the sense to see those incredibly positive powers as a blessing makes her a rare treat in the Marvel universe." That's my girl. ;) Spider-Man at #1?? Bleh. Spidey needs an injection of life... did I hear Dan Slott might be writing him? That would do him wonders, Slott is born to write Spider-Man. Wolverine over Cyclops?? What has Woverine actually done lately? Cap and DD deserve their high place. Madrox did quite well for himself, he's such a good character. Emma is too far down... Storm should really be higher, but she hasn't done anything interesting in decades. The more I look at this list, the more bullshit I think it is... where the hell is Molly Hayes?!? Aw, poor Catwoman. Lol. Halloween Resurrection sucks! It's definitely not the worst Halloween, but do yourself a favour and watch H20 instead. I only really consider 1, 2, and H20 as canon. The rest can die a slow and painful death as far as I'm concerned. I mean, they're all entertaining, but the total lack of effort in the continuity department just gets on my nerves. Yeah, I don't like how Laurie died, I don't "count" it as canon in my head. As far as I'm concerned, it was Michael in that ambulance who got his head cut off. Lol, you didn't like Resurrection? I actually liked that the first time I saw it, I thought it was more fun than some of the other sequels, but the showdown between Busta Rhymes and Michael is cringeworthy. Halloween is brilliant, II is flawed but has a great third act, and H20 is the perfect resolution for Laurie's character and the series. For JLC to undermine that in Resurrection just hurts. Yeah, I'm a big Terminator fan. Well, a fan of the Cameron ones. I guess you're right about the alternate timelines, but I just hate the third film. It's a perfectly competent action movie, but doesn't have the heart or the originality of the the first two. It's basically just a crappy remake of the second one, which is pointless because T2 is perfect. As I said to Bignole, I wish they'd made T2 3-D: Battle Across Time into a movie; John and the T-800 travel into the future and infiltrate Skynet, fighting the T-1000000. As a basic concept, it's a helluva lot more imaginative than T3 and it had the original actors like Eddie Furlong and Robert Patrick. I think that would have made a brilliant trilogy. I think Sarah Connor Chronicles has potential so long as the actors are good and it doesn't get too SFX reliant. The trailer kicked ass. Not excited about the new movies at all, I think they'll just be empty SFX-laden blockbusters like T3. Thousands of T-800 endoskeletons battling it out and not a lot more. I'm not usually such a cynical fanboy, but hope I'm wrong. Is Halloween 2007 good? I've not actually seen it, surprisingly. I was really excited, but the negative reviews put me off a little. I heard they basically reduced Michael to the abused child of a stereotypical redneck family, and his whole origin was really OTT and unoriginal. Bignole liked it. Personally I'd rather have a remake than another sequel. Lol, why does everyone make such a big deal about the car thing? I think Erik's comment is different because he explicitly states that it is their intention to create an interpretation of "Jason", though copyrights prevent them from using his name. It's no biggy. I saw the episode you were referencing, but I don't remember what caused it. It was clear that they were referencing "Jason", but the problem is that they don't make him look like Jason beyond a generic hockey mask. Unlike shows like South Park and Robot Chicken that actually make him look just like the movies and call him by name. The lead looks good. I see you tidied up some of the grammar I mentioned earlier, it reads better now IMO. I was looking through the old FAC to see if there were any outstanding problems, but apart from somebody complaining about overlinking (i.e., linking words like protagonist and immortal, which I don't have a problem with) they seem to have been addressed. One superficial issue I have is the quote boxes... do you think you can merge one of the Characterisation quote boxes into the prose? It looks like 60% prose, 40% quote boxes, it's little cluttered. I'll go through it and see if there's any problems, but it looks ready for FA to me. One thing you might want to do is look through other FACs for fictional characters and see any relevant issues that were brought up in those articles, to try and fix them in advance. Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Pauline Fowler has some extensive criticism in it. I noticed somebody complaining on the Jack talk page that the article was too sexuality-oriented, I thought that was funny. "It's too gay!" Lol.  Paul  730 11:18, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

There's hardly any third-party sources to establish notability, it's all stuff from the DVDs and companion books, I'd like to add a little more to the characterization section from this source I have, it's just getting around to reading and implimenting it. Lol, no worries, I just thought it was funny of you to ask me that when I've literally written "I'm a big Terminator fan" on your talk page. ;) The first movie doesn't have a commentary, at least my copy doesn't, but 2 & 3 do. The DVDs have shitloads of special features, although they may be of more use to the film articles than the character pages. I'm sure we won't want for sources though, it is Terminator we're talking about after all. Pretty A-list franchise. Yeah, hasn't the SCC pilot been online for ages? I haven't seen it, but I've heard underwhelming reviews which I've chosen to ignore until I see it for myself. Oh, sorry, didn't know you had your own sandbox. :/ That's just a general Terminator sandbox so let's just use it for all the characters, and impliment sections as soon as we finish them rather than sit on them until the article is complete. Oh no, I just got off the phone with my friend gushing about how he has a new potential boyfriend, don't you start too! :P Lol, yes, I mentioned in passing to my grandparents something about my female friend, and they put one and ten together. So now whenever I see them, it's "how's your girlfriend, the Chinese girl?" (She's not even Chinese???) My mum thinks it's hilarious, because she knows I'm gay. The only reason I haven't told them is cos I know it would just upset them needlessly. Angel

What are you thinking of Angel: After the Fall? I've defended it against criticism but it's not as good as I'd hoped... the Gunn storyline is the only thing I'm really excited about at the moment. I was hoping Spike might inject some more life into it, but all we got was a pointless little fight between him and Angel, something it seems like we're going to get next month as well between Angel and Illyria. Is it just be or is there more sexual content that there usually is? Nina's molestation of random women, Spike's half-naked demon bimbos, the kinky tagline for next issue ("Time for a little discipline"??)... I'm no prude, but this doesn't seem very Angel. I can't help but wonder if Lynch is a bit of a perv, lol. I dunno, it's a solid book, but it's not blowing me away yet. I'm not gonna trash it like everybody else, though. Yeah, a lot of my badwill towards it comes from Buffy, which just blows me away every time, even when I'm not in the mood for it. What characterizations are off? Nina, obviously, but she was never a very good character anyway. I thought ol' Illyria seemed okay... she lost Wesley so she's lached onto Spike as her guide. She might call him her pet, but I think Leery has some co-dependancy issues. :P I think Gunn is dead on, his scene with George was my favourite so far. Yes, Betta George is great, it says a lot when you love a character who's appeared so infrequently. The whole series just confuses me... it's not as bad as people are saying, it's a good book. But it doesn't really deserve the devotion I give Buffy. I don't mind Urru's art as much as some people, but I think he's not as good at clarity as Jeanty and he draws terrible women. Gwen and Nina look crap, and nothing like Gwen and Nina, whereas Angel, Spike, and Connor look quite good. Yup, picked it up today (along with Tales of the Slayers/Vampires - Forbidden Planet FINALLY had them in stock, I nearly screamed in the shop, now have the complete Buffyverse canon, more or less). I was spoiled about the human Angel thing - that's what having the character page on your watchlist does for you. Still pretty interesting though, it was the best ish so far. I was confused by the time travel thing... explain? What was that second panel, Future Angel? And Baby Angel? WTF??? I like that Spike's apparent shallowness in #2 was a mislead, I was worried Lynch had totally ignored his arc in season 5. I've always been kind of "meh" when it came to Franco's art. He's perfectly adequate, the darkness fits the tone of the book, but he's just not as special as Jeanty. I get the painted covers, not the Jeanty covers, to match my painted Buffy covers, but like you I'm starting to wish I hadn't because the upcoming ones look crap. The new Buffy ones are quite good... is that Dracula coming into it? I hope they mention his appearance alongside Buffy and Xander in Tales, that was funny. What did you make of "Anywhere but Here"? I like the explantion for why Kennedy isn't a Scooby. Sounds funny, do you have a link? I didn't get that Loanshark gag you made, I do now. I like that Teeth is in A:AtF, gives a nice sense of continuity to the universe. Plus he's ridiculous, which is always fun. Lynch seems perfectly nice in interviews, I'm just not sure how I feel about AfF. We're not really into the meat of the story yet, are we, so it's hard to tell. I'm sure the overall plot will be good under Joss Whedon's tyrannical eye, but the individual issues aren't as memorable as Buffy. Rip-off?

They say that imitation is the biggest compliment fiction can get, so if there are similarities, I'd look at it as a big love letter to the Buffyverse. Nothing wrong with that. I know Davis is a Buffy fan, apparently "Love & Monsters" was inspired by "The Zeppo". I haven't noticed too much similarity between Jack and Angel, Jack has a way different personality... I guess they both fall into that ridiculously-macho-action-hero-with-swishy-coat stereotype. John just seems like your average foil, I'll pass more judgement when I see him in action. I've actually been in a total Whoniverse mood lately, I got the DW S3 DVD for xmas and I've been loving it. Martha is so much better than Rose, and Donna is even better. There's actually a deleted scene in Last of the Times Lords where they poke fun at Jack -

Jack: The 21st century is when everything changes... and you've gotta be ready!
Doctor: What does that even mean?
Jack: I dunno, it just sounds cool.

Torchwood is a bit too straight faced, considering how ridiculous it is. I liked the Dead Ringers sketch where Gwen was like "How the hell did we get on the roof?" and Jack said "The rift causes temporal anomalies resulting in massive plot holes that we just have to deal with." Lol, so true. And the idea of Saxon sending the team to the Himalayas is funny to me - how did they get there, the Torchwood jeep? Aw, I can't help but like it, no matter how shit it is. :P One thing that does annoy me though is Jack/Ianto. Sorry, but they have zero chemistry that I can see, it feels like they've been forced together like a square peg in a round hole (so to speak) to please the fangirls and it feels completely unnatural. I did like the Captain Jack Harkness episode, that was quite romantic and tragic, but Jack/Ianto... urgh. Their "stopwatch" scene at the end of "They Keep Killing Suzie" makes me cringe. I'm also worried that John is going to be a one-dimensional "Look fans, two hot guys kissing" gag with no real character, I hope I'm wrong. So what did you think of TW? I liked it, it's nice to see the characters operating as a proper team rather than the character-of-the-week set-up of the first season. They actually seem like a cool superhero team now rather than a group of incompetents. Hmm, I deliberately left ol' Captain John out of my little review because I was a bit confused by him. He was ridiculously over-the-top... it felt like they just copied season two Spike and timesed him by ten. Only without Spike's endearing romantic side. I feel like John could make a good long-term foil for Jack, foils are always fun (I'm still annoyed that John Simm's Master is dead). I hope they tell a decent story with John, it felt like they were trying too hard to establish him as very cool and sexy. As for being too gay... I read James Marsters saying somewhere that it basically bordered on porn, I think that's exaggerating slightly. It was a bit gratuitous, I preferred the senstitivity of Captain Jack Harkness (such a pussy, lol). Jack and Gwen... nah. I'd rather they flesh him and Ianto out more since they've already went down that road, and have Gwen stay with Rhys. A blonde? But Torchwood is all dark dark dark! Your criticism of it earlier is fair, but it's still fun. Oddly, my favourite character is Alan, Maria's dad, he just has this gormless nice-guy charm. And it's always great when the parents (be it Joyce, Aunt May, whoever) find out about what their superhero kids have been getting up to... I like Chrissy, Maria's mum, too, she's such a bitch. It would be funny to have a SJA/Torchwood crossover, and see how the TW team cope with a bunch of kids doing their job better then they do. Okay, you seriously just made me burst out laughing with that Tosh "SAY WHAT!?" joke. Fucking hilarious. That totally just highlights the difference between the two shows; on SJA an alien is a nice peaceful star poet, on TW it's a lesbian who wants to kill people. Yes, that would make a great sketch. It would be interesting to see Jack and Sarah Jane together, she'd no doubt be very unimpressed by his violent approach to things. It totally annoys me how Tosh and Jack have both met the Doctor but they don't know it. And shouldn't all of Torchwood 3 know who the Doctor is anyway? Even the security guards at Torchwood 1 did. Not all fans love comedy. "Love & Monsters" is one of the most controversial episode amongst fans, for it's lack of Doctor and silly storyline. I can totally see this ep going down the same, but who cares, I loved "L&M". How dare you call Donna and Jackie nuisancy, they're my favourite characters in the universe. Donna's final scene in "Runaway Bride" gives me shivers, she's so good. Also, I think it's a little unfair to class all non-companion females as wallpaper, I think Doctor Who has loads of brilliant minor characters. What about Yvonne Hartman, Harriet Jones (so annoyed at how she was written out, they should have given her a heroic death), Sally Sparrow, Lady Cassandra, Ursula Blake. I'd also include Tallulah from "Daleks in Manhatten" if it wasn't for that accent. Probably more that I've forgotten about. Oh, what about Martha's mum, Francine, I didn't know what to make of her. Oh come on, don't diss "Love & Monsters"! It's such a love-it-or-hate-it episode. I hate Peter Kay, but the Abzorbaloff is funny for some reason. I like that he doesn't have a name, that people just call him Abzorbaloff, and he's like "yes, I like that!" He's funny. The pavement thing... not my favourite part but the episode is gold. A great example of minor but highly likable characters, and tragedy undercutting the comedy... it's quite dark when you think about it. Those people died because the Doctor touched their lives, and they were curious. Plus it did a great job of expanding Jackie's character, and her loneliness. I will defend "L&M"! Wow, change the subject much? :P Hmm, I've thought about this quite a bit, actually. One of the reasons I don't read fan fiction is because it's too self-indulgent. It's usually about one character hooking up with another character, regardless of their actual sexuality and personality on the show, just because the fan thinks it would be hot. Torchwood feels like fan fiction. It's immature, it's indulgent, it ignores sensible characterisation for cheap thrills. It doesn't seem concerned with addressing bisexuality or portraying bisexual relationships, it's just about people shagging/kissing whoever's in front of them. I like the innocent flirting between the Doctor and Jack in DW, but TW is ridiculous. It also seems to imply a "everyone is bisexual" message I'm not sure I agree with. (My opinions on bisexuality have changed over the years, I used to believe in a "gay gene" and therefore didn't believe that bisexuality was legitimate. I've since come to believe that sexuality is based more on psychology than genetics, and is FAR more complicated than just gay/straight. Whatever, it's people's own business what they identify as.) Whatever my views on sexuality, it just isn't good writing to have Ianto grieving over his dead girlfriend one minute, then shagging Jack for no apparent reason the next. When Willow "turned" gay, it was a sensitively-handled story about her falling in love with someone she hadn't expected to fall in love with. It wasn't just "you're hot, I'll fuck you" like it is in Torchwood. I didn't like the poodle joke, it was funny but it disturbed me a little bit. Jack can flirt with sentient humanoid bugs all he likes, that's sci fi, but a poodle? That's a little creepy. One thing I do like is the Doctor's comment that, by the 51st century, sexuality is basically meaningless because society evolves past it's prejudices. Sure, they're using aliens as a metaphor, but it sounds positive to me. The portrayal of Shakespeare as bi, the various closeted gays in WWII, and the eldery gay couple in "Gridlock", are positive as well, suggesting homo/bisexuality have been and will be prevalent and normal throughout human history. I'm sure Russel T Davis' heart is in the right place, he just gets a bit indulgent and goes overboard in Torchwood.  Paul  730 00:58, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Oops, just followed that link to erasure, and saw "includes people who deny bisexuals exist". That used to be me, sorry. :/ I pretty much thought you either had the gay gene or you didn't, there weren't halfsies. Bisexuals were either simply open-minded, attention-seeking, or gays in denial. I hung around with a lot of people in school who claimed to be bisexual. You'd never hear them express attraction to or date the same sex, they just wanted to be bisexual for the street cred. A few years later, they would admit they weren't. It must be confusing to be bisexual, I always knew I was gay, accepted it at age 11/12, came out at 14/15. But as I experimented with my sexuality, I realised it was really complicated and everybody's sexuality is unique to them. I wouldn't hold up any of the Drawn Together bunch as positive bisexual icons (especially Hero). Willow identifies as lesbian, but I think she's about a 4 on the kinsey scale. She's definitely attracted to men, I'm not sure how sexual it is. I didn't like Marissa, or Samantha from SatC, they felt too much like ratings-boosters. Jamie Madrox is a brilliant character, his bisexuality is explored through his duplicates. He maintains that everyone is a little gay, but is largely relucant to explore that side of himself (he flirts with men and jokes about it though). Mystique could have been a bisexual icon (maybe not a positive one) if Marvel hadn't pussied out back in the 70s when Claremont wanted to make her Nightcrawler's father. Apparently the arc for DW series 4 was mentioned/hinted at in "Voyage of the Damned". I have no idea what it is, somebody on the article talk page suggested it was the Doctor being portrayed as a god-like entity ("LotTL"s floaty moment, "VotD"s Angel moment). I don't think that's it, good theory though. Joe Quesada... meh. I don't know whether "OMD" was a genuine attempt to keep Spider-Man timeless for the sake of future generations, or simply a selfish way of maintaining his own childhood memories of the old status quo. "BND" looks interesting, but the retcon was utterly horrific storytelling. I'd hate Joe Q less if he admitted his mistake and apologised for "OMD" instead of maintaining that the fanboys are a vocal minority. Like hell, I'm totally open-minded to new directions, loved Civil War, but I hate "OMD" and I don't even read 616 Spidey comics. Don't hate RTD at all, I think he can be a little indulgent at times, usually it works, sometimes it doesn't. He seems much less arrogant and more friendly than Joss Whedon, who I respect but don't really like as a person. I've never seen QAF though. Lmao! There's something endearingly naff about the Welshness of Torchwood. It tries to be all CSI with it's swooping shots of the city and power walks (gotta love a good power walk!) but it's in Cardiff, so it doesn't quite pull it off. I want to know where Torchwood 2 is! It's arguably the most successful of the lot, since a) It wasn't destroyed like Torchwood 1, b) It's not publicly known like Torchwood 3, and c) it can still be found unlike Torchwood 4. I take it you mean Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart? Sorry, my knowledge of classic Who is spotty at best. I look at it as I do Silver Age Marvel - with historical respect, but no interest in actually watching/reading the stories first hand. I've seen the film, it just wasn't the same as the modern stuff. And all we know about TW2 is that it's run by a "very strange man". It would be fun to have a Shaun of the Dead moment where TW3 meet their Scottish/Irish counterparts.  Paul  730 22:46, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
The only comic I'm really interested in the complete history of is X-Men (I'm actually working on it's publication history in my sandbox right now) but even then, I take Silver Age continuity with a very large pinch of salt. I think Marvel do too, books like X-Men: First Class take a lot of liberties with early continuity but noone cares because the old stories were mostly rubbish anyway. The 70s/80s Claremont run is gold, though. Storm was far better back then than she is now. Those are the only non-modern comics I own. Young Jack... just think, one day that little boy will be a giant head in a jar. Should be a good ep though, I loved that Sarah Jane origin ep.
As for the article, it depends how important/detailed his backstory is. Can we not just cover it in the season sections as it gets revealed? Angel has a lot of flashbacks but I haven't given him a backstory section in my (unfinished) sandbox.  Paul  730 23:06, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

I think Ood are hermaphrodites so I'm sure they're right up John's street. I love the Ood! Them and Chantho have to win a "More endearing aliens in the Whoniverse" award. I didn't know SJ was coming back, heard rumours but y'know. I imagine Jack's role will be pretty fleeting, kind of a "hi, bye" thing when Martha rejoins the Doctor. Jack never does much in DW, he's very much the companion and not the leading man, which I kind of like. I don't like it when breakout charaters get overused. *cough* Wolverine *cough* Spike *cough* I don't like how the Doctor treats Jack like shit, though, but I guess that's just their relationship. Mean Doctor! I heard rumours Billie hasn't yet shot a scene with David, leading people to wonder whether it's a proper reunion or merely a cameo. Smallville isn't built on the instant gratification that Mars is, it's built on development. It's not a show you can just pop on and know what's going on (short of the general idea of Clark Kent becoming Superman...even though most people think the show is Superman). I've caught episodes of Mars, but it doesn't have the dynamic that Smallville has. You cannot watch the trials and tribulations (sp) of two characters, and watch them go down such starkly contrasting paths as well on any other show. Everyone may know where Smallville will end, but watching them get there is what makes for great television. "Reckoning" (the 100th episode) is by far one of the best television episodes of any show I've ever seen. Plus, few shows can match the beautiful cinematography that Smallville creates. Even when they have bad episodes, they still look gorgeous on screen. I'll admit, it does have a lot of the "abs, boobs" craze that has plagued television dramas lately, but the show can at least say that the "abs and boobs" on screen have some talent. If you read the companion guides, Lionel's motives for being so "ambiguous" in his determined "side" is explained. It's basically him fighting himself a lot of the time. He tries to be good, but he often times reverts back to evil acts in order to accomplish the "good" things that he does. As for Kreuk, she can act, though there are plenty of episodes (and occassionally the majority of seasons) when she's shitty. Welling has grown surprisingly over the course of the show.
