It's been one high aiming month! The French WikiProject and related pages have been aiming high for Christmas - and have received an equal number of presents in return!
A new page has been setup (WikiProject France/Links) to provide an index of the Projects/Portals pages (as well as helping newbees). When creating any pages in the Project/Portal namespace, please add them to the index page. This page also give WP:FRANCE members a handy watchlist.
Actually the first two are already inline references, I just listed them separately because I thought they were interesting reading. The third was an external link to the NYPL, so I included all three as external links in a new section. That's enough work for today. It's good enough to avoid deletion, I hope, and as a stub class article. It's really notable, and there are reliable sources. And it will get better as we all work on it, as it does need work (but don't they/we all). — Becksguy (talk) 09:07, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
And it was your request that sparked my interest in doing the article, so awesome to you too. Thanks for the note. BTW, I assume that you did see that there is a current article on OutWeek. — Becksguy (talk) 02:01, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Templates, not sure how to answer your question. I have nothing to look at to see what the problem is/was.
Basically templates are ways of coding once and including that code in each article the templates is transcluded. The form being used here makes use of another template to formalise the layout of a navigation table for authors works. But then you probably know all that. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk)13:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. :) I don't watch tv now either (unless staying at someone else's house). It ran back in the late 70's - mid 80's. Aleta(Sing)20:07, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Aleta - I don't watch any TV these days except Heroes and Torchwood. Love Boat is archaic by contrast, but still quite campy :) Anyway - feel free to pitch in on the Newsletter if you want. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs)15:26, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi Zigzig20s! I added two pictures from a recent trip and deleted your request on the talk page. I may continue adding my own pics to articles, but would welcome some feedback first. Regards, gidonb (talk) 02:07, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
I'm offended by several of your recent actions. First, on Talk:Mabel Dodge Luhan I described exactly what I was thinking and why I'd removed the information. I also asked, right there, that if I was incorrect to please re-add the information. I do make mistakes, and I don't mind being corrected. Histrionics like "if we decide not to include books, then it will be extremely difficult to reference anything at all" do not help make a better encyclopedia.
Which brings me to your post on WT:LGBT. If you have a problem with a change I've made to an article, the article's talk page is the place to discuss it. If you still think I'm incorrect, feel free to bring it to *my* talk page. Making what borders on WP:ATTACKs on WT:LGBT does not help better any article.
You and I (until now) have had a pretty good working relationship. I would have thought you'd feel comfortable asking me why I did something directly rather than trying to make me feel bad by slamming me on the project board. -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs)21:40, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Hmph. <sniff>. <hair toss, eyelash batting> Sigh.
I suppose I might be persuaded to think about giving you a second chance.
Maybe.
=D
As I mentioned, I don't mind the reference - but my Google search implied there wasn't much there. If Faderman says Luhan's a lesbian (or bisexual) or however it's put, feel free to add the info back :) I won't stand in your way - I'll probably wave pom-poms! =D -- SatyrTN (talk / contribs)22:15, 15 January 2008 (UTC)
Hi, you recently created a page at Tommy, the Unsentimental which was a copy of A Night at Greenway Court. Next time, there is no need to copy the article. If you wish, you can redirect to the article by placing the syntax #REDIRECT [[A Night at Greenway Court]] in the article. I have taken the liberty of redirecting the article for you. Cheers! Redfarmer (talk) 11:26, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see what confused me. You had the wrong title in the header. I corrected it. Cheers and sorry for the confusion! Redfarmer (talk) 11:36, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Ms Julie is .. unavailable .. this month, so Isaac and Gopher have stepped in to put this newsletter thing together. We may not be as funny as you're used to, but if you'd like a free drink, come see me at the bar. That might help. Maybe. And no, there aren't any flashing lights or fancy pictures this month - I'm still recovering from a whopping hangover. Julie's recovering too, but that's a story I'll let her tell.
Two New Featured Articles (and...)
Emma Goldman was promoted to Featured status on 2007December 27. If you don't know Ms. Goldman, she was a Lithuanian anarchist. Aren't many of those around, really, so having one of our very own is special. She'll be dancing the Cha-Cha on the Promenade deck later tonight.
Ann Bannon was promoted to Featured status on 2007December 3. Faithful readers may remember Moni moaning that we didn't mention this promotion in the last newsletter. Happy now?
The marathon efforts of Dev920 against her astonishing abilities of procrastination continued this month, and she managed to update the Portal's main articles. Whether she will finally beat her procrastination pixies in submission and update the biographies remains to be seen, but Jeffpw has leapt to the rescue and taken it upon himself to do all our lovely news. Friends, lend us your goodwill and your eyeballs, and mosey on over to see all Jeff's hard work.
Also, back in October 2007, Allstarecho and Benjiboi worked diligently on the "WP:LGBT Random Quote" and "WP:LGBT Random Picture" sections of the portal. They added many new quotes and pictures but, and yes here's the cat's meow friends... you can now use these on your own user pages! To add the "WP:LGBT Random Quote" to your own userpage, use: {{Portal:LGBT/Quotes}} And to add the "WP:LGBT Random Picture" to your own userpage, use: {{Portal:LGBT/Pics}} If you'd like to see it in action, check out Allstarecho's userpage for both in action and Benjiboi's talk page for the Quotes in action!
The long, slow race toward FP status continues...
Bisexual Awareness Month
Folks in Utah are celebrating Bisexual Awareness Month. For our own wikicelebration, Alison suggests we try to bring Bisexuality at least up to good article status. Working on the Utah article would be encouraged, but do it stealthily - they don't like us to be *too* open.
A cunning plan
In a move sure to bring her fame and fortune at last, Dev920 (talk·contribs) has proposed that an FA buddying system be set up, to help nudge frightened tikes who also happen to write killer ass articles over that initial first FAC hurdle. Anyone interested in shepherding duties, or anyone interested in being made to lie beside still waters (handcuffs are optional), do drop Dev an RSVP so she can start battering those darned pixies...
Zigzig20s has mentioned a desire to work on .. desire. Specifically literature by and about LGBT desire. To facilitate "LGBT Literature" taskforce, there will be shuffleboard and lesbian fiction on the foredeck later in the afternoon. Signup if you're interested.

Agreed. I have removed the tag. But the best form of defense in this cases is to demonstrate or argue notability in the article itself. So if you can find and real world material on reception, awards etc and referencing please do add it. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk)09:10, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Regarding your question, the text I deleted was: "Mazarine Pingeot, former French President François Mitterrand's illegitimate daughter, is a lecturer at the University of Provence Aix-Marseille I." I have no doubt that Mme Pingeot is a graduate teaching fellow at the university, while she works on her doctorate. However, I am sure there are many distinguished faculty at the university, who are known for their contributions to scholarship and learning. To cite her as one of the principal people worthy of note, and essentially because of the "illegitimacy" of her birth to a former president, is to lose a sense of proportion, relevance, and appropriateness. I noticed that you have edited Anthony Hope. If you are still interested in that article, please have a look at the recent changes I have made. Any additions or clarifications would be most welcome. Thanks! BrainyBabe (talk) 18:59, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Project member Moni3 has been working on the article for Barbara Gittings and noted that the Lambda Literary Foundation used the lead paragraph from Wikipedia, skillfully and lovingly written by Moni3, verbatim in the Lambda Literary Pioneers calendar. Moni3 contacted the Lambda Literary Foundation to let them know, and to ask if we could get a little write-up in the next Lambda Book Report. There is a preliminary text you can find here. Feel free to add to it. It should be no longer than 1,000 words, and it needs to be submitted by March 15.

I think only you would be interested in this mini-essay: You asked me to tell you when I photographed small towns
I know you are interested in small towns. I recently went home to Colorado, and was invited to talk to my brother-in-laws high school seniors who he teaches, out in Calhan, Colorado. Some kids are very poor and even hunt for their food and lack running water; other kids are preparing to go to Duke University or the Art Institute of Chicago, if they can find the money. Rob, my sister's husband, is like nobody these kids have met. Handsome, smart, thoughtful, artistic and intellectual, he a true renaissance man: he was the Illinois state champion in football, a typical jock meathead who got a football scholarship for Arizona State University. Then he really got into writing and studying poetry, and worked part time at a gym where he met my sister. When I was at the University of Colorado at Boulder he and my sister both moved to Colorado for post-graduate work; my sister went to law school and he pursued his MFA at the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, a program at the only accredited Buddhist college in the US, Naropa Institute, co-founded by Allen Ginsberg. I met Ginsberg one summer and talked to him about NAMBLA while he peed (he asked me to follow him into the bathroom). I didn't know how important he was then, but I knew he was important enough that it was huge news that he was a proud member, and I asked him about it.
Walking the halls I was struck by how familiar that charged high school air felt. Look at the photo on the secondary education article. I was surprised how comfortable I felt with kids who epitomize God's country (and whose school IP was only used for vandalism, which was funny. Rob, who the kids respect immensely, is openly liberal and defiantly artistic. He told me he once argued passionately with his class after they said the biggest problems facing the country are illegal immigration and gay marriage. He actually told them it's astonishing they focus on what are perhaps the two issues that least affect their well-being. They were super friendly and fascinated at how things work on here. I had no ability to impress them with names: I was unable to conceal my shock that none of them had heard of Martin Scorsese. Rob later told me I was a huge hit, and that some of the kids who talked to me afterwards had been some of his most difficult to reach. Here are some of the pages:
Perhaps more background than you wanted, but I thought you'd like the backstory to the photos; if not, hopefully you skimmed. Write back on MySpace. --David Shankbone01:49, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: Neighbor Rosicky
I changed the link because the article exists as Neighbour Rosicky; nothing exists under the title Neighbor Rosicky. I'm not sure why, but every literature book and anthology in which I have referenced this story has spelled it according to British English. Maybe a move is necessary regarding the article; it's probably a good discussion to be made. Ashleyy osaurus (talk) 03:32, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Bieber
Although I am not particularly keen on getting involved in an edit war with you, be aware that you haven't justified what you have done with the Bieber article. I am likely to keep on removing that passage at intervals. It would become acceptable only if you were to specify by whom the Bieber study has been disavowed, a fact that readers of that article are entitled to know. Can't you be bothered supplying it? Skoojal (talk) 06:20, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Could you please explain your most recent edit to the Bieber article? I'm not sure what your rationale was. Also, thank you for not simply undoing all of my edits. Skoojal (talk) 06:03, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Huh?
Tasmania a problem? The Tasmania project is basically on hold with probably a minus amount of editors actually working on the project at any one time - there are many stubs that wouldnt pass general WP V, WPN and WP V standards if some malicious ed turned up, and you do that? wheres your agf? you live in iceland or something? Please do not repeat that unless there is some consistency - I hope you do the same for the african or argentinian projects as well perhaps - maybe the monty python project needs it as well ? SatuSuro23:58, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
No big deal in the end - my bad - just ignore me - one of the admins on tas project has corrected my response - no big deal - apologies if i seemed a little critical SatuSuro
But to do every bloody article - you may realise that some of those arts you have tagged it is literally an impossibility of getting a photo SatuSuro23:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
In 80 years some of the islands you have tagged may have had 10 photos take in in 1934 or something with no one else bothering - to do such a blanket tagging of the tasmania project is odd - i repeat my message from yesterday I hope you do the same for patagonia or africa or something otherwise it seems very irregular - we have very few editors even less mobile eds who even have photos - and frankly I thing you have wasted your time on at least half the tags SatuSuro00:09, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Apologies - I am not saying you did something 'wrong' its just the preponderence of geographically challenged eds do leave one thinking about some materials on wikipedia - however for your effort - thanks for doing it - even despite what I have said - cheers SatuSuro00:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Hello, members and friends of WP:LGBT! I'm not one to be writing newsletters, but I miss our cruise director, Miss Julie, and our project is drifting along with a few leaking plugs in the bottom of the boat. Hey, it happens. Every group we join goes through changes. If Wikipedia weren't so interesting it wouldn't also be so frustrating sometimes. And vice versa. More than one Wikiproject has tumbleweeds blowing through it, but this is one that can't afford to let that happen. Even if you pop in to the talk page of the project, you can let us know you're still around.
WP:LGBT's Role in HIV / AIDS articles
It wouldn't be a proper gay community without a li'l bit o' drama! That's right. If we aren't arguing about something, then we should be asking if we're still queer. Maybe that's for the best, since we know we're still kicking. Our most recent topic is how far the role of our project should go in dipping our toes into HIV/AIDS articles. The main AIDS article was delisted as a Featured Article last month, sadly. (Sending a swift kick to WP:Medicine.) A spirited discussion is available for your entertainment on the WP:LGBT talk page about just how much of HIV and AIDS should we take on. As ever, we'll take your opinions under advisement. We're going to have to, because it doesn't seem to have been settled.
Is Pride POV?
We have a pretty cool sidebar that identifies core LGBT articles. Its symbol is the iconic gay pride flag, much like other Wikiprojects have iconic symbols denoting the topic is a core subject in a series of articles. However, a question recently arose asking if the symbol itself is not neutral. Should a pride flag show up at the top of the article on Conversion therapy? How else would anyone know the article is about queer issues? Is there another symbol that is as widely recognized and that includes all our many splintered facets? At what point do we stop asking ourselves all these questions and just go have a mint julep on the verandah and stop caring?
For the love of all that is holy, no Kool Aid jokes. However, an editor involved in pioneering San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk's article has included a section about the late supervisor's support of Jim Jones and the People's Temple. While it may be accurate, there is a Request for Comment regarding how much emphasis the section places on Milk's support in light of his overall political influence on the city, and indeed the rest of the United States. Milk's article is a sad one in more ways than one. It lacks the detail and heart that honors its subject. Anyone want to do a barter with me? I'll bring Harvey Milk to featured status (give me a month or two so I can read stuff), if you do something of equal value to WP:LGBT?? Make me an offer...
Queer Studies is offensive!
The established branch of study known as Queer studies was brought up as an category for deletion because an editor was offended by the use of "queer" in the title. It was overwhelmingly rejected mostly by the usernames I see here on our Wikiproject page. (A clue that I know you are out there, hiding...biding your time...) So, I wish I could congratulate you, but now I'm all confused by my sympathy for the editor who was offended. So, if you're reading this, Moni has a short memory and can't remember your username. Don't be put off by our demonstrative pushiness. Join us. We can always use involved editors.
What can you do to help the project out? Be a wiki-fairy, on many levels. There are all kinds of articles that need help. Why, just this morning I removed those ugly wikify and cleanup tags from four articles at random. If you can put [[ ]] around stuff, you can clean up articles. There's a list of articles that need attention at the top of the WP:LGBT talk page. Or you can start with the Lambda Literary Awards, where the goddess of my altar received a pioneering award, and was "reduced to rubble" by Katherine V. Forrest's wonderful speech. The 20th ceremony of the Lambda Literary Awards, which celebrates LGBT literature, took place in West Hollywood on May 29th [1]. The page needs to be updated with the new winners, to be found on the official website [2].
Why on earth would someone want to delete material about homosexuality? 'Tis truly a mystery. But these embattled articles have some random evil gnomes removing information that places these folks under our queer umbrella. Help us keep an eye out for the deletions. Take a peek at the articles, familiarize yourselves with the info, and be handy with the undo function in the article history. If tempers flare, take it to the Hall monitors and let them sort it out. Best solution is to make sure your sources are immaculate.
This month's Wiki stars
This is what I get for opening my big fat mouth and suggesting the newsletter should be revived. Here I am writing it. So, to pat self on back (*cough*) Mulholland Dr. became a featured article in May. This is A Good Thing since it is my personal declaration that there is no such thing as lesbian porn. I don't care what Benjiboi says about the video collection at goodvibes. Instead, we have hot women who connect on a deep, personal, soul-touching level, so this film should qualify as some of the skankiest porn available for lesbians. Plus, it's completely confusing and surreal! D'you think Laura Harring would care that the article is featured? I don't think so either... (Call me, Laura!)
Compulsive hoarding of templates
Once I saw a harrowing episode of Animal Planet's Animal Cops where this guy had, like, 250 cats in his house and it freaked me right out. I'm drawing a parallel between 250 cats and, well...three, really, templates in articles involving LGBT issues. Can we stick to one, maybe? In the aforementioned Harvey Milk's article there's a core LGBT template, a link to the LGBT portal, and a sidebar for LGBT rights. Jiminy! You'd think we weren't the folk to set industrial grey carpeting and track lighting in vogue. An LGBT footer was designed to link to articles of interest that aren't the aforementioned core articles. What do you think, can we have either an LGBT template for core articles, a footer for LGBT articles that are high profile but not core, or an LGBT rights template? As ever, anything's up for discussion on the WP:LGBT talk page.
It's June, Pride month. Wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, get a designated driver, then go half-dressed in the streets find a girlfriend or boyfriend, or some homo who's standing there looking lonely and kiss 'em up real good. Remember, it all started 39 years ago when a bunch of drag queens just got fed the f*ck up by the cops raiding the bar and dragging them all out to the pokey again. Rock on, queens! Enjoy your celebrations. My town's is in October, and 200 people attend. I miss Denver.
It looks like we've picked up a lot of talent lately. We have no doubt you'll be making your indelible mark on LGBT knowledge as we know it, here at Wikipedia.
In the immortal words of Miss Julie, "May all your Wiki days be bright, and may your Love Boat never turn into a Poseidon."
We miss you, Miss Julie, as well as all the others who have graced our project and are on wiki-breaks or just got fed up with all the nuttiness and went to live their lives. Get your stupid houses built and hurry up and come back. --Moni3 (talk) 16:52, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi
I see you've been adding a 'ProjectFrance' banner to communes in the Pas-de-Calais
(and a photo request too)
I've been updating P-de-C communes and using the 'ProjectFrenchcommunes' banner :
{{WikiProject French communes|class=NA|importance=NA}}
Would you prefer me to add the communes one or would it be better to leave yours?
(or for you to use the other ?) Dickie (talk) 08:48, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Huh
Once again like tasmania - I m going to see my watch list again with your tag splatter through it - some of the articles again are technically unphotographble - expect to get a complain again - are you resident of london or something? it would make sense if a local who knows where the tag is nothing but absurd did it SatuSuro 23:56, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
I beg to differ - you were tagging islands that are unreachable in wilderness areas in tasmania - please do not try lakes under any circumstance in western australia most of them are dry - and some supposed hamlets - no such things exist in ausralia you should really leave it to locals work that out SatuSuro00:03, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

I think that it was you
who requested a photo from Picuris Pueblo. Most of the Pueblos around here require a camera permit of some sort to take pictures on the pueblo and they usually cost about $20. I have a checkered past posting pictures on wikipedia, many dozens of my pictures of sculpture have been declaired copyright violations and have been removed by other editors and myself. However, if you send me $20 I will get some pictures of the Pueblo or return your $$$$$. The "Ask and you shall receive" of the Bible also works as "Give and you shall receive." Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 23:51, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
It turns out that US Law does not include the right of panorama (or something) and every work of art created after 1923 (or so) is owned by the artist of heirs. A photo is a derivative work - the rights to which are NOT owned by the photographer. I've had several arguments about this and lost them all.
Most NM pueblos have felt (this is my explaination - others might put it differently) exploited by (mostly Anglo) artists for about 100 years now and the camera permit is one way that they have chosen to deal with it. One picture of mine that has managed to survive here is of the statue of Popé taken at the former San Juan Pueblo, now Okay Owinge (but probably spelled differently). That cost me $20, a $15 camera fee and $5 because they did not have change for my twenty. I not too long ago went to a dance a Picuris, but did not take pictures because i am broke and that was not a priority. Life is supposed to be interesting and pretty much always is. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 00:07, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Reqphoto Edits
Hi Zigzig20s! I had a look at your contributions and I noticed an awful lot of them are reqphoto tag additions. I wanted to ask why you do this (I'm rather new to wikipedia) and if it wouldn't be more efficient to program a bot for a similar task or propose a general wikipedia directive. Thanks for your help! P.S. Feel free to answer here as I have not yet created a wikipedia account (can't decide on the username :-)). 86.217.166.29 (talk) 11:53, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, it would be useful if a bot could check that all human settlements (cities, towns, villages, hamlets, neighbourhoods) have either a picture or a reqphoto. The same goes for rivers and so forth. I don't know how to create bots, though.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:19, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
I could try to create one if you want me to, but I'm still not sure of the usefulness of said bot given the work needed to create it. Could you elaborate a bit on why you're posting the reqphoto tags and why it's useful? Wouldn't just writing that "all articles should have photos" somewhere be more reasonable? (Again, sorry if my question displays my utter ignorance of Wikipedia but I'm just starting out :-)). 83.203.125.214 (User talk:83.203.125.214talk) 23:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Pictures of places are useful in terms of the philosophy of geography, which makes sense to me when I correlate that to hermeneutics. Reqphotos are useful because if all places in Nebraska are tagged, someone from there can go through the Nebraska list and add pictures for the places needed.Zigzig20s (talk) 07:57, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Interesting... However, I do not think this alone justifies the time required to do this, for the moment at least. Besides that, I strongly believe that the hermeneutic interpretation of pictures as a means of understanding the philosophy of geography is an exceedingly outdated one and has furthermore been appropriately debunked by Ewart et al. in a recent paper. As it stands, the argument seems somewhat lacking to me but I have to say that I find some parts of it to be very appealing, if not entirely clear. Could you perhaps expand on your thesis slightly so that I may be able to better grasp some of it subtleties? (Do bear in mind that I am in no way an expert in the field so please be patient with me :-D.) 83.203.125.214 (talk) 17:11, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
An unfortunate effect of a group less active than in the past is that our articles lose integrity. This one is at Good Article Review for that reason. The talk page is quite active as a result. You have the opportunity to help. This is the corest of our core articles, and it needs some attention because it gets a lot of controversial input from many sides. If you can spare any time to edit the article, please do what you can.
Soon after we were informed that Homosexuality is being scrutinized, we heard the same for one of our few Featured Articles. As a participant of the Featured Article process, I think this is actually a good thing. The standards for Featured Articles are getting higher with time. But as a member of this project, that means that a few of ours may be de-listed unless someone can swoop in and save them. This one has to do with the designation of homosexuality as a crime in Germany. Most of this article's sources are in German. If anyone has any particular skill in this area, please lend a hand!
I know you folks think I have much experience in a gay bathhouse, and I hate to disappoint you, but I actually do not. I seem like the sort of person who likes to stroll about in a towel. Shocking, no? It appears that Ashleyvh is single-handedly addressing all the problems with this article at its GA Review. While that's pretty impressive, it's also no doubt exhausting. Can anyone help out there?
In what I hope will counter the jolt of re-evaluating three Good or Featured Articles, José Sarria and Janet Jackson as gay icon passed as Good Articles, and Black Cat Bar (famous San Francisco oft-raided gay bar) is nominated, all by Otto4711. Rock on, man. You're a machine. Good luck with your nominations. What is it about women that make them gay icons? And are there lesbian icons that aren't lesbians? How about bisexual icons? Am I the only lesbian who reacts with soul-trembling fear at the sight of Angelina Jolie?
New WP:LGBT studies member Pinkkeith has done this cool thing. If you click on that link, you'll see all the articles, categories, templates, and miscellany up for deletion. They're usually there because they're not considered to be not notable. That can be a relative concept, and sometimes it has to be argued that topics pertaining to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues are notable.
It seems a recurring issue which articles to tag, and what to say about a topic that's tagged. Certainly, because an article falls under our scope doesn't necessarily make the person gay. Florida Governor Charlie Crist has been rumored to be gay in some newspaper accounts. Although we all know Fred Phelps is supergay, he won't admit it so instead he does the absolutely awfulest anti-gay things on the planet to deflect suspicion. NAMBLA, the red headed stepchild of the LGBT world, is tagged with an explanation we have yet to decide if we'll keep.
In the lurking I do around and about on Wiki, I've long been astounded at the forbearance Benjiboi has for the utterly insane. Perhaps not so much, since the message on Benji's talk page notes frequent absences due to homophobia and transphobia. But it takes some kind of ... something that I don't have to face the constant anti-gay POV Benji does.
Benjiboi is a a bit of a WikiFaerie, a WikiGnome and also a member of the Article Rescue Squadron in addition to being a LGBT project member. A few of Benjiboi's favorite links for making the wikiverse more fab are:
Becksguy didn’t start actively editing until May 2007. His most frequent tasks on Wiki include reverting vandalism to LGBT articles and creating new project-related articles. He comes from New York state, and to prove not all of us are teenagers (ha! I am so totally 15!) he's in his 60s and retired.
Becksguy considers his biggest triumph on Wikipedia so far was a DYK in December 2007 for the first-ever newspaper report on what became AIDS, in the New York Native. He's also helped save several project-related articles from deletion. His lowest moment here was getting involved in the discussion on a particular terrorism related article, thinking he could help calm the roiled waters on an extremely contentious subject with multiple edit wars and passionate editors.
Here at WP:LGBT, he creates and improves articles that present notable LGBT related subjects in a fair and balanced way, and tries to include more of the significant alternative sexuality related subjects without being an activist, and works to better source project-related articles.
On Wikipedia as a whole, he says, "I think we need to learn better what processes work for a massive collaborative project. Some of what worked well for a more informal small project doesn’t scale up well. Process is not as important when the participants know each other. We need to get more of the current members to be more active. If more members were energized, the project would be able to accomplish more. We should be, in effect, the smaller and included Wikipedia for LGBT related subjects. Overall, I wish we could focus more on content creation and improvement, and less on vandal fighting."
"A Supreme Court decision in 1958 reversed a 1956 ruling by a federal district court that U.S. postal authorities were correct in prohibiting the mailing of the Mattachine Society's ONE magazine. The lower court had ruled that ONE was not protected by the First Amendment because the magazine's contents 'may be vulgar, offensive, and indecent even though not regarded as such by a particular group ... because their own social or moral standards are far below those of the general community ... Social standards are fixed by and for the great majority and not by and for a hardened or weakened minority.'" - Michael Bronski in Pulp Friction, 2003

Zigzig20s, I have undone your edit to Conversion therapy; nothing is accomplished by adding links to articles that do not exist. Skoojal (talk) 11:43, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I have undone your edit again. I've given my reasons on my talk page, and I'll give them here too: editors who know how to create articles about these people do not need this encouragement, and people do not know how to do this should never been given such encouragement. In the absence of actual articles about Bergler at all, links to them confuse matters and potentially create trouble, so please don't keep reintroducing them. WikiProject Novels is currently holding a roll call, which we hope to have annually. Your username is listed on the members list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active within the project. If you still consider yourself an active WP:Novels editor, please add your name back to the Active Members list. Also feel free to join any of our task forces and take a look at the project's Job Centre to get involved!
The members list is currently under review so we have moved all past active member's name to a Incumbent List and are doing a Project Roll Call. If you still consider yourself an active WP:NOVELS editor, please add your name back to the Active Members List. You may also wish to add your name to any of our many Project Task Forces.
Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks ("writing as Ian Fleming"), has become Penguin Books fastest selling hardcover fiction title. It is the latest installment in the book series about British secret agent James Bond and was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of late Bond creator Ian Fleming's birthday on May 28, 1908.
Me Cheeta: the Autobiography, written by a ghostwriter, is the autobiography of Cheeta the Chimp who is listed in the Guinness World Records as the oldest recorded non-human primate at the age of 76. He has appeared in various movie roles which included twelve Tarzan movies and even battled addiction to alcohol and cigars. The book is not published until October 1, but judges for the 2008 Guardian First Book Award were sent a early version and were so impressed that they have included it on the 10-strong longlist.
Stephenie Meyer, who is listed by Time magazine as one of its 100 most influential people of 2008, has decided not to continue with writing her draft for Midnight Sun after 12 chapters of the unfinished manuscript were leaked on the internet.
Current debates
Categories for Discussion has a series of discussions about whether to categorize certain specific types of fictional characters: double agents, dictators, characters with eidetic memory, etc. Advice from any Novels project members would be valuable in assisting them.
WikiProject Media franchises aims to help editors with the coordination of articles within the thousands of media franchises which exist and has requested input from our members. They are currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in our Novel project, they would like to get opinions before implimenting any changes.
With the Newsletter being almost three months overdue, I have decided to take on the position of Editor to make sure it reaches you regularly on time each month. The Newsletter is meant to inspire and encourage our team of Editors and so my goal shall be to make it informative and interesting each issue.
We now have many positions vacant in our Project Team, so we are looking for members who have the time and interest to take on the various roles, details of which can be found at the Job Centre. Shortly a Coordinator nominations notice shall also be sent out to all members, which will commence the annual Coordinator selection process.
Next month's Newsletter will include a message from our Coordinator Maria, who will introduce herself and speak on our forthcoming elections for extra Coordinators.
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is Look Homeward, Angel. The next collaboration is due for selection on 14 September, 2008 so cast your vote.
Newsletter challenge
Our last newsletter's challenge The Pure Land was completed by our member Maclean25, who also provided us with tipline news for this newsletter.
The first person to start the article is mentioned in the next newsletter. This month's article is Leslie Ann Moore's first book in her fantasy 'Griffin's Daughter' trilogy, which was named by the Independent Book Publishers Association as the 2008 Ben Franklin Award winner for Best First Fiction, Griffin's Daughter. Note: This article was previously deleted due to lack of notability, but that now can be established since winning this award.

Hi, there was nothing in the article that made that clear, it certainly looked a little "bullet pointy". If these are clear sections that should be referenced, then do so. However it might be better to just embolden them rather than use them as "very" short sub-headings. All in all the article is very short and could do with much expansion. Particularly in out of universe content and referencing. Anyway thanks for your contributions. Collaborative editing is always a tricky business. Regards :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk)19:52, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I see you rpoint about the sections but the article should make that plain, and what I suggest about the way they are shown still stands. "Out of universe" is a way of saying that the perspective of wikipedia articles should be main "real world" not about the "universe" of the story from "within". So real world Reviews, critical comment, bestsellers listings, newspaper comment, scholarly analysis, writing background, publication history and so one i.e. real world material. Some won;t apply yet to this novel but some should. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk)21:37, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Sure...I'll have to do it around 19:00 on Sept 25, cause I'm tipsy and headed to bed...just give me the reason u think it should be deleted...just not notable? I'll take care of it at that time tomorrow :) Ctjf83Talk03:36, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Ya, I'm in Davenport, are you in Iowa too? and what do u mean by "I was sans the internet for a couple of month"? I'm off to bed now, so I'll respond tomorrow :) Ctjf83Talk03:48, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
LOL, are you gonna have me drive all over the state?? LOL, I'd prefer close cities. Also, do you still want me to nom that for deletion, looks like a few people oppose it on the talk page. Ctjf83Talk19:44, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Well there are 3 gay bars on the same street, and one in Rock Island, Illinois, (1 mile across the Mississippi River) so I'd say pretty friendly, the city has protected gays in jobs and such for like 5 years I think since 2003, even before the state of Iowa did it last year (with gender identity), the city also passed a resolution in June supporting the first gay pride picnic here, with 8 out of 10 Aldermen and the liberal mayor singing off on it. So it isn't like San Fran, but it is pretty friendly! :) Ctjf83Talk20:36, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
You're welcome. I added the Journal of Bisexuality article, complete with a sample cover, as well. Now if only they were more affordable for those without institutional access (and many libraries and departments don't have them either, actually). Evolauxia (talk) 04:36, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Nominations have now commenced for Coordinator Candidates for the Novels Project. Any member of the project may nominate themselves. Nominations close on October 27, so if you wish to run make sure you add your name before then. Details on the election process and the role of Coordinators can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Coordinators/October 2008. The voting and question phase of the election will open on October 28 and end November 28.
After the recent roll call, the Novels Project now has 74 active members.
15 positions still remain unfilled at the Job Centre, members who are interested are encouraged to apply.
Yllosubmarine (talk·contribs) has been a member of the Novels WikiProject for nearly two years, and a coordinator since May. Aside from her work outside the project (including four FAs and six GAs in various areas), she has been active in the Project's Assessment and Peer Review departments. She hopes to continue in these roles as well as help encourage more activity and community research within the Project. With the upcoming coordinator election, she hopes that others will volunteer to become more active in their roles as Project members so that we can continue to provide quality articles to the readers of this encyclopedia.
On the advice of Coordinator Maria, the newsletter is now only distributed to active listed members of the Novels Project. A new section has started with this issue called 'In Focus', which will feature various members and task forces each month.
Members are requested to post any news items to the Tip Line (found above) to make sure it reaches the next newsletter before closing date, which is always the last day of the preceding month. Any task force news should be added by the coordinator of that task force. Having news items helps inform members of what is happening at the various task forces and so can be a way of encouraging more membership and participation.
Editors are required to assist with the newsletter for Task Force News and Peer Reviews & Assessments News, which involves the gathering of news items from the main project and the various task forces. These positions may be applied for at the Job Centre.
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Steppenwolf (novel). The next collaboration is due for selection on 1 November, 2008 so cast your vote.
Hi! I note that you have an objection to my proposal to merge the tributaries of this river into one article. I would be interested to hear your reasoning, since I have given you mine Peter Shearan (talk) 06:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Valérie Lemercier
Thanks for the improvements you made to the article on Valérie Lemercier - like yourself, I have been meaning to create the article for a while! I'm going to dig out some references next, I'll see what I can find Thanks for your advice. Tpacw (talk) 23:20, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Please don't assume that your 'smell test' is100% reliable
In this edit, you removed any mention of it being illegal to die in Le Lavandou, France. In your edit summary, you called it a "preposterous claim" and the reference "bogus". It is true that the reference submitted did not meet WP:RS; it is also true that the material you removed contained no explanation of how such a "preposterous" situation had come about. But it took me less than a minute with Google to verify that yes, indeed, a 2000 bylaw made it illegal to die in Le Lavandou, and while the law itself was absurd, the reason for passing the law (i.e., to draw attention to a problem with cemetery space) was in fact quite logical.
Hello! While I wasn't signed in (and under the IP 138.16.72.11), I made some additions to this article, which you then moved to the "Literary significance and criticism" section. I believe that my additions belong in the lead of the article, for this reason: they cover several notable aspects of Oates's book, from its real-life inspiration to its critical reception to eventual adaptation into an opera. Aside from its critical reception, none of these facets of the novella belong under the heading "Literary significance and criticism", and none of the facets are detailed enough at this point to merit individual subsections. They're basically a summary of what is notable about Black Water, which (to me) would seem to make the lead an ideal location for them. May I move them back? I'll admit I don't know a lot about wpnovels guidelines; is there something I've missed? -Hobbesy3 (talk) 23:15, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
I looked at Wikipedia:Lead section, and you were right about the fact that my additions should not be in the lead unless they appear later on in the body of the article. However, I have a problem with the fact that the tiny lead does not "stand alone as a concise overview of the article" that "summarize[s] the most important points". (Wikipedia:Lead section) Can I change it to
Black Water is a 1992 novella by Joyce Carol Oates. The novella centers around a car accident involving a young female writer and a United States Senator, a story that has parallels with the 1969 Chappaquiddick incident. Black Water was nominated for several awards and has appeared on lists of Oates's best books. Oates adapted the novella into an opera in 1997.
and move the Opera information into a subsection on "Opera adaptation"?
I'm not sure about John Duffy; it seems unlikely that a bass guitarist would moonlight by writing Joyce Carol Oates operas, doesn't it? Should we hyperlink it to (the nonexistent) John Duffy (composer), or to the composer's site John Duffy? -Hobbesy3 (talk) 00:00, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
btw, my proposed lead is only three sentences long--far less than the "four paragraph" limit laid out in WP:Lead section and (hopefully) more helpful than confusing to a reader. -Hobbesy3 (talk) 00:04, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I disagree about not mentioning the opera adaptation; it seems to be pretty common practice to mention film/stage adaptations in the leads of book articles--as in the FAs on Candide, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Perhaps the awards sentence is too vague, but I think the Pulitzer nomination should be mentioned in the lead (it's such a prestigious award, a clear indicator of notability), and don't believe that the mention of "lists" could be rejected as advertising. It's cited by two print publication sources in the Lit. subsection, and it's only a statement on the book's popularity among Oates books--so it's not really much of an advertisement... -Hobbesy3 (talk) 00:17, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
The pages you're citing are much longer, that's why the leads are relatively long as well. I strongly disagree on the opera and list thing - you may mention the Pulitzer nomination, if it's referenced. You know, people are still going to read what you typed when it's in the literary significance section. It will simply make it more intelligible for a cursory reading. I appreaciate your input, but I have to disagree on a lengthy lead.Zigzig20s (talk) 00:24, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Whatever, I don't care enough to get a third opinion. It's frustrating that you act as if I have the burden of proof - as if I'm giving "input" to a decision you will ultimately make. (I've cited direct quotes from the Wikipedia:lead section page to back up my arguments; you've just written that you "disagree".) -Hobbesy3 (talk) 00:39, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey there
Why doesn't "Post-Modernist and a Founding Father of Modern Gay Literature" make sense? I'll have to look up my sources to cite it, but I think I remember that being applied to him, or maybe it was to the whole The Violet Quill club of writers, among others. Post-Stonewall gay literature really was different from before Stonewall. Although Postmodernism, or PoMo, is misapplied overly, and means different things to different people, I think. Regards — Becksguy (talk) 14:03, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Coordinators election voting and question time is now open. Project members should vote for any candidates they wish to support by November 28 at the Coordinator Elections. Yllosubmarine, aka Maria, has decided not to be reappointed, her work as sole Coordinator since the last elections in May is highly appreciated by all members of the project.
18 positions remain unfilled at the Job Centre. Members who are active project contributors are encouraged to apply even if they can only do a position for a short time.
– Position of editor for 'Task force news' is still available at the Job Centre.
Peer review and assessment news
Peer Reviews are still open for three articles – At Swim-Two-Birds, The Emberverse series & Flowers for Algernon. Feel free to submit any novel-related article that you are working on for review, and please consider stopping by and reviewing an article, as we need more reviewers for our articles!

Hi, I have been around this project for quite some time now. Bit of a hiatus earlier this year, but back now just contributing. The Novels WikiProject wasn't started by me but my interest in the subject initially attracted me to what was here. It has developed substantially in the last few years and now takes in all forms of Narrative Prose Fiction within its scope. We are about the content not the format of the prose so WP:Books differs a little in that an implied format is entailed; also they can also focus more clearly on non-fiction. WP:Literature are the "new boys on the block" and are a little more focused on the "quality" aspects of literature, and again they have less emphasis on pure fiction and the prose aspect. Our biggest problem is to maintain a certain focus of interest across such a broad subject area and we need workers who can develop task forces, teams for assessment, teams for peer review and so much more. "So much to do, so little time, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late" to misquote from Alice in Wonderland.
The featured listNarnian timeline has been nominated for removal. You can comment here. The Narnian timeline is a featured list, which means it has been identified as one of the best lists produced by the Wikipedia community.
As I shall be leaving Wikipedia, this will be my last newsletter. Any member who is interested in taking over the role of editor can sign up for the position at the Job Centre.
Over the last month I have been working on a portal for our project. So am happy to announce that the Novels Portal is now up and running.
Boylo: Thank you for getting this newsletter back on its feet and going again. No Boylo equals no Novels Portal...heck, without you, we wouldn't have had a newsletter for these past months...so, for all of the members of the Novels WikiProject, I want to thank you for the time and effort you have put into this project, and I wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors. Thanks, pal.
This month's Collaboration has been selected by popular vote and is : Novel. As this is our Project's premier article, all members are asked to assist. The next collaboration is due for selection on 21 November, 2008 so cast your vote.
Recently a new worklist had been created and quietly arrived, the Cleanup listing which gives a fairly comprehensive hit list of "novels" related articles that have been tagged for something or other.
Since then a new Article alerts listing has also been added of more topic and "urgent" items worthy of our attention.
