Fire fighter monuments and memorials

Hey, I feel a tad shell-shocked about the DYK process for the Mexican-American War memorials list-article, but with or without a DYK attempt, there is surely a need for a List of fire fighter monuments and memorials (or "List of firefighting monuments and memorials"?) , and I don't think there is one yet. I have been coming across a few while searching to build List of fire stations, e.g. Vigilant Fire Company Firemen's Monument, Washington Township, PA, NRHP-listed, and Firemen's Monument (Hoboken, New Jersey). There is a big one at the California capitol complex, I recall from an AFD i think, hmm, that was California Firefighters Memorial, ah, and here is corresponding Category:Firefighting memorials with 26 members, not including the Vigilant one yet, which I will fix. I bet we could find hundreds; I think these have to be about as common American Civil War memorials, just not controversial yet (why isn't there more commemoration of non-Irish-descent, non-male firefighters, etc? :) though there is coverage in Wikipedia of some African-American firefighting group in California). It would be interesting to see if their creation dates generally lined up with creation dates for Confederate memorials, perhaps as part of a general monument-building trend associated with economic prosperity or lack thereof, instead. (I do think racism, overt or subtle, was involvedin the Confederate memorials, but I also think some of the hype is missplaced, of course 50 years later lots of memorials would be getting built, like has happened after other wars.) Note fire victims memorials exist and should be included, I think, rather than excluded. Peshtigo Fire Cemetery covers only victims, a fraction of the 2,500 or so killed in 1871 fire, the worst in U.S. history. St. Maries 1910 Fire Memorial covers firefighters and victims of 1910 and 1912 fires. There was a 50th anniversary observance in 1960 there. Really I don't want to argue about other stuff, but 50 years later is a big deal and is natural for commemorations to happen then. Maybe category should be Category:Firefighter and fire victims memorials? I am not sure how to handle memorials for non-firefighter victims, and firefighter victims, and firefighters who where not themselves victims. --Doncram (talk) 17:34, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean because the scope would be too great, if it included every gravestone of every firefighter? Hmm, yes, the scope needs to be limited. I think in cemeteries nowadays that there are standard images one can include to be laser-cut or however into gravestones, including maybe a firefighter hat image, and there would be too many of those. But I would want to include the St. Maries 1910 Fire Memorial, because it is historical and about a big event and there are numerous graves there; the main monument is a simple stone with a simple plaque I think without any figurative sculpture. Could we define a scope limit somehow to include "significant" ones like that one? Could go with membership defined as having a wikipedia article, which would exclude all the single graves. --Doncram (talk) 16:23, 13 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The California Firefighters Memorial is a big wall with all the names of hundreds of firefighetrs, an image here. There are a few more items in Category:Firefighting memorials that wouldn't qualify, e.g. another 1910 or so pair of cobblestone memorials, if it must have figurative art.
But if your interest would be about the art, and wanted it to be a list-article with art history bent, and with review of the quality of art, etc., I guess that would just be different. Then scope should maybe be expanded to include paintings in museums and other depictions of firefighters. Portuguese often shorten the name by omitting everything in the middle. Also it is very common that Brazilian name just had given name + suffix, such as Juninho Pernambucano, his real name is Antônio Augusto Ribeiro Reis Júnior, Reis is the surname, jr is the suffix, Juninho is the nickname derived from Jr. Pernambucano is the suffix for POB. People used to call someone Bush Jr., does not means Jr is surname. The article Portuguese name used to explain what Neto and Filho , not sure why it was rewritten to the current state. Hi, thanks for creating William Ducker House, about an NRHP in Nebraska. But hey, could you please consider improving the reference? You so far accepted the assumed/default title "National Register of Historic Places Inventory/Nomination: William Ducker House", which was guessed by Elkman's NRHP infobox generator. But that doesn't seem to be the title of the document. It looks like a selected passage or set of pages out of a Willa Cather(sp?) thematic resources document. Could you possibly please try to get a proper title, and perhaps the author and date of the full doc?

I am thinking I oughta write an essay about what I think about NRHP articles, when they are "good enough" vs. not, partly to clarify my views vs. many past critics of myself. I am very positive about any positive contributions. But where to draw the line about what is positive, for me, is somewhere in whether the contribution is fully accurate as far as it goes. IMHO it doesn't have to go far, and definitely not as far as some others would want. I dunno about a reference like this, it is arguably "wrong", or perhaps not. Not as far as asserting some doc is an NRHP nom when it is a state/local doc, which i think bothered u sometime previously when i objected, but still. About a year to do the whole thing. I think that pretty much all of them were motivated by depression - either clinical or events induced, but that sort of detail can go in the notes section. I am not sure what you mean by a "cautionary note", you mean a "Don't try this at home" sort of thing? Or "seek professional help before proceeding" that sort of thing? U probably didn't know it was a race, but i was trying to bring Colorado over 50% articled before you did that for Nebraska. You won! Oh well. :( Nice work.

By the way, i try to guess at categories which may be relevant for my new articles, and sometimes those turn out to be bluelinks already and sometimes not, and sometimes lead to others refining them, or sometimes lead productively to creation of new categories. E.g. Category:Blacksmith shops recently, now with >100 members after i came across the need for it, with some recent new NRHP article. We could add a subsection about homophobic/lesbophobic/biphobic/transphobic workplace bullying in academia. For example, if homophobic professors harass/bully another professor because they are LGBTQ. I have only found these RS so far:

Hey, thank you for including me in the Barr and Mueller DYKs. And thanks for noticing numerous articles which I have created, by your "thanks" notices. It is nice to know that someone has read them, and that you appreciate some effort put in by me. Also, whether you intend it or not, it does tend to make me self-conscious in a good way, about whether the work I've done is satisfactory or not. Sometimes/often I am trying to get out articles to bring a county's NRHP overall coverage up, and honestly sometimes I can skimp a bit, and your noticing my article creation sometimes causes me to go back and look, and I end up developing a bit more. Other times I develop more upfront, and it is still nice to see that you noticed. :) By the way, I do also notice many of your new articles because they link to some NRHP template or whatever that I created long ago, but it is catch and miss in my watchlist so I don't see all that you do. I do hope you don't mind my suggestions sometimes; I am (and should have to be) open to suggestions you might ever make about articles that i have created. By the way I do also notice new articles created by scattered other new NRHP editors and I do try to sometimes thank them and/or give some tips or feedback. Hey, nice job with that article, and congrats on the DYK. I am particularly interested in its assertion that the building is High Victorian Gothic in style, which was included in your development of the article. I never heard of that, and it seems like a useful term. I encounter vague usage of "Victorian architecture" or "Late Victorian architecture" (which just redirects to Victorian) often, and sometimes i bet this more specific style would sometimes be applicable. Yikes. Well i did bring Nebraska over that, except for one county that has mostly address restricted sites for which I don't have material to start articles. Seems like a good/feasible type of push which can be done for other states, too. I'm sort of working on bringing Idaho over the 50 percent-in-each-county line now. Down to 12 counties between 40 and 49 percent. It would be great if you could develop James H. Nave, a new article for a Lewiston Idaho architect, for whom i didn't immediately find much bio information. I didn't try all the associated NRHP documents though. Nothing about that in NRHP docs for his works that have articles, but from a geneology database I find he is: James Homer Nave, buried in Normal Hill Cemetery, Lewiston, Idaho. Born 15 Aug 1864. Died 05 Oct 1949. There is indication that there exists a Find-a-grave listing for his gravesite, with a photo. Hope this is enough for you to find your way to an obituary? It's often hard for me to decide which way to go, about having combo articles about two or more architects who worked together, and/or separate articles. Thank you for developing the article. Another Idaho architect that has turned up is Boise architect William Stewart Campbell or W. S. Campbell, architect of NRHP-listed Turner Hotel in Mountain Home, Idaho. Some info about some of his works in Turner Hotel's NRHP doc. From quick internet searching, it seems his firm grew to become the modern-day CSHQA firm, about which there is a Wikipedia article which could use some help, while offhand here I agree with your preference and think the architect article should be separate. John Enboe House, 1419 Warm Springs Ave, Boise, is another work by Campbell & Wayland. It has a turret, which seems to be common in Campbell's works.
It seems more likely to me now that W.S. Campbell's first name is Walter rather than William. Idaho architecture project page about Idanha-Hotel is one of the sources for that view. There are matches for "W.S. Campbell" in Idaho on Newspapers.com but no obituary as far as I can tell. I've had the same problem with architects from LA. Perhaps he died in another state, or he had become a forgotten man by the time of his death--completely forgotten, nobody remembered him. Zigzig20s, it has been over a week, and you haven't finished submitting the nomination. Also, I have taken a look at the article, and while the expansion is more than sufficient, there are no source citations at all except those in the intro section. DYK rules are quite clear that each paragraph needs at least one source citation, and there are a lot of paragraphs. The author is referred to be his given name rather than his surname throughout (see MOS:SURNAME), which is another issue. Troy Resources Mine info

Hello, I'm working on articles related to Guyana (mostly economic stuff) and I wanted to make an article for one of their major gold mines which is owned by Troy Resources. It looks like you created it 5 years ago, but since you're active presently, I thought it wouldn't hurt to get your opinion!

I'm working on a draft about their mine in Guyana[[2]], but it's actually a good deal more common that the project is referred to as Troy's. Another mine in Guyana also redirects all info to the current mining company: Aurora gold mine.

On the other hand, if I add the info to the Troy article, I feel like it would be undue weight, since they have projects in other countries that might be of more relative importance to the company's history.

Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the
River was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!
