Warnings on User Talk Pages

I'm wondering what (if anything) should be done about Richardgush's user talk page? It's blatant advertising, the same content found at the Methvin entry (which I've proposed for deletion), but I don't know if we're supposed to propose user talk pages for deletion. Prod + CSD

Once an article has been prodded, I would prefer to let the five-day period run its course, unless the article is a copyvio or demonstrably false. In this case, the article is unlikely to survive prod, but there's always the chance that someone will improve the article to the point where it can be kept. To Move or Not to Move?

There is a band named Criteria with an entry at Criteria (band). There is no actual entry for Criteria, just a redirect to Criterion, which is a disambiguation page that includes (at the very bottom) a link to Criteria (band). What I'm wondering is: should Criteria (band) be moved to Criteria with an Otheruses template at the top linking to Criterion? Or should I leave well enough alone?   • I'm confident that most people who type criteria, are in fact looking for criterion. I wouldn't move "criteria (band)". Instead I'd put a notice on top of the article criterion saying: "Criteria redirects here. For the band, see Criteria (band)." - Mgm|(talk) 20:43, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi Wyatt, Thanks for your message on my talk page, I think your the first person thats actually thanked me for my edits lol! I added about ¾ of the content to the 1 Enoch page and only ever got moaned at go figure! Anyway have another look at the page because some of the text wasn't being displayed, my fault missing /'s. I want to know how Sgt. Coldy Bimore fits into the picture, strange that, sounds like some kind of gift?

Just as a side comment saw a message on your talk page about Enoch Root. Did you know that the encryption system in Cryptonomicon is designed by Bruce Scheiner Company Blog. If you go on his website it’s listed under Solitaire. Don't know if that info is on the book page or not but thought I would mention it. It all seems to be there now, it's difficult to tell with so much content. I created a copy of Solitaire in the Visual Basic and Visual Basic .Net programming languages a while back. As crypto goes its pretty simple well compared with Blowfish or Rinjael at any rate. Newbie Nick Beeson

Thank you for your kind remarks. I will try to sign my posts in the future.

I have a lot to learn.

I have been anonymously editing for six months, and finally decided to sign-up. Mostly because I did not want to post to the D&D discussion page without my name being present.

I edit a wide range of pages, with a huge emphasis on bio-medical pages. Bio-medical means biochemistry, and subcellular topics--DNA, RNA, proteins, and molecular machinery such as ribosomes.

An example of an edit that was not bio-medical: I was reading the Winchester Arms page, when I read a sentence that stated they were going to stop production of the 105 year old pump-action rifle. But I knew that was unlikely so I checked at their corporate web site. It said they were moving production off-shore but not stopping it. I then edited the page to state that with a reference to their own page.

I only reluctantly posted to the D&D discussion page, because I was not sure that was the correct forum. I hoped that no one would be too offended. I am not trying to accuse anyone of doing anything the least dishonest. I was just thinking that maybe I would get a response that would clear up the mystery for me. But it seems that hope was vain.

My memory is sharp and clear. Others I know share them. There was a game remarkably like D&D at Michigan State University in East Lansing Michigan in 1971. I remember thinking, "Darn we should have written it up and published it. Look at the money they are making." I always knew that public domain games may ethically and legitimately be written up and published. And I assumed that is what Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson did based on the tremendous similarity of their game to what I knew.

The mystery to me is why no one knows of this predecessor, beside a handful of people who remember it. From the Wikipedia page, and from your response I conclude that Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson were utterly unaware of it. Totally possible since I had (have) no idea where the game I remember came from or how widespread it was.

That is it. I am going to drop this. Maybe someday some one else will weigh in, but as time goes by that becomes less and less likely.

Criteria, etc.

Can you explain, for my benefit, how Criteria, their albums, their members, and any of the related Omaha-based indie bands are notable? I don't see any assertion whatsoever on those pages of meeting WP:MUSIC. What major label have they released albums on? What important indie label? I contend that NONE of the bands on Saddle Creek Records are notable, therefore the label is not notable. I see no charted records, no national or international tours, no media coverage proven in the articles. Reliable and reputable media doesn't mean obscure indie music Web sites. House of Leaves

Where you might not know Norse mythology, I know very little of House of Leaves :) (I've only just begun reading it). The statement, as it stands right now, is technically accurate, Odin sacrificed his eye, Tyr his hand and Heimdall his hearing. I couldn't say whether this is relevant since I haven't read the books or any articles analyzing it or anything. However, I leave that up to you nice people.

I should point out that while Tyr's sacrifice had nothing to do with Yggdrasil (there was this mean-ass wolf called Fenrir that was going to eat the everything unless they chained him up using beards of women and mountain-roots and stuff, and Tyr had to sacrifice his hand in order for the wolf to stand still long enough), both Heimdall and Odin's sacrifices are at least tangentially related to the world tree. There was this giant called Mimir who got his head chopped off (can't remember why...) and the head now rests and guards the Well of Wisdom (containing all the worlds knowledge). Odin had to gouge out his eye to drink from it and Heimdall had to lose his hearing (although that's a very obscure story, the Odin one is far more famous). This well lies at the roots of Yggdrasil. I suppose that you could say that in some archetypal/symbolic way he is sacrificing to Yggdrasil, but that is not how the story is usually told. Odin sacrificed his eye to the Well of Mimir, not to Yggdrasil.

I don't have a problem with how the sentence looks right now, I wouldn't be surprised at all if that is what the author was referring to. Probably the best solution would be to find some source for it, but since I don't really doubt that that was what he was referring to, I'm not gonna make a fuss about it :) Oskar 14:17, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Regarding "cultural references"

When reverting my edit in A People's History of the United States you wrote; "reverting; you can find "in popular culture" sections in many articles, and there is no guideline requiring their removal".

Well, in a sense you are right. But I won't dig in that easily :-) As a matter of fact, Wikipedia's manual of style *discourages* trivia sections like "In popular culture" (see Wikipedia:Avoid_trivia_sections_in_articles) This means that it's allowed, BUT it should be avoided.

How to handle it? Quoting Wikipedia:Handling_trivia, it says; "Trivia that can be integrated into a relevant discussion of a specific aspect of an encyclopedia subject should be integrated into that text if it exists. If no such text exists, but it would be relevant, it should be created. Trivia that cannot be integrated at all should be removed."

The trivia about Good Will Hunting and composer Dahlgren could be moved into the article itself. But if you can integrate the crufty, pointless Sopranos reference into A People's History of the United States; I'm gonna be impressed! :-)

My suggestion is; (1) remove the Sopranos reference, (2) reword and integrate the remaining trivia into the article and (3) remove the "In popular culture" heading.

I thank you for the warm welcome, however it has come to my attention (through personal viewing and information from other sources) that Wikipedia has advertised for numerous other things, examples being Modding Genesis, in the Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis wiki, and the links at the bottom of the RPG wiki, along with many other wiki topics.

As a respectful movement to all other related businesses and communities, I request that all sites not DIRECTLY contributing to the content on Wikipedia (including topics made in there) be removed.

Regarding Spam...

Well the question I have to ask you and the rest of the staff on Wikipedia is "Are there enough staff members who like the topics that Wikipedia maintains?". if you only watch what you're interested in, what becomes of the topics that none of the staff are interested in? Do they get filled with spam? And what of the topic that tend to set off arguments, if they happened to be guarded by a staff member who supports a certain side of the argument? On several occasions, it has been noted by me and my friends that in topics such as Jurassic Park, a side in a debate is being protected by a staff member, who tries to bolster the claims of his/her side, while ridiculing the supporters of the other side, the results of which have caused alot of comments on Wikipedia's inaccuracy and biased facts. As for the topic, apologies not needed, though the topic would suggest you were right, though not intended to look that way.

The thing I would like you to tell me, just to put my conscerns on the RPG topic in particular, to rest, would be the purposes of the numerous community links that seem to advertise them, though they seemingly have no hand whatsoever in the making of the page. What I had been doing was adding an up and coming (and increasingly popular, i might add) Text-RPG site to the list, as interests in it are expanding greatly, and are bringing in numerous members who at times want information. I WAS planning on making a topic for the site, but a previous attempt made by a friend of mine for one of the RPGs on the site which had drawn a great amount of attention online, to help explain what it was about, was deleted only a day or so after it had been made.

Just so that I dont feel I've been wronged here, I'd like to be given just the names of the community links and what they've done for the RPG Topic on your site, because I honestly feel that they are doing nothing but advertising there.

LCDs

Thanks for your msg re this discussion. I do take your point, but perhaps you misunderstood mine. My point was that LCDs appear to have some sort of diffusion filter on the front of each pixel. This is a real effect (you can clearly see it with the unaided eye, although it requires a magnifier to see better), but it isn't mentioned in the article. Therefore, the article needs to have a few lines added to explain what is going on. I would have edited the article myself, but I haven't the knowledge to give a definitive explanation.

Either (a), LCD manufacture includes an extra step of front-coating the LCD, to achieve better colour-mixing within each pixel, or (b) there is some reason why the human eye cannot see the subpixels. This is important to clarify, because it affects the fundamentals of subpixel antialiasing. RichardNeill 22:01, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Troublesome user

User:Scipo, who you are already familiar with, is up to his usual bad habits and is breaching WP:3RR on numerous article today. Is there something that can be done about him? I believe this editor may just be a meat/sock for User:Navnløs. Both seem to have the same agenda. Both are violating 3RR on all the same articles and both use similar wording in their edit summaries.(although, to his credit, Navnlos has not side-stepped WP:NPA but has gone beyond WP:CIVIL to some extent) Any assistance would be great as this editor(s) do not seem to want to follow policy or guidlelines in their contributions to Wikipedia. 142.166.250.117 16:06, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of the rule on not linking to discussion forums (that would certainly remove all of the other Community links - after all, what is an online community if not a place for discussion?) However, notwithstanding that, the links, including the one I posted, are (were) to the main part of the website which provides more than just discussion forums. The link I posted, for example, contains reviews, articles, details on conventions, latest releases, clubs, and shops. I hope that you can agree that is a worthwhile addition to the article. Most Great Name article

You contributed to an article Most Great Name. Someone recently reverted the article to its initial version while gutting it of all references, and then nominated it for deletion, breaking all assumptions of good faith in the process. Thought you should know Nur110 (talk) 08:17, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Please note that none of the procedures or protocals for nominating an article for deletion were observed here. The article was arbitrarily gutted of all content and then nominated for deletion. This violates NPOV and also does NOT follow assumption of good faith protocal. Given this the very reasons for its nomination are invalid. As such the tag should be removed. The parties should then come back and discuss the reasons, whys and wherefores for wishing to delete the article and then renominate if the issues are outstanding. MMORPG

I agree the title needs to be capitalized (which it is). But nothing I can find in policy suggests that the first instance of the title need be capitalized no matter what. For a single example, how about the page Loudspeaker which states: "A loudspeaker, speaker, or speaker system is an electromechanical transducer that converts an electrical signal to sound." If you could point to this supposed policy I would appreciate it, because in my years of experience on Wikipedia I have never encountered a requirement of the sort. Prods on games

you've just prodded a number of game articles--and prodded & then deprodded others. Checking the list at PRODSUM, I'm a little confused. What criteria are you using? DGG (talk) 18:11, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

I go by WP:NOTE in general, WP:WEB if it's a browser-based game. The reason for the deproddings was that I discovered after prodding several articles that they'd already been through the AfD process, therefore making them ineligible for prod. Specifically, the subject needs to meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria for businesses and all claims need to be referenced from reliable, third-party published sources. Any unsourced claims can be removed by any editor (such as myself) at any time. It is also the responsibility of the editor who adds material (such as yourself) to provide references. If you read your user talk page, you'll see that GraemeL created a Sandbox for you to work on the article. There is also a Welcome message on your page with links to a lot of different Wikipedia guidelines and policies. You don't have to read all of them, but I'd strongly suggest it. Your version of the Epiplex page was very spammy and had no references at all, which is why I originally marked it for deletion. Removal in Mankato, N. Mankato page

The link I posted was for a non-profit local forum. There is a link on the page for katoinfo.com which is a for profit site with advertising. I don't understand why a for profit business with ads can have a link yet a local forum serving the community, not for profit can not?

Almost certainly. Per Wikipedia:Notability, articles should have multiple references from reliable, third-party published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy and there should be text indicating what makes the subject notable and encyclopedic. I would strongly suggest looking for some higher-profile references and write a few paragraphs about the game itself. Edited. I'd like to have this article added by Friday. Also - how do I cite the number of players registered in-game, when the only way to count them is to look at the in-game rankings? The homepage states the number of "registered" accounts, but this is less than the actual number of players in-game. Thankfully - many other browser-games do not need very much referencing. There's really no way to cite in-game players unless it's mentioned by a reliable source. A high number of registered accounts can help towards proving notability but it doesn't necessarily mean anything.
As for the article you have, I'd try to bulk up and copyedit the Development section a little. You'll need a lead section explaining more about the game itself, too. The How to Play section isn't necessary, because it currently violates WP:EL (in this case, because it has links to forums) and WP:NOT (Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, or textbook). As for the formatting, I'd strongly suggest using the Infobox VG template (like on the World of Warcraft article) and filling in the blanks. I hope this helps! I read why links may be taken down and now I see why you might think i was trying to boost the sites page ranking. I wasn't so if you could please tell me how to make it so that the link doesn't effect page rank then that would be helpful. Also I won't post more than one link per page because I realize why that wouldn't be good... (two hours later) I read more guidelines on why you shouldn't post links just for spamming and the article should be directly related to the topic. The topics i posted them on were directly related. Links don't affect page rank at all, so there's nothing special to do.
According to our external links policy, links must directly apply to the page. In your case, the Unification Wars link did apply at Unification Wars (browser game) but a link was already there. It wouldn't apply at Real-time computing, for example, because any external links on that page would be about real-time computing itself, not about games that employ real-time computing. This goes for the rest of the links you added.
To create a new page, you can either go to Wikipedia:Requested articles, or read Wikipedia:Your first article and then create an account.

If you look at List of free massively multiplayer online games, you'll see that there are no external links, only internal links to established articles on Wikipedia. This is in line with discussions by established editors on the Talk page was well as Wikipedia policy regarding lists, external links, and yes, even neutral point of view. Dear Wyatt Riot, I am quite surprised by your allegations of spamming. All information given did match the reality and that is what is written in the Wiki guidelines. by removing contributions that are based on facts, you are violating these guidelines by manipulating action.

If names related to websites are mentioned, then it is because of the fact that they are the only information source for the community. I do not need any linkbacks from Wiki. My duty is to serve the community. If you consider the entry into Wiki with historical data as spam, I am wondering if you are knowing what you are doing. Anyway who are you? I can't find any information about you, your nationality or other related in the wiki. Otherearth Deletion

Hello Sir,

I am writing to you as I don't understand why you initiated the deletion of the Wikipedia article Otherearth(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otherearth). This article has only been created with the thought of letting people know more about the game. To understand what it will bring. It does not harm any other game or article on this site, nor is it functioning as an commercial. It has different resources even though they might not seem reliable from your point of view. But you should check the Sourceforge entry for example so there it says that the project is alive since dec 2007. So all information presented seems right and trustable. That's why I see no sense in the deletion of the article. The information presented is fast viewable, up to date and easy to understand. And as far as I know that's what Wikipedia tries to implement. "Wiki" is Hawaiian and means "fast". So as I understood the sense of Wikipedia is to give people the chance to quickly look up a word they heard and then understand in what context it is located. Maybe you have many arguments against my opinion, but that's exactly why I wrote you, to understand your point of view.

This article give many reasons whiches have really not the same correction solutions.

To answer your questions:
  • Articles should clearly state why their subject is important or significant. It may not be self-evident to all readers.
  • Subjects must be notable in order to warrant an article. Our general notability guidelines can be found at WP:NOTE. You can guidelines for more specific subjects at that page. You will probably want to read through all of WP:WEB, which specifically covers web content.
  • If you feel any of those games do not meet the notability requirements, feel free to let me know. You may put those articles through the deletion process yourself as well. I should mention that I watch both of those articles and I remove non-notable games regularly.
I don't mind your directness at all. I'm glad you're taking this opportunity to get more information about our policies here. I asked you to stop recreating the article because it could eventually lead to actions against you, such as being temporarily or permanently blocked.

What most editors do is create a temporary page in their User space (for instance, at User:Lascar33/Ondarun 2) and work on it there until it's finished. Seriously I don't understand... BI really start to think there is no way to get a page on wiki. I waited 6 months, Ondarun 2 got 25 000 registrations... If you are come from UK, I can understand, because there is no google indexation of Ondarun 2.... But search in US or in all the world, you'll see lot of article about Ondarun...
So, now ? I have to come back in 10 years ? Do bigpoint or other game pay to get their pages ? Why some games get directly their pages ? May I have to ask a writer to write Ondarun 2 article ?

Your response to RfC re h2g2

You responded to this RfC, which asked about "content hosted on the h2g2 blog site". That formulation of the RfC was misleading. The h2g2 site includes some self-published material, and I agree with your comments about the applicability of WP:SELFPUB to those portions. The current dispute, however, actually concerns one specific portion of the site, namely the Edited Guide. No content is published in the Edited Guide unless and until it's approved by a BBC staff editor.

If you go back to the RfC now, you'll see much more information about the Edited Guide, which is the point actually at issue. The role of paid, professional staff editors means that WP:SELFPUB is inapplicable. JamesMLane t c 05:26, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that, and I agree. One of the earlier discussions on Talk:Invisible Pink Unicorn revolved around some other self-pub sources, like archived usenet posts and such. I guess I got the idea that it was the same (or related) issue. Sorry about the confusion! A good place to start is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources. Especially when it comes to articles on subjects like video games, of course you're not going to find peer-reviewed journals and such, so WikiProject Video games has gone through a lot of magazines and websites looking for things like editorial oversight, accuracy and fact-checking, and so on. Now, in this case, 1up.com definitely makes the approved list of sources. Massively.com is essentially a blog with little to no editorial oversight, hence it's unacceptable unless the guest blogger happens to be a notable author. MMOHub is explicitly excluded, both because of its poor content and a history of spamming on Wikipedia. The others seemed to be from non-notable outlets or by non-notable authors. I hope this helps. Naming/content of Role-playing game

Hi, I see from your previous posts that you have an interest in the naming/content of Role-playing game. That article currently describes tabletop roleplaying games, with other forms of roleplaying such as video RPGs and LARP described as a variety of tabletop game. Based on the comments on the talk page, it seems that many users are surprised to find that the article Role-playing game is about tabletop role-playing games.

I have made a proposal that in order to meet the WP:NAME policy that article should describe all activities commonly described as role-playing games on an equal footing, and that a new article Tabletop role-playing game should be created to describe tabletop roleplaying games. Good catch on reverting the mention of Alan Turing as a character in the The Baroque Cycle. Regarding your revision of my edits, I'll allow that suggesting Avi Halaby's (sp) is a Moseh de la Cruz descendent is extrapolation. Regarding Solomon Kohan, please cite a reference for his status as travelling "incognito" or "anachronistic." Incognito is a specific tool/status used by travelling royals, but if he's not the 3rd king of Israel, then he's not incognito. If the SK character is immortal or extremely long-lived like Enoch Root (which he is, according to the text), then he is not technically anachronistic, he's just older than dirt. -best Gb

Requesting feedback on DarkSpace

Back in 2008 you gave suggestions for the article DarkSpace. Thanks for the link to WP:GAMECRUFT; it helped a lot! I have tried to follow the Video Game article guidelines and improve DarkSpace by copyediting and adding sources. It still needs some work. Why don't you think War of Legends is an MMO?

Hi

You've removed a number of entries I've made about War of Legends on the grounds of it 'not being an mmo'. I am curious as to why this is as I thought that it was clearly listed as an MMORTS, both on it's entry page and on the entries that you have been removing. If something hasn't been correctly marked up please could you tell me where the entry needs to be improved so that there will be no more problems with including it in the MMO articles. Because from what I've read, Jagex isn't calling it an MMO. Multiplayer, sure, but not massively multiplayer. How may players does it support simultaneously? That kind of information would be helpful in the article. Woodroar (talk) 20:12, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
I get where your coming from but what counts as 'massively' is very much a judgement call imo, the term itself being very loosely defined. 10 people? 100? 1000? Soldier Front

Yep, I've seen the article ending up as salted or CSD'd, but I do think it is notable, based on number of players and so on. We only need more references for it, plus the fact that there's that preserve information policy. Any thoughts on this? Blake Gripling (talk) 00:29, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

WP:PRESERVE itself says "[p]reserving information does not necessarily mean preserving articles themselves", especially when the topic is non-notable. Quite honestly, I don't believe the game meets WP:N. I haven't found any substantial references (using this as a guide), just junk reviews, press releases, and sites that do nothing but list games. That being said, WP:V is also an inclusion criteria on Wikipedia, so this article shouldn't even be here without any references. Woodroar (talk) 03:46, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Won't work on Windows 7; if you attempt on doing so, it'll be likely that your system will lock up, requiring a hard restart. The company behind it also turns a deaf ear on user complaints, AFAIK. Blake Gripling (talk) 13:31, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
