Willie Roche

Hi William, Willie Roche is my father. He played league of Ireland Football (soccer) from the age of 16 to the age of 38 and was recently inducted into the League of Ireland Hall of Fame.

He is a figure of significance in Irish Soccer and I felt that I should create a page for him to serve as a place to link to from other references to him.

List of PlayStation Now games

I see that you have tagged the article List of PlayStation Now games, and marked it as a copyright infringement of the IGN site (http://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/List_of_PlayStation_Now_Games). However, I don't agree with this. Just like similar articles such as List of downloadable PlayStation 3 network games and List of PlayStation Move games etc, this article contains a list of PlayStation Now games. Like this Wikipedia article, that IGN page just happens to have another (and more outdated) list for games compatible with PlayStation Now. Since both of them contain a list of PlayStation Now games, they of course contain some similarities. If you count the number of games, that IGN page contains 122 games, and the Wikipedia article contains 178 games, so the Wikipedia article was clearly not copied from it, not to mention that the Wikipedia article already contains much more information than that IGN page. In fact, all that are similar in both pages are just the names of games mentioned in both pages, but game names themselves are obviously not copyright materials. 500 edits to mainspace is a minimim but not an absolute qualification. In my opinion, William is any combination of 1) too inexperienced (just scraping 500 mainspace edits), 2) too young, and 3) too new to Wikipedia to be reviewing at AfC. I would rcommend he help the encyclopedia by constraining his maintenance work (because up to now that's all he appears to have joined the project for) by helping out at WP:CVU. By doing so he will rapidly gain an appreciation of what content is acceptable on Wikipedia and what isn't. Kudpung, now the Michael Palance article is being taken to AfD. William, can I recommend that you spend some time at AfD reading over what kinds of things are commonly deleted? Start with the oldest AfDs, so that you can read other people's arguments, perhaps. I always hate confusing new editors by accepting an article and then they go "Wait, now they want to delete it." Personally, I don't accept things unless they either a) don't have AFD risk or b) I would happily defend it at AFD. — kikichugirl speak up! 00:54, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Also, your edit at the Robert draft removed the AfC template completely so now it's an orphaned draft that no one will get to... Might I suggest avoid using the "marking as under review" altogether? Hello. I tagged the article because I cannot see what makes Alex so special that he deserves to have a Wikipedia article. Everyone can edit Wikipedia, but not everyone can have their article in Wikipedia. There are thousands of people with cancer, so you must state what makes him different and notable from other patients. Otherwise, your article is very good. Civil Air Patrol

Hello William2001! I see that you have identified yourself as a cadet in the CAP. As a cadet, do you by any chance have access to the CAP's e-services website? If so, I have a little project that could use your help. There are currently 47 articles about CAP wings (soon to be 52 articles) and they desperately are in need of someone to update the membership numbers. The most accurate numbers can be found in the e-services website, but only members have access to that. For a link to the articles, click on Civil Air Patrol and scroll to the bottom where you will find a template that links to every CAP-wing article. Hi William. Which project are you referring to? I made the change because it is not quite right to say that 45 years is the longest sentence, unless it is made clear that we are talking here about a determinate sentence of years. There are prisoners who have served longer (e.g. John Straffen), and it gives the reader the impression life sentences don't exist in the UK. So, I have reinstated my clarification. @Hc19321: Hello, Hc19321. I have reverted your edit not because of the list addition, but because you have irrationally added the letter "a" in the article multiple times. This turned the word "outer space" into "outer spaaaace." From my point of view, adding random letters is clear vandalism. However, if you were serious about your edit and think that the addition of the letter "a" was necessary, you can revert my edit with the reason as the edit summary. Your comment on my editing to a biography of Faisal Shahzad, and I wrote that the Pakistan army, Saudia Arabia Wahabi, China and Catholic Christian are against the liberals. This is my idea which I learned by living in these countries like Pakistan, China and also met Catholic Christians. It is the same as the dark age of Europe when fundamentalist (Catholic Christain vs Protestant) wants liberals to slient them and these fundamentalist keep ruling by keeping ignorant these people. That's probably true in this case, but sometimes spammers, those in SEO(search engine optimization) or promotional editors want their article to be reviewed quickly so it appears in Google and other search engines to help promote their business or whatever it is being promoted. 331dot (talk) 16:43, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Rosguill, thank you for your comments. I still believe that there is no way that Chamisul does not meet GNG as it is an extremely popular drink. It is like Coca Cola not having an article. However, I understand that the burden of proof is on me, and fortunately, there are dozens of sources in Korean. I will be adding them soon or later. Hello, William2001,

You know, putting two or three CSD tags on a page requesting deletion does not increase the chances that it will be seen and deleted. At different times during the day/night, a variety of admins go through the speedy deletion categories and having more than one tag doesn't increase its visibility in these deletion categories. Also, unless it is an attack page, there really isn't an urgency to delete any page immediately, particularly a draft article which readers won't come across. Liz Read! I thought that there was a centralized list in which admins go through and delete/skip. 2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello William2001,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 815 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

richard rudd page

hello William2001 I re-edited Richard Rudd page trying to follow your indications, even though there are things that I don't understand. First of all, when I go to the edit session, there is s flag/pop-up saying that I self declared a conflict of interest: what is that about? I never declared anything of the sort. I was asked by a friend to help in building this page, as a volunteer. I am a professional translator and editor (italian language), so my friend assumed I have some skills that can help. I kind of like Richard Rudd so I said yes, but I don't think I am in a conflict of interest here, 'cause I just like the guy, nothing more... Secondly. I toned down the article, highlighting what according to me can be of actual interest and notable. Personally, being a student and conosseur of the I-ching, I find his interpretation of the I-ching very valuable from many points of view. The guys is, before anything else, a great intellectual and knows a lot about many things in the realm of spiritual traditions. And there are a lot of people in the world requiring that kind of knowledge. Third thing: I put any external sources that I found, and I have no idea if they might be affiliated or not. The only possible affiliation I could figure is a mention of Rudd on Watkins website, whereas Watkins is also the publisher of one of Rudd's books. I ll cut out that one, but there is also the List of most spiritually influential people in 2019, which is also published by Watkins based on many criteria and it is not a list of Watkins authors. According to me it should be accepted. Rudd has been a Watkins author for years and made it to the list only this year. Many notable people, starting with the Pope are there... It should account for something... But this is just my opinion, of course...

Margajee, thanks for your message. If you simply like the subject and are not related in any way, then you are correct that there is no conflict of interest that should be declared. However, the more pressing problem is the fact that your article lacks reliable sources. You listed a lot of references that are website profiles, and unfortunately, profiles alone are usually not enough to establish notability. Also, I understand that he won an award, but the award website simply lists his name and does not provide any significant coverage. Pietz, thank you for your message, and Timbot4x4, welcome. The most important issue regarding the article is the principle that every article in Wikipedia must be notable. In other words, not every subject that exists on Earth can have an article, and articles usually must have significant coverage by reliable sources to be included. Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

I think the IP might be trying to move the article to a new title, but is unable to do so as an IP account; so, they created the draft thinking that the end result would be the same per Talk:Jewel of the Nile#I copied the pages exactly and added a disambiguation page. I'm not sure why WP:DAB would be needed in this case, but perhaps there's a reason. Moreover, since you seem to have declined the draft for not meeting WP:NALBUM, then maybe the actual article should be re-assessed accordingly since the content is but the article didn't pass through AfC when it was created back in 2007. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:51, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Declined article

I had hoped to become a wiki editor myself, and I am choosing software products that have been around for at least 20 years and have no mention here on Wikipedia. What exactly do you expect to see? The DDCLIENT client application article that you declined is about a program used by millions world wide etc.. To not include it in a global encyclopedia is kind of like book burning in my mind. I understand vetting companies looking to promote links etc.., but what about things used by millions of people and that are not included here? There are a few I had in mind DDCLIENT used by hundreds of thousands if not millions, MintDNS used by at least 100 CCTV/NVR manufactures and looks like maybe 10% of the worlds IP cameras. GNUDIP which is like MintDNS only GNU licensed etc..

I would just like to know if you expect fortune 500 or its a no go, before I waste my time. I plan three articles for the software I mentioned above to start, but if they will not be included I would prefer to know ahead of time.

Your draft lacks the significant coverage of the subject in independent, reliable sources that we require. Because the reviewers of drafts almost never know anything about the subject, we look for in-depth discussion of the subject in major sources like The New York Times. That the subject seems important to people like you means nothing to us. I wouldn't lose sleep over that. Instead, please take a look at our list of tasks where you could get started. Wikipedia has a significant learning curve and writing articles usually takes a lot of work that new editors aren't always prepared for. Because we want to keep you as a contributor long-term, it would help all involved if you could get started on our backlogs rather than attempt a new article. I see, and I am happy to help with any backlog. That said a software product used by millions of users may not have citable sources in the New York Times, but demand inclusion all the same. Keep the junk out, but define all that is common for sure. Am I wrong in this thinking? I guess I miss the point of Wikipedia. If a software title is mentioned in the news it may be worthy of an article, but its use in the real world by a million persons does not qualify? What about the other items I mentioned, I have worked for days on the MintDNS article and have found over 100 CCTV/NVR manufactures using the same, which constitutes maybe 10% of the worlds IP cameras using this software title. Does that warrant an inclusion, or it as you said because I am a new editor? Should I choose other topics? I fully understand keeping the junk out, but the ability to discern between trash and software titles that power our world should be any easy distinction to make. I am going to try again, but if I do provide say a thousand references will you even have a look, or am I rejected because I am new? I do need to know. Should I just edit articles for a while as you said? I have been compiling a list of things which are widely used but not mentioned here. Pookiemcdingding, I really appreciate the fact that you are trying to add content to Wikipedia. This website needs people just like you, and I understand that you may be confused or frustrated at the fact that an article about a seemingly notable topic is declined. However, not all topics are suitable for Wikipedia. If your topic is suitable, then it is the responsibility of the editors (you, me, and everyone else) to demonstrate its notability. You claim that this software is used by millions, but statements like this must be supported by reliable sources.
Also, we do not (or, at least, should not) automatically decline articles simply because they are created by a new editor. Although new editors are more likely to make mistakes, they often make great contributions to Wikipedia. If you add references to your draft, please submit it again, and either I or someone else will take a look at it eventually (the draft backlog is huge). I am going to help with some of the backlog, as suggested. I am committed to keep the junk out as well. After much research I thought I had identified some widely used software titles that had no mention on Wikipedia. I spent several days researching the subjects, but I will make sure I have a concrete article before submitting again etc.. That said during my research I saw more than a few articles that are nothing more than advertisements. Parts of Wikipedia have more in common with a link farm than an encyclopedia, just sayin. I think that wide spread real world usage should supplant a press release and mention on the New York Times. I know the DDCLIENT article was lacking, but in my research I found the same is behind the linksys brand routers DDNS options. That alone suggests most even yourself have likely has used the same, albeit behind the scenes. Because this is an encyclopedia, we require sources for content. If we had no sources, we couldn't have content. Therefore, something that no one has or heard of but that's been deeply written about can be included because we have sources upon which to base an article. Common, every-day items that we all use and no one remarks about would have too little source material from which to write an article. Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Last week, I started a draft article on Subject-Verb Agreement in English (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Subject-Verb_Agreement_in_English#Always_Plural) on finding no site completely explaining the topic. Today, it has been declined and someone has suggested to merge it with this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agreement_(linguistics). I did so but it looks sort of out-of-place here. As a member of Wikiproject English, what do you think about it?
