Churches in Brighton

Good work on the church pix, especially interior views of St Bartholomew's; I tried to get some 2 weeks ago when I was doing my New England Quarter photography, but it was closed and locked at that time. Renaming of articles

Hi Vox. I've noticed you often rename articles from "St. Xxxxx's Church" to "Church of Xxxxx", sometimes citing a "Naming policy". Could you point me to this naming policy as I can't find it? Thanks, A bit iffy 12:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Vox: I'm afraid I agree with A bit iffy that your changes seem a bit odd; I note your response to him that you recall an admin person told you this was the case, but I can't see it anywhere as policy, and in general Wikipedia adopts the local practice which, I would suggest, is "St. Xxxxx's Church", especially outside the U.S. If there is a policy, I suggest the opposite is true - see St. Mary's Church, St. Andrew's Church and St. Peter's Church for examples. I've just reverted your name changes for two churches in Nottingham, and now noticed this discussion; despite your excellent work on some articles (eg Brighton churches) I do think you've ridden rather roughshod over most people's naming approach! Surrey wikiproject

Hi, I saw your message on my Talk Page today about the Surrey Wikiproject, the page you linked to however is a new page, as the correct link should have been Wikipedia:WikiProject_Surrey. Also, why put up a "Surrey shield" image when the Surrey article itself already has a coat-of-arm image?

Hi, Richard. I am sorry I haven't replied earlier, have been very busy lately. My first stay in Surrey was at Godstone Green, Surrey, a very pretty village, and I was at a agricultural holiday camp there, all this was over fifty years ago. Yes, people did that in those days, stayed in a camp to earn pocket money while they were with like-minded young people, in its way quite a lively group and enjoyable. Have been in the Croydon and Wimbledon area ever since, not exactly Surrey these days, as you know. Yes, I love Surrey, until a couple of years ago used to go out with the East Surrey Ramblers, mostly in the Surrey area. Had to give it up for health reasons though. Churches of Brighton

Hi Vox,
I have constructed a new table of significant churches in Brighton, which (once it is a bit more complete) I intend to migrate into the Churches of Brighton article. The main purpose at this stage is to give us, and anybody else who wants to work on Brighton church articles, an idea of what needs to be done. Tire

Do not change "tire" to "tyre" on the titles of articles. Moving them is against Wiki policy

Please read all the guidelines contained in Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English that include the following:

Stay with established spelling.

Follow the dialect of the first contributor.

These articles have been in the American dialect for a long time, and there is no clear reason to change them. You should not change the spelling used in an article from one variant to another, and there is no compelling reason to do so. No, just use straight British English, except where company names demand the American spelling - these will have been registered as trademarks and should be respected as such. Charles Macpherson

Hello there. I'm not a frequent contributor to Wikipedia but I've added quite a few links to CPDL (or ChoralWiki). I noticed that you'd edited the article on St Paul's Cathedral and I wondered if you know anything more about Dr. Charles Macpherson, organist 1916-1927. I have been searching the web for any info on him but to no avail. I believe that he wrote an evening service (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) in A or C for 3 treble parts. England is a country

Thank you for your keen interest in this three month old user talk page issue. Why it matters, I'm not sure, but please refer to this page and to the definition of "country" to see that just because it is not a sovereign state doesn't automatically disqualified it from being called a country. However, I believe that you'll find the entire point moot because if you go back far enough into the debate as it relates to my interaction with young Patrick, you'll see that it stems from him wrongly assuming that I had asserted England's "country-ness", when in fact I had merely listed it among places I had visited. Hi Richard; I'll compose a fuller reply to your proposal tomorrow, time permitting, but in principle I would say a "qualified yes". I still think that there should be a separate BAH (sub-)project, as the scope of the Brighton and Hove sphere of articles is just too wide to cope with in any other way - just think of all the church articles we still have to do! :) - but I agree that it would make sense to have something dedicated to Sussex as well. I saw your recently-founded Wikiproject Surrey; something along those lines for Sussex would get my support, although I would still be happier to see some separation of the BAH project rather than full integration.

One thing I will say about Sussex articles generally is that the Crawley article needs serious attention. There is potentially so much to write about and refer to - really, its scope almost matches that of Brighton - and yet there is hardly anything there! I would like to dedicate some time to improving it, although I am trying to juggle Brighton stuff, spoken articles, my railway ticket articles and project, uploading images, contributing to WP:DYK and doing other fairly important things such as going to work (!). Maybe a Sussex WikiProject would help give that vague aim some structure...

Actually, this has turned into a full reply! Anyway, I'll watch out for what other people have said as well. (PS. I have taken a lot more photos of Brighton churches - not uploaded yet, though. Your lovely hometown...

Ha ha - I thought you might notice these two contributions!! I managed to achieve three things in one day with a journey up the Mole Valley Line on 17th March: once a month on a Saturday, I go up to Bromley to visit a fellow railway-ticket-collecting friend, to discuss latest developments, pick up his latest "spares" to look through at home, and so on, so I did that in the afternoon; I needed to buy a ticket from the self-service machine at Belmont, pretty much the only Southern station I needed one from for my collection since the new machines were rolled out in 2004/2005; and, perhaps most importantly, I needed to visit a number of stations to get pix for Wikipedia. It was a case of jumping off one train, rushing around doing the necessary and getting on the next, so I only spent 8 minutes at Leatherhead! I have been doing this sort of thing (mainly for tickets rather than photos) for the last 10 years or so, and I must have visited Leatherhead station about 20 times, but only once have I ventured into the town centre. I have been up Box Hill about 12 times, though (I've just noticed - no photo in that article!!!). Incidentally, you asked about my camera: it's quite an old, non-SLR digital model: a Nikon Coolpix E2500, probably about 4-5 years old now. My Dad passed it to me when he upgraded to this. I never used to do much photography until I went digital; now, I carry the camera with me at all times, even to and from work. Hassocks5489 12:16, 4 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The use of consensus doesn't apply when a clearcut violation of a Wikipedia policy occurs. Even should editors agree to overlook the "Do Not Use" guidelines spelled out in WP:EL, that doesn't make it permissible. You have used socks to evade 3RR to support a link to your own website, and in furtherance of your opinion as to what a user may or may not put on their user page. Neither of those things has anything to do with vandalism, and in any event use use of socks fatally undermines your argument, even were vandalism an issue. You are using socks to circumvent policy (the link to your website) and, I presume, to avoid scrutiny from other editors. Those are clearly against [Wikipedia:Sock puppetry|policy]. Per that policy, I see no legitimate uses of multiple accounts in your actions. I think you should reconsider your approach. --Tagishsimon (talk)

It clearly is a matter of opinion, since my opinion (and come to that Andy's) is not the same as yours or other editors. In this instance, the problem is with your inability to see that others might hold a different opinion to you, and that your opinion is not objective truth. And even if there were no other opinion than that the paragraph violated policy a) that does not amount to vandalism, so much as it amounts to a violation of policy and b) there is no excuse whatsoever for using sockpuppets to fight vandalism or policy breaches. I'm sure you were taught that two wrongs do not a right make. Stop analysing Andy's perceived errors and put some more thought into the possibility that you might be wrong. --Tagishsimon (talk)

Same for me; I have also taken the liberty of correcting Itsmejudith's username on the page (I think she inserted 5 tildes instead of 4, producing a timestamp instead of her username!). As you probably know by now, my specialities are church articles, transport stuff (especially rail) and photos, but I can turn my hand to most things, especially with the resources of Brighton library and history centre at my disposal (ha ha!). One big priority will be to improve the Crawley article beyond its current dismal state: this is a town of significant local importance and some national relevance, so a much better article is needed. Please read WP:NOT. Wikipedia is not repository of images. While inclusion of (free) images is highly encouraged, Wikipedia articles should not become mere galleries. Wikipedia is an enciclopedia, and as such images only accompany/illustrate text. Therefore, it's a common and encouraged practice that images that cannot be fit into an article are moved over to Commons. This way Wikipedia is still an encyclopedia and not an image depository, and no information is lost: it's merely just a click away. I hope you will understand this and will end the revert war on commons and will not revert my removal of huge gallery on Church of St. Mary & St. Nicholas, Leatherhead. It's this one. We used to hang out in the air chests. The larger one could easily seat 25 people for dinner, which I have heard was done once as a fundraiser, but that might be one of those urban legends. I wish I could have played it properly, but I'm not that sort of keyboard player. Still, I got quite a rush running through what little I know of Bach's Toccata and Fuge in D Minor on the thing. It's now MIDI capable as well! The Father Willis Organ is a good deal older and looks quite impressive. I'm glad these old instruments are still around. U2's new film, U23D, is due for 3D theatre release later this year. The Republican National Committee has taken the first step to endorsing Bono’s ONE initiative, with a potential donation of 30 billion dollars in U.S. taxes. Their most recent song is a cover of the John Lennon song, Instant Karma! for the album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign To Save Darfur. All proceeds go to Amnesty International. Church of St Wilfrid, Mobberley

I am interested in your comment about the origin of the organ at the Church of St Wilfrid, Mobberley. The info came from the church's website, and I suppose the church should know where their organ came from. It is not possible that some of the registers were taken, rather than the full organ (which I agree would be unlikely to fit into a parish church)? Could you check this out and make the appropriate comment in the article? In the meantime I have amended the text to put the reference where it belongs, ie. before your comment.

On another subject, where can I find the official line about the "standard" title for churches? I have searched and been unable to find it. Peter: Regarding the titles of articles on churches, I think Vox is wrong here, and indeed if there is a "standard" the opposite is true; under the common usage rule (see WP:NC(CN)), church article names should reflect local usage. I and others raised the issue in March (see above at Renaming of articles) in some detail, but without response so far. So please don't move any articles; indeed, unless Vox can persude us otherwise, I think his moves should be reversed, in this case to St Wilfrid's Church, Mobberley ! I, like you, await illumination. "I think there are arguments on both sides. I looked hard and long for guidance on naming churches when I started doing a series on Cheshire churches and found no guidance. So I followed Wikipedia:Naming conventions which says "Generally, article naming should prefer what the majority of English speakers would most easily recognize" and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) which says "Convention: Use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things." Most English people say "St xxxxx's church", rather than "Church of St xxxxx". The majority of titles of British church articles follow the former style, as do the vast majority of articles on US churches. There is no WikiProject on churches so I agree we should continue with the common format unless there is an authoritative convention on the other style." Peter I. Thanks for the message on my talk page. I do not think that "an admin once told me" adequately reflects consensus or that it is authoritative enough to form a policy for Wikipedia. What I have said above represents what I see as the current consensus. I therefore, with support from other editors, intend to continue to use the format "St xxxx's Church" and I will change back the titles of those in the Cheshire category. Vox and Peter: Thank you both for all this. Yes, I too am much more comfortable with a general style of ‘St Saint’s Church, Town’ for the article title, and I will embrace that approach (subject only, as you say, to us being alert to those more unusual dedications where local use has determined that the ‘Church of St …’ style is the more elegant title, e.g. Church of Our Lady Immaculate). Can I also make a plea for continuing active support for the relevant disambiguation pages; these pages are generally already entitled ‘St Saint’s Church’, as that is the prevalent style of the articles, but they should still include these different variants, as the whole point of disambiguation pages is to help people find what they want. Thanks for your reply. The reason why I queried it in the way I did was because of the way you worded your move: "moved Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Aston to Church of SS Peter & Paul, Aston: Naming convention". I was wondering what "naming convention" you had in mind, as this is a format I have not seen before on Wikipedia (although yes, I am aware of it IRL).

You are of course quite right that there IS no church-naming convention as such. But to the extent that I know the existing guidelines on naming in general - some of which are conveniently summarised further up this talk page - I think probably the original form of the title is more in keeping with them than the new one. For example, the use of "&" in an article title, when it is not an intrinsic typographical part of a proper name, would not be standard, and the abbreviation SS for Saints is not a Wikipedia norm AFAIK - which is of course not to say that the abbreviation is not used elsewhere. Birmingham Cathedrals

Before you rename any more articles in this way, PLEASE indicate clearly why you think this is the accepted naming convention. This will involve identifying a Wikipedia guideline and giving the link to it. In the meantime I have reverted St Philip's and am about to try to do St. Chad's. Please do not do anything more to them without a proper discussion. (BTW, it is also not acceptable to blank talk pages).

Thanks for your comments. To distinguish two cathedrals in one town by their denominations makes sense (I have done it myself with overseas cathedrals). But I think there are problems with the abbreviations "RC" and "CE" used in an article title. If this were the route to take, then "Birmingham Roman Catholic Cathedral" and "Birmingham Anglican Cathedral" would probably be better.

But looking at the other RC cathedrals in the UK, this isn't quite how they work. Where there is only one cathedral, Catholic or Anglican, it is always "X-town Cathedral". Where there are two, then the usual way seems to be to call the Anglican cathedral "X-town Cathedral" and the RC one whatever it is most commonly called - so (eg) Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral but St. George's Cathedral, Southwark. So on that basis perhaps whatis needed is "Birmingham Cathedral" and - whatever the RC cathedral in Birmingham is most often called. The article seems always to have been "St Chad's", so perhaps that is how it should stay.

As for "blanking the talk page" I said that because I noticed that on one or other of the Birmingham cathedral articles you had correctly opened a discussion but closed it far too early and then removed all trace of it from the talk page. HeartofaDog 11:45, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New Members The Album Zooropa was released on July 6, 1993. This album, along with Pop, is considered one of U2's most experimental. It was originally slated to be an EP, but expanded into an LP. It was recorded in between legs on the Zoo TV Tour. Zooropa features a rare lead singing performance by The Edge, on the song Numb. The names of three unfinished songs from the recording sessions -"Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", "If You Wear That Velvet Dress", and "Wake Up Dead Man"- appear superimposed on the cover; "Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me" was used in the Batman Forever soundtrack, and "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" and "Wake Up Dead Man" were included on 1997's "Pop". "Numb" was released in an unlikely format as the first "video single"; the "Numb" video is thought of as one of U2's best. "Some Days are Better Than Others" is the only track to have never been played live. The singles from Zooropa are "Numb", "Lemon", and "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)"

Having looked at this again there is a lot of overlap between the history and architecture sections. It may be better to combine them in chronological order & have sections covering: up to 1087, Middle ages, Modern (or similar) & (where possible) incorporate images from the gallery into the main article to illustrate the points being made. Greetings from Somerset, VH8'

I think the monastic tradition is one of the most important, distinctive, and interesting bits of Somerset heritage, so welcome aboard! I personally think it would be great to have a special page just on the monastic tradition here. I live in a village (Aller) that is right amidst the jigsaw mosaic of lands once owned by Muchelney Abbey, Bath Abbey (which you obviously already know about), Glastonbury Abbey, and Athelney Abbey. I think we're probably physically closest to Athelney, but the village church and adjacent tithe barn and refectory and the construction of the rhynes (drainage ditches) was done by the Muchelney monks. Just up the road from us is Othery, and that village was associated with Glastonbury. My husband learned that one of the first orders of Franciscan monks was located in Bridgwater (a few miles the other side of Othery from us), and that order was started quite soon after Francis died. I don't know that I believe all the Glastonbury myths about the young Jesus coming to Glastonbury Tor with Joseph of Arimathea as a lad, but the monastic tradition definitely goes a l o o o o o n g way back in Somerset. Per WP:MOS#Images,

Specifying the size of a thumbnail image is not necessary: without specifying a size, the width will be what readers have specified in their user preferences, with a default of 180px (which applies for the overwhelming majority of readers), and a maximum of 300px. However, the image subject or image properties may call for a specific image width to enhance the readability or layout of an article. Cases where a specific image width is appropriate include:

• images with extreme aspect ratios
• detailed maps, diagrams or charts
• images in which a small region is relevant, but cropping to that region would reduce the coherence of the image
• a lead image that captures the essence of the article (recommended not to be smaller than 300px, as this will make the image smaller for users who have set 300px in their user preferences).

I'm keeping fine- got my A level results (five As, politics was my lowest, with English and RS both satisfyingly high. Also got 100% on one of my history papers, which was a nice surprise. The other was general studies, which I obviously don't much care for...) and I'm doing the typical 'I have lots of time' thing- drinking and finding excuses to go out/have parties. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

I was out yesterday getting the last few pics for it, hence the sudden decision to move it from userspace where it has been languishing since last April. Yes, the church lists just sort of grew and grew...! You may have seen that I've done 6 of Sussex's 13 districts/boroughs now. The rest are on their way (eventually)... Eastbourne will be next, because it's the smallest (!). You probably spotted the proposed "List of RC churches in A&B" here as well...? Very early stages; I'm just playing about with the format and trying to add info where possible. Anyway, longer reply to come! And hi again! Thanks for the reminder message – as you probably guessed, real life overtook Wikipedia stuff and the bot that archives my talk page hid your message; sorry! Can't believe it's three weeks since I sent the above...?!?! Anyway, latest news from me Wikipedia-wise is that I have most recently been concentrating on Brighton and Hove stuff, as you may have seen; the church list and article writing you got me interested in mutated over time into an interest in listed buildings and architecture generally, hence my creation of various articles on those topics relating to the B&H area (actually, one is on Did You Know? as I write this). Then I started to cover Crawley, Mid Sussex, Worthing (where I work) and Adur districts/boroughs with church and listed building articles/lists. One thing I need to do w.r.t. Mid Sussex is write articles for all notable churches for List of places of worship in Mid Sussex; generally my criterion for this is listed = notable, otherwise do not write article, but some exceptions can be made. West Grinstead would certainly be a candidate to have an article written, as you say (even though it's not listed). This is a starting point architecture-wise. I'll add it to my "to-do" list (which is now frighteningly long). I will need it (and its picture ... summer would be a good time for a visit, perhaps?) for the proposed list of A&B churches I mentioned earlier as well, of course. Same for all the Surrey churches. I can't commit at this stage to doing any specific Surrey-related work beyond this, unfortunately, because of all the pending Sussex stuff I "need" to do first, but maybe in the future... I recently had a go at reinvigorating WP:WikiProject Brighton by tagging, grading etc. all relevant articles and doing some possible article templates; could try a similar thing for Surrey I suppose. As for church photos in A&B, I'll have to just pick off one or two here and there; it will be a slow process (by train and bus, and on foot if necessary). If you're ever on a wander in the vicinity of an A&B church, do take your camera with you! Anyway, this year may see some enforced slowdown on Wikipedia work (unfortunately: just when I have more and more to do) because I may be about to take on a larger role in one of my other hobbies, which if it comes about would result in my needing to research and write a major "piece" (ultimately for publication, which is nice). I will continue plugging away with new articles and photo sessions where possible though! I will now be away for the weekend in Scotland, but back on Tuesday to continue with more article-writing! Really questionable CSD nominations

I've gone through and undone a number of your speedy deletion nominations, as they completely missed the point. Your personal distaste for Brandy Norwood does not in any fashion justify labeling Brandy: Special Delivery as "nonsense." A7's expansion specifically notes that it does not apply to schools, so labeling Grant County Middle School with A7 is improper. " ...designs, builds, operates and own power plants all over the world..." is certainly a credible claim of importance, so SEPCO3 can't go under A7. 山东电力第三工程公司 gets over a million Google hits, including the home page of a site that supports most of the claims in the article. Francky perez is a French entertainer, and his article certainly claims importance.

"Speedy" is supposed to describe the deletion process, not the nomination process. Slow down, read the nominated article, read the CSD category carefully, and only place nominations on articles where it reasonably applies.—Kww(talk) 02:56, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Latest from me

Hello again! How do I manage it all ... good question – even my boss asks me! Haha... The secret is doing lots of preparation and research during "dead time", so I have everything ready to write an article quickly when I have time to do that. For example, I leave work at 5pm on Tuesdays and go to a pub quiz down in Hove ... but it doesn't start until much later in the evening. Fortunately, Hove library opens late on a Tuesday night – so there's an hour or more of research, taking out books etc. a week! Plus I can get quite a lot done on my daily commute, during lunch hours etc. This is how I can write an article so quickly (good example: Montpelier, Brighton, a huge recent article of mine, took less than 4 evenings of solid writing.) Also there is the motivation of knowing there are still so many more things to write articles on! Believe it or not, my "output" was actually quite significantly reduced for a few months because I was writing a lengthy "piece" for publication in real life, so to speak; I have recently finished it and the publishing process is now underway, so more chunks of time have become available. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to!
