Phoenicians and Cornwall

I'll have a look at that, though once one starts with Cornwall articles one could go on forever, as they're not wonderful.

By the way, I don't agree with your removal of my first square bracket. The convention is standard (Brackets [sometimes called square brackets] are used to enclose editorial interpolations, corrections, explanations, translations, or comments in quoted material: Chicago Manual of Style). Halliday doesn't start the quote till "are very fond of strangers…"; presumably the naming of Belerion appears earlier in Diodorus's account, which is why I used the square brackets.

I haven't got the Payton book, and so I don't know if someone has come up with undisputed Phoenician evidence since Halliday wrote his book (I live at Tintagel and haven't heard of such finds round here). I don't rule out that Phoenicians came here, along with the various other Mediterranean seafarers we know about; after all, Iberians are known to have colonised Cornwall and Ireland, and Cornish tomb-building styles can easily be traced back to the Mediterranean. But speculation is no good for a Wikipedia article; assertions have to be those made in reliable sources. As for saffron cakes, sheesh!

I don't think it matters too much whether Gweek is described as southwest, south or southeast, Kerrier - since the majority of readers will only have a vague idea where Cornwall is within the British Isles. Rather than placing it within an area, why not indicated how far (and in what general direction) from the major population areas - Falmouth and Helston - it is? For most people the Seal Sanctuary would be the most important aspect, not its location.LessHeard vanU 00:37, 4 November 2006 (UTC) g'night!

Actually, since removing the reference, I've been batting the whole issue around in my mind. I'm newly tempted to readd it, since they indeed aren't the only Fuel PR firm out there. Quaker Council for European Affairs

Right, if we are going to get picky- their website says that they did that. Let's take the metaphorical Joe Bloggs. He is recognised by the English government as an English citizen, and, due to the three protests he has attented, is (according to his blog site) 'instrumental' in banning fox hunting, preventing the local school being closed, and banning a logging firm from cutting down the local woods. Also, he was a 'majot player' in getting Labout into power. (Well, he voted for them, and persuaded his wife to do the same...) Now do you see why the policy is needed? You are, of course, welcome to debate said policy, but, until the policy is overruled, it is probably best to stick to it. Now, if the group is half as notable as the website makes out, it would be stupendously easy to find a couple of sources. If they were this instrumental in the various things they claim to be, surely the broadsheets of most of Europe will have featured stories on them at some point? Also, they will be pasted all over the web. Or, is the organisation just a group of Quakers who thought they would turn up at a couple of protests? (Two notes- first of all, I have full respect for the Quaker movement, it was formed locally to me, and I know a few Quakers, all of whom I have found to be wonderful people. Secondly, I have no doubt the group is notable, I am just playing the Devil's advocate and using extreme examples, in an attempt to improve the article, and the encyclopedia as a whole.) Well, I appreciate that it is the kind of information that is not readily available, but it would help the article a lot if you could source some of it. Looking at a few Google results, there DOES seem to be a lot of external coverage there, including (as you have mentioned) articles from the various EU websites. It would be good if you could throw a few of them in, just to try and prevent the article being biased, and proove that this isn't just a church action group. I would say that there was enough information on the Internet to make this a pretty good article. On another note, I have visited Swarthmoor Hall. As you no doubt gathered from my userpage, I only live a few miles away, and an interest in local history (as well as a philosophy club I attended, run in a Quaker church, coincidentially) drew me there twice. Yeah, if you haven't already, I would reccomend posting at the Quaker Wikiproject, and actively looking for help, rather than just hoping someone will. Looking at the article you asked me about, it looks pretty good. It reads well, and (something I hold very highly) it is well sourced. If you were asking me about the issue, rather than the article, then I am undecided. The major employer in my area is BAE Systems, which makes the subs, and so if the replacement was not made, a lot of jobs in my area would be lost. I think that there CAN (very rarely) be a case for war, but NEVER nuclear war, yet I see the need for a deterrent. I think I am leaning slightly towards it being the wrong thing to do. They're not changing your password; they're asking for a new password to be emailed to you (both it and your old password will work), presumably to annoy you. (There's a cap on such requests, so they should be cut down to a tolerable rate.) As for the chain letter, if people are using Wikipedia email inappropriately you may as well just ignore them (you might want to report that sort of thing at AN/I if it gets really bad).     • I think it's OK to mention the names, as Gavin has his own web site, on which they are mentioned (actually, he has several web sites!) Also it's standard practice on bio articles to mention children (but only briefly).
    • I think so, but I didn't mention it because I didn't know the date, or even the year (which would have been enough)
    • I don't know without looking at the book. I know I have a copy of it somewhere, but couldn't find it (spent several frustrating hours on Friday trying to find it, without success).
Worth mentioning that the family used to live here (tho' they went to a different meeting, so I didn't get to know them very well), and Martin was one of my "visitors" when I applied for membership.
Thanks for responding to my posting the "cleanup" tag, having more than one pair of hands makes the job a lot easier! I think we're getting close to the point where the tag can be removed.

Sorry, my misreading on the marriage bit! I don't need anything particular at the moment, but I thinjk the Williams family might be worthy of an article at some point - mining interests, Caerhays (though they didn't build it themselves), a ludicrously large number of azaleas and rhododendrons bear their name, and they have a history of "service" eg County Council, Justices etc. DuncanHill 23:06, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
