The ţinuturi

Hi. Thanks for the edits on the ţinuturi articles. Could I persuade to replace Axis powers with Hungary and a link to the Second Vienna Award, for those in Northern Transylvania? (The latter link could also be squeezed in somehow.) It's more accurate geographically and politically - technically, Romania was by then closer to the Axis than to the Allies. Also, Ţinutul Mării was actually part of an earlier a separate agreement with Bulgaria, with no Axis participation and at a time when Bulgaria and Romania were both in the same relationship with the Axis. It is the south (Southern Dobruja) that was lost then. I also think a rephrasing is in order for all the articles: if I got it right, *all* ţinuturi ceased to exist the Vienna thing, because the regime who supported them crumbled, leaving room for the more openly fascist and more revolutionary Iron Guard (the National Legionary State). They made sure to cast out all institutions of the earlier regime, but, granted, it took them a while. So it's not just the ones totally or partially lost that ceased to exist. Perhaps "was lost/was ceded" and "part of it was lost/was ceded"? Dahn (talk) 01:31, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

I must rethink my comment (I hadn't noticed you were doing it for all of them, not just for the ones lost totally or partially. But in any case, perhaps something more precise, linking to the other existing articles, is what's needed. No pressure though, it's fine for now - except for the ones in Bessarabia, which were lost earlier (Soviet occupation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina). Dahn (talk) 01:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Old copyvio

While looking over Theodore Durrant I noticed a paragraph that was copied almost word for word from the source cited. I dug through the history and found this edit by you that added the copyright violation text. This was from a couple of years back. I hope in the years since then you've learned that copying text from other websites is forbidden, and that citing a website is for crediting information which you still have to put into your own words, not an excuse to copy the actual text. Oh, OK, I can see where the error came in. Then I should probably track down the person who added the copyvio there that you unknowingly moved to the other article.
Sorry for assuming you made the copyright violation, but I don't know that there'd have been a way for me to see otherwise. In an ideal Wikipedia set up text moves would still be tagged to their original authors somehow, but I guess we're lucky the site can keep track of as much as it can as it is. I did leave a reference for the additional material. It was "A Digital History of Canadian Poetry" but, apparently, the site has changed since my 2006 posting. For some unexplained reason the material was deleted by "jbsimmons" in April of this year. The User name is in red so there's no way to cantact them. Yes, this is very relevant: this is concretely what Eugène-Étienne Taché wanted Quebecers to remember: both their legacy (the great men) and their future (the blank spots). The relevance was not clear as I read it. You could try again. Perhaps shorten your paragraph: the list of personages might be better in the article on the Parliament building. BTW, have you seen the Dictionary of Canadian Biography article on Taché? (DCB). I can't tell whether it contradicts or supports your material regarding the origins of "the second part". For some reason, I cannot access the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online at the moment. They must have a problem with their server. But I am sure there is nothing in his bio article on the second part of the motto as it was probably published before 1978.
I have restored the paragraph, but placed right after the paragraph where I mention his letter to Siméon Lesage. When I expanded the article in English Wikipedia in August 2008, I was relying mostly on Gaston Deschênes's article published in French in L'Encyclopédie de l'Agora in 2001. Since then, in 2009, he signed an English article on the same subject in History Wire. This new article appears to be a condensed, straight-to-the-point version of that written in French in 2001. Maybe it would be best to cite this one where it is relevant? -- Mathieugp (talk) 12:50, 17 October 2009 (UTC)
It certainly wouldn't hurt to cite Deschênes' 2001 article. The DCB article was written by Lucie K. Morisset and Luc Noppen who refer the reader to Deschênes' L’Hôtel du Parlement, témoin de notre histoire (1986). Their statement I'm confused by is this: "For the front wing of the legislative building, a new national emblem was officially approved on 9 Feb. 1883. It consisted of the province’s coat of arms emblazoned with an eloquent motto Taché had devised: Je me souviens. To this motto, Ernest Gagnon wished to add another that the architect had coined: “Born among the lilies, I grew up among the roses.” Verne Equinox (talk) 12:16, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
It's my turn to be confused... ;-) The article (as it stands) cites almost only Deschênes' 2001 article. But it's all in French, so I was suggesting to cite his own 2006 English abridged version when it is possible. But maybe you meant "to cite Deschênes' 2009 article"?
The sentence in the DBC article is confusing indeed. I am not sure what role Gagnon played in the plans for the use of the second motto. But it is clear that the other motto 1) existed (Née dans les lis, je grandis dans les roses/Born in the lilies, I grow in the roses) and 2) was meant for a monument that in the end was not built[1]. The monument was to be an allegory of the Canadian nation, a statue of a young gracious adolescent girl[2]. Deschênes quotes two sources to support this, Ernest Gagnon himself and David Ross McCord. -- Mathieugp (talk) 18:50, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
