George Grey

Although there is not yet an article about him, Sir George Grey was a prominent British Liberal politician of the mid-19th century, who served several times as Home Secretary (1846-1852,1855-1858,1861-1866), as Secretary of State for the Colonies (1854-1855), and twice as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1841,1859-1861). Having George Grey be about the New Zealand PM can lead to confusion, especially with links. Vardion, I'm happy to see you changed your vote on the first question. I'd agree that the question is not necessarily worded that well - much of my understanding comes of prior discussion of it, found in the archive. As to your current explanation for the second vote. Do you mean people not predominantly known by their peerage title? I recently attempted to make a table at U.S. Democratic Party presidential nomination, 2004 (superseding a previous one). The table itself has come out okay, but always seems to be put at the very end of the document when the page is viewed (it's supposed to appear part-way through). I've looked at the code several times, but I can't find out why this happens. Is there anyone knowledgable about such things who can tell me where I've messed up? copy images (including some of your famous maps) from "en:"
make improvements to, or even create, lists without much knowledge of grammar - the Ngata Dictionary is (as you may know) very helpful, giving several imitable phrases for many words.

But I'd hate to rush you and put you off. Any chance of, say, one small edit per week so as to add more variety to the http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Recentchanges if nothing else? I could give you a reminder (email?) if you were half-agreeable... (:-D

A map of tribal areas would be ideal to illustrate mi:iwi. I've written to the address given for the Confederation of United Tribes (which has a good map of that sort on its website) and await a response. The Reed Pocket Dictionary has one too, with fewer tribes shown. If we could get an outline that Wikipedians can modify, I'd be willing to add our own info if that's the only "free" option. Kia ora. Map Request New Zealand e-democracy

Hi, saw you in recent changes in NZ Politics pages and then discovered your maps. Any chance of doing new zealand electorates or council boundaries? not sure how this works, now I answer on your talk page? I would like both types of maps - ultimate wishlist is...

* map of NZ showing general electorate boundaries (this I have already )

* map of NZ showing Maori electorate boundaries

* map of NZ showing Maori and general electorate boundaries ???

* map of each electorate (basically just the shape, but also a bit of greyed out bounding electorates and coastline and sea)

* map of NZ showing city or district council boundaries

* map of NZ showing regional council boundaries

* map of NZ showing regional AND city or district council boundaries ???

The reason that the 'Maori and general electorates' and 'regional AND city or district council' ones are ??? is because I think it's maybe a bit too geek to think that showing how one is sub-divided is interesting. The key thing for me I guess are the maps of NZ with the single boundaries because then each electorate or council can be coloured to indicate their position (on any topic). Thanks for your reply, guess what I was going to leave a message here yesterday after I discovered the election results maps you put on the NZ elections pages. They are so much better than my girlfriend's electorate map. e.g. [2] yours manage to fit so much more into a small space with more clarity I reckon. I was going to ask where is the blank version, so that individual colouring-in can be done? BTW, do you know anything about auto colouring-in using a database? I'm actually thinking of a flash app.

With regards to single electorate maps, I think it is maybe a good idea to do single coloured in shrunk versions of the main all electorates maps - same ways as you did the where in the world versions of the countries - so this is fine.

I have got very large PNG files from elections.org.nz for each electorate (email the webmaster or I can burn a CD for you - actually I only have the Auckland ones) they have the boundaries and every single street/road in the electorate as a single thin line! (they are quite annoyinging large to deal with).

I don't know about you but I won't be interested in the council map ones until after the general election!

P.S. Can you do a new world map mini icon for the {{geo-stub}} template? It uses - yuck! the jpg compression artifacts make it unrecognisable!

Vardion, your blank world map is very cool and I was thinking it might work for a web project I am considering. I am wondering how the GFDL applies if I use the map in a web application, where the countries on the map get different colors based on data in my system. If I want to comply with the GFDL in that case, do I need to make the colored maps available for download, or does the software have to be GPL'd as well? feel free to use it however you want. In my sens, this means public domain (and that's what I'll write on the description page of fr:Image:LocationGreenland.png. Map licensing

Hello Vardion,

I (and other users of the German Wikipedia) have used some of your maps in the German country articles.

I noticed that there is no licensing statement on the image description page for the Japan location map: Image:JapanLocation.png. I assume it is GNU FDL, is this correct? Could you please state this in the description page or at least send me a message? It would help other Wikipedias a lot to reuse them, as for example in the German Wikipedia, people are much more critical about Image copyrights than here in en: - only GNU FDL and public domain is accepted.

At the moment, there is a general review of all images' licensing terms, and during this I found out there was no clear statement for the location maps.

If the license is not GNU FDL, please tell us this, too.

New Zealand Democratic Party

As far as I can see the New Zealand Democratic Party takes a position in the New Zealand political spectrum similar to progressive liberal parties elsewhere. Therefore I included it in the category Liberal parties. I added a simple explanation in the introduction. Gangulf 10:13, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Labeling New Zealand parties

Elections

I was the one who added the politics of New Zealand template to all the elections and the parties of New Zealand. Some people prefer this kind of templates over categories and I personally like to add this kind of templates to related articles. So for example, if one visits the page on the National Party, one can easily find links to related articles. I would like to restore this also in New Zealand. Bruce Beetham

Hi there! Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I have to confess I have no idea which name is correct. My soul source is my own memory - going back some 12 or 13 years now. I followed Bruce Beetham quite closely because he was my hero when I was younger, but I don't have any reliable sources to go on. I seem to remember hearing it called the New Zealand Coalition, but it may well have included the word Centre in its title as well. I wish I could answer your question!

Kyoto article move

Hello, I'm curious as to the reason for moving the article from Kyoto, Kyoto to Kyoto. The trend is toward getting all cities, towns and villages in Japan to a consistent naming convention of City, Prefecture (with redirects for famous cities like Kyoto) but your move is counter to that trend. Hi again, and thanks for explaining your reasoning. You do raise some good points. Especially, I agree that nobody calls it "Kyoto, Kyoto" --- that would be ridiculous! Except when it's needed, e.g. to distinguish it from Kyoto Prefecture. So, you'll find other city names that duplicate prefecture names listed with their names doubled: nearby Nara, Nara, Osaka, Osaka, and Wakayama, Wakayama, as well as Aomori, Aomori, Akita, Akita, Niigata, Niigata, Chiba, Chiba, Shizuoka, Shizuoka, Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Nagasaki, and Okinawa, Okinawa come to mind. The function is simply to distinguish the city from the prefecture.

By the way, since you have an interest in Japan, I'd like to invite you to check out Wikipedia:Japanese Wikipedians' notice board. It has lots of projects to work on, including collaborations, and it's got convenient links to relevant articles and discussions. Fg2 00:32, Nov 6, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. Map of Vietnamese Provinces

Hi,

By any chance might you be able to share the file you used to create the map on the Viet Nam page (Provinces of Vietnam)?

I work for a non-profit NGO that operates in Viet Nam, and we're trying to find a map with provinces in that I can use to show which ones we work in.

I'm trying to find a map file with which I'll be able to set all of the provinces we do not work in to be the same color, and then set the ones we do work in to be a different color (ie something with the text andor provinces in different layers), and the JPEG on Viet Nam page is obviously compressed to a single layer.

I'm pretty new to WikiPedia, so I'm not sure if these working files are available somewhere and I just haven't found them. If they are, might you be able to point me to them?
