Map language troubles

Hallo or Shalom, I work for the german language wikivoyage project and just have seen on Yuriks page, that you also have map language troubles, only the other way round. We lost the english language labelled map because it's not open source and I found myself with a plain hebrew language map in Tel Aviv when I opened the OSM map from the point-of-interest for one of the tel Aviv train stations last week when wee looked for the arts and crafts market - it is for us very difficult to get organized on a hebrew language only map, as you might feel with a latin letter map in Switzerland... Mboesch, I think it's the same issue. I'm not sure what you mean by an English language map that is not open source. Could you please clarify? As for the issue you mention: it is exactly the issue I described. So for instance the labels on a map of Athens would be unreadable for both of us (or alternatiely, pick a different example, localized by the table in Greek to me). A suggested work around (see the linked bug report) is to create a separate map whose labels default to English. The data still comes fom OpenStreetMap. Earlier, we had a separate privately financed mapserver running for Wikivoyage only, and we had the Mapquest-Maps there, with labels in English, they are not longer available for driect access from Wikivoyage as they are propietary and no direct access to the tiles anymore, but they had english language labels even for Greece (at least for the larger places) so both of us could understand. Now, the Israel maps are really a challenge for me (i can read some hebrew letters but to guess the missing vowels is quite challenging), and even more interesting are the findings when you look e.g. at Bethlechem, town label in arabic (so no one not familiar can unterstand) but roads in english... I hope, one day, there will be a possiblity to switch OSM to different language labels, the will be some people in the community helping to translate, I'm sure. Mboesch, In Israel proper the default language should be Hebrew. That is: the language for 'name' labels should be Hebrew. In many cases it isn't because it is from non-Hebrew data and thus you have English (or even in some cases: Arabic) labels. Same goes for the West Bank, only with a different order of languages. Thus whenever you see English in either places, it is generally a bug that needs fixing by the local team. English needs to move to 'name:en' labels. This is how OSM works.
If you want to set up your own map server, you can use OpenStreetMap data directly. The data is there. In the worst case you need to manipulate it a bit (override 'name' with 'name:en' where available, or whatever. I'm sure it could be done automatically). But maybe ask Yurik about it, if that is what you want to do. Or maybe check if you can assist them in setting an extra Wikimedia English only server (which is what they want to do. Introduction to contentious topics

I noted what I thought was clearly wrong but did not attempt to edit the article because I'm well aware that there's a difference between my common knowledge and other people's.
