Meetups coming up in DC!Hey! You are invited to two upcoming events in DC:
I hope to see you there! (Note: If you do not wish to receive talk page messages for DC meetups, you are welcome to remove your username from this page.) Harej (talk) 00:07, 16 January 2014 (UTC) War Revenue Act of 1898 for DYK?Hello, Tim1965. I thought I should let you know that the wikiarticle about the "War Revenue Act of 1898" has been nominated for use in the "Did you know..." (DYK) section on Wikipedia's MainPage. Thank you for your new addition to Wikipedia. You may want to keep an eye on the nomination in case reviewers at DYK have comments or questions regarding your edits. Thank you. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 01:00, 3 February 2014 (UTC) WikiProject Washington, D.C.Hi, my name is Monika and I'm working on a class assignment for my graduate class at American University, and I see that you are an active participant for WikiProject Washington, D.C. I would like to get some guidance from you on which articles have priority on editing. But more specifically which articles are lacking the multimedia element. Any help would be great. Thanks. OkMonika (talk) 17:04, 4 February 2014 (UTC) Coming up in February!Hello there! Our February WikiSalon is coming up on Sunday, February 23. Orlady (talk) 22:40, 10 February 2014 (UTC) DC Meetups in MarchHappy March! Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather. Wikimedia DC is looking forward to a spring full of cool and exciting activities. In March, we have coming up:
We hope to see you at our upcoming events! If you have any questions, feel free to ask on my talk page. — Harej (talk) 05:11, 3 March 2014 (UTC) Hi. I've given this an edit and will nominate for GA in a day or two. I was wondering if you still had the books or you could find the isbn number of the ones I've missed on world cat and fill out the remaining books of the bibliography with those cite templates? It's important for verification and for some of them I can only locate reprints. Great article BTW, we should be able to get up to GA, been along time coming.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:09, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
"Principal photography began on May 18, 1958". Was this in Jerusalem? It would be good to have some information about the sites where they filmed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:03, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
As I thought. So why then is that photo at the top of production some place in Palestine which says filming site? Can you try to fill out those books in the next day or two, it's currently at GAR :-] Also can you see if some of those NY Times sources have urls online? I know that the LA Times has some pre internet material scanned in online.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:13, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
On The Children's Hour it would be great if you could use Template:Sfn for citations. When you click on the page note it highlights the book in bibliography and you don't have to ref bunch. See one of my articles like The Great Ziegfeld or something for how it works. {sfn|author|year|page number} and then ref=harv in the books in bibliography. Let me know when you think you've expanded that article and I'll try to add to it. This is useful for drawing up citations from google book sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:20, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Nice one. BTW I've just put in a request for a grant for books here. I gather you're in the US not UK though, I don't think they do it in the US. It would be great to work with you on getting some articles like Sunset Boulevard and any Kubrick film like Clockwork etc up to GA status. I'm certain that you share a similar fine taste in cinema! A long term goal of mine is to get Oscar winners up to GA status. I've just about prepared Wings (1927 film) for GA this morning. Currently gunning for GA if you're interested... Can you find anything more on it? I was wondering if you have access to either the Farmer or 2006 Wellman books on the film. In google books they appeared to be the most resourceful aside from the book I could fully access on it. I'll expand the lead shortly and nominate for GA but if you could further add to it this would be great! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:27, 14 March 2014 (UTC) Talk:Ben-Hur (1959 film)/GA2 has begun. I think I'll split the production into a separate article and then work on condensing it down. I rather liked the length but I do think it's probably too much for a comfortable summary of the film. Don't worry, no information will be lost in the cutting. I've copied it to Production of Ben-Hur (1959 film), can you add the books used for it in the bibliography? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:53, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
I had a feeling you'd not be happy with the condensing. But the reviewer wasn't the only one who thought it was too bloated. A number of very experienced film editors said the same thing and that "no article really needs to be 12,000 words". Detailed is good but a lot of people would find it too much on one page.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:22, 20 March 2014 (UTC) Invitation to Library of Congress Africa Collection EditathonAn exciting month of wiki events!Hello there, I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from. First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation. On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics. The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week. There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events! All the best, (To unsubscribe, remove your username here.) 01:29, 26 March 2014 (UTC) It's up, help oput! Finally making it happen: Sip 'N Dip, stub now, dive in and help! (pun intended!) Montanabw(talk) 22:33, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! A gift from fellow Wikipedians. You have been selected to receive a merchandise giveaway. We last contacted you on 3/29/14. Please send us a message if you would like to claim your shirt. --JMatthews (WMF) (talk) 04:59, 4 April 2014 (UTC) I think we can get this up to GA with limited work, and without cutting :-). It's a great film and the article is already very good, it mainly needs an expansion of the lead, a minor copyedit and source checking/overhaul for verification. Can you do me a favour and format some of the books which have google book previews with urls and any of the newspapers if possible? http://reftag.appspot.com/ is useful for remaking them with google book url links. Some of the books in citations need moving to the bibliography and to be replaced with page numbers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:20, 4 April 2014 (UTC) Are you still mad at me for cutting Ben Hur?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:40, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
I think Keeper of the Flame would be close to promoting with some minor work.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:51, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Cool. The Template:Sfn system would be good. The lead doesn't need sourcing though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:13, 7 April 2014 (UTC) If you just write ref=harv in the cite books in biblio it'll do the same thing! If you can ensure all of the books are placed in the bibliography and try to find some of the page numbers it should be ready for GA! I've nommed for GA anyway, that can be done during the GAN/afterwards, it's only minor now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:55, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Random ping for help at FACHi Tim (and all Tim's stalkers) - I have a race horse article, Mucho Macho Man up for FAC and I'm not getting a lot of reviewers - the ones I have are great but there are only three of them, and I think the FAC promoters like to have a few more. If anyone would like to be so kind as to pop over there and do a review, I'd be grateful. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 22:34, 7 April 2014 (UTC) A Barnstar for You!
@Montanabw: Show me some examples of your Montana work! I thought you only worked on horsies!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:33, 9 April 2014 (UTC) @Dr. Blofeld: Oh, "Neigh!" I only dominate that field, it's not my exclusive area. Heh, ask Tim! Add vandal patrol on several dozen Montana articles for starters, but more to the point: Major contributor (including lead image) for Yogo sapphire (FA, TFA) and verified DYK credits at User:Montanabw#DYK_list for Sip 'n Dip Lounge (7000k + hits at DYK this week), Montana Race to the Sky, Norma Ashby, Dorothy Baker (madam), Temple Emanu-El (Helena, Montana) (hitting both the sacred and the profane), Hotel Baxter, Nelson Story, Albert, Alfred and Chris Schlechten, 1989 Helena train wreck, Bozeman National Fish Hatchery. GA as major contributor to Pryor Mountain Mustang (horses + Montana, what could be better) Also substantial contributions to Montana, fairly substantive contributions (and usually, some photos) at Helena Historic District, Beaverslide (OK, that's kind of a horse article), Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area, Pryor Mountains Wild Horse Range (OK, horse article), Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, Billings, Montana, Great Falls, Montana and Butte, Montana. Most/all the photos and sometimes minor copyedits for Polson, Montana, Anaconda, Montana, First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, Montana ExpoPark, Lewis and Clark County Hospital Historic District, Home of Peace Cemetery (Helena, Montana), Ted's Montana Grill, Kluge House, and today will be adding photos to MacDonald Pass. There are probably others I've popped by on. Also added a bunch of county courthouse photos, some federal courthouse photos, etc. If that doesn't give you a rough idea, ask Tim about more of my Montana photo uploads at commons! I've worked on some of Mike Cline's articles too. Most of the historic ones were in collaboration with the now-retired PumpkinSky, so I've kind of lost momentum absent a co-collaborator, but heh... I am a person of many talents. Montanabw(talk) 17:21, 9 April 2014 (UTC) EskimoCan you sort out the refs for Eskimo (film)? I think we can get that one to GA too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:17, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Excellent, I'll look into it within a few days. Unfortunately progress with the Keeper review has been rather slow..♦ Dr. Blofeld 04:58, 26 April 2014 (UTC) Two edit-a-thons coming up!Hello there! I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:
We have more stuff coming up in May and June, so make sure to keep a watch on the DC meetup page. As always, if you have any recommendations or requests, please leave a note on the talk page.
(To unsubscribe, remove your username here.) 20:39, 25 April 2014 (UTC) Eskimo StarHi, can you reply at the GAR? Not happy with what he's done and said..♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:35, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
That's why I usually try to get a competent, efficient reviewer. Unfortunately at times somebody snaps up the review before they can get to it which is what happened here... If you can get a decent reviewer like Caponer or Smaro then it's worth doing anyway.. I watched Keeper of the Flame earlier actually..♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:26, 7 May 2014 (UTC) For Keeper can you elaborate on "The Bureau's chief, Lowell Mellett, was unhappy with the picture and found it heavy-handed." Does there say anything else about it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:00, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
LOL!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:33, 8 May 2014 (UTC) Finally, both Eskimo and Keeper of the Flame have passed GA! Congrats! Beginning of the End (film) looks like it could pass with the sourcing sorted and a lead expansion. Can you convert to sfn and fill out the refs when you have a moment?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:51, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Eeks sorry to hear that! Get better soon!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:42, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
Tim and his stalkersHey Tim1965, I have a horse favor to ask of you, @Dr. Blofeld: and your other talk page stalkers: I helped get California Chrome to GA and damn if the horse didn't win the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Now it's getting traffic like this! I'm asking the responsible and GA/FA-savvy editors I know to watchlist the article to help patrol for vandals, we're getting them, and it's going to be worse next week as we come up on the 2014 Preakness Stakes. (When in doubt, revert to whatever my last version is, it will be "clean" and I can sift through to add any good new material) While you are at it, can you also watchlist Oxbow (horse), which will be TFA on Preakness day, and I anticipate possible vandal problems there too because the horse's jockey and trainer are both being targeted by PETA for some unfortunate "campfire talk" caught on tape last year. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 22:16, 7 May 2014 (UTC)
Meet up with usHappy May! There are a few meetups in DC this month, including an edit-a-thon later this month. Check it out:
Come one, come all! Best, (To unsubscribe, remove your username here.) 20:21, 10 May 2014 (UTC) A barnstar for you!
So, Dr. Blofeld, do you want to keep those OCLC and ISSN numbers in the bibliography? I think they are fairly useless. OCLC numbers next to an ISBN is repetitive, and should come out. And since all the newspaper/trade magazine cites are coming out of the bibliography anyway and going into footnotes, I think the OCLC numbers should get dumped. Agree or disagree? - Tim1965 (talk) 03:48, 15 May 2014 (UTC) Yeah I don't think they're needed. Obviously keep ISBN though! Hope you're feeling better and drinking plenty of water!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:48, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
How are you feeling Tim?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:46, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
