@Loriendrew: Not a problem; after all, the page is still deletion worthy! I find Google Translate to be a huge help for anything that looks like gibberish -- I am hardly Romanian, but its "autodetect" functionality is often effective enough to at least get the gist of a page when patrolling. Hi JSFarman, thanks for the message. AfCBuddy only runs when Excirial (its sole developer -- AfCBuddy is separate from AFCH, which I co-develop) manually starts it. Sometimes it takes a few days for him to get around to it, but no worries. Theopolisme (talk) 22:19, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

It wouldn't be possible ... would it?

Hi resident bot expert, Theopolisme. It's been a while since we've interacted, but I remember your expertise in bots, and wanted your take on the feasibility of a bot to fill in roster templates (like the one in my sandbox) from a website like this one? Or at least an assisted way? It's extraordinarily tedious to do manually, so I thought there may be a way to automate (preferably one to automate roster templates for all sports). Any thoughts? If you could provide me with specifics (what exactly goes where) then I'd be happy to put something together over the coming weeks (that we could then look into expanding to other sports and such). Really, yahoo! So basically, the one I am working on uses Template:American football roster, and includes parameters for class, number, position, name, etc. that correspond to what is on a team's website. So for example, from the roster website above that I linked, number goes in the "num" parameter, first name in the "first" parameter, last name in the "last" parameter, position in the "pos" parameter, and class in the "class" parameter. These correspond to what is on the roster pages. Most college football teams' websites are run by CBS Interactive, and thus have that same roster format. Thanks! Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Helper script/archive%%0#Option to not watch talk pages inspired me to ask if you could write a script or off-Wiki tool that would take my watchlist (perhaps pasted-in as text if it's an off-wiki tool) and a "number of days ago" then split the list into two sections: Those pages in which EITHER I have edited the page or its talk page in the past X days OR which either the page (if it's a discussion page) or its talk page have a section that has been edited in the last X days which I have also edited, ever.

The idea being if I haven't edited a non-discussion page in X days or nobody has responded in the last X days to something I said on the related discussion page, then I may want to remove the page and its associated talk page from my watchlist. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:23, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Could you check what your bot is doing here? It reduced the file but kept the {{non-free reduce}} tag, and then on the next day it was removed without adding {{non-free reduced}}. It also happened with a couple of other files. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:33, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Looks like the bot crashed midway through its run, so when it encountered the file the next day, it was already reduced, so it removed the tag. Shouldn't happen again -- seems like just a server issue. Let me know if this happens again. Theopolisme (talk) 18:27, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
I see. About crashes, maybe there is something else that you should check? I've noticed that the bot doesn't always reduce all tagged files during the same run. For example, if I tag a dozen files for reduction today, the bot might reduce half of them tomorrow and the other half on the next day. Something seems to stop the bot before it finishes. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:35, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Example: File:Matt Cardle When You Were My Girl.png was tagged on 23 October but still hasn't been reduced, although the bot has been running several times since then. --Stefan2 (talk) 22:22, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Huggle 3

Hey Theopolisme! I am Petrb, one of core developers of Huggle, the antivandalism tool, which you are beta testing (according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers). I am happy to announce that Huggle 3 is ready for some testing. You can read more about it at WP:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta. Please keep in mind that this is a development version and it is not ready for regular use. That means you must:

  • Watch your contribs - when anything happens you didn't want, fix it and report a bug
  • Frequently checkout source code and build latest version, we change it a lot

If you find any problem with a feature that is supposed to work perfectly, please let us know. Some features are not ready yet, it is listed in known problems on Huggle3 beta page, you don't need to report these - we know it! So, that's it. Image resizer

Hi Theo, how are things?

I just tried to reduce File:Dog Trouble poster.jpg using your tool (this is the link provided by the template) and it threw up an internal server error. It might just be toolserver, or not. This is the info:

Life's crazy, but I'm enjoying it, so I think that's a good thing :) Thanks for the report. My toolserver tools are falling into some state of disrepair, especially as everything migrates to Labs. However, it's not really a big deal, because my bot automatically reduces the size of non-free images (example from earlier today), which has made manual resizing fairly antiquated (except for video/audio files, which it can't handle). WikiProject AFC is holding a two month long Backlog Elimination Drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from December 1st, 2013 – January 31st, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all reviewers participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive.

Cyber, I'm a little concerned -- I've been looking through your past projects and talking to some other developers, and it seems like you have a history of proprietary -- as opposed to open -- source code, which runs counter to everything the Wikimedia movements stand for. I'd like to verify that the source of Scotty's tools will be publicly available and open to patches/etc, probably by creating a GitHub repo. TBH, the reason why I was never willing to post Cyberbot's code, is because I was always nervous that my code would receive criticism, and that it would reflect badly towards me as a botop. I've had some time to think about that since spambot, and have come to realize that the best way to get things done is to have more eyes work on it. That's why I plan to release Cyberbot's code. As xtools, that was already decided when I started migrating it. According to User:Cyberbot I, nearly all of the tasks have been takeovers of other peoples code, except for SnotBot which you rewrote and the blacklisted links task, which isn't even listed, so I'm not really sure what you're worried about since barely any of the code is yours. Lua modules

Hi Theo! I was just looking over Module:Interval and Module:Countdown - very nice work. :) I noticed that you were calling the #time parser function, but actually there is already a Scribunto equivalent that you can use, mw.language:formatDate. Also, beware of blank arguments - in Lua, the blank string evaluates to true, so code like if args.duration then x end will be triggered if your module is called like {{countdown|duration=}}. As far as blank arguments -- do I just need to do something like if args.duration && #args.duration? Nope, that's another gotcha. :) Actually, 0 evaluates to true as well. The only things in Lua that evaluate to false are false and nil. I usually work around this by having a function specially for #invoke that trims the arguments and removes the blank ones. (The exact ones you need to remove can vary depending on what template you are converting.) This means that you can just use if args.duration then x end, and it also means you don't have to have a frame object available if you call the module directly from another Lua module. It also means that the code will work whether called directly from #invoke or from a wrapper template. See Module:Toolbar for a typical example of the kind of code I would use. I've also just finished writing Module:Arguments, which does a similar thing with metatables, but I haven't written the documentation up yet - I'll go and do that now. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 02:00, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Ok, Module:Interval is now up in lights. I tweaked it a tiny bit to allow other modules to access it without having to go through a frame object, and I also fixed a bug where n was being compared with a number when n was nil, generating a script error. Unnecessary disambiguation bot

Hi Theo, I love your bot's listing of unnecessary disambiguation. There are a lot of good cases for moves and disambiguation there. I was using this as a workpage when it occurred to me that I might be screwing something up by doing so. Should I leave it to the bot to update the listing? --BDD (talk) 21:10, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

@BDD: Not a problem at all, thanks for working on it! That page only lists the first 10,000 due to technical restrictions (there are actually 30,000+, see thread), so if you manage to get through them and want some more material to chew on just let me know and I'll update the list. Question regarding User:WP 1.0 Bot

Hi! Just a quick question regarding User:WP 1.0 Bot: Would it be possible to get the bot to run a bit more often during the month of December? There is currently a lot of article assessing going on right now, in large part associated with the WP:Stub Contest. The contest appears to be having the effect of motivating a bunch of editors to work on all of the assessment backlogs, not just stubs :) This is a good thing, but means that things have become more than a bit out-of-date, as the bot has not run in a week. This results in all of the tables being way out-of-whack with the actual numbers in the categories, and makes it very hard to discern at a glance how much work has been done. I realize it takes several thousand edits to update every table and log for the entire 'pedia, so am not asking for every day, but could we have it be more often than a week? Every other day or every third day or so? (Addendum: it looks like it last ran on Dec 7, and prior to that was Dec 5...is the week-long wait thing a fluke/bug?) Module:Countdown

Hey. :) I just had a look at Template:Countdown/testcases, and I see a few cases that aren't quite doing what they're supposed to. You're missing a few refresh links, and we could do with including the weeks in the countdown rather than just the years and days. Also, it's advisable to avoid generating script errors where possible, as editors tend to view them as mistakes, don't know that they can be clicked on to find the error message, etc. etc. Instead you can just output an html error with <strong class="error">Error: some error message</strong>. Although if you have an error that is meant to be seen by other module writers and not by editors, it is probably better to use a proper error as they are easier to debug. But other than that it is looking good - thank you again for your work. :) Also, while I am here, it is possible to call the mbox templates directly from Module:Message box - take a look at the instructions on the module page. GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Bot feasibility

Merry Christmas, Theopolisme! I, knowing nothing about bots, wanted to inquire on the feasibility of one that could search some text of an unreferenced article, and compile a list of possible references on the talk page. Wikipedia has hundreds of thousands of unsourced pages, and if a bot could at least suggest possible sources, we would at least have somewhere for an interested reader to go when our article falls woefully short of their expectations. @Go Phightins!: Hope you've had/are having a good holiday! The key thing to remember about robots is this:
It's all about the rules. Even highly sophisticated AI is just following rules based on conditions to generate more rules, etc, etc...
So for this source suggester robot, essentially all it would need is just that -- a list of rules. The question is, how is such a list created? What sources are deemed reliable? How does it find these sources? Searches? Of what? Through what platform? There are a ton of variables here, so it's difficult to envision something of this complexity posting static content on talk pages. However, I could foresee some sort of web service where one types in a Wikipedia article and it spits out suggestions (this could be a lot more modular), if that would be useful to you... The only way this would work, though, is if someone created a detailed outline of what the sources are and how they should be obtained (no easy task). Well, Mr. Wales states specifically in that section to add said edits to the user page itself: "You can edit this page! Really, you can! If you would like to, please feel free to do so. Make an edit! Make several edits! After all, that is what Wikipedia is all about." He also states there "Comments or questions regarding how this page currently looks should be directed to my talk page, rather than this page." So, I think it's appropriate per Mr. Wales' statement. Hey, Bishonen. I actually have no control over HostBot. It is operated by Jtmorgan, and some more information about this specific task can be found at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Hosts/Database reports/Automated invites. Essentially, I put my name on a list a while ago and it is now used in these personalized invitations (so yea, I could theoretically revert it but it seems like a more ideal solution would be for the bot to be modified to not invite indef-blocked users...). If the block was 6 min before the invite, it probably wasn't enough time for the bot to get the message (so to speak: it checks the logging table for blocks before sending the messages, but there is usually some lag between block actions and db updates). Theo's little Bot Task 21

It's running, but can I make a suggestion?

I'm finding with some media it generates, that a description can be found by looking at the usage of the image, and pulling a caption from the relevant pages? Would it be possible to amend the bot task so it can do caption pulling?

The suggestion is to pull the caption from the page and then put something like Caption on : {article name}{caption}

Rotten Tomatoes bot stalled

Hi,

It looks like Theo's Little Bot may have stalled on Task 22, or at least is running slower than expected. I added {{Rotten Tomatoes score}} to Micmacs (film) almost an hour ago, but it's still saying "refresh in a few minutes" as I write this.

If you could take a look and work out what's gone wrong I'd be grateful.
