GA Sweeps update

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 90% done with only 226 articles remain to be swept! As always, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. With over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 4 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. As an added incentive, if we complete over 100 articles reviewed this month, I will donate $100 to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps participants. I hope that this incentive will help to increase our motivation for completing Sweeps while supporting Wikipedia in the process. Removal of Foswiki timeline

Isn't it though? At the present, until sufficient time elapses to garner notability, the WP Foswiki page is deleted. But if anyone enters foswiki in the search bar, they're dumped onto the TWiki page.

Just Out, COTW does well in new decade

Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.

Anyway, this week, we have by request the completely unrelated Just Out and Terrell Brandon. As always, click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW.   • All theatre articles currently tagged with a project banner have now been assessed for quality. There are still plenty to assess for importance, though - see the article assessment page for details.
  • There is now a News section on the main project page, updated automatically to keep us informed of developments in theatre articles.
Collaboration of the Month
  • Theatre has been nominated as the next project collaboration. This could be an excellent opportunity to improve the quality of one of our most important articles - listed as one of Wikipedia's top 1000 most vital articles - but it needs a lot of work before it can be considered for even good article nomination!
  • Stop by the collaboration page for tips on how to improve an article, to add your support, or to suggest alternative or future collaborations.
Jobs you can do

Any and all improvements to theatre-related articles will help the project, but if you're looking for something to do, have a look at the to-do list. Some current areas of priority are:

If you are currently working on a particular topic or area of the project, and would like to muster some support from other editors, feel free to add tasks to the to-do list. Or even think about setting up an informal working group - create a project subpage to organise tasks in a central location. Re: Anqing Foreign Language School article

Steve, thank you sincerely for your help. School is on break in February, but I will be in touch once we start again. Your edits could be an invaluable way for me to teach my students about how Wikipedia works.

As a side note, as opposed to using my own, I have decided to create a new account, e.g. AFLS 2009-10 English Corner Students, when I actually post the article on the real wikipedia. I feel it is the right thing to do. Then, I can also have the students design their User Profile, too. February GA Sweeps update

Progress as of January 2010

Thanks to everyone's efforts to the GA Sweeps process, we are currently over 95% done with around 130 articles left to be swept! Currently there are over 50 members participating in Sweeps, that averages out to about 3 articles per person! If each member reviews an article once a week this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. At that point, awards will be handed out to reviewers. Per my message last month, although we did not review 100 articles last month, I still made a donation of $90 (we had 90 reviews completed/initiated) to Wikipedia Forever on behalf of all GA Sweeps reviewers. I would like to thank everyone's efforts for last month, and ask for additional effort this month so we can be finished. I know you have to be sick of seeing these updates (as well as Sweeps itself) by now, so please do consider reviewing a few articles if you haven't reviewed in a while. Standing-up sheep

Hi Van! Just wondered if you've ever come across any reference to sheep standing on their hind legs? Goats do this quite readily when browsing, and I've often seen sheep stand up on a fence or stump with their front legs to reach higher vegetation, but I've never seen them stand freely on their hind legs as goats can. Is that universal amongst sheep, or is it just the European breeds I'm familiar with? I think the heavy breeds might be physically incapable of it, but I can't think what's stopping my Hebrideans reaching those tasty bushes just above their heads. References to source material - the Hiromi Uehara example

Good morning Mr. Walling. I hope you find add/delete wars as distasteful as I do, so lets talk rather than undoing and redoing each other's work. It is obvious from your deletion comment that my inclusion of a reference to the Hiromi interview has struck a nerve. I am hopeful that you can refrain from invective in your future comments. To accuse another contributor of inserting spam is a serious charge, and in my opinion one that you should take great care before rendering. I presume that the comment was reactionary in nature -- perhaps caused by previous experiences that you have had with real spammers. I hope I can assure you that I am not one of those.

Thank you and others for your efforts to clean up Wikipedia articles, including the Hiromi article. However, I find that all too often, people who edit many varied articles become more concerned with form, and less concerned with the true purpose of Wikipedia - communicating useful information about a subject within the format of an encyclopedia. In the case of the Hiromi article, a significant amount of useful information was removed when the "External Links" section was recently cleaned up. Please note, that section *needed* to be cleaned up, but cleaning by simple deletion does a disservice to the readers who would find some of the deleted information useful. After all, if Wikipedia is not for its readers, then what is it for?

In the particular case of the most recent addition/deletion of the link to the Innerviews interview with Hiromi, I think you'd be hard pressed to find it irrelevant to the subject, or even relevant to any other subject than the subject of Hiromi. It is also not promoting anything other than a sharing of knowledge about the subject. As such, it clearly does not meet the accepted definition of spam, but instead contains exactly the kind of "further detail" and source material that references are for. Further, the work of referencing some source material for the Hiromi article is still largely work yet to be done. In fact, the article is noted as being without enough citations/references/source material. The interview that I referenced is a serious one. It is not a PR piece. It is not a puff piece by a fan. It is a serious interview by a noted interviewer of other similar artists. I am not sure what caused you to refer to it as spam, and am hopeful that you will take the time to review it and see that it is not.

My question to you is: If not in the way that I did it, how would you prefer that facts in Wikipedia articles about artists be sourced and referenced?

Oregon COTW and randomness

Greetings fellow WikiProject Oregon member, it is once again time for the Collaboration of the Week (yes, I know they are not actually every week anymore). Thank you to those who helped out the last few weeks improving Terrell Brandon, Just Out, 75th Oregon Legislative Assembly, and all the unreferenced BLPs. This week we have by request Oregon Coast Aquarium and Arvydas Sabonis (maybe the Blazers can sign him as I think he's healthy). Both need more sourcing. GA Sweeps Completed!

Thanks to everyone's amazing efforts in February, we have reviewed all of the articles and are now finished with Sweeps! There are still about 30 articles currently on hold, and once those reviews are completed, I will send you a final message about Sweeps process stats including the total number of articles that were passed and failed. If you have one of these open reviews, be sure to update your count when the review is completed so I can compile the stats. You can except to receive your award for reviewing within the next week or two. Although the majority of the editors did not start Sweeps at the beginning in August 2007 (myself included), over 50 editors have all come together to complete a monumental task and improve many articles in the process. I commend you for sticking with this often challenging task and strengthening the integrity of the GA WikiProject as well as the GAs themselves. I invite you to take a break from reviewing (don't want you to burn out!) and then consider returning/starting to review GANs and/or contribute to GAR reviews. With your assistance, we can help bring the backlog down to a manageable level and help inspire more editors to improve articles to higher classes and consider reviewing themselves. Mars?

I hope you don't mind, but I just wanted to ask about your reasons for protecting Mars. An article such as Mars requiring fewer then one revert per day hardly seems excessive, and you'll notice that all of the vandalism was reverted very quickly.

I protected it not because the vandalism wasn't getting reverted quickly (it almost always is). I protected it because it's a high-profile article that received a relatively large volume of vandalism from diverse sources (more than one individual, both anons and users) in a relatively short period of time. That, plus the fact that a Featured Article is unlikely to need lots of help with drastic or pressing edits in the short term, is why I accepted the protection request made at RFPP. I didn't say "FAs don't need IP edits". I said that vandalism from diverse sources temporarily outweighs the need for edits from anonymous/new users. Semi-protection is by definition temporary. April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. Hi Steve. Looking for a little help and input. Some pages appear to have been deleted without any process. For example, World66 is just gone. This page was created before Internet Brands even bought the site. A singe user seems to have revved-up some support for mass deletion of pages related to Internet Brands. Advice? Hi Steven Walling! I saw your tag at this page and I was wondering two things:

  • if you felt the article was promotional, couldn't you have listed it at AfD or maybe even the BLP noticeboard? I think at first glance the subject appears marginally or maybe just notable enough for our standards, so I would like to think that we could improve it instead of deleting it.
  • I'm assuming this - but did you decide not to use the tools to delete such an article?

Hello! I was just wondering why the page for Thieves Like Us (originally Thieves_Like_Us_(band)), a quite active band with an album and several singles out, has been deleted. Was the article not detailed enough, or was the information supplied deemed invalid...?

CVM

Steven... it's been a while but I thought I'd try to explain why I deleted that entry. So, the CVM link is a redirect to Romeldale. So, to avoid duplicate links and since CVM is a subtype, I thought I would keep the Romeldale link and remove the CVM link. Thoughts? Nice to see you still here! Thank you for your explanation on my talk page. The way I look at is simply, the two articles that you reference are distinct. The difference on the Sheep Breeds page is that a redirect is listed instead of an article. I agree that CVM is a subtype and that people looking specifically looking for CVM need to have the ability to make the connection between CVM and Romeldale. Munson Page Deletion

Steve, Thank you for reviewing the page I created for Steve Munson, but I do not understand why its up for deletion. I have tried to make it unbiased, non promotional and have taken in considered the edits from other editors and made changes. All the references I have included are active and valid and the ones that are not have been removed. The legal cases are referenced properly and can be obtained locally or through a database like Gapers - they just cant be directly linked to. New Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador

Just giving you my standard heads-up after I revert an admin action to prevent the appearance of wheel-warring. The above mentioned town is a real settlement in Canada and, therefore, meets inclusion guidelines. Judging from some of the recent additions by a newer user, it did indeed appear to be nonsense, but after a quick reversion back to an earlier stub, the article can now await someone else to have a crack at it in the future. deletions of Peter Ralston and Cheng Hsin

Hi Steven,

I'm an instructor of a small martial art in London, and after a student noticed that pages on that art has disappeared from wikipedia, I began investigating and found they had been deleted. I noticed one editor who had given up on saving the articles as he could find no concrete information on a very basic claim by them. I had a brief but useful conversation with him, but as he is not very active at the moment, he suggested that I should perhaps run my questions by someone on the Martial Arts project. I had a look at the Martial Arts Project page, noticed that you practiced Tai Chi and Hsing I, and were active, so thought to ask your help.

My goal is to have the pages resurrected if possible. Could I ask you to have a look please? The conversation is still on BenTels talk page: (talk), but I have also copied it to my talk page: (talk). Could you please have a read of that when you have a chance and let me know what you think?

I'm not sure if that is referring to the above 'deletions of Peter Ralston and Cheng Hsin'. If not, sorry for the mistaken response. If so, then the sources I referenced were already quoted in the articles in question (excepting a reference to another wikipedia page, which is not of great importance). I'm not sure why they didn't show up in any discussion I found of the deletions (after the fact), but I'm supposing it's because they are all hard copy (periodicals or books). March 2011 GAN backlog elimination drive a week away

Theatre Project collaboration

WPORE COTW 2.0 - the picture edition

Greetings one and all. For some of you, this will be your first time receiving one of these messages, as it has been a year since the WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week (COTW) was a regular thing. My hope is it gets back to being a regular thing.

Usually I would go over the past COTW, but we are basically starting out anew. So, without further adieu, this edition is our semi-annual picture drive. We usually try to do it when there is decent weather in the state, and today seems to fit the bill. Now although you are encouraged to go out and take pictures, you can also just search the internet for images that have the proper licensing and upload those. Flickr is one site that has a fair amount of content with the proper licensing (most images on Flickr are not compatible). See WP:COPYRIGHT in general. For some “free” sources, check out the our dormant subproject that has some links to sources.

Lastly, if you need to know what images we need, here are the requests. Please remove the request from the talk page if you add an image.

Finally (this is not image related), as the years have passed, we have lost many good editors, and others, like myself, are no longer in school or are working full-time or both, and thus are less active in the project. The project lives on, but it has created a bit of a power vacuum without a de facto cabal still around all the time. With that in mind, I encourage newer project members to step-up and fill some leadership type roles. Granted, we have no formal ruling junta or anything and no real defined roles, but there are many maintenance type tasks that some of us just took on to keep the project going. For instance, I ran the COTW, was pretty much the only one doing assessments, updating the portal, and even handing out the awards. I am sure others in the project can name what things they have done. The point being, that while I enjoyed those and still do some of those, I simply no longer have the free time to do all of it at a level that the project deserves. That said, I hope to start a discussion at WT:ORE where we can see if some newer editors would like to step-up and take on some of these tasks, which will hopefully make for a more inclusive project, and maybe get us back to the heyday of say 2008 when things were really rocking for WikiProject Oregon.

I will have to look into what defines an edit as "minor" versus major; I don't want to assess inaccurately -- and as you guessed, that setting is checked and I need to uncheck it. Today, though, I'm hoping for your help on a photo I uploaded, File:BradLamm2011.jpeg, for the article Brad Lamm. I have permission and evidently I didn't adequately convey that on the photo's info page because I received a message that the photo will be deleted unless it's properly tagged.
