Hello. I have a question about semantics and the opportuny of creating a new subcategory into Cat:Philately : Category:Postage stamp drawer ?

  • I think it is needed like on fr: and de: and can bring into light people that usually are forgotten ("were" in France where they are very mediatized by the French philatelic litterature since the 1990's).
  • If agreed, what would be the correct formulation in english, please ?

I'll use Category:Stamp designers (category are always plural on en.wiki if I well remember).
Yes, some engravers actually create the design of some stamps they engrave. On fr.wiki I use a lone category to have in one cateogry all artists involved in stamp design, and other categories put them in their originate category (C:engravers or C:illustratrors, etc.).

On de:, a user used his passion for Feroese stamps to add some artists ; on fr:, I simply open a stamp magazine to find enough to fill a stub et Dallay catalog to add a quite complete list of stamps.

As you specified no quantification, you can't blame me for interpreting it as universal quantification. I have enough trust in the ArbCom that they will see that there are enough real problems appart from the nitpicking. Have you already read the pages referenced in User:R.Koot/Request for Comments on User:CarlHewitt? While Carl is indeed an expert on the actor model, he is also making some claims on subject such as physics, mathematics and logic. I was rereading the USS Missouri (BB-63) article and got to the part about the battle stars the ship earned: Three for service in WWII and five for service in Korea. Civic arms

Hello. I see you are adding some of the civic arms to articles. Unfortunately they are all defunct arms i.e no longer used and the way they have been added in articles suggests they are current. Also in the case of Chelmsford the arms were for a district which surrounded the town but did not include it. Please watch out for this if you consider adding any others. Hi, I just read your comment to User:CSTAR, and while I think I understand why you wrote that, I think you misunderstood why users like CSTAR, EMS, Linas, myself, .... (four active editors right there) were all so upset with User:CarlHewitt. I hope you will take time to look over User:Hillman/Wikipedia_quality_control#Comments_regarding_the_Carl_Hewitt_RfAr and to consider leaving a "peace dove" message I can pass on to CSTAR, since apparently your comment was the last straw which broke the Camel's back. I don't think a retraction is neccessary, just an acknowledgement that (as I assume is the case) you didn't look over the entirety of our attempts to persuade Carl that his articles were most inappropriate at WP, and that you might not have fully understood our problem with Carl's WP activity. Russian Museum pic

Hi Stan, I tried to address your concerns. St Petersburg is 800 km from the place I live in, so a drive would take time ;). Everyday I notice pictures that are being downloaded without any tags at all (e.g., Image:Narikala,_Tbilisi.jpg and other images by the same uploader). There are other untagged images that have been gracing some major articles for ages - Image:Katedra_na_wawelu.jpg in Krakow, Image:Warszawa2.jpg in Warsaw, Image:Klostera_iela.jpg in Riga. I think I'll change it back. ({{Non-free fair use in}} didn't exist when I uploaded the image...) I try to tag images as PD only when I'm sure that they really are because our PD templates make such bold claims ("world-wide"). (I have goofed occasionally, though.) What has 1936 got to do with it? If you're thinking of "70 years ago", please note that (a) it's only 69 years by now, and far more importantly (b) that the rule is "70 years after the death of the photographer", not 70 years after publication. And anyway, how do you know it wasn't taken later? It might easily date from anywhen between 1933 and about 1941. (I have found other postcards from 1941, and I consider it unlikely there were any later ones printed during the war.) Just curious as to how you arrived at 1936... Hi, great work on the Bob Kershaw article so far, especially considering the paucity of online references. Unfortunately I don't have any information about either Kershaw and Frost close to hand, but I'll go through my books to see if I can dig up some more, and I'll try get my hands on a copy of Brown's book. Whack bogus template. Why?

Please explain why you would remove the totally valid 'Category:Irish postage stamp images' template from the 'Irl_1989_sheridan.jpg' image? This IS an Irish postage stamp image, so what's the problem? Adding this template means other users can find the image more quickly while browsing the category. Comic pics

By definition, a comic cover's source is always known - it is the publisher, whose name even conveniently appears on the cover so there is no doubt. So it is nonsensical to add {{no source}} to those images. Similarly for comic panels. Stan

See WP:CENT/FUC - the source of the scan itself is important too. If you disagree, say so on that talk page before it's finalised.

Oh, and I fail to see how you can tell the comic a panel came from just by looking at it, unless you're familiar with the comic itself. - SoM 20:28, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a degree in copyright law, so no, I cannot provide a detailed explanation of why this image is fair use. My real basis for using it is that I have written permission from the copyright holder to do so. If that is not good enough then you might as well delete it, and all the others I have added on the same basis, and I will wash my hands of the whole sorry business. I must say though that if anyone thinks Wikipedia is remotely ready to be put into print or any other commercial product, or is ever likely to be under its present structure, they are kidding themselves. For Crean I have the 1953 Handbook, in which he appears as a young MP. Since that edition is entirely clear of copyright I will upload that photo when I get home from my current travels. French military images

I'm afraid that copyright on products of the French government is a somewhat complex topic. On the one hand, certain documents of a legal or administrative nature (for instance, the text of laws and regulations) cannot be copyrighted (or more appropriately, their use is free), that's for sure. On the other hand, the government can copyright certain data produced for commercial or quasi-commercial purposes (say, software produced in national technological laboratories). In the middle is a large grey area.

While many government services like to claim copyright on their images (in order to control their usage, presumably), some legal scholars allege that the government or public establishments cannot hold copyrights unless their stated purpose is to produce intellectual property. Since the job of the military is to provide defense, in this interpretation the use of these images is free.

This is a very complex topic and we're working right now with French legal scholars to get some clarification. David.Monniaux 19:18, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We're still working on clearing that up. This is somewhat hairy. (I've had the Webmaster of the Ministry on the phone today, and essentially they give us a free license for our sites, as long as we're informative, which is "fair use". The problem is that he cannot grant authorization for commercial reuse, so we're applying to a higher level.)

Incorrect image tag

You mistakenly used the wrong tag for Image:CarnegieMellonSeal.gif. Template:seal is used for seals of governmental agencies only. Template:Coat of arms (and possibly Template:Logo) is the appropriate seal.

Apple Computer

The article on Apple Computer is filled with unverifiable opinion, hearsay, and editorialization. There is a Wikipedia enthusiast out there who will not allow anyone to remove the nonsense. I agree with your comment about tweaking it, to improve the article. Might you try to remove the opinions (see history -- someone was trying to do that, but it was undone).

Stan, I believe the "enthusiast" in question is me. The above unsigned comment by an anon IP is probably User:MathStatWoman having logged out in an attempt to hide her identity. Hmmmm... I agree a review of the history will reveal the truth... anyway, there are definitely some areas that need improvement as discussed in the proper place, but wholesale deletion would seem not to be the answer. One more thing. As an admin, are you able to check a user's IP address? If so, can you have a look and see if user:DeveloperFrom1983 is the same as user:MathStatWoman? (IP something like 151.197.161.81) One disappeared at the same time as the other appeared, both editing the same article, both using similar language and making similar points. DelevoperFrom1983 is adding a lot of stuff to Apple Computer which I believe is inappropriate (all the Drexel seeding stuff, for example), though it might find a home elsewhere. There are too many edits being made too quickly to deal with right now; I'm getting tired and I need to sleep. But I would like to know if there is some sockpuppetry going on. Deleted images

Stan, while checking my user page I noticed that one of the images linked from it disappeared without a trace. I discovered that three images uploaded by me long ago under fairuse licence - File:Krom.jpg, File:Krutitsy.jpg, - were removed by OrphanBot from the articles on Pskov, Krutitsy, Zvenigorod and deleted without prior notification of myself as the uploader. In the past, when OrphanBot removed fairuse images, I instantly provided the source and restored the images to the article. Since you sent me a message, I assume that it is acceptable that I contact you.

First, you should know that I am new to Wikipedia. Second, you should know that I am an old retired professor of computer science. Most of the editors on Wikipedia seem to be much younger than I. Third, no, I did not attempt a major edit. I added a sentence or two from the era through which I lived and worked, thinking it would be interesting. Fourth, I think that it is ironic that Wikipedia is supposed to be edited by anyone, yet the page about Wikipedia is un-editable!

I had the unique opportunity to be witness to the development of the modern computer, to teach FORTRAN, BASIC, and APL; to meet and speak with people like Grace Murray Hopper (who is not even mentioned within the article about Computers or computer science, which is unforgiveable -- but the Wikipedia editors don't let me add the information that I have gathered through the years and decades.

I have stopped editing, and Wikipedia will not benefit from my persepective, or perhaps the "experienced" editors believe that we older folks are "fools" ( a favorite word of Gramamuk) and our insight is of no value.
