A belated apology

Spawn Man, I am sincerely sorry for how I conducted myself when we last interacted. I hope that any negative effect my comments had on you at the time have long gone away, as what I said was mailicious and unwarranted. Coordinating WP dino collab

It's mainly all the frigging around. Wikipedia is really unpopular in my house at the moment and I hate to have scheduled tasks that I might have to take time away from a few other things I really need to be doing at home. The userpage came from Sharon/Phaedriel. I copied teh code for user talk page but then made a mess of the page and she whipped one up for me. I'm going through all the animal anatomic articles on Wikipedia & noticed your post on Category talk:Animal anatomy & thought maybe you'd like to help me? I've rewritten & expanded these articles so far: Dewlap, Armour (zoology), Neck frill & I've attempted to expand Club (zoology), but it's a harder topic. Well if you'll read what you wrote, you'll notice you didn't specify anyone else but me, so it's not hard to see how I might have thought you were dumping it all on me. I'm also not sure how else to read "I'm sure I'll be able to support in any future FAC this article might have if you fix the problem" other than how Dinoguy did. And I'm flabbergasted that when you said "The text on the relationship between Gorgi & Daspi is too overpowering & consumes a large portion of the text..." you were really only referring to one sentence in the entire article, since apparently you are fine with the rest. So maybe you just need to work on writing what you actually mean. That's all I'm gonna say. (shrug) Sheep81 07:47, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

It isn't a discussion anyway, it's you demanding a ridiculous nitpicky change and nobody else agreeing with you. I'm tired of repeating the same points over and over when you don't listen to them anyway. So no, I'm not going to "discuss" it anymore. Thanks for the apology. But dude, I do have to go to sleep at some point. It was after 2am when I signed off of Wikipedia last night. And I have to eat and pay rent, so after that I was at work. I wish I could get paid to write dinosaur articles on Wikipedia, but alas I have to go slogging around outside all day. So no, I haven't been ignoring you, just attending to my real life (such as it is).

Regarding your question about that one sentence, like I said, I'm through arguing with you about this. It goes nowhere except in circles. You think that one sentence, a whole 169 bytes out of all 30,018 bytes in the article, which briefly mentions Gorgosaurus in passing, is somehow "overpowering" and somehow makes you think the entire article is about Gorgosaurus. How can I argue with that? So no, I'm not going to bother to get into another argument which will end the exact same way the last one did. I feel it would more productive and waste less time to just bang my head against the wall. I'm sorry if that's "childish". Sheep81 05:55, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Well they aren't just random dinosaurs, they're other tyrannosaurs. The sentence before lists a few unique characters of Daspletosaurus, this just shows another way to differentiate Daspi from other tyrannosaurs. I don't know how relevant it would be to list the ways you can tell Daspi from Anchisaurus since their most recent common ancestor (probably) lived in the Middle Triassic, but I do think it's useful to show the reader how to tell apart three superficially identical tyrannosaurs, two of which lived in the same place at the same time. How do readers know that these animals aren't all the same if we don't tell them how? Sure we say they have different names, but we can give different names to any number of things we please, even if they are identical. What is it that makes scientists think they are different enough to deserve different names?

I didn't want to list all the other tyrannosaurs, that would be ridiculous, just like you said. So I picked Daspi's closest relative and the one that was contemporaneous. You know, the ones people might be most likely to compare to Daspi. Shocking! I don't care if 100 other dinosaur FACs don't compare to their subjects to other dinosaurs. They SHOULD. That's comparative anatomy. It's important. It's a foundation of modern biology. Tens of thousands of words have been written comparing Daspletosaurus to its relatives. Gorgi's orbits aren't anything but circular, because they're circles. Circles are by definition circular. So maybe when I say "the circular shape seen in Gorgosaurus" you would think "oh he means a circle". And when I use the term 'keyhole' to describe Rex's orbits, it's because that's the term used in the literature, it's more concise than saying "the orbit of Tyrannosaurus, which is constricted caudally by a forward-pointing process of the postorbital" and it has the added advantage of being in plain English. If someone really wants to see the shape of the orbit of Rex, they can head right over to that page and see what I mean in about 5-10 seconds depending on their connection speed. And yes, there are many shapes that could be between a circle and a 'keyhole', but you don't have to imagine all those shapes because I just told you that it was a tall oval! Not too hard to picture, I don't think! A first grader can understand "tall oval". You are obviously grasping at straws here, NOBODY agrees with you (even though most haven't posted anything because they see that an argument with you is like being sucked into a tar pit), so I see no reason to keep defending the sentence. This time, I'm really not going to respond further. I've explained myself as best I can. I can't believe I got into an argument about shapes with you! Shapes!! I've also gotten involved with an FAR of schizophrenia, though it really seems too much like work to me. As I'm a doctor I'm worried I've descended too much into jargon. WP:TOL

Spawn, please discuss stuffl ike this first. I don't know what you are using to define "reptile", but every definition I've ever heard includes dinosaurs. Even phylogenetically, there are two definitions. One, monophyletic, would include birds and other dinosaurs as reptiles. The traditional, paraphyletic definition used on TOL for simplicity's sake is paraphyletic and excludes birds and mammals, not non-avian dinosaurs. Any way you cut it, they are reptiles. As are pterosaurs, but you didn't remove WP:Pterosaurs... they're warm blooded, have "fur", etc. Also, you're post on Mgigantius' talk page seems to indicate that you're mis-reading the quote from Dinosaur. You seem to think that because some prehistoric reptiles were not dinosaurs, dinosaurs were not prehistoric reptiles. This doesn't make sense. What it actually means is that all dinosaurs are reptiles, but not all reptiles are dinosaurs. Dinoguy2 09:26, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Well, back in the old days groups were loosely defined based on characteristics like fur or metabolism. Bakker thought that since dinosaurs may have been warm blooded (no solid evidence all of them were anyway), they should be in their own class, Archosauria, with birds as a sub-class. People accepted a lot of his ideas but not his classificaton (Greg Paul tried something similar with the same result). Nowadays there are two ways of classifying--one doesn't use classes, so nothing ever 'splits off' from anything else. Dinosaurs are reptiles are tetrapods are vertebrates are bilaterians are animals are bacteria etc etc. The older way is used to divide up the wikiprojects, and they keep the traditional classes of reptiles, mammals, birds, etc, with Archaeopteryx as the split-off point between reptiles and the new group, leaving all the other dinos in Reptilia (aka Sauropsida). Now, the advent of the new system basically made vertebrate paleontologists completely abandon the old one (a lot of other scientists continue to use both), which is why Bakker's class Dinosauria or Archosauria as seperate from reptiles never caught on... would have been nice, but what can you do. Bakker also wanted to seperate pterosaurs and crocodiles from reptiles and put them in one class with dinos and birds, btw. Dinoguy2 15:09, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

My understanding is that you did a lot of work on coding the Dinosaur Portal; at least, looking thru your contribs, that is what it looks like. So, I believe you deserve the barnstar. You do a good job promoting dinosaurs and the wikiproject on Wikipedia; you deserve recognition for that. As far as Daspletosaurus goes, I'm glad to see you are trying to make amends on Sheep's talk page. These arguments will happen, and it's nice to see that even though the two of you disagree, you haven't reverted to the name-calling and stuff that you used to do in days long ago. My advice, Spawny, is just to forget about this silly argument, and move on. What started out a civil discussion about the article has devolved into... well, basically a tar pit. I don't want to get involved, because I have a lot of respect for both of you, but I don't see what was wrong with the original article as written, and I think the dispute could easily be solved by sending the article to scientific peer review, where a neutral group of readers can decide what they think of the article. Sheep didn't say that you have the knowledge of a first grader, only that "a first grader can understand "tall oval"". With thousands of very incomplete articles to work on, there's no reason for you to leave and plenty of very good reasons for you to stay (Avemetatarsalia, Vulcanodontidae, Predentary bone, Plateosauridae, Rostral bone, etc). Commas or parentheses for scientific name in opening sentence and elsewhere

(Now that was a long header wasn't it?) There's a debate here about commas versus parentheses for scientific names for organisms (well in this case birds). Odd.....

I just checked edit count & noticed that the count only had me down for 288 edits to the article Dinosaur. This is odd because I specifically remember that's the only article I've ever made over 300 edits to. How could my edit count for that article have gone down by 12 edits? Yeah, you're right; I keep a close watch on edit count. I think it's really interesting, and the tools people make are so neat.

Hmm... Both Wannabe Kate and Page Statistics agree that you have made "only" 288 edits to Dinosaur. They're only bots, and they do make mistakes (because of corrupted data or whatever), but are you sure you counted right? The only other thing I can think of is that versions of the pages were oversighted (removed from the history), but that almost never happens. Still, you shouldn't feel bad that you "only" made 288 edits; you should be proud of your accomplishments on that article; it's Featured because of you! Hi Spawn Man, Thanks for making the effort to try to apologise about our WP Dino argument, but it hasn't done anything to change my mind about you. It seems to be your way, blow up at someone, then turn around and apologise (in a backhanded sort of way). Every other editor responded positively but you, because I think I made a reasonable point in a reasonable way. My original comments on the dinosaur talk page were respectful and appropriate, and I think you need to ask yourself why you are the only one that has reacted in a negative way. Look, this isn't a personal crusade on my part, I just don't want to have to deal with your over reactions to honest criticism. And since I don't think you're about to change, that means having as little to do with you as possible.

P.S. If you'll read my comments again, I think you'll find I never called you "vicious", I was on fact referring to that fact that you have misinterpreted my criticism of the dino project's direction as a vicious attack on you, which is not the case.

Actually, my comments were mostly about John, made on a public talk page where anyone can read them. I certainly didn't think you'd be upset, or I wouldn't have made them.

I don't need you apologising for me Firs, I'm quite capable of doing it myself, as I already have in a way.

I wasn't apologising for you; I asked John not to let his feelings about you keep him from working on the project, not "Sorry about all the things Spawn Man said." There is a big difference. I'm glad you aplogized to John, but as he already knows it will only be a few more weeks before a fight erupts between you and someone else over a misunderstanding, and he clearly doesn't want to deal with it, he is not seriously considering working within the project. Which is a shame. But even you know it will only be a few more weeks before a fight erupts between you and someone else over a misunderstanding, as you've said in the past. One time, you went 40 days without an argument.

If you have a problem about how I act, place it on my talk page, not someone elses.

Where did I say THAT, Spawn? Certainly not on John's talk page. Spawnie, sometimes I think you get upset about things that aren't even said. I certainly didn't say the things you accuse me of, above, and didn't see a problem leaving a note for John that was pretty much about John on John's talk page.

I wouldn't want to be a problem or a hinder to anyone wanting to get things done around the project. In any case, it's good to know who your friends are...

The portal have only been up for three weeks, and you are already tired of it. I nominated Portal:China twice, and the first nomination was up there for two months. The second nomination is now here for two months yet again, and no one is willing to promote it. It is impossible to keep the interest with this much of inactivity (which is frustrating), but that's just the way it is. Spawn Man, there is still plenty that needs done, and we've got some very popular and well-known dinosaurs that need tons of improvement (Brachiosaurus, Apatosaurus, Allosaurus, Coelophysis, Plateosaurus, many others). These articles are under-referenced and need your help. If you're bored working on dinosaurs, by all means, go work on something else for a while, but like I said before, there are over a thousand articles which need major improvements, so it's not like you ever have to come into contact with someone you disagree with: it's like a house with a thousand rooms. Breaking my vow of silence:

Hi Firs! I think I've done pretty well staying under the radar recently - heck nobody even knew it was my second first edit day bar one guy! Mind you no one would have remembered anyway lol. ;) Anyway, I've still got a nagging feeling about that user User:Cuddly Panda. Firstly, I get blocked on site for any incivilty, however it ergs me that this user has been abusing the image and uploading system numerous times for a long while without even a single warning. After I came to you with this problem last time, I gave the user a comment about the uploading rules, which they ignored, and as I said I'd do, I placed a complaint on the admin's noticeboard. This went without any comments on it and nobody warned the user. Since then I've seen the user place at least one fair use image (without trying to look for more as I've got better things to do) on Tyrannosaurus in popular culture without fair use rationale (I've noted on the article's AfD that it needs rationale) so this indicates that the user has not responded to any of the messages I've left or the bot warnings. I'm coming to you not as a friend, but as a user who is citing another user for abuse of the system. A simple warning would make me happy, as the user has not recieved one despite my best efforts. And the noticeboard hasn't been useful either times I've managed to use it, so I thought I'd see if you could do something. People listen to admins. P.S. I also have a hunch that the user is also using a sockpuppet - I'd do it myself, but I don't know how, but is there a way we could check user User:Not an anon anymore? The user has the same user boxes, has been in contact with Cuddly Panda, has had the same problems formatting their signature, writes in similar articles and has a similar mannerism. Hey Spawn!

CP and NAAA just look like good friends: they don't appear to have the same userboxes (you and I seem to share more interests than they do!) And I certainly haven't seen any evidence either one has used either account abusively (!voting on the same discussions, etc). Failing to provide a Fair Use Rationale will only result in the image being deleted, so it's to the user's benefit to provide one, but I can't force someone to provide a Fair Use rationale, and he/she will already receive a warning each time such an image goes up for deletion, so there's no reason for additional warnings.
