User talk:SpacemanSpiff/Archives/2012/August

Hey. I saw your message at commons on my talk page. I also observed that you have removed all the files under this category. It was created per FL review for the article. Is there any reason for which we shouldnt be doing it? Same has been done for Academy Awards. I thought you would be more reachable here than commons so pinged here. - Vivvt • (Talk) 11:10, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

The category the way it's been named (on Commons) should be for images from the 59th National Film Awards, not for photographs of people who were nominees of those, but taken elsewhere. e.g. If you create Commons:Category:59th National Film Awards winners (or nominees), then those could include categories such as Commons:Category:Javed Jaffrey or images of those without a category, but the category as it was titled wasn't the right place for those images. On the FL review I don't see where it calls for a category on Commons and I know that's not a normal FL requirement. Hope this helps. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 11:18, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
This is what it says on FL review. "Remove the gallery section as per WP:IG. You may create a category in Wikimedia commons for that, and then link the category in the external links section.". Per your comments and FL review, I will create a category at commons with the name Commons:Category:59th National Film Awards winners (if not created earlier) and will link it to the article. - Vivvt • (Talk) 11:54, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Galleries are not categories on Commons. See Commons:Mohandas K. Gandhi for an example of a gallery. So in this case you'll need to create Commons:59th National Film Awards winners and place that in Commons:Category:National Film Awards winners. It's better to do it this way rather than have 60 categories of Film Awards winners. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 12:04, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Sure. That makes sense. Thanks for the inputs. - Vivvt • (Talk) 12:11, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Is something like this acceptable? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Plum or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tulip. This looks like a page/gallery itself with all related images. Can we make something like this? §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 05:08, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

That is exactly what I was suggesting to do, the Gandhi example above is a gallery like Plum and Tulip. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:16, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
That's good. Animesh, can you take up that task for today? I will be able to do it only at the EOD today otherwise. - Vivvt • (Talk) 11:15, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Oh! I din't see your link. Silly me! & Vivvt, I couldn't do that today. Was all busy. Will do that tomorrow. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 20:53, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
That's fine. I'm done. See here. - Vivvt • (Talk) 00:07, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Urgently need your help.

Hi, hope this finds you well. I would like to turn your attention to, and seek your help in serving what I believe would be justice in the Kerala article.

User:Ashley_thomas80 had tried to change the section name titled "Kerala in religious traditions" to "Kerala and Hindu Mythology" or something to that effect a couple of times in the past but was reverted by Admins. He has now caught hold of user User:Drmies who is working hand-in-glove with him whilst completely ignorant of the topic under debate. I would like to keep to myself as to what feelings motivate User:Drmies to do so.

Now coming to the point, for several months, the order in the aforementioned section was "chronological". I am not against the section being renamed as it has been. ButI thought the chronology issue was thrashed out months back between myself and a few other users - South Indian, non-South Indian Indian, American etc. We arrived, I thought then, at a consensus that the order could be chronological. The mention of the Malaya Mountains in the Matsya Purana was put first; the Mahabali legend second; and the Parasurama story third. That is the order that they occur in according all traditions in Hinduism.

Ashley (for reasons I believe know) wants to see the Parasurama legend mentioned first. Please kindly visit the revision history of the article and also read what I had written up on this in the Talk page for the same at - [[1]].

I would still re-list what I believe are wrong with the section :-

1) As I mentioned already, the order should be chronological.

2) There are vague/weasel wordings like The oldest of the surviving Puranas, the Matsya Purana, has a mention of Malaya Mountains of Kerala while it sets the story of Matsya

3) There is a rather illogical statement (more a geoscientific one) made by a conventional historian like Sreedhara Menon, that parts of Kerala were actually under the sea according to scholars, when any such thing is far from the truth according to modern science. In ANY event why should such a statement be included in a section devoted purely to mythology/legends/traditions?

Ashley has made a blasphemous comment that the Parasurama legend is more linked with Kerala than the Mahabali one. But to any non-Mallu/non-Keralite, can Kerala be without Onam, Onam without Mahabali, or Kerala without Mahabali. OTOH, I can vouch for that 90% of non-Mallus and non-Keralites would be totally ignorant of the Parasurama story. And then Drmies speaks of "consensus" when the only two people who have commented and are against me in this are AT and himself the latter being completely ignorant of the substance.

I hope I make sense to you and that you find my reasoning right. In any event I think the Mahabali story would be put before the Parasurama one at least. Please step in and help me here. SumerianPrince (talk) 18:20, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Discuss on the talk page with reliable sources. You are not helping your case by edit warring and speaking in abstract. —SpacemanSpiff 18:25, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
The sources added to the relevant portions of the article are reliable enough and nobody is doubting their veracity. I didn't even once speak about the sources.

My point is - to put it as shortly and simply as possible that - the order in the section should be chronological and not the way it is. It is a matter of opinion rather than the concerned sources being reliable or otherwise. Could you please have a look at the section I am talking about, my message on the talk page, and then weigh in there? SumerianPrince (talk) 19:08, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Would you mind weighing in your opinion: 1 and 2 Vensatry (Ping me) 10:10, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

It's unlikely to get deleted, if someone creates Nellikuppam Metropolitan Area that is either likely to be kept, merged or redirected with history intact. I find that participating in such debates is generally a drain on my time. good luck though! —SpacemanSpiff 18:10, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and the Thrissur one is a creation of Jpullokaran. I don't have time to investigate further right now, but the contribution history reeks of it, if you find any evidence of copyvios, (Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Jpullokaran), let me or Moonriddengirl know. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 18:19, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Over the next decade, there are possibilities that even a city like Vellore could have it's own Metropolitan area. I remember that not very long ago MikeLynch started a discussion on the article's talk page to make this a redirect to the parent article. Ultimately no consensus was made then. Encyclopaedia, indeed. Who would ever believe that? Fiddle Faddle (talk) 15:00, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I think the marketing folks did a good job by adding the "pedia" to the end of the name. Either ways, I think it's probably a more productive use of good editor's time to actually publish good articles on blogspot as they wouldn't have to go through the trouble of having to keep bovine and equine excrement from creeping in, and more importantly, they wouldn't have to justify keeping it out per XYZ policy which is some oft quoted but seldom applied edict. Good luck with your efforts though! cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 15:21, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
I treat this place as an amusing academic exercise in writing stuff that passes the rather arcane and unduly bureaucratic policies, procedures and guidelines. Category:Maratha people

Hi SpacemanSpiff!

Recently u deleted Category:Maratha people. I don't know why it was nominated and why it was deleted.

But I know one thing that Rajput and Jat are also castes like Maratha. If Category:Rajput people and Categoty:Jat people can exist, then what is the problem with Category:Maratha people ? Siddharthkumarwikipedia (talk) 14:26, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Please see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 July 17. —SpacemanSpiff 15:05, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

I have seen that discussion, but can't comment there as that discussion has closed now. If the template 'Category:Maratha people' was deleted because Maratha is a caste, then Category:Rajput people and Categoty:Jat people should also be deleted. Either both of these categories should also be deleted or 'Category:Maratha people' should be restored as wikipedia's policy should be same for all castes.

Can u please tell me whats the procedure for requesting restoration of 'Category:Maratha people' ? Siddharthkumarwikipedia (talk) 07:35, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Consensus on both the India project and at Categories for Discussion is not to have these categories. —SpacemanSpiff 08:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Consider this for deletion review and restore the page

Thanks & Regards, Manjunath — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.63.77.218 (talk) 12:04, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello, it was deleted via community discussion, so to restore the page, you'll have to submit a request at WP:DRV with new reliable source references to address the concerns from the past AfD. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 13:48, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Possible sock

Two articles of same genre List of accolades received by Pavitra Rishta and List of accolades received by Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi which were deleted under WP:CSD#G5 have been recreated recently by User:Srajput40. And they have created the first article as their very first edit with all formats used correctly. Can't be coincidence. I don't remember who the original creator was and hence can't file WP:SPI case.
This user is also creating articles of few production houses. Old sock User:Noor119848 has created many such. He is sock of Noormohammed satya. This could be him. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 13:29, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Looks possible, but as I'm not familiar, can you file an SPI? I'll watchlist the SPI and take admin action when needed. Once I'm familiar. Also, check out Rani300, that maybe linked too. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 13:48, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't know where to aim. Were the previous versions created by these Noors? Then i can file case under that master. And Rani seems independent of these. Noors work only on TV articles. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 14:21, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Yes, all Noors. One account Satya Noormohammed appears to be not blocked, so this is a bright target for SPI. As I've never come across this editor before, I'll need to familiarize myself before I can do any duck blocks, so an SPI would help now. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 03:49, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

removed Kashmiri Pandit category from Anupam Kher

Hi Spiff, you have removed the Kashmiri Pandit category from Anupam Kher. May I know the reason why ? -Ambar (talk) 16:42, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

It has consensus both at WP:INDIA and CfD to not categorize biographies (living or otherwise) by caste. The category should only include topics related to Kashmiri Pandits, excluding biographies. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:00, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. However, in case of Anupam Kher, he has specifically in recent times, acted as a voice for the Kashmiri Pandit comunity and taken up their cause for rehabilitation in the valley. -Ambar (talk) 18:25, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Also, Kashmiri Pandit is a community or a clan and can not be classified as a caste. It may be a part of a caste section, however the Kashmiri Pandits themselves are not a caste. So the CfD does not apply. Thanks. -Ambar (talk) 18:28, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Just one example of how you will find the Kashmiri Pandits always being referred to as a Community and not a caste. Check in this book. There are several others, but I believe you will understand the point.-Ambar (talk) 18:30, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, but no, this is the standard excuse, castes/clans and any other social group categories can not include biographies. If it does, the category will be deleted. —SpacemanSpiff 18:35, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, this is not an excuse, this is a fact. Where on WP:INDIA does it mention that communities can not be mentioned in biographies. Please provide the relavant link. Also, in case there is any article or credible source that mentions Kashmiri Pandits are a caste, then please provide that source. People who have clearly self identified themselves with the community must be included in the category. Anyways, I await your link to the India page article and then let me form my final opinion on this issue. -Ambar (talk) 08:35, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
All necessary links are at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_November_23#Category:Nair_people. Also, please remember that these edits are covered under WP:GS/Caste. —SpacemanSpiff 13:17, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
I read the logs and for now I see that there is a clear consensus. However, I plan to keep this discussion open, specially on grounds that all communities in India are now included in some type of social caste (or sub-caste) system. Hence, certain ethnic identities and social traits, which would otherwise be well categorised using communities such as Nairs or Jats or Kashmiri Pandits would now remain uncategorised. I would still say that its not the caste that is the issue but the discrimination that goes with unfair treatment of different sections. In essence, they are two completely different things. To further add to this, its not the mentioning of caste names that we should be fighting againsts, but the exploitation that is linked with its misuse. Its a typical case where we decide not to eat tomatoes just because half of them were rotten. Anyways, for now I respect the voting of the net community, of which I too am becoming an integral part. -Ambar (talk) 06:56, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Basically, I reported Justice007 to the Administrators' Notice Board because of Wikihounding me which started right after I supported deletion of Nandini Sahu, on the Articles for Deletion. I mentioned your exchange with Justice007 regarding civilty with other editors, which I believe he disregarded. Justice007 has a history of causing similar issues and perhaps it is time for a substantive intervention.--Juristicweb (talk) 12:41, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

I don't think it's ANI worthy right now as it's a very minor issue (unless some of the history is presented) that could be resolved on the talk page. Just for clarity though, I didn't comment on his civility (or lack thereof), just the validity of his AfD arguments. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:16, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

At the FLC it was pointed out that the citations, (written in all award rows, hidden ones) are copyvios. Per our norms of presenting quotes, all quotations are to be "used verbatim [and] must be attributed with quotation marks or other standard notation" and "a citation is required". Here they are verbatim, citations are present but not added after every quote to avoid WP:OVERCITE. Everything is sourced to the official catalogue.
Now adding quotation marks (in addition to current italics, title "Citation", separate row, hidden etc. which are actually enough ways to indicate separation) and citations (even with OVERKILL) is a possible way ahead. And its not a big deal. These two are tiny additions. But will they solve the problem here?
In recent few years jury of those awards have started being verbose and expressive and have given long quotes as compared to their previous ones like "For the subtle display of her wide range of emotions." Hence cutting short these quotations or picking some words from them is another way. But i personally would like to avoid that. It looses its value. The jury is quite accomplished than us and its better to keep their words as they are. Also i consider those citations to be the key feature of that article. That actually tells us why the award is presented.
What's your say? §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 04:37, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

If they are quoted, citations are required. As far as copyvio, I haven't seen the example(s) in this particular article, but if you don't quote and cite, then they are copyvios. Fair use would allow reasonable use, but they should be quoted, cited and shouldn't be a substantial part of the relevant content. —SpacemanSpiff 10:10, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
