Congratulations!

The Original Barnstar
For your excellent work at successfully rescuing Flag of India from FAR. Keep it up! Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 05:33, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, and congrats to you on Darjeeling! cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:26, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Nithyananda

Could you please explain this edit? I am not sure what you mean by "do not refactor other users posts". Cheers --vvarkey (talk) 20:40, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

You have no right to change other editors posts or titles. Stop your disruptive editing. —SpacemanSpiff 20:41, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
The title "Video" is ambiguous. There are many videos by Nithyananda floating around. The title needs to be more specific. And for God's sake, this is a Talk page. What do we need now, a Talk page about the Talk page? --vvarkey (talk) 20:47, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
That doesn't matter, you are NOT allowed to change other editors' posts. Simple. —SpacemanSpiff 20:49, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
This after supporting and removing large swaths of text from that talk page? Wow, I guess anyone can be an Admin. --vvarkey (talk) 20:51, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Why???

Hello there,,

The news of his sextape controversy is already finalized and revolving in the reputed news channels like Sun TV, Manorama etc. What else is needed for me to check for the correct source ? Millions of hits have been getting in the name of "Paramhamsa Nithyananda". I hope you are not talking in the sense of his devotee. Please give me a valuable reply. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shaunxavier (talkcontribs) 05:33, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Each statement has to be sourced. Currently all reliable news reports still use the term "alleged" and speculate on various bits and you have converted them to unsourced fact. That's not allowed. —SpacemanSpiff 05:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

to the spaceman

theyou are the one map in question is severely p.o.v. as it purports to project a view of history that seeks to warp the true view from a particular communal angle. You are the one who is being aggressive in this.If you were the one who put that map up,I intend to report you as an individual who is trying to exploit wiki for particular purposes.Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 07:34, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

you are being communal inyour approach and such communal approaches do not make for a good administrator.I am sorry but I have to report you to the appropiate authorities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 07:48, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Nothing communal in dealing with vandalism. —SpacemanSpiff 07:50, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

stop your communal agenda in wikipedia.I have already reported you on the discussion page and shall continue to level chaarge against you. on what grounds can you establish the validity of the said map?please give accurate citations. if you do not I shall be compelled to take actions about your administrator status. -skylark

p.s.: if you do block me i shall know you did not have logic to back up your action and resorted to power to silence criticism. if you can convince me why you consider my editing as vandalism with the correct historical cittions and data,I shall definitely retract from my position. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:15, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

It's up to you to show why the cited information and maps within the article are wrong. —SpacemanSpiff 08:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

well i have already done so in the discussion section.besides there are other far better maps of the empire in wiki itself-which are more accurate and ratified by prominent historians like j.n.sarcar,r.c. majumdaar etc. While being an administrator on a historicaal site I shall assume you have had good grounding in the field. So I shall not explain the importance of the above personnel to Indian history to you.Still,if you want you can cross-refernce those names from wiki itself. In the end please stop utilizing this excellent medium for narrow communal gains. There are other places to pursue such things. I trust, after the proper referencings you shall yourself remove the said map and install correct maps in its place.meanwhile I shall watch you.rest asured that pages on indian history get scanned by experts in the field regularly.-skylark —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:23, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

You have done no such thing. You have given an opinion. Provide reliable references and then we can discuss. —SpacemanSpiff 08:28, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

what exactly do you want as reference? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:31, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Verifiable references from reliable sources.   — Jeff G. ツ 08:32, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

how can one provide reference to something that is not true? and you vandalism seems to span the mughal empire site also as the old map there has been replaced as well.truely wiki has become unreliable and a dishonest source of information because of people like you.if this is the standard of historical scholarship that goes into the administraatorship of a history related article then its only a matter of time before wiki loses its credibility.-skylark. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:34, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

If you can not provide scholarly references for what you're saying, then those edits of yours haven't a place on Wikipedia. —SpacemanSpiff 08:39, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

the refernces are possible for a particular thing that does exist like an accurate map or an accurate article.but for something that is wrong and misplaced such referencing is absurd.what do you suggest in such cases?and meanwhile why don't you come up with references to the present map?are you a history scholar or are you not? -skylark. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:46, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Just click on the map and it takes you to the reference. And please stop creating new sections every time you write a post here, just add to the existing section. —SpacemanSpiff 08:48, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

on the latter i did not find a way to "add to earlier sections".by the way this is you talk page -right? so why are you offended by talk? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 08:54, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

this map shows tamil nadu, south karnataka, kerala, chattisgrh, eastern madhya pradesh, western orissa, jharkhand, kutch, garhwal, kumaon, himachal, ladakh and even NEPAL to be part of the "mughal empire" .this is beyond laughable.either you are doing this deliberately or you are full of sophistry.Anyways I shall point you out and raise questions about your integrity in the appropiate circles.rest assured.AND i believe you are no historian after all.even a third rate historian would have detected the discrpancy long ago.-skylark. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylark2007 (talkcontribs) 09:01, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Guduru Venkatachalam

Could you please take a look at Guduru Venkatachalam? Another editor created the article, possibly by cutting and pasting from another source. I tried to rescue the article after someone tagged it for speedy deletion, but I didn't do much. I suspect that the article should be moved to G. V. Chalam, but I am not sure. Thank you. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 06:01, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Looks notable, found a few sources; there's possibly some confusion with Gudipati Venkatachalam too (writer), so that must be cleaned out. I think a good part of the original article was a copy vio from here and possibly some mailing list, can't find the exact text, but it's clearly some formal communique. I'll probably stub it to sourced content. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:17, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Peter71947

Thanks for the opportunity to ask some questions.

I put up a page (Peter L Ryan) and it was marked for speedy deletion. What can I do to 'credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject' ?

I am creating a new page about the most famous person in my family tree (on my Talk page until I get it right - is this the right place?) 1. I inserted footnotes. The numbers appear in the text, but the footnotes don't appear. 2. Do I have to 'credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject’?

I am a slow learner. Thanks again. Peter

Peter71947 (talk) 06:15, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm guessing that the page that I deleted was about you. For an article about a person, we need it to satisfy certain notability criteria. The entire set is listed at WP:BIO. As for the other article you are creating, I would suggest that you do so at User:Peter71947/Leonard Shoobridge. You can copy over the content from your talk page to there. Once you've done that, add a new section at the bottom like: ==References==. In the next line add: {{reflist}} and the footnotes will show. I'm not sure that the person meets our notability guidelines, but once you create the new page and add all the references you have, I can take a look and provide you some feedback. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:24, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Colin Gonsalves

Hi. I have started an article on Colin Gonsalves. However, I am unable to expand the article and provide any more third party refs as a result of which the article may get deleted. So, I was wondering if you could include it in the WP:IND/UBLP. Thanks. Nilotpal42 (talk) 10:40, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

It looks like you've already added the refs and it's not unreferenced right now. I'll keep a watch on the article. —SpacemanSpiff 16:18, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Ranjitha

I am tempted to AFD the article, do you think she is notable? I don't see it, a bit part actor? Off2riorob (talk) 16:53, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

She is notable, acted a fair bit and has been reviewed. Online sources will be a bit difficult to come by as most of her films are pre online Indian newspaper archives. —SpacemanSpiff 16:55, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
had lead roles in atleast 10 films and 1 TV show. Does supporting roles now. can easily meet WP:ENT. I have a offline source (a tamil film glossary). will source from it.--Sodabottle (talk) 14:04, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I don't see where you get that she easily passes ENT, it can only be this...Has had significant roles in multiple notable films...a notable film by defenition would usually have its own film, I see it as marginal notability but I will leave it for a bit and see how it goes, the three bio links added today do also not assert any notability. Off2riorob (talk) 15:21, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I would suggest reading Tamil Cinema. She has had lead roles in ten Tamil films, films that get a theatrical releases in 1000 theatres; in a state with a population of 60 million (and a diaspora of another 10 million) . Covered and reviewed in multiple English and Tamil media outlets with circulation running in tens of millions. I would say it is more than enough to meet WP:FILM and WP:ENT easily. The films don't have their own articles yet in English wikipedia, because there are more than 5000 Tamil films that have been released since 1931. About 1200 of them have their own articles in english wikipedia - the newer ones (since 2000) automatically get their articles, but the pre-internet era ones don't get them as quickly, as news sources are offline. I am one of those adding articles for the older films, but it is going to take a long time covering them all (Tamil wikipedia has articles covering most of them). So it is not a case of notability but of coverage.--Sodabottle (talk) 15:52, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
WP:FILM is about films isn't it? Do you have a link to some of her films and her article on the Indian wikipedia? Anyway, no worries, I do understand that she is likely very notable in Tamil Nada and India in general, I once almost died of dysentery in Madras and I have been to a few Indian cinemas. Off2riorob (talk) 15:59, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
what happened? TD?--Sodabottle (talk) 16:26, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I lived with some untouchables in Kerala and had been drinking well water, it's a long time ago, it's bottled water for me now if I travel. Off2riorob (talk) 16:29, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Tamil films (especially pre-2000) aren't covered well on any of the wikis (or for that matter on IMDB), so using that as a yardstick for notable films isn't going to work. She would pass WP:Actor, and offline sources can be found. That said, I agree that it's a BLP and sources need to be found for the article to be kept. —SpacemanSpiff 16:47, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Sourced now.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:28, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
she is notable. "Aathi idhu vaathu koottam, paatha iva azhu mattam, potta oru attam pattam" --CarTick 17:34, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
man, that was a popular song at my school. the film sucked though.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:37, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I realise you are trying to help the article Soda but I don't see those citations you have added as asserting much at all, I am still tempted to send it to AFD, I don't know what has stopped me so far. Off2riorob (talk) 18:24, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Two interviews in The Hindu's aren't asserting much?. And i have added offline and online sources for her filmography, which say "heroine" clearly. Please take this to AfD, as i am thinking this is a clear of case of WP:BIAS and WP:IDONTLIKEIT. Atleast there i can try and explain how Tamil films meet WP:NF; lead role players in them meet WP:ENT and coverage in a newspaper with 600,000 circulation meets WP:GNG--Sodabottle (talk) 18:34, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I thank you for your accusations, I simply see her as a small time actor in a specific locality and of little true notabity. Off2riorob (talk) 18:45, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
go ahead and AFD it. I dont think u have a great knowledge of Tamil cinema anyway. let us debate at the AFD. i notice u went to India, if you dont mind sharing it with us, did u go to visit Swami nityananda by any chance? --CarTick 18:50, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Folks: Please keep this discussion on-topic: Ranjitha's notability and not on any editors/editor's experiences. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 18:52, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Rob, you are calling a state with 60 million population a "small locality". Now i know for sure my earlier accusation is correct. Please take it to AfD. --Sodabottle (talk) 18:58, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey! Vkrohit rohit (talk · contribs) moved the Salman Khan page and created an unnecessary redirect. I cannot fix it. ShahidTalk2me 10:26, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Will delete it. Next time you can just move it back and tag the resulting redirect as {{db-r3}}. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:47, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
This was a bigger mess than I imagined, he has created numerous POV forks of a single article and stuff like that. —SpacemanSpiff 16:59, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Can you review his edits at Vishnu ? Also see exchanges on my and Cutno (talk · contribs) talk pages. (What a waste of time!) Abecedare (talk) 22:23, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. The page may need to be semi-protected too if he follows up on his threat to use and meatpuppets. I'll drop you a note again, if that is needed. Abecedare (talk) 22:39, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I just added the page to my watchlist, so I'll keep a lookout for anything fishy. Did you see the above exchange (some of it reverted) reg. the Mughal era map? A sourced map that's no different from that in Brittanica or Encarta. Some invective was also posted on Talk:History of India that SBC-YPR reverted. Sigh. —SpacemanSpiff 22:43, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
No, I missed that drama even though I have History of India and your talk page on my watchlist. Saw Special:Contributions/Skylark2007 only now - another "truthsayer" by the looks of it. Abecedare (talk) 23:06, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
Frankly File:Mughals.gif is fr from ideal (looks quite "cartoonish" and doesn't specify source or time period being depicted). Maps like the ones at [1] or [2] would be better. Perhaps F&f would be able to locate and/or scan some good maps for the article, when he returns. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 23:17, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
This map (see bottom right inset) from A Historical Atlas of South Asia is what we really need. Unfortunately it's copyrighted, so we'll need to find another source or someone will need to redraw. Abecedare (talk) 23:24, 6 March 2010 (UTC) Note: Direct inks doesn't work; just go here and look under Mughal Period -> pg 46. Abecedare (talk) 00:10, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
The one on Mughal Empire is better and has the source included. The Britannica map for 1700 is actually closer to the History of India one in shape (below Kaveri extent). I'm not sure how you create a map without actually copying it, so I guess someone can actually do it. But this one from Commons is the best I've found so far. —SpacemanSpiff 23:37, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
I found and uploaded a PD map at File:India in 1700 Joppen.jpg. Have also uploaded 3 other maps from Historical Atlas of India. The 1700 map seems to match the Brittanica map quite well except for the possession of Malabar - haven't checked if that region was conquered by the Mughal between 1700-07, or if the difference is a matter of difference in interpreting whther the Mughals actually controlled that region. ideally we'd want something like the Britannica map that shows the empire at different points in time, but hopefully the Joppen map is an improvement over the previous one. Abecedare (talk) 00:10, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Definitely better, although it's a bit difficult to read (possibly just the old paper that was scanned!). This gives the different stages, but it's not as clear on the sub-kingdoms etc. Stein says that part of the Malabar and Tamil kingdom were under Mughal control, no map though. —SpacemanSpiff 00:21, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, no. You have repeatedly engaged in disruption. The Mayurasia account remained unblocked for a longer duration only because you were discussing with two other editors. However, that just proved to be a waste of their time as the exact same behavior that led to earlier blocks was repeated. Checkuser confirms that all accounts use the same IPs, and all accounts also perform the exact same edits, so this is an easy one. —SpacemanSpiff 07:13, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I don't know what is the purpose of this user on wikipedia. But recently, he has removed all my work on Vellalar without any reason; in the talk page, he asked me a (out of topic) question and gave himself an answer (in tamil) which I don't understand. I'm spending time on wikipedia to write articles like this (I have not finished it yet, still (many) things to add, complete) by using good refs (which I searched & found). I'm a very busy person. I don't appreciate people like him who come and remove all I have done to put instead their POV without no proper ref or fake external links to POV websites such as Tamilnation.org (which doesn't exist anymore). Please have a look on this guy. Thanks.Rajkris (talk) 00:39, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

It explains exactly why the article you have repeatedly created will get deleted on sight. The statements you had in the article (and I'm not going to repeat them here) are clearly defamatory per reasonable standards. Please note that Wikipedia has a high standard of sourcing for biographies of living persons and will not tolerate unsourced defamatory content; repeat violations will result in a block.—SpacemanSpiff 04:01, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Deleting edits in talk page

"That doesn't matter, you are NOT allowed to change other editors' posts. Simple." Whay my edits are being deleted from this page?  Tharikrish  21:58, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

You've been amply warned, so don't feign ignorance. —SpacemanSpiff 22:08, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
You defend a page which logically qualifies for CSD. Tharikrish  19:34, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

why delete The cannaband article

As I was told to do so at their show tonight, I googled Cannaband to find a link to a wikipedia article, only to discover that you have deleted the article! Why? The cannaband is well known in music circles in Chicago and I personally find them to be fantastic. please reinstate the article and allow fans of the cannaband to develop an article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.188.55 (talk) 10:06, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

The kind of content you had is NOT acceptable. See WP:CSD#G10. —SpacemanSpiff 16:29, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Though I did not write the page, I do not think the content of the page violates the code you cited. It is not disparaging or an attack on the band or its members. Moreover, the Cannaband is a legitimate band in the Chicago area. Please consider allowing the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.188.55 (talk) 18:34, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, no. The page I deleted was clearly unacceptable, if you wish to contest that you can take it to WP:DRV (I will not post defamatory content on my talk page, even to quote). The article was deleted once before that, and that was based on WP:CSD#A7 by User:Dlohcierekim and I concur with that deletion as the article did not provide any indication of notability. I can userfy that content to the creating user, but if you'd like to contest that deletion and restore it in mainspace, I'd suggest you contact User:Dlohcierekim. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 18:45, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Creating biographical entries in Wikipedia

Thanks for the information. You are a very patient person. I've been reading through all the issues that people have. Keep up the good work.

Actually, I'm not Peter L Ryan - the subject of the page you deleted. He has less computer experience, and signed up as a user, wanting to put up pages about himself and his ancestors. He then asked me to get it sorted for him. We hope to be able to show that the article (on new sub-page) on Leonard Woolbridge meets notability guidelines. Peter71947 (talk) 03:06, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Good work so far. I think we need some more references to establish notability. The article as it stands is unlikely to be deleted by speedy deletion but it is still a candidate for the longer Articles for Deletion process. Here are some things that'll help establish notability:
  • Is the obituary a paid insert or an editorial obituary?
  • I see that he is linked from Book of Bodley Head Verse which definitely helps, but there's no reference within that article to talk about the extent of his contribution, that kind of information will be helpful.
  • I added a bibliography section, you can add other books in the same format. I found one more unique book at Worldcat, but it appears to be an ebook. If you can find the published history of that book, that'll help.
  • If you can find reviews like this and paraphrase that in your own words that'll help. I have added a sentence sourced to the New York Times. If you can use that format for any newspieces you reference that'll be good.
  • The article also has to be rewritten a little to exclude extraneous details and converted from a list of dates to continuous prose. See George Edward Brett for an example of an article with similar level of content.
Hope this helps. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 07:00, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Tibetan Buddhism

Wonder if you follow this a bit as well as Hinduism. Stuff like New Kadampa Tradition and Kelsang Gyatso, breakaways from the Dalai Lama, have been for about two years been taken over by two SPAs who are adherents and who engage in hagiography from non-indept sources all the time. One of them is actually a NKT website admin, apparently YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 01:34, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya

Dear Spaceman Spiff, Helli! Namaste! I received your message about my edits on Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya. The names of famous teachers are not having any links right now, but I intend to create them. The name of society running this school is Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, and the earlier name was wrong. Shikshan Prasarak Mandali does not have a wiki associated with it. But (wornlgly spelt) Shikshana Prasarak Mandali has a wiki and I linked it to that. BTW, I need to learn how to delete the wrong a from the word of Shikshana I mean the original wiki should be Shikshan Prasarak Mandali. Can u pls help? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Prasadsovani (talkcontribs) 06:57, 11 March 2010 (UTC) Warm wishes -Prasad —Preceding unsigned comment added by Prasadsovani (talkcontribs) 06:52, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Ok, please be aware of our notability guidelines listed at WP:BIO. If the subjects (teachers) don't meet those guidelines, the articles are likely to be deleted. Do you have any reference that the school is run by the Mandal (for the change you made)? I have moved the page to the spelling you said is right, although I'll say that you need to add some reliable source references to that article. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 07:23, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Prasadsovani (talk) 11:03, 11 March 2010 (UTC) Hi again, I studied in that school (NMV) and know for sure that it belongs to S P Mandali and not the other name Maharashtriya ... I surfed the web and found that the Mandali has indeed changed its name from Shikshan Prasarak Mandali to add 'a' at the end of Shikshan and Prasarak. I even called their phone and asked when did they change the spelling, but the lady answering did not know that. However, peole searching wikipedia may still type without the 2 a's. so I would request you to retain the name without a's or add redirects. The website of the governing body is http://www.spmandali.org/ and the list of institutes is visible on http://www.spmandali.org/institutes.htm I am sorry if I caused you any trouble. I am a novice in wikipedia and am learning. I read the links sent by you WP:BIO and have a clearer idea as to what might be notable. Warm regards and thanks for your time -Prasad

No problem, Wikipedia can be difficult for a new editor. Verifiability through reliable sources is a very important policy though, so follow that and you can learn other things as you edit. cheers.—SpacemanSpiff 15:55, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Hola!

Is that you one the left? Work harder! Do more!

Hey Spiffy, my fave admin, how are things? I have two questions for you--one for you as a person with a weird background, and one for you as a geek. First: if you know anything about the English educational system, can you find the proper categories and talk page templates for Villiers High School? I just don't know that well enough. Second: recently, that whole nice row of buttons above my edit screen (including that handy refcite button that you directed me to), it disappeared, and reappears only when I leave Beta. Any clue? Thanks! And while you're working for me, I got a load of laundry that needs to be hung up. Drmies (talk) 02:48, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

(edit conflict)I think I've added the applicable cats and WP tags. No washing sarees for me, so I'll skip the laundry. And here I was thinking you were liberal, and to prove me wrong, you go about stereotyping: Indian + in the US = geek. I have no idea about these things, I tried beta once and it screwed up a lot of things, so I went back to using my normal interface, no point trying to fix something that ain't broken, although that goes against Wikipedia philosophy! BTW, I see that you still haven't created WP:Sow and WP:Swine blue linked, are you going to do something about it? —SpacemanSpiff 03:37, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Haha, so wrong! I assumed you were a geek because you told me about that refcite in the first place! But this is so weird--it's all of a sudden, on my laptop, my PC, and my PC at work, that those buttons disappeared. Drmies (talk) 03:41, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

It appears to be a long-term dispute reg a few players, from what I see in the history. The protection does not endorse any particular version, just was similar to the version before the dispute started. —SpacemanSpiff 15:57, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Criteria for "notable players" at Left-arm orthodox spin

I have grabbed this question (which had just become an ANI thread though IMO unnecessary) and put it to you. Should there be stricter criteria for "notable"? It has spawned from a discussion about a Bangladeshi player but it begs bigger questions. Do we have a guideline/consensus to stop such debates from arising? Please hop over to the talk page to give an opinion. Cheers SGGH ping! 11:06, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't aware of any guideline for these articles "in general", but this appeared to follow some standard form until early January when the dispute began, therefore I fully-protected for two weeks in the hope that the talk page discussions would resolve the issue. I meant to leave a message at WT:CRIC but seem to have forgotten that bit. I don't have any opinion on what the criteria for inclusion should be, so it's unlikely that I'll be of any value in a discussion. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 15:57, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Help with Srirangam

I seem to be in a edit war with User talk:Srirangam99 over Chola Dynasty. He has a history of OR and synthesis (and has been blocked by yellowmonkey in the past for edit warring in Chola articles). He is putting in synthesis statements like he used to do before (his refs dont support what he is adding). I have already reverted him twice. Can you take a look?--Sodabottle (talk) 16:11, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Arvind and I tried explaining policy to him before and had reverted some source misinterpretation. See the talk page of the article as well as User talk:Vadakkan for a background of the discussions. I'd hold off a bit on reverting, explain on the talk page and then do the reverts. There were some other issues in the past too, including some mediation (in the talk page archives). —SpacemanSpiff 17:23, 18 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. i have explained it to him in his talk page. I will wait and see what he does. The old archives are amusingly frightening. He seems like a broken record going on and on. And he has been doing this for two years!!--Sodabottle (talk) 17:27, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Help over Sourav Ganguly's page

Sir This is me who tried to add in Sourav Ganguly's page that he is the sixth best ODI batsman and you reverted it replying the reference I provided doesn't have his name. THe line of my reference reads like this "Besides Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar [ Images ] (8) and Sourav Ganguly [ Images ] (6) were the other two Indian batsmen in the list for their exploits in the Test and one-day arena respectively." I think you didn't watch the page carefully as it clearly mentions his name in the table under heading "One-day Batsmen:"

One more thing MAHARAJ doesn't stand for PRINCE it means KING. If you have a doubt you can crosscheck it over any Hindi dictionary.

I think you should go through it as I don't intend to waste the time of yours but certainly the two two things that I noticed are correct... I here give you the link of page that counts him the sixth best ODI batsman... Plz see in the table given below the article. http://www.rediff.com/cricket/2002/dec/13wisden.htm
Regards,
Nitish
Nitish.game (talk) 04:47, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

On the sixth rank, you didn't provide a reference. I found the rediff list which didn't include him as sixth. I didn't find this new ref that you've provided now which is why I reverted asking you for the reference, so go ahead and add it with the reference.
On the "prince" vs "king", what's mentioned in the article is the intent of his parents when they nicknamed him, not the dictionary definition. The associated reference says that he was named Maharaja because his parents wanted the equivalent of prince. That's what matters in this case.
Hope this helps. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 04:57, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
OK ....thanks for your time...
Nitish.game (talk) 05:03, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I saw that Ganguly's page is not having his T20 and IPL records when I tried to add it didn't take the fifth column. IPL is the only tournament of International image which he is currently playing so I think his IPL and T20 stats should be. Can u tell me how to put that data as I have the very recent from reliable source that is IPL official web site. If you can just tell me how to add that..
Regards,
Nitish
Nitish.game (talk) 14:51, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

This has been discussed at WT:CRIC before and it was decided not to add IPL for articles where the remaining columns are already in use. Five is the max, and the five that are most important are included. —SpacemanSpiff 17:05, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
As u say...Thnx :) Nitish.game (talk) 02:55, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello Sir!! this is me once again. First of all sorry for so many posts in one day. But here again I noticed in Sourav Ganguly's page that under the heading "2000–2005: Ascension to captaincy and accolades" it has been mentioned that Ganguly didn't come to toss with Adam Gilchrist and some more stuff...Under the head "2006–2007: Comeback and rift with Greg Chappell" some more such incidents have been given. The ref link which has been given in these points lead to an Australian Newspaper "The Age" and a book on "Adam Gilchrist". Now, you see the Indo-OZ cricket has always been the more than just cricket, it has been the war of words and many times the media of both the countries has criticized each other's players, teams, grounds and management. So, I here doubt the neutrality of this page. If such remains the case I can provide with so many reference links of Indian newspapers and News Channels(even the respected ones) which see the whole incident with different point of view. Therefore, this article is not providing a neutral view. Even in Ganguly's biographies it has been mentioned that many see him as an arrogant person but he is not. Since I am new here on wiki, I just ask you to check this as you are an established user.

Thank You,

Nitish Nitish.game (talk) 04:38, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

This has all been discussed on Talk:Sourav Ganguly, so I'd suggest that you read through those discussions. And if you have any new points to add, you can add them there as it will attract more opinions from editors who have an interest in the topic. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:24, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Also, I just undid your updated articles change on WP:CRIC. That section is for "major" updates, not minor ones like addition of a few sentences as was the case in the Ganguly article. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:30, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh but I did make some major changes. I added his present situation in KKR. THe article was reading only about the second season of IPL that he was eliminated as a captain but he is the captain for this season. In third season many changes have been made in KKR including captaincy. That I guess is quite enough.....but still as U say...Nitish.game (talk) 05:46, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
No, these don't qualify as major changes. A major change is when a stub class article is expanded significantly to a B-Class or GA-Class and so on. This is just minor additions in a comprehensive article. Every day a lot of articles are updated with more content, and that section doesn't list them. It's only to draw attention to significant stuff. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:49, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

Vellalar

Hi, Rajkris has added everything pertaining to the Velir (there is a separate page for velir) in the vellalar page. Velir were chiefs of Velalar just as velalar were chiefs of paraiyar. By the same reasoning will he agree if i merge paraiyar and velalar page? What is the use of adding more and more info. about velir when the underlying hypothesis is wrong. Like vadivelu says, Building strongu but basement weaku, LOL. Summa, he is Tamil only. Look at his edits. I think Sri lankan tamil. Sasisekar (talk) 05:00, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, but someone has to clean up after your POV edits. e.g. "This edit". You say "Some of Pandyan kings are said to have belonged to the Maravar tribe" and the reference you supply states: "It is unlikely that the Pandya was of Marava lineage". So, please stop this bit of google mining to find two words together and paste them in as a reference. —SpacemanSpiff 05:05, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
It says, "is it unlikely" not "it is unlikely"[6]. The author is supporting they are maravar. Here is another one [7]. Pandyas are said to be maravar. Sasisekar (talk) 05:26, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
I apologize for my error. However, it is still source mining; the response to that question is not available and you have used it to support your statement and that has got to stop, all that's clear from the ref right now is that the Maravas were of Panday [kingdom], not that the Pandya [kings] were of Marava lineage. Using google search strings as references should not be done. —SpacemanSpiff 05:39, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Ok, apology accepted. I will just use the other link I gave. That says the ancient Pandyan kings were said to be from the Maravar caste. This is what everyone is doing, but they just add the reference in a fancy way quoting page numnber, notes etc. I just gave a direct link. I will add the books going forward. Sasisekar (talk) 05:47, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
From my point of view, Indian/Pakistani caste related articles in Wikipedia are a continuation of the daily struggle to upgrade the social status of many of these people back home. They use Wikipedia s a forum for POV, OR and worse. So I got out of trying to keep an eye and started creating their versions for Sri Lankan Tamils/Sinhalese as we have a plethora of mainstream sources that explains who the caste members are in Sri Lanka. Also Sri Lankan’s in general because of a lack of a strong caste prejudice both Sinhalese and Tamils are not driven mad by the trivial details of the caste as long as it is properly cited. Currently there is a concerted effort to show that Vellalar are some how related Velir. There is no evidence that Velirs existed at all, only from songs in Sankam litearure that some people think may have been a hoax. Although I personally don’t believe that it is a hoax but it goes on to show that to put all the egg in that basket is misleading. Then that party also wants to assure that Vellars came from North India because Velirs supposedly did, this particular view has to been seen through the politics of DMK and its reaction amongst the FC. So I give up Taprobanus (talk) 16:45, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
True, but I was hoping you'd have time to give it a look-in:) I already told one editor Rajakris that his referencing and synthesizing is not acceptable. I'll just add the tags to the article and leave it at that. I don't have the time right now to clean it up, but at the same time, not everything in the article is bad, so just removing content is not going to be helpful either. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 18:34, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
i didnt want to sound synical, i will work on it with time permiting within the next 2 yeras. it is on my list to bring to ga status at some point. Taprobanus (talk) 23:40, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
I tend to be cynical about most of these articles, so that's no different :) But it could do with some de-synthesizing and I'm not sure I can do that. Hopefully, sometime these will get done. —SpacemanSpiff 00:03, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Yogi

Hi, I saw the reverts and was kind of expecting it to happen, which is why I didn't do more work on the article, although I did decide that it was already a fair bit better after my edits. When the article is stable I was going to do a little more work there, I decided the obituaries may as well stay for now and the footnotes although a bit excessive could be looked at perhaps by someone more knowledgeable about the subject and that just leaves a few uncited comments that are a bit contentious which I will consider removing, let me know if you see any major issues still left to look at, regards. Off2riorob (talk) 10:05, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

I've posted on WT:INB too to see if any editors can take a look at it. I've always found that removing anything from the article results in an edit war, but I'll try to keep an eye out since you've managed to cleanse it a bit. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 20:34, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

well, i want to add the blog www.thekarna.wordpress.com to external links of karna page ,i'm a co-author of that blog, so i have the copy rights of that particular blog, you can check my name there in the blog (my name is gandherva) , which is an information blog about karna ,there are lot of stories there, also users can debate , we also post there poems of karna (from mahabharat there ),then this is non profitable blog , we only do that to provide information about karna to people of the world, our aim and policy is similar to wiki, you can go there and check if you want to,the blog is only created before a week, within a short period of time so many information have been added up, we also plan to do several things on karna , like karna website, albums (we try to tell story in the form of a song ), animations , drawings ...etc , What we don't have is that the power of advertisement , we want wiki to add this blog as an external link in the karna page , i want to seek your permission and support for doing this, if you tell that i break any rules by posting it , do tell what it is and also tell if anything can be done to add this blog to the external links , i will be ever thankful to you if you can help me Your's truly Executore (talk) 10:16, 24 March 2010 (UTC)executore

Copyright is not the issue. See WP:RS, WP:COI and WP:SPAM. Wikipedia is not the place to tell your story and promote your blog. —SpacemanSpiff 14:57, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

But this is not my story or my blog ,i'm not karna , this is about the historical character,is it like no blogs can be linked to wikipedia or so , you said several article but i don't understand which rule or rights i break by posting this .As wikipedia provides information about karna, we also provide the same , can you please explain where i breaks the rule, is it like no blogs are allowed to link to wikipedia ,or only blogs from wordpress or anything like that thanks Executore (talk) 15:17, 24 March 2010 (UTC)executore

Blogs in general are not allowed. Exceptions are when they are on a reputable site such as The New York Times or The Hindu. —SpacemanSpiff 15:19, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Heh, thanks. The name seems to put me under "extra visibility" :) —SpacemanSpiff 19:47, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
That's because everyone loves Calvin and Hobbes. SilverserenC 19:50, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

OK I Will improve this article . I Will make sure writes fake thing in this article . If i don't improve this article i will delete it . --Simy2j (talk) 02:46, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

It's not a question of improving. We normally don't have articles on future films, and this one doesn't appear to be an exception to the rule. If you can show that it passes the notability criteria, then I'll gladly remove the prod. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 02:50, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

U May delete this article . —Preceding unsigned comment added by Simy2j (talkcontribs) 03:07, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, there are more than two Contributors to the article, so I can't just delete it per your request. Let the AfD happen, there may be someone who can dig up some details for notability. If not, someone will close the debate to delete the article at the end of a week. —SpacemanSpiff 03:12, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Congrats

Hi, I just noticed that you've become an admin during the time I was away from Wikipedia. So very belated congratulations, and hope you're enjoying your new responsibilities. :-) Shreevatsa (talk) 05:41, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, but I think commiserations is more appropriate! Glad to see you're back, I was just wondering to Abecedare when you'd be back -- a few weeks back he'd given me the link to your Devanagari translator as I was complaining about google. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:51, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, I have been (and still am) trying to stay away, but I'm not always successful. :-) Shreevatsa (talk) 05:56, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Well, when you're around, maybe you can create a few stubs on Carnatic music compositions :) I've been meaning to for a while, but just haven't gotten to it.—SpacemanSpiff 06:02, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Wouldn't they just be deleted? :-) (BTW, there seem to be a few existing ones: Raghuvamsa Sudha, Krishna Ni Begane Baaro, etc. We need to find sources to say anything at all about them, I think.) Shreevatsa (talk) 19:13, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
I think I need to get a couple of decent books on compositions. See this for a list of bios that I think need to be completed soon, just too tied up do anything! —SpacemanSpiff 19:27, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Parent categories

Do you know a script/bot that will go through all members of a category and remove parent categories from them? I removed Category:Carnatic music from a bunch of articles that were in Category:Carnatic Ragas, but it's a waste of time and I noticed that most of them are in Category:Ragas as well. :-) Shreevatsa (talk) 20:39, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

You can use WP:AWB to do that (only on PC). I had to uninstall from my work PC so I can't do it. It'll take just a few minutes, all you'd need to do is create a list on AWB using Category:Carnatic Ragas and run it to remove the parent cat. If you don't have PC, you could ask User:CarTick to help out when he runs it next. —SpacemanSpiff 21:01, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Flag of India BIS Standards

All of the Flag of India standards, IS 1, IS 300 and IS 400 can be bought at http://www.standardsbis.in/Gemini/home/Home.action. However, the problem that I run into is that since I am an American (with pretty much no Indian ancestry or relatives), I will be charged 1900 INR (about 41 USD) per document. If an Indian gets them, it would be 190 INR (or 4 USD). Can you or other Indian Wikipedians with PayPal account can get the documents? (I ask for PayPal because I can send money to people that way to compendate them). User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 06:41, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

I'm not in India either and don't have an India CC, but let me check if I can get the doc some other way. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:39, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Alright, it just easier now to do it. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 18:04, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Bias

You are displaying a bias. The article had used the BC/AD for a long time. The change to BCE/CE was not justified--neither is your warning. If my edits are subjected to a warning and reversal, why did you not do the same to the person who edited it to the BCE/CE version in 2/2009? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.218.182.143 (talk) 22:40, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Admin abilities

Here is your "only warning," I will edit the page one more time, if you attempt to reverse that or attempt to misuse your powers as an administrator, I will seek intervention from Wikipedia AND I will seek to have your Admin ability removed. It clearly states that admins must not make decisions with a bias. You, according to the link you sent me, are displaying a bias. And article that originally displayed BCE/CE should not be change to BC/AD and vice versa. This article used the BC/AD style until someone changed it last year. (68.218.182.143 (talk) 22:50, 27 March 2010 (UTC))

These have been discussed before on various articles, so stop your disruption.—SpacemanSpiff 23:30, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
The rules per Wikipedia are clear, and you are abusing your Admin abilities. Per WP:ERA,you are not to "change from one style to another unless there is substantial reason for the change." No substantial reason was given, nor was this discussed for this article. I fully intend to pursue the removal of your admin abilities. Wikipedia made this rule, and you have NO authority to circumvent the rule. (68.218.182.143 (talk) 23:44, 27 March 2010 (UTC))

BMS

Hi, why do you think I m violating wikipedia's policy, And wat neutral point are you talking about, there are references provided everywhere for it, Its not my personal opinion. I had put those images which were thoroughly my work. All over the country and a few selected foreign countries which has foreign exchange program for students; they atleast would get an idea about the culture and get to see the campus. Tell me what's wrong in it..? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sujaybagi (talkcontribs) 03:41, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

For starters, all your additions to that article have made it appear like an advertisement. Read how to contribute to articles at WP:MFA and follow the links to WP:NPOV, WP:Advert. Also, do not remove maintenance templates.—SpacemanSpiff 03:49, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Insane Clown Posse

Nice dog. Amazing I've never posted here before. In any case, there's something going on with that article, I'm sure you've seen it too. Probably needs some protection. Shadowjams (talk) 07:30, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Just edit conflicted with Bongwarrior on protection. Seems to be a very odd case of vandalism, likely some off-wiki thing. Yeah, with all the edit conflicts/AfD participations I've had with you, I think it's strange we've never posted on each other's tp so far! cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 07:34, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Unhappy with deletion of article/page despite having followed all guidelines and submitted supporting materials.

Re: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Parichay_(Singer/_Producer) Why was this page deleted when clearly a letter to donate copyrighted material that met all your guidelines was submitted on time? Below, is a copy of that letter sent from an associated email of the website/webpage in question. FYI - I own the copyright of the material your bot considered an infringement of copyright. Looking forward to your response.

Apology

Hi, there is something needs to be clarified and, now that the picture is virtually complete, I wish to apologise to you for a misunderstanding that arose because of information I received from a well-meaning person who was mistaken.

You may have noticed that I have had my problems with an individual using dynamic IP addresses. If not, don't worry and I won't bore you with the turgid details. Someone who I will not name contacted me by e-mail and provided some contributions info which seemed to indicate that SGGH may be the person who has been chasing me around. Unfortunately, I reacted to this and put a sarcastic comment into the Blackmore AfD, this comment potentially implicating three people including yourself.

Fortunately, I was then contacted by someone else who rightly asked what the hell I was doing and, in the ensuing discussion, pointed out that the real culprit is the former HampshireCricketFan, whom I had totally forgotten. I was one of a few people who got him blocked last year because of abusive edits. This person then appeared, right on cue, in the Blackmore AfD and the argument has spilled over into admin discussion pages. But it has solved the mystery and I now know who has been trying to cause trouble.

It remains for me to unreservedly apologise to you for any embarrassment or inconvenience that I may have inadvertently caused you. ----Jack | talk page 12:05, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

I quite honestly haven't been following this hounding/dispute bit except for semi-protection of a couple of articles, so I actually didn't read anything much into your posts, no harm done. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:52, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

10:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Shyamsunder (talk)== Greetings ==

Greetings SpacemanSpiff. I see that you were online a moment ago and want to ask you to check out the Herb Ellis article. There's a Facebook-based rumour that Ellis died yesterday, and a series of editors have been adding the "news". I have been monitoring the major news agencies and several US- and UK-based newspapers since it first appeared and none of them make any mention of it. I have put a "threatening" hidden message on the article to dissuade editors from adding it without a reliable source, but am wondering if maybe I have "gone over the top". Don't worry 'bout answering me - I'd rather you spent your time doing other stuff, but please keep an eye out on that article. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 21:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Watchlisted, will protect if it gets ugly. BTW, I should probably know this, but how do you see if someone is online? cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 21:51, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Cheers! Re. your BTW, don't worry, no tricks. After spending ages checking out different possibilities of reporting incidents and still not understanding a damn word - don't get me started on the subject of how easy-to-use Wikipedia is - I just popped in at the revision history of Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism to see who was active at that time and jumped at the first name I recognised. Sorry to drag you into this, but with such a high-profile name, what can you expect? :) Cheers, again - and thanks for being out there!--Technopat (talk) 22:07, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Ah ok, I thought there was some gadget somewhere that showed who was online at what point in time and stuff, that would be both creepy and helpful. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 22:31, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Nah, the nearest I've actually come across is the voluntary {{UserStatus}} for user pages, but I wouldn't rule out the other creepy/helpful possibility. I've also thought it would be useful when "stalking" a vandal who I've slapped a final warning on and having to sit up waiting to see if s/he makes another move. Technologically, it must be a doddle...--Technopat (talk) 23:00, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
The news has been picked up by the Post now - [8], although it's a blog, I think it's reliable enough. —SpacemanSpiff 23:22, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Yep, thanks. The writer specifically states that Ellis' son confirms it. I've pasted a "recent death" template on the article. Thanks for keeping an eye out. --Technopat (talk) 23:45, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Can you please look at Category:Delhites of Oriya ancestry It seems an inappropriate cat.10:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)~~

I'll take a look over the next couple of days and provide feedback on the talk page. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 07:55, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Done. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:24, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

What do you think of the draft in terms of content and sourcing (style issues can always be fixed later)? Is the page ready to be moved to mainspace or does it need to be culled some more ? Abecedare (talk) 15:41, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Done. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:24, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks SpacemanSpiff for your review and help, cleanup in accordance to your two concerns is done...if editors like you and Abecedare will work on India articles then surely in near time we'll have all A class Indian articles...thanks again-- Last Emperor (talk) 07:09, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
