Speedy Deletions

Please leave me a talk back notice. I am obviously having trouble understanding the speedy process. I have used the templates to consider articles for speedy, but apparently I am using the wrong ones. Is it fair to say that an article could be a candidate for a speedy deletion but be denied because the wrong template was used? Is it best to use a boiler template, or use the "deletebecause" template? I realize that this information is available somewhere, but every time I find it I become confused.

Thank you for you help.keystoneridin! (talk) 07:07, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Please read criteria for speedy deletion. Incorrect templates are a problem, but not all topics are eligible for speedy deletion. Also, read WP:BEFORE for what to do before you take a topic to AfD. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 07:13, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi!

I understand that secondary schools are generally notable, but my reason for the PROD was two-fold:

  1. The entire article's text is Guru Nanak Public Senior Secondary School is a School situated in Mandi Mullanpur, Ludhiana district, Punjab.
  2. I tried to find reliable sources of information for the school, but all I could find were mentions about former pupils basically saying "abc went to school at Guru Nanak Public Secondary School".

If you check the talk page for the creator of the page (Pavanubhi), you'll see that I advised them to find reliable sources of information.

I even looked at AEPAM's website (The Government of Pakistan's Ministry of Education) but their list of districts (Punjab Schools) do not include Ludhiana - and a quick check using Google search of their website revealed a few Guru Nanak schools, but none of them were obviously the above school.

When I put up a PROD, it is never without doing some research!

However, as you are a way more experienced editor than I am, I'll bow to your wisdom! If you could find a way to help the creator of this article find more reliable sources of information (or know where to direct them!) I'd be very grateful.

Regards, -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 19:48, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

We generally give high schools a fair bit of leeway in terms of notability, something I found out after I PRODded a high school as it wasn't verifiable. This one is verifiable per this, this and the link already included in the article. Your search would not have returned any results because the school is in India and not Pakistan. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 19:59, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying that! I continue to learn new stuff on Wikipedia - and not just through the article! Regards -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 21:46, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Bombay Sisters

The article looks good to me. I'm going to be bold and send an email to the contact on their website asking for a free picture. Hekerui (talk) 21:57, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

To make it sound official I use a variation of the Example requests for permission for images. Hekerui (talk) 23:18, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Thx, will use that. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 23:25, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

I think I got everything straightened out between those two pages now. The history prior to March 15, 2007 came from the vandalized page. As you can see from My log it took several steps to fix. Hopefully everything is in order now. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:48, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Perfect, thanks. I'll try to clean up the article today. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 20:40, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Deprodding Richard Bachman (disambiguation)

I deproded this article because it is a valid disambiguation page. I am well within my right to remove the page per WP:PROD. If you feel that the article should be deleted still, take it to AFD.keystoneridin! (talk) 19:51, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Very well. I never questioned your right to remove a PROD! I just question the need for the page. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 20:09, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I sent it to AfD, partially due to the snarky comment, but mostly because Spaceman is correct that the page serves no valid purpose. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Richard Bachman (disambiguation) --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:41, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
  • I am glad that you choose not to follow rules concerning WP:AFD. I also thought about the page for a while and came to the conclusion that Spaceman was right. My apologies. I have recommended the deletion of the page on the AFD as well.keystoneridin! (talk) 04:14, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

NXg

I've absolutely no problem with AfDing NXg - I debated sending it that way myself when I proposed the merger. Drop me a link on my talk page if you do nominate it for deletion. Thryduulf (talk) 19:03, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Talk Page

How did you go about creating the toolbar that you have on this talk page? I was looking for templates, but came up empty. Thanks!keystoneridin! (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Create a sub page -User:Keystoneridin/Navbar in your userspace with the necessary links and transclude it to the main page(s) adding {{User:Keystoneridin/Navbar}} wherever you want the navbar to be. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 22:14, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Left a message

I agree with you. The revisions to the article are nearly incomprehensible, especially with that old-fashioned British naming convention they sometimes use in India. Turned the article into alphabet soup.  :) Thanks for the alert. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 02:44, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

LOL! Oh, how I wish people would read up on the manual of style. I just had to deal with a user whose nanostubs I had to delete or redirect. So what does he do? Right. He repeatedly blanked an original of mine as found on my userpage. Sheesh.  :) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 02:52, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Loyola School, Chennai questions

Hi, I had some questions in Loyola School, Chennai, which I saw you just edited. Can you check that article's the talk page? Thanks.--AW (talk) 21:22, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm trying to clean up and create articles for the education system in Tamil Nadu. I've tried to provide a basic idea at Schools in Chennai (your question is addressed there), after I complete the accreditation systems, I'll create a master article about the education system in Tamil Nadu to provide better context. Once I'm done with that, I'll create a template to add to all schools in Tamil Nadu, making it easier to edit for those not familiar with the system. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 21:36, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks! --AW (talk) 21:48, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Already I have mentioned in the User talk:SpacemanSpiff (which is showing under 'my contributions' and nowhere in your pages!) about the usefulness of the newly launched minisite of Directorate of Matriculation Schools, Tamilnadu, under the Education portal [1] in creating your new article on the subject. Good Luck!--Chinnottakaran (talk) 08:36, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, that contribution won't show here because it's not my main talk page, it's the talk page in my sandbox. I have already created the page at Directorate of Matriculation Schools, Tamil Nadu, feel free to expand that page, it is currently only a stub. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 13:51, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello SpacemanSpiff, this is an automated message from SDPatrolBot to inform you the PROD template you added to Prominent Marathas Ruling Centres has been removed. It was removed by Starrahul with the following edit summary '(no edit summary)'. Please consider discussing your concerns with Starrahul before pursuing deletion further yourself. If you still think the article should be deleted after communicating with the 'dePRODer,' you may want to send the article to AfD for community discussion. Thank you, SDPatrolBot (talk) 21:32, 18 August 2009 (UTC) (Learn how to opt out of these messages)

Need some time to cite the references for the historical personalities in that article. You can also refer to any other list articles of a specific caste. No such references are provided that a person belongs to the specified caste--Suresh 10:51, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS isn't a good argument. However, there are many such articles that need clean up and I'm doing it with a few, other editors will do it with other articles. In this particular case, I only deleted those were there wasn't any inclination of meeting inclusion criteria, either in the list, in the articles for the respective people or even through a basic google search, I did not remove those where there weren't refs, but it appeared that they'd meet the list inclusion criteria. Verifiability is, as it should be, a strong requirement in lists and articles. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 14:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

On another subject

For someone who has never read R. K. Narayan, and has a week by the ocean in his future, what would you recommend for starters? Something on the lighter said, preferably. Thanks, Priyanath talk 01:59, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

For a first book, I'd start with Talkative Man - it was my first and it is very light and humorous. However since List of people and places in Malgudi is still not complete (or started!), you may not understand the context of some of the regular characters and places in there. Another starter could be the first one - Swami and Friends which will introduce you to some of the characters and geography of Malgudi. The World of Nagaraj is also a good starter. Don't know where you live, but these are available in the public libraries here in Santa Clara County. Books to avoid for your first - The English Teacher, The Guide, Waiting for the Mahatma and The Vendor of Sweets. Happy reading! cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 02:14, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll see if my local (and rather bucolic) library can order a couple of them from a partner, since they don't carry any of them. Priyanath talk 02:52, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello SpacemanSpiff. Actually R. K. Narayan has already been tagged with High importance for the India Project. Were you trying to say, it should be upgraded to Top importance? That would be something which would require an extreme thorough analysis of the subject. KensplanetTC 05:18, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

I have reassessed and analyzed the article. It's definitely not a Start, but C-class. It can easily achieve B-class. Although, it is well cited and has a lot of content, there are some missing gaps. The article just speaks about literature, his novels, etc...Some topics which you have missed is Legacy and Views. Since, his article has been rated as High importance, he must have had a deep impact on India. In Legacy, you could mention some institutions named after him, about his statues :), what other authors/notable persoanalities have to say about him. In Views, you could mention his political, religious, international views. Once these sections are included, it'll be a complete Biography article. Many of his novels in the "Bibliography" section have not been included in the main prose. The bullets of Awards and recognition and Criticism should be transformed to prose. In the Criticism, you could write, "Writer Afzal Khan in his book Cultural Imperialism and the Indo-English Novel: Genre and Ideology in R. K. Narayan, Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, and Salman Rushdie (1993) has criticized Narayna...................." You could also refer other GA/FA novelist/writer articles for reference. KensplanetTC 05:48, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Will do, I haven't gotten to the Awards / Criticisms sections yet, so they are definitely bare and/or need work. As for the bibliography, I need to kill some of them, they don't belong there, but the stuff that belongs in The ordeal and Later years sections have to be incorporated soon. I definitely didn't think of legacy, I'll add a section for that. I've been using Chekhov as a reference point for this so far, maybe I need to look at a few others too. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 05:55, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, Chekhov is a Feb 2007 FA. One recent (Oct 2008), comprehensive, and lengthy FA which I would suggest is Samuel Johnson. KensplanetTC 06:06, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Changed the structure a bit, will take care of the rest this week. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 16:02, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Re:Kanpur

It is done. You were wondering why people do these moves...Admins got to have jobs right... :) Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 22:16, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

I have seen different people have different opinions on dabs. For example, Hyderabad in the past was the Indian city page with a link to the dab page. Now it is a redirect to a dab page. In terms of population, the Indian city is three times bigger than the Pakistan one. You will see there will be a percentage that feel all conflicts must be resolved with a dismambiguation page, some think a little link on the top of the page should do. This will continue in the future... Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 22:24, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Done...I have fixed Sitapur move. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Andhra pradesh library association

Hello SpacemanSpiff, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I declined the speedy deletion of Andhra pradesh library association - a page you tagged - because: Is a plausible, useful redirect or is not a redirect at all. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. — Jake Wartenberg 23:54, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

I moved the page to the correct title and the lack of caps in the title words is covered by our standard search and auto-fill functionality as I mentioned in my tag note and having two titles show up is just confusing, but if R3 doesn't cover that, I'll leave it. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 00:45, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Capitalisation redirects are harmless and sometimes useful and shouldn't be deleted (I've created a fair number of them myself), as articles are not always accessed via the search box (I never use it) — in some cases these redirects are even insisted on; see for instance: Wikipedia:Naming conventions#Animals, plants, and other organisms, the zillions of pages in Category:Redirects from other capitalisations and User:Drinibot which seems to be now defunct but one of whose tasks was to go about creating them. :-) Shreevatsa (talk) 02:44, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh well, I still find it annoying when I go to the search box and many options pop up for the same article, it's plain confusing IMO. But if that's not what policy states, I guess I don't have a choice. cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 03:05, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

One protection, coming up.

On my way to protect the article. Users in India do love to write about their politicians, no? No offense to anyone in India, so no hate mail please.  :)) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 07:21, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Any Suggession

I really appreciate your comments and research on the AFD discussion on article Khayal Muhammad created by me. Any sane person would deduct that the user LineofWisdom has been bugging me for quite some time apparently for not letting him his way with another article created by me known as Marwat. He was confirmed to have used sockpuppets (resulting in a week's ban and an indefinite block of all his socks) and has being using foul language on these pages as well. Since he is taking undue advantage of the tolerance policy of Wikipedia, I would really welcome any suggestions on the issue of getting him blocked indefinitely or getting rid of him because I am tired of the antics of this brat. What should I do? -- MARWAT  03:12, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I would suggest that you take it up at WP:ANI once more, referencing the old discussion and it might be good to get a topic ban for the user on Pashto related articles for a month or two. Obviously, given the references/awards for the bio article at AfD, the AfD is going to close as a keep, but it's a waste of everyone's time to go through these kind of disruptive nominations for many Pashto articles. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 03:19, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
My dear fellow, I have only two things to say, No 1, Marwatt is the one who started chasing me, not me. Please see the history for reference. No.2, It has never been, despite my open challenges, it has never been proved / confirmed that I used a sock. It is Marwatt who got banned for edit warring which was proved. I also would like you to go and search for his nomintaion for deleting articles of Ex-Ministers, Chief Justice and Chirman of Senate (also Acting President of Pakistan), all the three articles were by user from his rival clan. You know why he nominated it? Just because he is from the opponent tribe to those. Wasn't nominating such high-profiled was waste of time? Warm Regards LineofWisdom (talk) 14:59, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
Glad to see that this was worked out at WP:ANI with an indef block. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 20:32, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Nice work!

Hey, noticed your new creations and improvements — Ramayana (C. Rajagopalachari), Grandmother's Tale, Ramayana (disambiguation), The Mahabharata (R. K. Narayan), etc... great work! Shreevatsa (talk) 02:30, 31 August 2009 (UTC) (PS: Can I steal your talk page notice about "If you leave a message here, I will reply here" etc.? How do I do that? Thanks,)

Added to you talk page, you can edit it at User talk:Shreevatsa/Editnotice. Just created Rajaji's Mahabharata also, 12 RKN books and 2 Rajaji books these past four days, feeling good about it; I just find it strange that getting Kareena Kapoor to GA is more important than articles for subjects like this, but I guess that's just WP in general, so many strange Pokemon characters seem to get more attention while articles like the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada get PRODded! cheers. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 02:55, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Not sure...

...I'll look into it for you. I'm unfamiliar with the tool, but it sounds like something I can use as well!  :) Gotta run, but take care and stay in touch, O Intrepid Hero of the Cosmos! (I am such a C&H fan, I can't begin to tell you.) --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:40, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Oh boy, am I ever a doofus. Yes, I know about the tool (thank you for the link) and it's been so long since I've had to think about it that I forgot that I automatically have it! And now, so do you. Congrats. You deserve it and a lot more. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:50, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

My pleasure. It's just one of those things I haven't had to think about, like I said. I am beyond pleased to be able to pass it on to you and I'm glad that I didn't log off before you pointed me in the right direction (blush). Gotta boogie. You take care and have fun with the new tool. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 06:56, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
