M22 Locust

Hi Skinny87! A while ago you inquired if M22 Locust tanks were used in Operation Pleshet, and my answer was negative. Recently I have discovered an interesting factoid about these tanks in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War—as part of the article Battle of Negba. Basically Negba's defenders disabled an Egyptian tank (a Fiat), which was disabled and reused by the IDF. WWII Airborne operations

Hi Some time ago I remember you talking about doing an article on British Airborne operations ? I have been working on the Special Air Service article and come across Operation Squatter their failed first operation in the desert. William Clark

It's definitely got me interested. I'd misread one unit, when he went to a Garrison Battalion it was Prince of Wales West Yorks, not Duke of Wellington's West Riding as all his other service was. 4th August thinking he's off to India would make sense he embarked on a troopship on 17th August and arrived Malta 25th August. I suppose 1st P B Batt could fit with 1st P(WO) G(arrison) Batt - depends on his handwriting. I can tell you from his attestation that he was born August 1890, was previously a farm labourer and stood 5' 4". If you find anything else post it here as I've got this page on my watchlist. I know this might be a tad cheeky, but would you be interested in developing a brief timeline of this life before the war and his service? I'm hoping to transcribe all of these letters and then develop some kind of display here at Eastbourne Redoubt centered around them, and Clark would be one of the main candidates. This is all unofficial of course, as I'm only a volunteer, but there's a lot of material here to get through and I think a good exhibit could easily be made. His letters to 'Miss Betty' ( who appears to become a 'Mrs' later on) are all part of a collection of soldiers letters sent to the good lady which have been donated to the museum. I think it was a while back, and now they've been re-discovered and I've been tasked with transcribing them to see if we can make something of them. And it seems like we can - Clark's story alone is interesting enough, but there's also a soldier who served in Mesopotamia and someone who I think was a Canadian soldier serving on the Western Front. I didn't notice until I saw the better style of handwriting and his initials. Pte J. Clarke 97888 B Company 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters. Based at Cleadon Camp near Sutherland around December 1917. Can anyone shed light on what J Clark did, and if he did in fact die as his brother's letter hinted at? Pte John J Clarke 97888 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds 6 October 1918 - how sad, so close to the end. After initial training was wih 3rd Batt Sherwoods in Sunderland in December 1917. Posted to 9th Battalion June 1918. Wounded 6 October died at 30 Casualty Clearing Station same day. Born 19 Jan 1899 at Keighley - so William's younger brother, worked as a wool comber before enlisting Feb 1917. Interesting that John spelt his surname with an e but William didn't. From the other records it looks like mother Mary Clarke did use the e

Advertising feature time - the Clark(e)s would fit nicely wihtin the remit of Your Archives as most fo the records on which information would be based come from The National Archives, Skinny knows my affiliation with TNA already, but Nthep amy not (though he may have guessed from the info I was able to dig out on Edward Preston Young. Your Archives also uses the mediawiki software, so the editing experience will be familiar - unlike Wikipedia registration is required. Once we have a basic structure I should be able to add info from the 1911 census, and also be able to see what exists by way of war diaries for the various units to help fill in the detail of what they were involved in - would be quite interesting to cmopare this against the content of the letters. Oh, and I see from Soldiers Died in the Great War that John at least was born and enliseted Keighley so the Men of Worth project would also have an interest. I beleive the main chap behind that has been through a book compiled by the local paper at the time, so there may well be a picture of John available, and possible a contemporary report of his death. Hello Skinny87. Thanks for your comments. There are intentionally no sources or cites for reading purposes. In the talk section I just wanted the actual writing to be analyzed. The writing has unmentioned sources and cites that would be in the actual article. I would have to do a word count to find out if this summary is more concise then the current version in the USG article. I appreciate your comments on reading style. That is important. The section on Grant's Civil War career would be divided into subsections. There are separate articles on Ulysses S. Grant's presidency and his presidential administration scandals. The separate USG Civil War article is to be done for the 150 anniversary of the Civil War. I am against dividing the main bio article because it should cover USG's entire life. Sorry for this late reply, im not one for using the talk pages much. Thanks for your contributions to the Irish AFV article. I have added a number of pictures to the article. All the pictures were uploaded from a file which I had saved a large number military pictures in over a number of years. All of the pictures were saved from websites but unfortunately I never recorded which websites they came from. Im also not sure of the copyright status of some of my uploads but I have requested assistance and if no copyright status is provided they will be deleted in 7 days. I have added references and citations most of them came from one source but when I get the time to do it I will add more and also to the bibliography section. Good Article Nomination and Peer Review

Dear Skinny87,

I am hoping to make a brief return to Wikipedia to write/start/expand some articles regarding Spain's 1920-1927 Rif War, but before I do that (I am gathering source material for it, anyways) I have been working on the article Richard Cantillon. My objective is to bring up to Featured Article status. Unfortunately, WikiProject Economics does not sport such a thorough a-class review system as that of WikiProject Military History. Therefore, if you are not too busy, I wanted to ask if you would be willing to either look over the article's Good Article nomination or offer some input in the peer review. I hope to take the piece to FAC after the peer review closes.

The Hamilcar page and the M22 and the Tetrarch light tanks

Talk about a mess up. I put that link at a reference at that paragraph because I did not see that there was a Wiki page on the Tetrarch light tank in a previous tank. So you are correct it was wrong to have it as a reference link and to remove it. But then comes the problem. The US Popular Mechanics editors, not having access to a lot of British information -- and probably not military experts anyway -- assumed it was the American M22 tank. If you look closely at the photo in the Popular Mechanics link you will see it is the British Tetrarch light tank which the claim is being built by "the American firm of Marmon-Herrington". Which would be a big surprise to the UK company that did manufacture the Tetrarch tank! <GRIN> I have not made any more revisions on that page. Starting the second-half of December, I'm going to begin editing for MILHIST again (I am taking the rest of October and November off to read a number of sources for future articles). I'm going to have to divide my time between MILHIST and economics, but it should work out. I just wanted to see if I could help you take it to FAC, because I'd like to start work on the tank portal again. I'm also going to start work on the article for the Trubia A4, which is the only Spanish tank that I have left (that Polish Wikipedia grant never came through, so I was never able to buy the main source until now). At the time, yes. The cheapest I could find it was for €35 or so, and that was only six months into the recession or so (when the euro was still relatively expensive compared to the dollar); shipping would have effectively doubled the cost, as well. But, I recently found it re-printed and sold for €11.25, with shipping to the US free with orders of €25+ (so, I also bought another book on the Rif War (another article I plan to edit)). An update from adopt a user

Hi there Skinny87! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Blacker Bombard

Hello Skinny87,

In this article, you have written "In Southern Command, 14,000 were ordered for use by forces in that area; twenty-four were to be issued to anti-tank regiments, twelve to troops assigned to guard aerodromes, eight per brigade and two for each Home Guard company. However, RAF personnel were forbidden from using the weapons, a restriction which was extended to the RAF Regiment when it was formed in 1942.[1]" It seems a little bit strange that 14 000 weapons were ordered and only 24+12+8+2 were delivered to the military units. Adopt-a-user

Hi Skinny87. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. This message is directed to users who have reviewed over 15 Good article nominations and are not part of WikiProject Good articles (the first message I sent out went to only WikiProject members). So for those who haven't heard about the Recruitment Centre yet, you may be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around it (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers: Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with (at the time this message was sent out, 2 recruiters have volunteered), the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available". Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497). Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along. A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The 13th Airborne Division was a U.S. Army airborne formation in World War II. Although it was active between August 1943 and February 1946, it never saw combat. The division's training was disrupted by providing reinforcements for the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and by a lack of transport aircraft for training exercises, as divisions in combat had priority for their use. The division was combat-ready by January 1945 and was transferred to France, but arrived too late to participate in Operation Market Garden, the third major airborne operation conducted by the Allies. The division was selected for Operation Varsity, supporting 21st Army Group crossing the River Rhine, but there were insufficient transport aircraft to carry it into combat. Several other operations were planned for the division, but these were cancelled because of the rapid advance of Allied ground forces. After the end of the conflict in Europe, it was shipped home before the planned invasion of Japan, but the conflict in the Far East ended before it was required. After deactivation of the division, combat personnel transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division. (Full article...)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Skinny87. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.
