Akwamu etc.

The difficulty with these rulers is to find sources and then to make anything coherent out of a mix of oral traditions and fragments of early colonial writings, both of which may confuse or compound a person with his grandfather, particularly when the primary sources are filtered by secondary sources trying to prove points. I will put them on my to-do list, but the information needed to even make a stub may simply not exist. Aymatth2 (talk) 00:00, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello, Ryan Vesey. You have new messages at Fox2k11's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hi Ryan Vesey. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  09:18, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ryan Vesey. Thanks for agreeing to stay on at Adopt-a-user. I've recently updated the list of adopters and I have included you, per your original comments on that page and your comments at User:Yunshui/Overhaul/Adopters staying on. You can see your new profile at the list of adopters. Why not update your profile with an image and maybe have another look at your description? You can also include a list of any adoptees you currently have. If you are also willing to mentor problematic users, possibly as part of a conditional unblock, please include "mentorship=yes" in your profile. Thanks again for all your help. Charles F. Crosby

Hi-I saw your article about Charles F. Crosby who served in the Minnesota Legislature. He moved back to Wisconsin and served in the Wisconsin Senate.[1] scroll down The article needs to be expanded. Also take note that the Minnesota House of Representatives was refered to was the "Minnesota Assembly" a mistake. I could expanded the article but I thought you may want to. Thanks-RFD (talk) 21:40, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for that. What are you referring to about the "Minnesota Assembly"? Ryan Vesey 12:16, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

The 'Minnesota Assembly' was a mistake in identifying the Minnesota House of Repreentatives since the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature is the Wisconsin Assembly. I did expanded the article, kept your citations intact. I had problems with the info box and this needs to include Crosby's service in the Wisconsin Senate-thanks again-RFD (talk) 12:29, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Wikify recategorization

Hello Ryan. When you raised the TfD for {{wikify}}, you gave a list of templates that could be used instead. I understand that the list might not have been comprehensive, but there's a problem. User:DoctorKubla is going rapidly through the Wikify monthly categories, replacing the Wikify tags with other tags. One of those that he's using, possibly in about 10% of cases, is {{copyedit}}, which isn't one of those you listed. This is having a most disruptive effect on the current GOCE backlog elimination drive, and is even more of a setback because we were beginning to find ourselves in a position to redirect our efforts more towards quality articles that people are putting effort into, rather than the kind of dross that hangs around in the cleanup categories for years.

I'm sure that some of the 19,000 do need copy editing, but this sudden bulk offloading into the copyedit categories is more than we can handle. Please could you take this issue up and help everyone work to a strategy we can resource? It's night here now, so I'm turning in. Will look in again tomorrow. Kind regards, --Stfg (talk) 00:23, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hmm, I can certainly understand your problem; however, the templates I listed weren't ones that I felt could be added when {{Wikify}} was removed. They were the ones that should be used on an untagged article instead of {{Wikify}} because they deal with wikification. One major problem we had with WikiProject Wikify was that many editors were using {{Wikify}} when the article needed copyediting. I certainly don't mean to make light of the situation, because it can be a real pain when a lot of pages are added to your backlog during a drive; however, unless those tags are incorrect, I don't see a reason for him not to add those tags. Maybe something good can come out of this. GOCE can advertise the increased backlog and gain some new members. Ryan Vesey 00:41, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
Actually, Ryan, if you'd please re-read, I didn't ask you to stop him doing it, just to help get everyone working on a resourceable strategy. In light of what I said about what we're trying to do, I'll assume your last two sentences were intended as humour. Fortunately DoctorKubla has been very helpful at our talk page, so we're getting to grips with things that way. Regards, --Stfg (talk) 14:20, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Bot

I left a new comment at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Ryan Vesey Bot 3. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:16, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently there are 1835 submissions waiting to be reviewed and many help requests at our Help Desk.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog. You might wish to add {{AFC status}} or {{AfC Defcon}} to your userpage, which will alert you to the number of open submissions.

PS: we have a great AFC helper script at WP:AFCH!

What is it?

Hi Ryan! On Red Hat On Head's talk page, I heard you mention that you gave her lessons. May I ask you what those lessons are? I really need some lessons. If it's something interesting, then I'll ask you if I can participate! So..... what are these lessons? Please answer on MY talk page, thank you! DEIDRA C. Page Curation newsletter

Hey Ryan Vesey. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Changes between this and the last release include deletion tag logging, a centralised log, and fixes to things like edit summaries.

Hopefully you like what we've done with the place; suggestions for future work on it, complaints and bugs to the usual address :). We'll be holding a couple of office hours sessions, which I hope you'll all attend. Many thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:26, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Major Israel McCreight/Chief Blue Horse

Ryan, thank you for your kind assistance in getting started. I'm lost in the image vetting process. Can you please help me? Richlevine00 (talk) 21:41, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey Rich, can you clarify what you mean by the image vetting process? Ryan Vesey 01:42, 21 September 2012 (UTC) OK, for example, I am uncertain how to proceed with this image, M.I._McCreight,_Iron_Tail_and_Flying_Hawk,_1906.jpg. It was not published in 1906, but was created around 1911-1912. This specific image is cropped from one of a number of photos taken of various members of the McCreight family with Chief Iron Tail and Chief Flying Hawk. A similar photo was published in 1936 by McCreight in Chief Flying Hawk's Tales. The copyright of the publication was McCreight's and was not renewed. I would like to use the tag most appropriate and would appreciate your guidance. Richlevine00 (talk) 17:46, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
So the image was not published until 1936? In that case the best tag would be {{PD-US-not renewed}}. If it was published prior to 1923 it should be tagged with {{PD-1923}}Ryan Vesey 20:10, 21 September 2012 (UTC) Thank you Ryan. Regarding Chief Blue Horse...I would like to use an image of him and his brother Red Cloud from from the Harvard Diggins Library. They were both painted by Burbank the same year. The page says "Released to the World-Wide-Web with special permission of Caxton Press." http://www.harvard-diggins.org/Burbank/Burbank_Among_The_Indians/Burbank_Among_the_Indians.htm. I will not use photos attributed to other copyright owners, only the ones released from Harvard and Caxton. Can you please suggest the appropriate tag.Richlevine00 (talk) 20:59, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Hey Rich, sorry for the delay. I suggest you ask for assistance at WP:MCQ. They'll be able to help you more than I can. Ryan Vesey 23:05, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

University of Pennsylvania templates

Adding University of Pennsylvania templates to alumni biographies and athletic teams would be fine by me, but they are all being added with class= and importance= with no class or importance stated. I worked many hours to get the existing quality and importance table down to no unrated articles, and now your 'bot will add thousands of such articles to the table. I have already fixed a few, but there is no way I will tackle doing thousands of talk page templates. Please think through what you are doing before continuing. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:46, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

My bot isn't intelligent enough to pick up the class rating when it already exists (it's just using AWB) and there's no other option for the importance. I've stopped my bot momentarily. Ryan Vesey 23:48, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
I could conceivably have it put all the importance ratings at low, because most of them will be, but I'd prefer to leave that so someone reviews them independently when they go to update the class rating. Ryan Vesey 23:59, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Better to have them all set at stub and low, than not assessed at all, IMO. I am not going to do thousands of UofP template ratings, one by one. I did that for [[Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, and Erie, and Pennsylvania, and I recently finished Guyana. --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:12, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm certainly not going to set them at stub and low, that's just incorrect. There's no rush in assessing them anyways. I'll try to do a couple every week. Ryan Vesey 00:15, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

When I've made up my mind

The lessons sound great! I might want to take them! I'm VERY busy from all the crazy school work, so I'll inform you when I make up my mind and FINALLY figure out my mixed homework schedule! I might want to be an adoptee to you. ALSO- I wanted to ask what exactly do your adoptees learn in these lessons? Thank you, have a cool day! DEIDRA C. (talk) 02:00, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

You changed the template to state that this was published before 1923. Are you aware of any pre-1923 publication? The source looks like something which could easily be a photo of a family photo album full of unpublished photos. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:58, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

I know of nothing outside of the 1915 date. What do you consider published? Ryan Vesey 22:52, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
The pre-1978 definition of "publication" is strange, so I'm not sure exactly what counts as publication. However, if someone were to sue you for copyright infringement and you claim that the photo was published before 1923, I would assume that the court require you to prove that the photo actually was published before 1923. In most cases, this means that you should be able to successfully answer the question "Where was it published?" --Stefan2 (talk) 23:14, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

WTT

If he accepts my offer, would you be interested in co-nominating? AutomaticStrikeout 04:30, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

If he wanted me to, I would certainly do a co-nom; however, he might be better off with a grand slam of supereditors nominating him. I.e. Dennis Brown, 28bytes, Reaper Eternal. Ryan Vesey 04:33, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, I don't know. Who says a potential crat has to be nominated by an admin? However, it'll be up to him. AutomaticStrikeout 04:36, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
He certainly doesn't have to, but I feel their nominations would carry far more weight than mine. Ryan Vesey 04:38, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes, perhaps so, but I think it might not be too long before you're in their territory as well. I don't know if it would be considered canvassing to ask them. I asked you because you saw my comment and responded to it first. All things considered, I don't see how there could be a valid reason to oppose WTT anyway. AutomaticStrikeout 04:40, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
On another note, I have been thinking over the idea of running for adminship in the next few months. I'm well aware that some would oppose me simply because of not having a whole year of experience and I would try not to be offended by that. However, I'm willing to give an RfA a try if only to have the experience so I'll be better prepared if I run as I originally planned around my one year anniversary. Do you think that it would be poorly received if I did that? AutomaticStrikeout 04:45, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Yes I do. You should never run through a trial or "just kidding" RfA. One of the big things is an RfA that fails increases the total time before you actually run again with each subsequent RfA being longer. [April fools RfA] started out serious and then the candidate said it was a joke later, so it came back to bite him. That being said, if you want a funny joke RfA just for reading-check out User:Kmweber/Adminship. That being said, I'd avoid adminship for as long as possible if I were you. It's a sad case that admins' comments oftentimes carry more weight, but outside of that, it's a set of tools that really aren't fun to have. The ability to delete pages, stop vandals yourself, and protect pages can be nice at time, but there's a large amount of crap that admins need to deal with.
Ok, thanks for the advice. AutomaticStrikeout 00:17, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Suggestion at Village pump

Hi, do you know if there is a process for creating an RfC or something like that for this idea? AutomaticStrikeout 20:51, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Considering the AfD's keep wasn't based on the notability of the subject, and the notability of the article has not been established and that the closing admin commented that there was no prejudice towards a future merge discussion, I don't think the fact that there was a previous AfD on the article is a sufficient reason to remove the tag from the article. If the article's references are not improved, a merge or deletion discussion is likely to occur, so I placed the tag there in hopes that the article will be improved to avoid this. I opened a discussion on the talk page before adding the tag, you're more than welcome to participate in the discussion if you feel the tag isn't applicable to the article, but the existence of a prior AfD is not sufficient reason to remove the tag. - SudoGhost 22:25, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

I know you need another Wiki-Project to tie up even more of your life with...

Automatic Strikeout and I have started a new sub-project off of the NFL Wiki-Project dedicated to referees. It can be found here. I have been here for a year now, and have some user rights, so I don't think I would need a complete one, and I do understand most stuff related to articles, as was discussed at my talk page. Not sure though. Thanks! TBrandley 03:19, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey! I'll post a longer reply tomorrow with various reasonings, but here's the short version. If you did go through my program, it would be easier for me to run you through the normal program (it doesn't require me to make specific modifications then) and I think you would benefit more than you could think running through the whole program. I was "experienced" when I went through it and I learned a lot. I'm also busy at college, so I'd be a little sporadic in my appearance, but I'd certainly be able to help you if you were willing to work with that. Ryan Vesey 05:11, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

I am starting this project this week and would like to finish by next week. Please help me with this project. Thank you very much. Please answer on my talk page because I might not be able to keep track of who is contributing and who is not. I would like you to also share your culture. If you can give me a little summary about your culture such as, foods, lifestlye, holidays, traditions, e.t.c, that would be extremely helpful. Thank you. Pleas reply on MY talk page. Happy edits! Have a great day! DEIDRA C. (talk) 18:35, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Contact outside of Wikipedia?

Hi Ryan, sorry I haven't been so active lately. School, family issues, and a newfound love for Doctor Who. So, yeah. I'm writing this message as I'm STUCK in extended day. No one has picked me up. Frustrating. Anyway, is there any way to contact you outside of Wikipedia? I need to discuss something important with you. :) Red Hat On Head (talk) 19:36, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey, if you are on my user page or talk page, you can see a drop down menu called toolbox. In that toolbox is a button that says email this user. You can use that to email any user who has their preferences enabled. Alternatively, click this link and you can send me an email. Ryan Vesey 15:06, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Move your Clickable Button sandbox to the official sandbox?

Could we move your Clickable Button sandbox to the page Template:Clickable button/sandbox so it will be in a good location for testing? Because after we do that, we can also create test cases on the "Test cases" page. –– Anonymouse321 (talkcontribs) 22:40, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Yep, I'll just do a copy paste. Ryan Vesey 22:42, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Unenhanced toolbar ref error check

An exciting feature of unenhanced toolbar is reference error check. But, is there a quick way to solve those too? --Tito Dutta 06:16, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Password

Hey Ryan. I forgot my Wikipedia password. Is there anything I can do to try and get it back? DEIDRA C. (talk) 19:42, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hi. If you entered your e-mail address when you signed up, you can have a new password generated. Click on the "Log in" link in the upper-right corner. Enter your user name, and click the button near the bottom of the page called "Mail me a new password". You should receive an e-mail message with a new random password; you can use it to log in, go to your preferences, and change your password to something you'll remember. If you didn't provide an email, you will have to create a new account and link it to your old one to avoid being accused of WP:SOCK. Asked WTT, but never heard back

Ryan, I am interested in your adoption program. I asked Worm That Turned a few days ago, but never heard back...I'm guessing with Sigma's RFA it slipped through the cracks, so I thought I'd ask you. Thanks. Go Phightins! (talk) 02:08, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey Go Phightins!, I'm actually working through an adoption program with a few other people right now. One of those is actively going through it. Since I'm in college, I really don't have time to take on more than that. (I still need to get around to correcting a current test). Perhaps you could leave another note on Worm's talk page specifically directed towards his talk page stalkers and ask if any of them are able to adopt you. He's got a number of former adoptees who now run the test. Alternatively, I might be more free to start a program in 2 weeks when I finish my midterms. Ryan Vesey 18:31, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
No hurry, I just figured it'd be beneficial since I only have about 3,100 or so edits. Thanks--Go Phightins! (talk) 19:03, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
The only user I recognized (other than you( was Rcsprinter123, on whose talk page I dropped a note, so we'll what he says. I would have gone to Electriccatfish, but he retired from Wikipedia today, so that wouldn't work. In any event, if this doesn't work out, I'll wait until you're available. Thanks for the quick reply on this. Go Phightins! (talk) 20:43, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Signature

I decided to mess around with my signature today, and wanted to know whether you thought this was OK per WP:SIGNATURE? Go Phightins! 21:39, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

It seems fine to me, you might want to bring it by Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Accessibility and make sure there's no reason your signature wouldn't be readable. Ryan Vesey 21:59, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Huggle Question

I got the rollback right to explore Huggle. I've downloaded the software, but it says that Huggle is not enabled and to check the user configuration page. I'm not sure how to create and/or what to put on the configuration page. Sorry to bother you, but I know that you've used it in the past. Thanks. Go Phightins! 19:36, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)I don't have any experience with Huggle, but if you can't get that to work, another option you might be interested in is WP:Twinkle. AutomaticStrikeout 19:40, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
I have and use Twinkle. Go Phightins! 19:41, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I see. I don't use Huggle, I'm not sure if it would work on my computer and Twinkle is generally satisfactory. AutomaticStrikeout 19:46, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
To start with, which operating system do you use? If it's not Windows, see Wikipedia:Huggle/Wine. I don't know much about the configuration page, there is information at Mw:Manual:Huggle/Configuration. I'm actually having problems with huggle in that it appears to have deleted itself from my computer. Ryan Vesey 20:03, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
I'm running Windows--Go Phightins! 20:04, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
If you search huggle in the explorer, do you see a file that says config? Ryan Vesey 20:05, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, it opens in NotePad. Go Phightins! 20:07, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Actually, try going to the irc help. Click connect in this link. #huggle connect Ryan Vesey 20:08, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hey, guys! Go Phightins, I think what you need to do is create the huggle.css page in your userspace, here: User:Go Phightins!/huggle.css. All you have to do is just put enable:true in there. You see, the config file in question isn't on your computer, it's on Wikipedia. Writ Keeper 20:13, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

I added that to the link. Now what? Go Phightins! 20:16, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Now you should be good to go. Try starting up Huggle. Writ Keeper 20:16, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
It works. Is there some kind of tutorial feature or help feature so I can start learning? Thanks for your help. Go Phightins! 20:18, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Yep, the manual's on Mediawiki. Happy Huggling! (I don't like Huggle myself; too automated. But different strokes for different folks.) Writ Keeper 20:20, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Well I tried it out and I don't really like it either for the same reasons. Do you know anything about STiki? Go Phightins! 20:39, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Not me, I just make do with Twinkle and spamming F5 on Special:RecentChanges. I really don't do much RCPatrol any more, though; only things that happen to catch my eye if I happen to be on there. Writ Keeper 20:45, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks anyway--Go Phightins! 20:46, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

People may not want to use email. Churn and change (talk) 15:43, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

But what link do you use? How are you hosting them? Ryan Vesey 15:45, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Either google docs or dropbox would do. Google drive is here. You can upload files, and mark them "share with everyone who has the link" and send the link. Dropbox is here. Hosting on a private site for a day or two isn't copyvio, and I don't see JSTOR bothering anyway. Churn and change (talk) 16:07, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
I've attempted to use dropbox before and it failed. Emailing is easier on my end. Ryan Vesey 20:42, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to participate in my RfA. I hope that I will be able to improve based on the feedback I received and become a better editor. AutomaticStrikeout 03:47, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 12:25, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for your kind words. It's nice to meet a fellow Philadelphian. -- BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 05:18, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm actually Minnesotan (emphasis on the oootan), but will be spending the next 3, possibly more, years in Philadelphia for school. Interestingly, I've found that the article I mentioned wasn't the only one that has been useful. The Washington Family was a helpful one. This website has some great information. I hope to use it if I get time away from my studies and I hope it's helpful for you. Ryan Vesey 03:30, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Well, I hope you enjoy your years in Philadelphia. Since you seem to be interested in architecture/history, take a look at the Frank Furness events and exhibitions taking place this fall: http://frankfurness.org/furness-2012/ -- BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:46, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

E-mail

Hi Ryan! :) I sent you an e-mail, did you get it? I'm just wondering, since it's been some days. I am getting more time to come on Wikipedia now, so maybe we could resume our adoption lessons? :)

Also, will it be okay if I add a picture to Mere sapno ki rani, as primary identification? I hope it's okay, because the screenshot is non-free. Red Hat On Head (talk) 01:32, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey Sasha, I did get the email and I'm looking into it, I'm sorry I've been super slow on the response. I'm in the middle of two midterms right now. It would be great if we resume the lessons, in the same manner as the email, I might be slow on responses at times, I've got one person who is waiting on answers that I probably won't get to until Friday. I believe you should be able to add the picture, the article specifically mentions the video so an image would add to that. Ryan Vesey 03:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
I understand. Stuff's finally slowing down after a bunch of tests, although I am quite sick of the education system in the US, no offence. Just... boring. And we don't get to learn world history! :( I would love love love to do India's history. Heehee.

But anyway, I don't wanna rush you, so, take your time. :) I'll go post some answers to the questions on our adoption page right now. ;3 Red Hat On Head (talk) 21:14, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
