Re:Black Hawk questions

Well, I think we are going to go with what we have so far with the Black Hawk War articles. Meaning, your map you can set up what we currently have...for now. I am hoping to talk with Ivo soon and see what he wanted to do. He will be back, just needs to get away from the idiots that are on here (and there are A LOT). Presque Isle State Park

I've looked and looked for more specifics about the birds of the park and cannot find any specifics as requested. I have excluded the mention of the endangered species for now, but personally favor keeping it. I also added more to the history and habitat, don't know what else to do. Perhaps others can expand it. A Question

Hello, I was wondering if you would be able to make a county map for me. It would be for Frederick County, Virginia and mostly just for the town of Stephens City, Virginia (of course it could be used throughout the county) as it is the town I am working on. I would like to use it for a Geography section on the town and have noticed the awesome one you did for Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. If this is possible, please let me know. Hello again :) Only Stephens City and Middletown are towns, the rest are called "Unincorporated Communities". Now, what is weird, is Winchester, which it is an "Independent City" and it's own county and county seat, it is also the county seat of Frederick County...weird, I know :)
On the far bottom of the Stephens City page is the county template and that will give you all the names of the Towns and Unincorporated Communities in Frederick County. Anti-stuttering devices

Are you still watching this situation? It came to my attention during the FAR of stuttering. We tried to improve the article during FAR, but the needs were too great, and the article was defeatured, although Slp1 (talk · contribs) continues to chip away at it. Now that the FAR has closed, one old user, and several new IPs, have re-appeared to revert stuttering to the pre-FAR version. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:38, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

What a very nice message :-) If you're willing to help out (I don't know much about COI either), can you read two sections up on my talk page (User talk:SandyGeorgia#Stuttering) and read the Stuttering FAR? Elk Knob State Park

I created Elk Knob State Park one of NC's newest state parks tonight and nominated it for DYK. Could you give it a look and look at the hook too, please? I am sure that there are too many or not enough commas and some misspelled words. Thanks for the PA geology link I added to my sandbox. President of the U nited States in Congress Assembled

Fine, keep your errors in history, I give-up. God forbid Wiki readers readers are educated that Hancock was not only President of the Continental Congress but President of the United States under its 1st US Constitution. As for Independence Hall, do you know why the government of the United States abandoned it as the seat of government? Do you have a clue? I bet you don't. I dare not add that to your precious fluff page on the Hall. For you, however, in 1783 the military mutinied and surrounded Independence Hall holding Elias Boudinot (President of the United States) hostage along with the entire government of the United States. The President called out the Pennsylvania militia to free them but they backed the mutineers and refused to show. It was future President of the United States, Artur St. Clair, who came to the rescue and finally freed them in negotiations. They vacated Independence Hall and resumed the seat of government in Nassau Hall Princeton never to return again. Now how does one tell this story or the FACT that 10 Presidents of the United States existed before George Washington without citing a source? There are so many errors in Wiki on the founding period it is ridiculous. So I start with the small stuff like acknowledging John Hancock for holding two Presidencies and cite a source to wake people up who may actually browse their precious Hancock county or Independence Hall that he held the two offices. You call it vandalism. FYI, 97.97.197.9 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) is adding the John Hancock book link to a number of articles. And I thought we already had an article on John Hancock that explains who he is, and I think it already explains that he was the president of the Continental Congress. I didn't think we had to have that information (including the link that sells a book) in every article that has anything to do with Hancock. St Kilda map

The Gaelic issue is difficult. The truth is that the original map-makers just invented English spellings for the same sounds e.g Stac Lee = Stac Liath. Ordnance Survey are now relenting and in some cases going back to the originals. However 'Stac Lee' is how the object is spelled in English sources and as you suggest, having everything in Gaelic is going to cover the map. I'd say the map is fine as it is, although adding (Hiort) would do no harm. I've just seen your comment at Peer review. There's probably room for Gleann Mòr (it's south east of the wide bay on the north-west of Hirta). If your enthusiasm stretches that far you could produce a Gaelic version (Hiort, Stac Liath, Stac an Àrmainn, Stac Leibhinis are the variants, Soay and Boreray being in the original). Citations

It's not the wikilink that's the citation, it's the book itself--or the game, or the video: That's the source where the claim can be verified. While it's obviously preferable to have full citations with publication info, it's not at all obvious to me that it's preferable to have a "citation needed" tag indicating where such an expanded citation should go when the actual verifiable source is obvious.

More generally, I think the tendency to add a tag indicating where work needs to be done as opposed to actually doing the work is a very problematic one for Wikipedia. There's no article that couldn't be improved, yet it's not clear to me how pointing that out benefits the reader--or the editor; anyone who's actually going to be able to clean up an article doesn't need to be told it needs clean up.

I do appreciate your adding at least some of the improved citations rather than just putting the tags back. The irony here is that the removal of the tags was more effective in actually provoking improvement of the article than the placement of the tags in the first place. Admin tools

Greetings, Ruhrfisch. I was reading your RFA, and I noticed the following answer to question #1:

Starting small, I would use the ability to check if an article is being watched or not, and add unwatched municipality articles in Ohio and Pennsylvania to my watchlist.

FYI, admins cannot see whether an article is watched or not. Eh, I wouldn't worry with it. The fact that no one else has mentioned it means (a) people aren't paying very close attention to your statements, (b) others are equally confused about what admin tools provide, or (c) other people are more polite than me, and didn't want to mention it. :-) So I wouldn't bother to strike it. By the way, this has come up before as a potential tool, but it never really went anywhere. I get the impression that it would be a difficult ability for the developers to implement, and some people think it would be too dangerous to implement anyway. (Maybe there are privacy concerns?)

Actually, there is a way to get a list of unwatched pages. It's at Special:Unwatchedpages, and it's listed under the admin-only section of Special:Specialpages. Apparently, it wasn't hard for the developers to implement, and it wasn't a privacy concern since there are no individual users involved. PA state parks, again

Ryerson Station

Could you email Ryerson Station and ask if the lake is still or was drained? The email is ryersonstationsp@state.pa.us. I would but want to do something about it while Ryerson is on my mind and I can't email from work and will be here until my carriage turns back into a pumpkin. The GNIS work is going along pretty well. I added my groundhog page to Dan's geobox page and vice versa to make updating both easier. The bio's definetly need a date for point of reference. Black Moshannon

I have added what I can add to Black Moshannon State Park. You had mentioned having notes on it from Cupper's? book. I am not in a hurry to get it to GA review and will wait until or if you can get pics of it. I will also look on flickr for more. I really don't want to do what I did a Pettigrew State Park and add pics of animals and plants that are found at the park but not actually pics of plants and animals at the park. Know what I mean? Hope all is well. Working until midnight again. Oh yeah, I've been running the peer review on lots of articles, just to kill time. Thanks for more sources! I have a question. As an admin can you access bots? The bot that added the infoboxes to Lycoming County is the bot I'd like you to use if you can. CapitalR has it. He ran it all throughout the US and was going to exclude PA. I asked him to add it to Lycoming County and he did it, then I asked for the other municipalities in PA to be run through it and I haven't heard back. I have the info on the places that need infoboxes sorted out at User:Dincher/Woodchuck. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciatated. Image copyrights

I'm working on one of the PA articles languishing in my userspace, and I'd like to scan and add an image to it. The photograph in question was taken "around 1900" and printed on a postcard, presumably about that time. I don't have an original postcard, but I have a reproduction of the image in a book published 2002. As I understand it, simple reproduction doesn't affect copyright, so I could scan the image, duly credited, and upload it as PD-US. Does that seem correct to you? Minor White Deer Hole Creek q. & tacking on congrats

Do you have access to the original material for reference #42 in the White Deer Hole Creek article? There is a typo in the title "Alvira: an explosve ghost town" (missing 'i' in explosive), but I cannot locate an online source to check if the typo is in the original Williamsport Sun-Gazette article or is in error.

The four highest peaks are Conachair, Oiseval, Mullach Mòr and Mullach Bi. They are not on the map you linked to, but are on the detailed map at Revised nomination of St Kilda for inclusion on the World Heritage Site List. It's a big pdf if you have slow access. Image deletion

Have you checked your Commons page? Some IP address (24.165.124.148) has listed two images for deletion: your map of Allen County and my picture in Bluffton, a village in the county. According to the canvassing rules, contacting two usernames who on record are being opposed to an issue could constitute canvassing. I reran the script per a request on my talk page and here are the results:

    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

  • I agree that the use of vague terms of size should be discouraged but completely discarding them is almost impossible. I have kept the use of these vague terms to the least possible number(three to four times in the whole article).
  • Redundancy/copy-editing I do not know how to go about this(though you have given some good exercises here)because I cannot find any discrepancies in the article(and a third person maybe able to point them out to me), so how do I ask a seasoned editor to edit it??

Does the bot count "vague terms of size" that are within quotes too? If this is the case I have a good logic that can solve this problem, I am not familiar with programing languages other than C++ or VB so I dont know the coding in Perl or Python. Basically make the bot count all the double quotes before the word is encountered, if the number of counts(of double quotes) is even then the word is outside the qoutes and should be considered but if the number of counts is odd then the word is within the quotes and should be ignored.

Seems I wrote too early, they have improved the net connection and I am able to edit the article finally from here :)

    • I don't understand this: "The CGI was produced by FUNimation Entertainment and broadcasted in Japan by Kids Station, beginning January 6, 2003, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 12 p.m. (JST). The show also premiered between 10:50 p.m. and 23:30 p.m.(JST) on December 31, 2002.[4]" I would list the premier first, then the usual air times. Also 10:50 p.m. makes sense, but 23:30 pm does not - either "between 10:50 and 11:30 p.m." or "between 22:50 and 23:30". I think most casual readers would understand the p.m. version better.

I don't either, the reference site just says premiered ->date and time (probably refering to a promotional screening?? or a private screening(highly improbable)). and broadcasted on -> network, date, time, day(public airing on TV). But I have changed the order of the sentence and the timings to 12-hours system as you suggested.

    • The characters table refers to episode number, but the list of episodes does so by title and "Volume" number. The table of characters seems a bit much - could there just be a list of major characters and then the details on the minor ones could be in the episode summaries?

I too felt the table to be a bad addition (but couldn't think of anything else). If I do what you suggest the character section will contain only two characters with a one line summary of each :(
anyother alternatives? Maybe covert it to a list similar to the episodes? I have changed Episodes to Volumes.

    • You might want to find a featured article or good article on an animated series and use it as a model for the article.

Small note

I really don't like creating stubby articles just to fill out redlinks. I used to do this because people asked me to, but I have found that none of those articles has yet been expanded since I created them. I have concluded from this very unscientific trial that stubs discourage editors from creating thorough articles more than redlinks. I personally would also rather create a decent "start" article. Thanks for the helpful review, which pushed us to fix a fair number of things that had slipped through. I read three of Huntford's books a couple of years ago and fell in love with the polar expeditions. Lazulilasher and others had done most of the work on Ernest before I appeared on the scene. Now I'm not sure I want to stop. I found an even better map, :Image:ShackletonEnduranceCarte.png, in the Commons this evening that shows all the comings and goings of Endurance and Aurora. It's in French, and converting it to English would give me an excuse to learn some rudimentary map-making skills.
