I reviewed what I posted yesterday and agree with you totally. I will source and reference and clean up my input.

My primary concern was that you can not search the word "Taw" on Wikipedia and find that it is the commom word (in the USA) for a Hopscotch marker. The firm I listed as making taw's is long out of business. But my source was the first reference to the word taw that I could find. I do not knwo who invented the the idea or word Taw but I will continue to research this aspect of the USA entromprial spirit often tries to turn a free fun game into somethign for profit.

I am new to this, but I am excited to share various aspects of game culture and learning with others through this formate. T

Nationality is about more that citizenship, which is a straightforward legal status. This was pointed out at the mediation page, and was not disputed there. Sources that are generally considered reliable have ascribed Irish nationality to Rocha. It does not preclude him having other 'identities' . I really don't understand this single-minded determination to do battle over a question of 'apples and oranges'. By the way, why is this discussion hapenning here and not at the mediation page? I don't think that is your call to make, NorthernCounties. If Wikipedia is a credible encyclopaedia, it cannot contain untrue statements. In reply to RashersTierney, Irish nationality has not been awarded to John Rocha. He is not an Irish national and has never claimed to be. Rocha is resident in the state of Ireland and is eligible to apply for Irish nationality based on his length of residence in Ireland and/or on his marriage to an Irish national, but until an application is made and is subsequently granted, John Rocha is not and does not claim to be an Irish national. Linking etc

It's pretty standard to not link the country, compare the FA-class Slayer, The Beatles, Nirvana (band), Metallica etc. It's not universally done so I won't get too hung up about it, but I can't really see the purpose of having Ireland linked; someone wanting to find out more about the area where Thin Lizzy formed are far more likely to click on Dublin, and in any case that links to Republic of Ireland. Not as simple as it might first appear. This specific issue regarding the name of the Irish state has been debated ad nauseam and for years here. Aspects were even the subject of an ArbCom decision. I will always defend my friend. On Romani people and Athinganoi

disproportionate - broke flow of text - covered at Names of the Romani people, - perhaps could be expanded there

I don't think it's disproportionate; if it were only for Greek etymology, the present text would perhaps be enough.But it also makes sense for the name in many other languages.Greek has both Egyptians and Athinganoi for this people(this is circular and obvious of course cause Greek seems to the origin of both the names).But other languages have predominantly only either one (like english -> gypsies and german -> zigeuner).And it would be helpful for people to know. I don't think that being covered at Names of the Romani people (which in fact isn't fully covered there;what is more covered there is the history of the heresy-cult that initially had the name and so on) suffices.

What I do I agree with is that it indeed breaks the flow and that therefore it should be expanded there or somewhere else in the text by someone better in expressing himself in English than me. Anyway that's my opinion. Will copy this at the article's talk page and let the crowd decide. :)

Scotch

In editing the article on Scotch-Irish, I mentioned that Scots find the use of "scotch" pejorative, referencing a wiki article as the source. Which in turn referenced it's source. If one article is acceptable, surely the other is too.

Galbraith's use of the term Scotch is revealing in demonstrating the usage of a Canadian speaking about his own community; and certainly his use of the term is not pejorative. This is an example of how older uses of words and forms continue in communities of expatriates broken off from their original roots, in this case in the 18th century when 'Scotch' was the prevailing term. Similarly, the Scots who settled in Ulster, many of whom later emigrated, are known non-pejoratively in North America as the Scotch-Irish. Quick response. I think the difference in interpretation hangs on whether there was an unambiguous offer to end partition from London to Dublin, over the head of Craig, in return for joining the Allies, or an offer to discuss the matter. Churchill in particular had always been adamant that 'Ulster' would not be coerced into a union with the south against its wishes. Perhaps he did momentarily reverse this policy position, but the reaction of the Dublin government indicates that they at least did not consider this was the case, nor do Churchill's own memoirs support this line of thinking. Certainly they all kept quiet about it afterwards, but Dev required the British commitment in the first draft to be altered to a "solemn undertaking", a term with significance in international law; it was then altered; then he decided not to continue. Technically there was an offer with terms (by GB), counteroffer (by Dev), acceptance (by GB) and rejection (by Dev) - preliminary negotiations which came to nothing but amounted to something more than a suggestion to discuss the matter. Re: Irish people

Yes, a nation as in a group of people that share a common language, race, descent or history. Members of the Irish nation live in a number of sovereign states around the world, and the state is what the nationality field in the infobox is referring to. I've seen so many two/three line sentences that doesn't give much details and have asked myself why do these people do not do a reasonable job at writing the article for Wikipedia. A two or three line stub still has value. No-one expects those lines to be the last word on the subject. The purpose of maintenance tags is not to state the obvious, still less to reprimand the initiating editors a la school report: "Little Joey must apply himself harder if he is not to fall behind in the next semester!" Hello RashersTierney, Drmies re-applied the tag that Northamerica1000 has removed. The tag says that "a major contributor" which refers to me, however, the article has been cleaned out and all my contributions AND MORE has been removed. I do not intend on contributing to the article anymore so do you see any reason for the tag to be there? It clearly shows that the article is completely neutral (that's why Northamerica1000 removed the tag) and I'm no longer a contributor to the article. I hope you agree. Please let me know. Yes, I'm new to this. Am just trying to clean site up a bit. Have been adding references but haven't learned yet how to make them go into proper list. Have friend who said he'd give me hand.

Sorry that it is taking a while for me to get to grips with it. Meanwhile, have been writing with an eye to as many wiki links as possible.

I have made a mistake though. I saw that Balgriffin had no references so I decided to start to lay it out a bit better and add references. I put in one silly one and the system rejected it, reverting back to original. I read that there is a revert/undo mechanism.

Would you be able to undo it for me and take the poor reference out? (I was going to use it as a 'see more' link but that didn't work out, obviously.)

I'd appreciate if you would do that. Hope I'm not breaking rules by being needy...

Hi Ainenim. I've added a Reference section ( with reflist) to the article so that references should now appear when applied. Your addition was removed by a 'bot', (a piece of software that carries out maintenance tasks automatically), so it is essentially 'gone'. Apparently the bot read your attempt to apply a reference as an External link. Do you want it re-applied as a ref? It seems to be a reliable source.

Remember too to sign your posts on discussion pages like this one. If you type four tildes, (the squiggles above #), on the right hand side of your keyboard, your 'User name' and the time you posted will appear like magic when you press 'Show preview' and 'Save page'. I'll polish Clongriffin and then what I'd really like to do is open up a site for Bayside Bay.

While working on the history section, I realised that not only the international community but also local children who doing school projects quickly land on this site. With that in mind, I'd also like to upgrade and reference the local historical sites.

I had no idea that there is a community of people behind Wikipedia until an hour before I heard from you. Is it rude of me to ask you for some help setting Bayside Bay up?

Ans: I guess that means that I shouldn't apply references as external links. I think you are referring to DCC-Fr Collins Park site. It showed up in purple. I was trying to make it like the 128 bus connection that someone had put there before me. I can make that a reference, if it isn't gone.

That particular template doesn't have a "documentation" page to explain how it's used, so I can see why you're having problems. It's probably best just to click on "What links here" in the Toolbox on the left-hand side of the template page, and have a look at some articles that it's used on to see how it's implemented. Wiki etiquette

Hello again Rashers, As I am very new to Wiki and plan to open a page for Bayside Bay (see above), I wonder if I should be introducing myself ... (to whom I don't know).

As you can see, I updated Clongriffin site, putting considerable time and effort into it with plenty of references. Whoever wrote the original piece, reverted the Amenities & Facilities section to how it was, which was entirely out of date. (For example, Clongriffin no longer has a chemist/pharmacy and since Quinnsworth changed hands, the plans to open a store have been cancelled.)

I don't want to get into petty arguing with someone who I don't even know, especially over entirely subjective details. (It is my understanding that the whole concept behind Wiki is objective information and that history goes into the history section.) It is not my intention to hurt the feelings of those who put time and effort into setting the page up in the first place. I would much prefer to work amicably.

Do you have any comments to make or advice to give? I do not want to tread on the toes of others who spend lots of time on this site.

That way, I can respond and introduce myself. I am a resident of Clongriffin and certainly not a developer. I too have pyrite so I know all about the feelings that come with its issues.

Nevertheless, Clongriffin is a new town and is experiencing a huge population boom. With plenty of babies, young children and some teenagers, I have talked with many of the parents of Clongriffin who don't know the neighbourhood so well. Essentially, by writing up the history and pointing out the fact that it is possible to go for plenty of walks. As I said before, I laid out the historical details mostly with children in mind, but also for their parents and teachers.

I need to convey that to the person who is currently putting sections back to how they are, some with incorrect information, etc.

In response to your kind message to SeoR on my behalf

Hello Rashers (& SeoR), I am Ainenin and I thank you for the messages that you left me. Yes, I am new to Wiki, having signed up only last week. I very much appreciate your help.

To introduce myself, I am female, grew up in North East Dublin, and came to the site for educational purposes. My intention has been to create a Bayside Bay site but first I have to rise to the challenge of learning the technicalities of the Wiki system.

Also, as you both know, I have been abused for updating and further opening the Clongriffin site.

I admit that I arrived in almost complete ignorance. Upon my arrival, the Clongriffin site was out of date by at least six months, it was full of speculation and subjective opinion, vastly un-referenced, and looked more like a blog than a Wiki site. It seemed to be abandoned and I thought it was as good as any other place to cut my teeth, so I proceeded to clean it up. (I now live in Clongriffin and my neighbour gave me a hand setting up on Wiki. I currently have neighbours who are from the outside Dublin and/or Ireland. Most of them don't even know Grange Abbey exists or that they can walk out to the estuary from the train station so I thought it would be a nice way to thank them for their help by posting that sort of info first.)

I am sorry that I upset people. Rashers has kindly sent me instructions for writing an open apology. I have not done that yet because I have been busy the last few days and to be honest, I was so upset by the nastiness that I actually lost sleep. There are clearly angry and ignorant people lurking about on the Clongriffin site. I am not interested in fighting blindly on the internet.

To clarify, I don't know if you can tell what I was up to step-by-step, but essentially I cleaned up the civic information, updated the facilities etc, and then grappled with extensive tagging and referencing in the natural geographic and history section. As I said, while I was working away, I thought I was in an empty, abandoned space. I had no idea that I was being watched and criticised. If I had known that (a) I probably would have worked more offline, (b) I would have introduced myself properly so as not to offend those who had opened the site before me, and (c) had I known that Wiki harbours ignorami, I wouldn't have bothered because I don't appreciate being slagged off and abused, especially when my intentions are altruistic.

RashersTierny thankfully has been very kind and generous. I thought he approached me because I triggered a need for some technical assistance but I actually now understand that is a gentleperson. I am most grateful.

Following the Wiki abuse that I took, I have questioned if I should carry on or not. But this is not a vanity project. I am an educator and I still want the children to learn about the estuary, the bay, the local rivers, streams, wells, birds, nature, etc, and I find now that I can’t resist but want to fill in the history sections for them too.

Ultimately, I cannot go on without further assistance. I can’t yet open new information pages, comment on what I’ve done, or bear being abused on-line. I can quickly learn the technicalities but I’m afraid that I might never be able to suffer fools gladly.

Clongriffin Open Page: Even though they didn’t have to barge in, kicking sand around and being so rude and mean about the work that I put in (which took hours of my time), in self defence I referenced nearly every sentence I wrote, tagging extensively as I went along. I stress that I thought I was working quietly in a forgotten corner or else I would have fully referenced every sentence straight away.

I am sorry that I upset people … Some points they made had some merit but I remind you that I simply hadn’t finished the work.

For example, Clongriffin is not a town, but it is a residential area in its own right. I’ve got the referencing and can apply it.

Clongriffin is no more ‘North Donaghmede’ than it is ‘South Portmarnock’. This is ridiculous inverted snobbery. I might not have learned the technicalities of Wiki yet, but I do know academics and I have the references for this too.

Wiki does not approve of individuals using the site as a blog. All information should be tagged and referenced appropriately. I can do that if you like but if it results in other locals hurling insults at me ... Would either of you like to discuss this further?

Historical Sites/Grange Abbey: As a local with a great interest in early medieval history, I thought I clearly emphasised that Grange Abbey was more of a granary than an actual Abbey.

Times have changed. Nowadays, some of us are more impressed by fantastic architectural delights such as the new Father Collins Park and Dundrum Shopping Centre than we are by substance and sound engineering. Nevertheless, the Grange monastic site was a priory and of profound importance. Besides the fact that it deserves to be acknowledged as much as, let’s say, Kylmore Abbey. (Even the holiest among us have to eat.)

Malahide and Sutton chapels are also named Abbeys. [I think this is because St Samson was an Abbot when he arrived in Ireland with two Irish monks to visit Howth. He was a noble of Irish descent so it wasn’t long before he was given some land to start his own settlement. I think the local ‘Abbeys’ got their names because they were associated with the Welsh Abbe. I am reading on that and looking for references to back me up.]

It seems that there are thugs on site who think I am trying to "dolly" things up. I am not trying to gild the lily but it at the same time, I don't want to overlook such a significant site. It deserves better treatment. Personally, I believe it should be restored. King Henry VIII did huge damage when he invaded. It is amazing that the original chapel still stands.

Perhaps by the time you saw it, someone had gone in and fiddled it. (I noticed that some wording was changed, clearly before actually reading the references.)

Nevertheless, I would like to further expand. In the 11th century, Grange Abbey was founded, but that does not clarify the age of the site. I was planning on expanding that. How do you feel about this? Am I supposed to be asking for permission? I’d like to know, thank you. If SeoR is interested in this area, I’d be very happy to discuss it further.

Also, I’d like to fill in the history of Donaghmede, St Donagh’s well and river (which mark Donaghmede, not Donaghmede-South), his infamous apiaries and mead.

However, if the ‘North/South’ Donaghmede brigade want to shout me down and abuse them I’ll either want to turn off my computer and carry on my work elsewhere. Like I said, I don’t want to be arguing with anyone so perhaps it is best to leave well enough alone.

How do either of you, especially SeoR, feel about this?

If you are interested in the educational side of things, then I would be entirely grateful to you for technical assistance and some etiquette training so that I don’t offend anyone else.

You've said a lot there, and I'd like take some time to respond , but the main thing I'd like to say is I'm glad to hear from you, as I was a bit worried you might 'throw in the towel'. You certainly have no reason to write an apology, open or otherwise. That was never my intention. Editing on Wikipedia can be quite a culture shock at the start (and can sometimes be frustrating to the point of distraction the longer you stay around :- ). All I can say in that regard is that your efforts are appreciated and you will become familiar with the 'cut and thrust' of editing on 'the encyclopedia that anyone can edit'. Try not to take criticism too much to heart, certainly nothing here is worth loosing sleep over! Discussion with other interested editors (not necessarily those who agree with your point of view, perhaps particularly those you disagree with) is the best way of ensuring that material content remains stable and not subject to endless removal and re-application. I think you and SeoR, who clearly also appreciates your efforts (as I'm sure others do, who may not have said so), should discuss possible content issues between yourselves. You are both clearly more informed on this region than I am. Derrida: The Quarrel with John Searle

Dear Mr RashersTierney

I made some changes to my entry in "Derrida: The Quarrel with John Searle" from yesterday. You were right on your critics, I used to much Derrida's quotations ("Too much borrowes text"), and added to much. I'm sorry. I hope it's more concise and strait to the point that matters.

I believe you agree this part of the entry was quite poor, giving to much attention to an impolit behavior from Searle that we shouldn't backup in anyway. I tried to limit my quotations to Derrida's answer and move on to much more serious subjects about Derrida's critics on Searle work around "intentionality" and his main arguments against Austin, Searle and, in a certain way, all analytical tradition.

I believe people that search the wikipedia are more interested in this kind of arguments and information than sad behaviour in the media from respectable scholars regarding there peers (in philosophy, in economics, biology, physics and in all other areas). I believe ou agree that it would become a sad show if academic debate turned out to this kind of gossip and insults on the media.

Hi Rashers,

While I do agree that the last paragraph I wrote was unreferenced I included references for the other parts which included hse.ie and the waterford county council. The way I wrote this paragraph was to give the other side of the argument. I will concede you deleting my paragraph if you flag the part written before mine as contentious and potentially biased.

I do not believe the views I added are contreversial or an act of vandalism

I'm happy to help out so long as we can maintain a collegial atmosphere. That means adherence to policy, appropriate referencing and a willingness to discuss before dramatic edits. Peter was a Drama Professor so I guess that's one reason why he seems so strongly determined to express his opinions however over time I'd be happy to help Peter by consensus with other wikiEditors redraft. Not to worry, Angeldharma. It can appear very daunting here at the beginning. Your Username is your public identifier on Wikipedia and is how you are recognised here amongst the 'community'. If you have concerns about your present name it can be changed, if you really think it important for privacy reasons or whatever. Let me know if that is something you think you need to do. References don't have to be on the web. Local newspapers for local articles are generally fine. If you need help with formatting a particular reference, drop me a line here and we can discuss it at your User talk page before applying it to an article.
