The Combination

I'm afraid I can't provide a better quote from the book I got the information from. They haven't cited anything other than newspaper reports from the time as where they got their information from. I think the best I can do is to tell you that the quote I put in comes from a chapter/paragraph entitled 1888-89. - PeeJay 22:46, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

"1888/89
Towards the end of the 1887/88 season, the papers were full of the story of the suggestion by William McGregor of Aston Villa that twelve leading clubs form themselves into a "league" or "union", to play each other home and away. Twelve clubs meant 22 games in total; it was thought that this was all the "spare" Saturdays that could be fitted into the season, given the demands of the F.A. Cup and local cup competitions (such as the Lancashire and Manchester cups). Six clubs from Lancashire and six from the Midlands made up the original twelve. The Lancashire six were Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Everton and Preston North End. To give some indication of their strength, Newton Heath's record against these clubs in 1887/88 is shown in the following table:[table removed]
There were strong "economic" reasons for forming a "league" (it took some time to agree to call it the "Football League" and alternative names were proposed.) The guaranteed home fixtures meant that gate receipts were likely to be higher since the games would arguably be more competitive than mere friendlies, thus drawing a bigger gate. Other clubs were not slow to see these benefits, and a meeting in Crewe was attended by many of the clubs not included in the 12. This led to the formation of the "Football Combination".
Until recent years, the Football Combination has been somewhat overlooked by the modern statistician. The trouble was that 20 clubs were included, too many to play a complete set of home and away games. The decision was taken that the clubs should arrange home and away fixtures with eight other clubs, making a 16 game season for each of the clubs. The Football League clubs sent representatives to a meeting of their league in the summer of 1888 at which the fixtures were arranged. The Combination organised no such meeting, leaving it to the individual club secretaries to make arrangements as they saw fit. Unfortunately, this process did not work very well; even contemporary reporters were confused as to whether fixtures were Combination games or just a friendly. The secretary of the Combination circulated a table at the end of October, but sadly this was the only attempt to sort out the mess that had arisen, and the Combination was wound up in April 1889. From Newton Heath's viewpoint, that was a pity. They had almost completed their programme of 16 games, and had the best record of the 20 clubs.

I think that explains why there's so little info about the Combination these days, and also verifies that it was held in 1888-89. - PeeJay 23:06, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

James Milner Off the pitch section

Over the past few weeks I’ve been researching desperately to try and expand this section. But for the most part I can only find very trivial facts. Another user has told me that off the pitch sections are not mandatory and in this case it would be best to remove it completely. I’m not so sure, however minor his off the pitch activities might be it would be useful to give an idea of what he’s like as a person.

Article for Deletion

My intention for deleting the article instead of speedy deleting was because I thought that the criteria for speedy deletion was something with much higher reasons other than for the reasons for deletion, hence the deletion tag. Why PostJobFree artile was deleted?

It seems you deleted PostJobFree article and claim that the article is spam. Is there any way I can write about PostJobFree.com on wiki that will not be considered spam? Dennisgorelik 14:42, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

  1. Are there any criteria about how popular should be web site in order to deserve to be mentioned on Wikipedia? How many visitors/month?

According to you, being "81,000th most popular site worldwide" is not enough for being notable enough (to be mentioned on WikiPedia with 2+ million articles -- 2 million is 70 times more than 81000). Could you please provide a ranking number, which would indicate that a web site is notable enough? I couldn't find such number on WP:WEB (You may consider to add such ranking guideline there). 1) Chris, you still haven't answered my "Rank Threshold Number" question. Note, that this is important question in itself. I need to know this number, so I would come back when PostJobFree.com reaches that threshold.
2) The reason to you to mention that number in WP:WEB is that web site rank / popularity is iron clad indicator of "Recognition by others". All other criteria could hardly be measured / compared and could easily be spoofed.
3) Note, that Wikipedia has many articles web sites that are considerably less popular than postjobfree.com. One of such examples: Viewroo. See viewroo.com traffic data.
4) Even if we apply notability criteria from WP:WEB, you'll see that PostJobFree complies with: "The content is distributed via a medium which is both respected and independent of the creators". Indeed.com, simplyhired.com and other job search web sites distribute PostJobFree.com content.
5) I don't mind that you deleted PostJobFree article now. I just want to have a criteria, so I could recognize the time when PostJobFree is notable enough for Wikipedia. So, could you give me this rank threshold guideline number?

I would like to contest your deletion of Dean W. Hockney. Mr. Hockney is a noted graduate of Kokomo High School and a community leader as well as a National award winning writer. He is a subject matter expert in the field of high school basketball in Indiana (which is very important to Hoosiers). He also has one book already published, and I beleive his inclusion meets the Wikipedia standards. Thank you for reconsidering this entry.

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You're right, the article is nonsense. This lists every player who has played for Chelsea's first team, and there's no record of "Daniel Stock" or anyone else called Stock. List of FA Cup giant-killings

I've nominated this article for deletion. Having spend forever trying to keep the list logical, I just can't see any way in which we can improve it to be anything other than a subjective list based on the bias of individual editors. This weekend for example we have had Havant's win added (Notts County are hardly a footballing giant) and the readdition of Nottm Forest beating Charlton (bookies were giving the same odds on wins for both so it wasn't even a surprise.) Hello again, I wonder if you could comment on my proposed criteria on this page. We now have the ridiculous spectacle of Port Vale and Notts County being described as giants when, no disrespect to their fans, they clearly aren't. As I've already removed the Havant result twice I think it would be breaking the spirit of 3RR to remove again. Arsenal FC Seasons

One anomaly that gets overlooked is Arsenal's league position at the end of 1914-15. The original Football League records show that Birmingham finised 5th and Arsenal finished 6th. In 1975, someone discovered that an error had been made in the calculation of goal average and the final table was corrected. Every Arsenal handbook up to 1975 showed the final league position as 6th! Found the reference! Phil Soar & Martin Tyler - The Official Centenary History Of Arsenal Football Club (1986), Chapter 4, page 42. Text as printed: "In 1914-15 the team had finished fifth in the Second Division (for 60 years that League table was invariably copied showing Arsenal finishing sixth but, in actual fact, they finished just above Birmingham on goal average by virtue of that 7-0 win over Forest in their final game)." I'm pretty certain there was an article about the "discovery" in an Arsenal programme during the 1974-75 season. Van den Berg etc

Ok i didnt know only first team players were allowed to have a page. I have made a lot of edits on the players lower in the arsenal ranks. particularly the international stats in the info box as many hadn't been updated since about February! Especially as many of our younger players play in U21 teams and U19 teams.

Thanks for the advice about the pictures. I've got a lot to learn about the workings of Wikipedia! I've got a few more pieces of information that I would like to add but want to reference them - e.g. the strange story of how Herbert Chapman became a manager. Is there anywhere that explains how to link a note (by this I mean a superscript number in square brackets) to a reference at the bottom of the page. Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions and work on the various football infoboxen right now. It's a big help. I really want to try to standardise the way we represent stuff like this, which means eliminating custom tables, so if you have any suggestions on how to generalise the templates (or any corner cases) then please point them out.
