WikiCup 2023 March newsletterSo ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition. These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Hello! I noticed that you added a stub template to Baker Hot Springs, however the article was already assessed as a Start class. I went ahead and added more content and citations, but please make sure to check the article talk pages before adding a template, which has been removed. You can also of course improve/expand stubs and start articles to help build the encyclopedia. Happy editing! Netherzone (talk) 14:43, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
In light of the additional sourcing and expansion, do you still believe the article should be deleted? Cbl62 (talk) 17:21, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
Question: Why withdraw the AfD? I think you were literally right on the money - despite being a well-written article in theory, it has nothing in the vein of WP:SIGCOV. It is a Good Article, but a non-notable one. I would have easily voted merge. Kung Fu Man was incorrect in their assertion that you should have taken it to GAR and BD2142 was also incorrect that "notability has already been vetted". Not so shockingly, the article became a GA in 2009 when standards were massively lower. Its GAR at Talk:Astaroth (Soulcalibur)/GA1 hardly involved any vetting besides a simple once-over, and Kung Fu Man was the original user who brought it to GA, also rather unsurprisingly. I suggest undoing the withdrawal. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 20:53, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
I wonder why you tagged most of the articles notability template except Soma Cruz. That alone is worst than Astaroth (which was recently merged now). GlatorNator (ᴛ) 11:29, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
To answer your question, you can cite dialogue from the game for the sake of explaining plot or other elements. Those references don't contribute to notability but let the reader understand more context of a statement within the article's main body, and shouldn't be used in the reception section except in very rare cases.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 19:39, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Just a thought, but the info you added to San Rafael, California might be a better fit at San Rafael City Schools. Joyous! Noise! 18:43, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
I'm wary of the optics of restoring my own CSD tag, but policy does explicitly say that G criteria apply to drafts. Giraffer (talk·contribs) 22:06, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
Giving a head's up, but after burning the midnight oil I redid a reception section from complete scratch and cited appropriate sources. It should pass SIGCOV and WP:N, but given it was your nomination last time felt it suitable to let you know and make sure you're okay with the restoration.-- Kung Fu Man (talk) 09:08, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
Re: TakiWhy did you tag that for notability? The reception section's the one part of the article that's fine and establishes her notability quite well.-- Kung Fu Man (talk) 13:55, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletterThe second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:
Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and AirshipJungleman29. So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. Participation at ANI/ANHello QuicoleJR, I've noticed you're making a lot of comments around noticeboards lately. I would recommend focusing less on getting as many comments in as many different sections as possible, and more just focus on one or two sections and taking the time to understand the issue before leaving a comment. Having a lot of comments from un-involved parties restating the obvious, or otherwise offering commentary that isn't entirely accurate or helpful, can make discussions difficult to follow and increase stress for participants. Additionally, Admin noticeboards aren't really the best place for new editors; having more experience with editing will give you some further insight into the best reponses and the context behind certain disputes. Thank you, Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 21:47, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

BandiniHi Quicole - I would like to ask a favour. Can you sense check my rewrite on Bandini Automobili. I think it has enough to use as the basis to delete the Bandini s.p. 1000 article and a couple of other similar ones - Bandini GT and Bandini Saloncino. I checked out the origin to these and found all of them look suspiciously like they are directly connected to the Bandini family or museum. They are also direct translations of similarly unreferenced articles on the Italian Wiki. I plan to tidy up the Ilario Bandini article next. NealeWellington (talk) 11:22, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews! October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here. PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon. Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD. Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge. Reminders:

The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion. It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated! 2023 Awards Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing! WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits. Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited. Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool. Reminders:

Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
See the project page for a full list of proposals and their outcomes. A huge thank-you to everyone who has participated so far :) looking forward to seeing lots of hard work become a reality in phase II. theleekycauldron (talk), via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:09, 5 May 2024 (UTC) Gulliver's Travels locationsI have restored the stand-alone articles for Laputa and Balnibarbi, undoing your WP:BOLD WP:Blank and redirect edits. My reasoning is that since WP:Articles for deletion/Brobdingnag (2nd nomination) resulted in "keep" back in 2022, there is precedent to keep stand-alone articles (such as Brobdingnag) on locations in Gulliver's Travels, so the articles should at minimum be discussed at WP:AfD first. I have, on the other hand, not restored the Glumdalclitch article. TompaDompa (talk) 20:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC) A barnstar for you!
DYK for John Wilson (Arkansas politician)On 13 June 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article John Wilson (Arkansas politician), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John Wilson was expelled from the Arkansas House of Representatives for killing another representative in a knife fight, but was then re-elected two years later? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John Wilson (Arkansas politician). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, John Wilson (Arkansas politician)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 00:04, 13 June 2024 (UTC) WikiCup 2024 July newsletterThe third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:30, 29 June 2024 (UTC) My signatureI can explain why: I noticed that my signature was taking up a lot of bytes on the page. Thus I manually added a linkless signature so that the WT:V5 pages would remain smaller, since they were already very large. I had no idea that it was breaking the reply function. starship.paint (RUN) 13:53, 4 July 2024 (UTC) Question regarding a potential V5 articleSince Stardew Valley seems to be an unpopular choice for indie game representation at V5 and some have commented that there could be more indie game representation at V5 besides the likely-to-be-added Papers, Please, I've been looking for one more game that could possibly make good indie representation. And one that I think could have a chance (despite its fairly young age) is Hotline Miami, since I've managed to find a lot of sourcing to prove it had a long term industry impact (more than is currently present at the articles for games like Undertale). I feel like it could maybe have a chance at getting added if nominated, since it influenced video games (even non-indie ones) for over a decade. However, I am hesitant to start a discussion since it is one of my favorite games and it could come off as bias, I am the articles primary contributor, there are already two-indie game discussions, and it could possibly be torn apart for only being a game from 2012. I would like to hear what you think. λ NegativeMP1 05:25, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition.
