Orphaned non-free media (File:Sky New Zealand logo.svg)

Thanks for uploading File:Sky New Zealand logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 13:19, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Belated thanks

I rarely do that, but here it is long overdue - thank you. The dezomify script that you wrote for extracting www.gahetna.nl images helped providing many hundreds, or maybe thousands of valuable photographs for multiple wikimedia projects. Anefo is expanding their CC-BY content (e.g., they've added color images under toegang 2.24.01.06 and 2.24.01.07, as well as a large new package of 2.24.01.03 images), and thus the work is on-going. Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 05:03, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to hear it has been useful! : ) I will integrate this capability into the main dezoomify version (the one on SF) as soon as possible. Quibik (talk) 23:56, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One more comment on that script. I have complained in the past that on Win 7 (64 bit) it was stumbling and retrieving a photo per hour as a result. Meanwhile, it was working fine on 32 bit windows machines within the same network. I have fixed that today on my PC by performing windows updates - something in the recent update package unlocked python. Materialscientist (talk) 02:22, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, wow, thanks for letting me know. That speedup is mind-boggling (about 500× for me). I suspect that Windows Defender or a similar mechanism has now stopped over-eagerly scanning jpegtran and/or the intermediate input-output images at every single one of the thousand or so untiling steps. Halftone pattern

Hi Quibik! Would you mind taking a stab at File:Luther Severance.jpg? If you can remove the halftone pattern from the original upload, I can do the rest. I realize it's a poor quality image to begin with, but I thought with your kid gloves we might be able to make a better job of it. Regards, nagualdesign 20:04, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Quibik

1000 apologies for the recent brouhaha. I would never have asked you to get involved if I'd known that was going to happen. Updated scripts

Hi Quibik. I edited your monobook.js and your vector.js to update you to the latest version of TemplateScript. You were using a much older version called regex menu framework, so the main difference you'll see (if you uncomment the script) is an improved regex editor and cleaner custom scripts. I also updated deprecated functions and made your scripts HTTPS-compatible. Let me know if anything breaks, or if you'd like help migrating the scripts into your common.js. :) —Pathoschild 02:53, 09 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Agerpres watermarks

{{PD-RO-photo}} allows downloading recent Romanian images, and agerpres.ro provides a large and reliable database, but. They give two choices - a clean thumbnail, which is too narrow (I need 240px or more in width), or a wider watermarked image, where the watermark pattern varies and is not that easy to remove. Have a look at a characteristic example [1]. It says the original is 1201 x 1743 px, while they offer 413 x 600 px max for download. Questions:

  1. Do you see any way to get to a better image version on their website (almost all photos there are unique and are not available elsewhere).
  2. If not, what is the watermarking method? Googling will quickly bring agerpres images with watermarks on a nearly uniform black background, which might give a clue (I understand that watermark removal will not work well at low resolution, but this might be better than removal from scratch). Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 07:19, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a way to access any higher-resolution versions either.
There's a small number of different watermarks used there. Some of them are placed consistently in all images (e.g. [2], [3]), some aren't (the ones like [4] vary in size and move around by a few pixels in each image). For the consistent ones it is probably possible to recover the watermark and use it for removal. It's possible to do so by scraping a reasonably large number of images bearing that watermark, scaling the thumbnail image to match the watermarked's size, cropping and then doing some sort of robust linear regression on them. That will probably recover the watermark quite well. Nevertheless, since all of the images are heavily compressed and the watermarks are quite opaque in some places, so there is still going to be a lot of noisy artifacts remaining after removal even with a perfectly recovered watermark.
This sounds like a small, fun project. I don't have time for it right now, but I might give it a shot if a weekend happens to be free and I'm in the mood. Or is this something you would like to try perhaps? You can always ping me for help. —Quibik (talk) 08:09, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A gave it a try yesterday. I could extract a relatively clean watermark, but could not see the watermarking method, upon a quick look, and thus came here (glad to see you are still around :). Materialscientist (talk) 08:35, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Muscles of the gluteal and posterior femoral regions

On the page "biceps femoris muscle", in the additional images, the 4th image from the left is mislabelled and does not belong there. It is labelled "Muscles of the gluteal and posterior femoral regions" but the picture shows instead the muscles of the antero-lateral aspect of the leg. The picture should be replaced with the correct one or removed.142.244.23.102 (talk) 21:48, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Fauré-by-Eugéne-Pirou.jpg

Happy New year, Quibik! Do you think there's anything you could do with File:Fauré-by-Eugéne-Pirou.jpg? I'm not sure if it's the sort of thing that's suited to FFT filtering but the noise is periodic, so I thought I'd ask. I'm happy to do the spot fixes, unless you'd like to do them. I've recently updated most of the images at Maurice Ravel, and this one's the last ugly image. I've already looked and no other version of this image is available. nagualdesign 18:35, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Nagualdesign, and happy new year to you too! I cleaned it up. Let me know if there's anything that needs tweaking. I really enjoy this type of work from time to time, so thanks for the request, no problem. If you're curious, this kind of noise is quite easy to clean up with FFT if you first separate the relevant noise by apply bilateral filtering to the image and then doing 'grain extract' between that layer and the original. —Quibik (talk) 19:26, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cracking job, as always. Thank you. nagualdesign 20:03, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I'll ever get to your standards when it comes to FFT filtering (and my filters have gone missing sometime in the last 12 months) but I'm glad you reminded be about bilateral filtering (called "Surface Blur" in Photoshop, right?) as I'd completely stopped using it! I used it to help polish off File:Fauré-by-Eugéne-Pirou.jpg to good effect. Incidentally, do you know a good resource for downloading Photoshop plug-ins? nagualdesign 21:41, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:EPUB logo.svg

Thanks for uploading File:EPUB logo.svg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vitaium (talk) 10:45, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
